The verve had 3 of the very best albums the UK produced in the 90’s, unbelievable from top to bottom.
My band Shader recorded at the Verve’s bassist Simon Jones studio near Chester.. We got to use all the Verve’s gear from A Northern Soul & Urban Hymn’s .. mind blowing experience..Si is a top bloke and bass player..we had some great chats about the early years of his band. One of the great bands with a natural musical chemistry for groove and sonic guitar soundscapes 🔥
🎶 Justin Hawkins cries again...again🎶
Beat me to it!

Nick McCabe is possibly one of the most underrated guitarist the UK has ever produced. I’m in a band called Tigerside, and I always have this guy leading the way in my style.
Guys a genius
Nick and the guy from Ocean Colour Scene
@@moustachio334 Steve Craddock. Moseley Shoals is a great album.
He's up there with the likes of Pat Walden, from Babyshambles first incarnation. Genius levels of original playing style.
Hear hear! I saw Verve live in 93 and McCabe's playing and sound blew me away. Recordings often didn't quite fully capture his brilliance.
@@RyanMichero Defo man! Lovely guy but all accounts apparently!
Cannot believe it Justin. I suffer from crippling depression and yesterday I listened to this album again basically it made me cry but in a happy way. It's beautiful .
This and their first A Storm in Heaven are superb.
I actually knew someone who thought Kings of Leon were better than Verve. He was a prick.
Your brilliant Justin .Great vid.
Those first two Verve albums and the accompanying b-sides are phenomenal. I remember early Verve supporting Spiritualized in Norwich but I was too young to go, that must have been one of the most incredible gigs of all time! Luckily I got to see both of them in 97, Verve's set was mostly A Northern Soul and a Storm In Heaven with Bittersweet Symphony, Drugs Don't Work, Rolling People and Come on thrown in, one of the best gigs I've ever seen, transcendental!
May 8th 1992. SPIRITUALIZED. THE VERVE. NORWICH UEA.
May 8th 1992 Remains THE Greatest Night Of My Life.
I Was With 2 Friends That Night. My Friend "J" Was On Acid. My Other Friend "A" Was Drunk And I Was Stoned On Dope. We Experienced 3 Radically Different SPIRITUALIZED Performances. However All 3 Of Us Were Rendered Completely Speechless During Our Walk Back To The Car And Drive Home From The UEA To The Outskirts Of Norwich. I Think It Was Approximately 30 Minutes Before Any One Of Us Uttered A Word.
PS We All Went On To Take More Acid At The End Of That Night.

PS J SPACEMAN Wants ETTA JAMES' AT LAST Played At His.
I Expect RICHARD ASHCROFT Will Have CHRIS BELL's I AM THE COSMOS Played At His.

Not only is this album a dense and dark masterpiece, but the accompanying b-sides from the same period are _Masterplan_ level of quality. I can't think of many rock albums from the 90s that hit home more lyrically, particularly as a conflicted teenager growing up, often carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.
Em7: the waterbed of chords. When you first get into it, it feels kinda weird and wrong, a little dirty. Then you realize it’s the best thing ever and you don’t know why anyone would want to use plain old traditional beds ever again. Then you just get obnoxious with it and try to work it into everything you do, until your girlfriend can’t take it anymore and texts you to say she’s now dating the drummer. The DRUMMER!!!!!
It's a great chord egenrally as it can lead onto so many other great chords. Plus it's an easy one for guitar.
Em with the major 7th and major 9th is the best in the chord gladiatorial arena
Lmao 🤣 your analogy is clever and funny.

Love the Verve. A Storm in Heaven was so refreshing after hearing nothing but grunge for the previous two years. Saw them at Lollapalooza 1994. I was on Jesus acid. Great show!
I cry to music on a very regular basis. Some music sets my brain on fire and it makes me cry tears of joy. It's ultra powerful and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Music is an amazing release of the soul.
Well said and very true
True . Only music can bring out so many different emotions in a person. People could argue that movies can do the same but not as often and not as powerful I don’t think
This album hit me hard when I was 17. Wallowing in the sheer misery of it. Still listening to it 25 years later! I always thought McCabe and Jones had great chemistry - I love the interplay between guitar and bass on tracks like Drive You Home and So It Goes - but you’re right that Richard had a raw, powerful voice full of pain at this point. Definitely my favourite Verve album. Reprise is an incredible final track.
Didn’t think you’d be into this Justin. Is is a phenomenal underrated album for sure. 🙏👍🏼
Nice statement: "it never leaves you"! Spot On.
The first 2 albums are under rated masterpieces. Love that you appreciate them!
This album is incredible. A Storm In Heaven is a masterpiece, but there's something about A Northern Soul that just hits differently, and their version of Lifes an Ocean on Jools Holland is as good as it gets.
Yes! That is is one of the greatest live tv performances ive ever seen
@@jonnywose2528 Agree mate. A band at their peak for me 🔥
Storm in heaven and the live record before we're awesome. The one with the pinball machine
Nick's playing on that 😍
Its a mix.Its got poppy songs on it.History,On Your Own....etc etc.....and a little bit of psychedelic tracks that they had/did on A Storm In Heaven.Lifes An Ocean.....etc etc......
The verve is sooooooooooo underrated i love them so much they have changed my life musically spiritually, they are magic
Nick McCabe’s guitar on this album is amazing, cosmic and powerful. Such a good backdrop to Richard Ashcroft’s raw voice and lyrics. Fucking love it
Great choice, A Northern Soul & A Storm in Heaven are criminally underrated albums
Got to agree, can't imagine a band being 'allowed' to release two albums these days without having a 'hit'.
I love Richard Ashcroft. A great live artist also. His voice is amazing.
This is a much underrated album that is more about mood and atmosphere rather than hooks and hits. It really needs to be listened to on headphones in a dark room. I remember getting campylobacter food poisoning not long after this was released and spending the best part of a week in a slight hallucinatory haze just letting this album wash over me . . . it was a hell of a medicine!
Biggest fan from Springfield Illinois America
Love the Verve and LOVE your videos. SO stoked the algorithm sent me to you. Never change!!!!!
Loving this channel mate, thank you for the videos! Congrats on passing 200k 🎊
you know Justin, it's quite fantastic seeing all of the organic reverence you have for other bands/musicians... you have a different level of introspect from not only being a talented musician, but a successful one too.... nuthin' but good energy in this one, bub! keep it up and thanx again for helping me get my day going on the right direction once again. cheers, -Swiney
I love Northern Soul! Very underrated album. Life's an Ocean, Stormy Clouds and then Reprise are a joy to lay back to and get lost in.
It's brilliant!
It’s not underrated. It’s highly regarded.
Phenomenal album. The 'On Your Own' single from this album had 'I see the Door' as a b-side - love that song.
Heck yeah. 🙂
That was a great one!
I love "Little Gem" and "Dance on Your Bones" as well.
There’s a couple live version of I see the door on UA-cam that are brilliant
It’s amazing bruh , your piece “Holding My Own” is amazing too
What a great show! Thank you xx
One of my favourite albums of all time too. Great to hear you saying so Justin!
It is a great album. I was in the same year at school as these guys, and was really surprised and happy for them when they made it.
Always look forward to your videos. Such a feel good part of my day!
Thanks!
A Storm in Heaven was this wide-open psychedelic idea, monumental in its ambition,I adore it to this day, Northern Soul is far more reflective and heartfelt, and Richard seems to be singing from the marrow of his bones trying to communicate something sincere and pure.
i continue to be amused but pleasantly surprised by your channel, never had you for a verve fan, and northern soul is a great album, i first heard it in sept 95 when a friend i shared a flat with at the time had bought it and was hailing the arrival of the best musical talent in recent memory, he was kind of right, and when urban hymns came later we felt fully vindicated
this album is a classic. Love these videos Justin, keep it going!
Justin I could have sat through 14 hours let alone 14 minutes of you noodling on your guitar, humming away and talking up this phenomenal body of work. I love this album that much! Thankyou
History and On your Own are just gorgeous. I’ve listened to this album in full so many times . Just beautiful
My own to favourite songs from the album. ❤
A storm in heaven is easily one of the greatest albums ever recorded. It's not bad sober either 😉
Yup. I don’t need anything Richard Ashcroft has done outside The Verve, but I can’t live without that band.
Yes, Storm in Heaven is probably one of the top 5 or 10 psychedelic rock records ever. The 1992 Verve EP and rare live Voyager 1 are equally astonishing
@@CircuitRider “No Come Down”, too, is one of the best compilations of b-sides ever released by any group
@@pyenapple agreed. That Glastonbury rendition of “Gravity Grave” is intense
@@CircuitRider “we can go up one more time, we can go up one one more, one more”
I totally agree with this assessment. Some of my favorite songs are deep cuts. The ones that weren't huge radio singles. Those songs have much more depth and meaning than what you hear played on the radio. I think many people (especially these days with streaming) don't realize what they are missing by only listening to singles. There can be some gems on an album that they miss out on by not taking time to fully listen all the way through. And I really must give this album a good listen. Thanks for the recommendation. 😊
Love the channel Duderama 🙌 Rock on Justin! 🤘😎
Being moved to tears by music is one of my favorite human experiences. Not so much because it's sad but because it's so damn perfect.
I love it too man!! It’s in my top five…..goosebumps all over the shop ❤️
It’s a proper journey and needs to be experienced from front to back
So true - it’s an album that attaches itself to your (northern) soul - so glad you enjoy it so much too!
I adore all these records and each one has its place but A Northern Soul is just remarkable. Thank you for introducing more people to The Verve. They were just an incredible band.
Justin , I absolutely fucking love your channel fella which is now a must watch most nights before my slumbers, much like a comforting world service broadcast. Only...its you ,and your especially pertinent tastes and critiques ;to my own. Long may you go on, and... it would be great if you could elaborate on the guitar tutorial aspects of your fab show...maybe like an appendix to each one. Much love

Thank you so much for all you do.
The soundtrack to my youth; this album is imprinted in my identity. Very dark album, relentless and basically devoid of hope. But all the more beautiful for its bleak atmosphere. "Let The Damage Begin" was also an incredible b-side.
love the description - yes its bloody miserable but brings back plenty of happy memories of the time so actually quite uplifting!
Brilliant. Again. Top bloke, great musician. Love the channel. Mucho respect.
Thanks for sharing your love of other artists.
This album needs way more recognition! It’s been a musical inspiration for me ever since I started playing guitar. Nick is a guitar genius.
So cool, that you know these hidden gems.
Dark, fuzzy, ambient, melancholy and ethereal is this albums mood. Makes me feel sad and elated when I listen to it, the last song (reprise) is pure magic. Urban hymns is the gateway to The Verve’s psychedelic back catalogue, if it resonates, you can’t get enough
Stormy clouds is a phenomenal song and it feels like it couldn't have been made at any other time. The band at their peak and just going with the flow, reaching heights that will never be reached again.
Great great album . Urban hymns was brilliant but a northern soul is unbelievable when listened to in it’s entirety. I wouldn’t say I liked or disliked the darkness but love your channel and your eclectic taste in music and your positive outlook on everything. Keep up the good work man
Thanks Justin,
It’s one of my favorite albums, I love it so much and have done since I bought it when it first came out. Ashcroft tapped into something powerful and personal which certainly reflected a lot of the band’s audience of that time. It still stands up today and it’s lyrical theme’s of existential despair and searching for hope is ultimately uplifting and a very rewarding listen.
Then there is the rest of the band who created that sound/magic. They were all great musicians that played like a group. McCabe is a genius with a guitar.
Strangely enough, I’ve been putting together a play list from the 92’ until 95’ period including stand alone singles and great “B-Sides”. Remember them? The Verve were great from the very start.
Loved this vid Justin A Northern Soul is an incredible album and the way you feel about it is the way I feel about Urban Hymns. I was 17 or 18 when it came out so just a few years younger than you and the drugs did work for me when it came to listening to that album, it'll always easily be in my top 5 massive nostalgia hits from every track. I wouldn't say Richard Ashcroft or The Verve are underrated but they're definitely one of (If not) the very best to emerge from the 90s and don't always get the acknowledgement they deserve
Great Sunday afternoon listen from another great show. Thanks😀
I liked Bittersweet Symphony when it was released but didn't truly discover The Verve until around 2014... and fell in love with all their music. Truly exceptional. Glad you appreciate them as well :)
Stormy clouds is one of the brilliant pieces of work they've ever done. Memories of me driving around in a '95 Jeep on summer nights on a back-roads with no doors, no top, and A Northern Soul cranked.
Thank you! I love this album but not listened it in years. I just have and it has soothed my (southern ) soul. Now I'm going to have to revisite Spiritualized's Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space, my god the 90s were special! Xx
So glad to see the ❤ shown for this album. In Canada, "On Your Own" got some mild rotation as the single. I was fortunate to see them just following the release of A Storm In Heaven on the side stage at Lollapalooza. You knew then that they had something special. But then came this record. The musicianship paired with some interesting production choices (especially the on the verge drum track on Life's An Ocean) made for one stellar sonic journey. What I most enjoyed is after getting intimately familiar with the album was hearing it pulled off live with such finesse. I don't think the band ever got their due in terms of their live shows and how they could bring that same spirit to it.
I love this album and the lyrics of History seem to be inspired by Blake's poem 'London':
I wander thro' each charter'd street,
Near where the charter'd Thames does flow.
And mark in every face I meet
Marks of weakness, marks of woe.
In every cry of every Man,
In every Infants cry of fear,
In every voice: in every ban,
The mind-forg'd manacles I hear
@Mark Bannister Ah, I didn't know that! I was reading Blake and thought that the words sounded kinda familiar!
Bittersweet Symphony is one of my favorite songs ever..... and I'm 60. I love the orchestration and that simple bass line hooks into me every time. The Oldham orchestra version of Last Time is amazing, too.
A dear friend of mine introduced me to this album in 1997 - been one of my favourites since. History is a powerful, moving song - a standout in a sea of gems. Great choice.
I'm going to listen to this after watching your video. Thank you!
🇬🇧
Loving the video Justin. Little story... The vending machine of feelings. I used to work with someone who was mates with The Verve at college. He was the only one with a house so you can imagine the stories and how much they relied on his roof. Anyway one of the things was storing things and the vending machine was one. It lived in his garage for 20 years. Sadly not too long ago he sold it to, I think it was the album artwork designer, the name escapes me for not very much in my humble opinion. I begged him to keep hold of it. I would have bought it myself if I wasn't earning peanuts.
My work mate raved about Nick McCabe, said he was so underrated. He used to play with a "tape loop echo effect" as he put it. Sounds insane. Top album
Fucking splendid way to spend a Sunday, finding ways to update my musical playlist. Cheers Justin
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one Justin; this is how albums like these find new listeners to love them.
Such a brilliant rollercoaster of an albumThis is Music....History....and A Northern Soul - that one lights a fire inside me.
So damned good.
There's also a great performance of theirs in Camden, from 1993 I think, floating around UA-cam.Highly recommended!
Camden 92 I think it was - the dvd comes with the 2016 box-set re-release of A Storm in Heaven
Copious amounts of E and internal fighting created one of the best albums to come out of this country. Mesmerising work.
Definitely one of my fave albums ever too Justin. 👍🏻
For Q&A day. I love hearing you talk about how music can move you to tears, but how does it feel when you hear people say they have the same reaction to your music? In a good way, obviously…
Didn't know this band had done much at all after bittersweet symphony. Turns out my husband has some of their albums back in his property in mexico and was really into them for a while. He kinda never really mentioned them cause he also lost track of them after a bit.
Will check out for sure!
Thank you!
Much love to you Mr. Hawkins!
Ahh man you summed this album up perfectly to how I feel about it. Took a while but when it got under my skin it just stuck. Possibly my favourite album ever!!
Great Album, and great summary 👍
Thanks Justin. Reminded me that I love The Verve. Back to their back catalogue and Ashcroft’s solo stuff.
I feel so lucky to have seen many of these tracks live when The Verve 'supported' Oasis at Earl's Court on their Be Here Now tour. It's funny how the press are banging on about the anniversary of Be Here Now this week and all I can think of is The Verve. When they left the stage that night, I remember turning to my friend and saying "how can you follow that?" We both knew we'd witnessed something special.
Both A Northern Soul and Urban Hymns masterpieces and History, lyrically, is probably some of Ashcroft's best songwriting. So, so glad you did this video, thank you!
Would never have had you as a Verve fan Justin. Thanks for this, old bean!
one of my favourites all time for sure. the first three records are all brilliant in their own way. big part of my adolescence, i completely get your emotions with this one! One thing: they never completely lost the "jammy" feeling on the 3rd or even the 4th record. check out "the rolling people" or "come on" maybe to refresh your memory. The Story behind rolling people is funny, Noel and Richard had a contest who could nick a part from am aphrodites child song called "the four horsemen" and Richard was faster. Love your videos, cheers!
Hey Justo. This channel is something else fella, just brillant!!
Would be great to hear an episode on INXS.. (Michael Hutchence in particular).
Much ❤️ from Down Unnder!!!
Yep, "Life's An Ocean" is buttery perfection & a classic not oft spoken about. The _Urban Hymns_ b-sides like "The Longest Day" are top, as well.
Right on the money Justin! I've been listening to that album regularly for over 20 years now. It's an absolute gem!
Wow man. I didn't expect this.
Respect, more.
I love this album and thanks to you Justin I'm going to enjoy it tomorrow 👍
Thank you Justin probably my all time favourite album. ❤
Great taste! I love that you enjoy NIN, Verve, Ghost, My Chem and Turnstile 😂
It's all fantastic stuff! Nice to see you appreciate such a wide swath of sounds.
Dear Justin,
Thanks SO much for reminding me of this album. You and I are around the same age, and I too have wept many a time to this album, so I COMPLETELY understand what you speak of. Ashcroft is brilliant, and Nick McCabe…aaaw, man! ❤
I love A Northern Soul, I love how each song just flows into another. I like On Your Own, History as well as Life's An Ocean and Stormy Clouds. I would also check out Storm In Heaven, such an underrated, atmospheric sounding debut album.
Storm in heaven is the better work.
Storm in heaven is better imo
Lifes an ocean live is as epic as it gets only had the privelage to see verve once but unreal.
I don't know how I missed this channel for so long but I'm hooked now thanks to the chats video!
I'd love to hear your opinion of reverend horton heat, I've been binging them all summer.
Thanks for a better introduction to The Verve. Wrote them off at the time because "Drugs Don't Work" was playing everywhere and I just found it thoroughly depressing. Will be checking out more now. Congrats on over 200K subscribers!
This is an amazing album. So many great albums from the 90s that went under the radar. The Sun is Often Out by Longpigs is a diamond to be sought out for music lovers of this era.
I was listening to it the other day in the car. Every few years I remember it and put it on. Fantastic album. Liked their second album (Mobile Home) as well but “The Sun is Often Out” is just perfection. I even came across the book they were named after and read that as well.
Blue skies by the Longpigs is a-mazing
I often get deeply moved by great music as well. I reckon it's natural for us Musicians who really understand and feel the music to shed a tear at times. Amazing album this is..
Great record! I’ll never get bored of Drive You Home
My appreciation for your application for this has not diminished.
Really great album. Ashcroft recently performed drugs don't work with a gospel backing group and it literally took me to church. Underrated singer who hasn't lost sny of his range. Brilliant 🙌🏿
Thank you Justine, I love this album.
He is if he is gonna cry.
I hope you do one of these for their first album! 👌🏻
Hi Justin, big fan. My ears pricked up when you mentioned Owen Morris. I've always been fascinated by the job role & personalities of music producers. If you compare say, Rick Rubin (hands off holistic approach with no signature sound) to Phil Spector (bringing a gun into the studio to encourage the artist to achieve his vision), they seem so different. I wondered what do you look for in a producer & how do you decide where the job starts & ends? Cheers, Dan
Definitely will put this on my list of vinyl buys
Your passion for this record is contagious. Just brilliant. I had a smile from ear to ear watching this. Also, I'm wondering if you would review oldie songs such as Sonic Youth's "Dirty Boots" or "Kool Thing" or Pixies "Monkey's Gone to Heaven". I was listening to them yesterday and watching their videos and was overwhelmed by a lovely sense of nostalgia and a feeling of 'what a simpler time that was". I think because I'm old, it felt like a happier time then - unburdoned by responsibility or something. Does that music resonate with you? If so, I'd love to hear you takes on those songs. Also, Kim Gordon is my absolute hero and I want her to adopt me as her sister. So, you know, I'll take any chance to gush about Kim comments style. Thank you as always most excellent, Justin for the best channel on the whole of the internet! Now, that's a lot of internet!
Beautiful ❤
Absolute favourite band of all time (no offence to the darkness) the ambience of the guitars and the soundscapes they create takes you to a different world. Nick McCabe is an absolute pioneer.
