Without a doubt the clearest, most well structured car tutorial video I've ever seen. I don't even know how you managed to replicate the sounds and smoke colours. It was so convincing! Bravo!
Putting the noise and smoke to the fault was genius I keep checking all my hoses and now I know a hiss is likely to be and exhaust leak I can hopefully put this problem to bed once its stopped F-ing raining 🌧
I second that. A little late to the turbo party, but Robin, you put this together exactly how they all should be. Thank you. Hope you are doing well. P.S. I am new to VW/Audi turbo chargers. I've got a 1.8T, new to me, seems to run okay, no MIL, but I can't hear the turbo charger at all. Is this common?
This is fantastic! Replicating multiple different sounds and smoke is something that I've never seen before on UA-cam videos. My car is currently cutting out immediately after it starts up, but when I disconnect the turbo actuator, or the wiring connector to the actuator, it starts just fine, but obviously runs a bit weird driving without the turbo. And the actuator is not sticking either, and I just cleaned out the turbo last year.
You are the best i have ever seen. I know much about car mechanics but my friend you make everything so clear even for one that knows absolutely nothing about his car. Congratulations.
That Audi has all sorts of problems, white smoke, blue smoke, hissing, whistling, I am amazed... Kidding, great video, best I could find, thank you! Subscribed!
Very informative video bro, I have a 2002 Audi a4 and I'm experiencing most of these issues. Lack of power, White smoke from exhaust and turbo making a type of screaming noise. At first, I thought It could be the head gasket and I'm still not completely sure it isn't but after watching this I think it's the turbo. Appreciate the help man!
This is my first time seeing or indeed, watching your videos. You covered a lot in five minutes. Very impressed with the amount of detail from each possible symptom of a turbo problem.
im jealous of how cool robin looks, hes like a chill guy from the 80s ,but without the baseball jacket and instead a farmer look . (the belt is on point)
I have seen many videos, your videos are the best and clearest about turbochargers. No doubt oil is very important for a turbocharger to work and last long time. In m case I have bought a BMW. After 20000km the turbocharger crash. When Ifollowed the service history, I found from 2015 to 2016 the car has driven over 40000km on the same oil. And from 2016 to 2017 passed over 43000km. No wonder my car has got a lot turbocharger problems. When I have a twin turbocharger in my car. I have two turbocharger the small one is high pressure and the big one is low pressure. There are two pair electronic ventils, 1 pressure converter and 1 charger pressure regulatorventil for the high pressure , 1 pressure converter and 1 charger pressure regulatorventile for the low pressure. So when my car do not accellerate in the low 900-2000 rpm the two components converter and regulatorventil may be faulty. If the turbocharger do no work from 2000 rpm and up the other pair of electronic parts are at fault. Am I right?
Welp, this confirms it..my turbo is going bad lol. Now I need to decide whether I rebuild it, buy a used stock OEM turbo, or buy a new turbo all together. Great video! You cant help but trust a man dressed like that!
Yeeeeeep, I just subscribed, hell I'm a great auto tech but the way you presented everything is a rare quality that UA-cam is missing, and for that simple thing, you gained a fan. Keep wrenching my friend.✊🏾💪🏾✊🏾💪🏾

Hope this comment is not to late to respond to: So here is my issue maybe you can give advise: 1. I drive a VW Polo MK4 1.9TDI ASZ version, last year December I drove to my parents for Christmas, on my way, as I overtook another vehicle the turbo popped and pushed all the oil into intake and intercooler. At that point we did not know it was the turbo as the car stated and idled for 5seconds and then died. So we got a family friend out after the car was towed to my parents house he took the boost pipe out connected to the EGR side and the vehicle ran with a lot of white smoke with the car struggling to rev. After a month after the holidays was gone, we got the family friend to check the vehicle out at his workshop, after taking the engine apart the turbo shaft was completely loose inside of the compressor. 2. We imported a secondhand motor from the UK/EU region and we installed the engine, flushed the intercooler and so on, no after 2 month of having the vehicle back, the EGR is spilling oil again as well as the turbo, the intercooler is leaking oil, but no visible smoke when hammering the car on the freeway. Do you have any suggestions as to what might cause this symptoms?
I was a little distracted Robin ☺ but I"m listening... My problem is a turbo oil leak. I'm checking the air filter and for any kinks or seals first before replacing the turbo as it is costly.
I like your style of informing, be it a pro or a lay man, you account for them with your approach. Thank you. I'll follow you so that when I have my problems with my land cruiser I can easily troubleshoot..
Thank you Robin, that was informative and very well presented. Since I installed a new larger turbo I have had this whistle that souns like a 747 jet and have thought it is how its meant to be as it is also kind of cool but would much prefer it to not be there so will perform a smoke test. Who knows?, cheers
Thank you very much for your advices. It have helped a lot to me. By the way, very nice voice you have, I ll listening the videos to learn more english. Especially thanks for this.
Great video i lost power and thick black smoke came out i kept the car under 2000 revs it was hopeless on hills but when i turned the car off on again couldnt find a problem
Just had a turbocharger put into my 2007 mazda cx7. I noticed when starting, I hear a sound like a blender in the area of the turbo but not that loud just when starting but not with every start. Then the car drives fine all day
This semi truck I’m in is going through some power problems. After a while though the truck starts to accelerate as normal. I’ll see what’s going on soon as I get this over to a nice truck stop
I have driven for months with no check engine light. My engine has NOT lost power. I have no smoke. But I learned I have a permanent P0299 underboost code. My car has only
Taken my car to three different places one told me it was the timing chain. Two of the places told me it's the turbo. After watching this I don't think it's the turbo. Wish I can show you a video and you can give me your best guess.
3:34 just sounds like someone has tampered with the blow of valve🤔 it’s bad if you got the fluttering sound while on boost but if it is while letting of the throttle it’s typically no worries (if you like the sound and drive a modified car that’s tuned or the parts is specificity made to handle it) on a stock engine it puts a lot of stress on the compressor wheel because the air is forced out of the compressor wheel
Flutter does put stress on modified of stock engine's turbo, its just noise coming from compressor because the throttle valve is closed and air cant escape the intake system. Im really not sure if there is evidence that it breaks the turbo.
Tarmo Alaspää yes the turbo is capable of handling the extra stress I drove a 940 turbo and many of my friends do to and we have had the blow of valve removed and they’re holding up just fine
I have a 1.8 t jetta sometimes has white smoke from the exhaust but don’t think I have any lack from the turbo the kid I brought it from said the oil light comes on. When giving gas and doing anywhere from 40-60 it’s fine when letting off the pedale and reaching 2000 rpms the oil pressure light comes on and starts beeping
Absolutely amazing ...thanx so much...so I've just had my turbos redone at a registered RMI workshop and it came back with the same whistling siren sound . Is it safe to say that wasn't done properly...would really appreciate your advise...thanx. The gentleman at the workshop told me it's normal for the turbo to make a sound because of the pick up
I have a hissing sound on 2200rpm and used to get overboost error and limp mode. Hissing sound still there but no more limp mode over 3000rpm. Lag in accelleration andlist a bit of power. No smoke.
This is the best video i have found explaining all different symptoms of a bad turbo, ive got a 2011 Audi TT 8J CESA engine which recently started smoking blue smoke from exhaust when i rev the car, whilst idling thou its not that bad and only gives off a very little until under load so im assuming it could be the turbo. i also noticed a whistling sound from intake when i rev her up, louder with cold air intake, when it smokes i can smell the oil, PCV valve has been changed and still does the same, any further advice before i take it to the mechanic for turbo replacement?
I’ve heard noticeable chirping noise that starts around 4k ish rpm and I can’t figure out if it’s the turbo or not. I’ve took it to Audi to get the headlights adjusted and I asked to check the engine because I’ve noticed a weird noise. They said they didn’t hear anything unusual and did a multipoint inspection. I feel like it is a bit slower than it used to be when I give it full throttle. The noise isn’t always apparent so I don’t know if it is a major issue or not. I just hit 20k miles also.
