Best and most underrated band. Sad that people only know bittersweet symphony
You right!!! +1
But maybe its good, cause this music is not far all, its just for people like you and me... For those who can really feel it..
they finally got royalties. 2019. A. oldham Orchestra / stones..lawsuit
Such deep songs that build up with great layering. Not 3 minute, 1 month & its never played again crap. These were made to last
I managed to listen to more of their music. Yes the music moves me and in my view a very underrated band. My understanding is that they are no longer together, which is unfortunate.
When The Verve produced this music I was going through excruciating pivotal changes in my life. I remember seeing them live on this tour... their music helped me face and embrace the painful emotions rather than running away from them. The alchemy of their powerful lyrics and music ushered me through that time, and I've felt stronger and more at peace for the journey with their soundtrack in my soul.
Much gratitude!!
They were something else. I remember being alone on a train from Paris to Sevilla at 21, traveling by myself listening to a Northern Soul, Stormy Clouds....
I loved your comment on here and I wish you have had an excellent life ever since.
The verve change my life too .. they have something that is something difficult explain ,is like powerful and great conviction which you use to renew your mind … sorry my English . Iam natively speak Spanish
Me too dude !
Glad you were able to come out of the closet.
The expression on the girl’s face from 14:47 to 15:04 encapsulates what listening to Verve is like
It's called, " love ". Haha. Cheers!
yes
Beautiful shot.
The verve always take me to another dimension. I just close my eyes and REALLY feel their songs. My favorite band ever!
She looks like a young Charlize Theron, lost in the epic Verve sound. Exactly how it feels when you forget the world and put the Verve on.
Wow. With that footage, that's not a recording of a concert, that's a spiritual journey!
if you want to total burn your brains out... 100 clips per minut destroys you
I was at the SF show and I'll never forget it! This band is legendary.
I am fortunate enough to have seen them three times, including on their first US dates supporting "A Storm In Heaven." They were lysergic live. You had to be there.
Their will never be another band that can compare to this Band. Better than any drug. Thank you for uploading this. I have the VHS of this.

Thank you.
SO MUCH SOUL...
I bought this from HMV when it first came out.
Absolutely blew my mind. 🤯👌👌👌
the 90's had a feel, a smell in the air of freedom, carelessness and i think the music reflected it.
This version of stormy clouds is awesome. Love si’s bass part at the beginning.
its weird seeing the clips from the DC 930 club show and know that i was there all these many years later
Completely love this band. Richard Ashcroft is amazing. Their sound is satisfying to our collective souls.
I had this on VHS, saw them in NYC and it’s still one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
Amazing documentary...the verve in 1997, what a special time, loved it!
Freaking awesome video. What an era of music. We are here albeit a short time, I hope you made sure it is a good time.
Remember seeing this film on MTV. I recorded it on a VHS. It's awesome to watch it again with great quality. The Verve is one of my favorite bands.
I'm in my mid-50's and just discovered their catalog. Remind me of the power of U2 with such a great combination of infectious guitar, great vocals and driving rhythm. Sad they didn't have the career of them though.
Edge compared to Nick Macabe? I'll agree RA is as big of a dick as Bono. But as bands there is no comparison. All due respect🤝
U2? Please God No!!!!
Had this on tape when I was 14, watched it every day after school followed by oasis at Maine road, there and then I think you called it. Be great for the both to be available on DVD or streaming services, great films both.
back in the day this VHS was a massive influence in our music approach with my friends, 25 years later the band is rockin better than ever and listening to this songs over and over, thanks so much Andy
I an a huge fan! I in think I'd a healthy obsession!lol
Who uploaded this? he deserves my respect and a life filled with happiness..thanks!!
Absolutely beautiful
Sublimes.
Love for the Verve. What a band!
Pure class. Love the verve.
It's not even funny how much these lyrics go above and beyond helping human expression.
watched this over n over on vhs when it 1st came out, still incredible vibe n energy
WHAT AN ARTFUL VIDEO ABOUT THE IRREPLACEABLE THE VERVE... THANK YOU, ANDY! Salute you from Romania, Eastern Europe!
Cheers Vlad!
Sadly that they placed a narration throughout Lucky Man. Hopefully we see this gig in full. I mean it was obviously professionally recorded
I saw them live in 1997 in NY and this brings back memories of the best concert I have ever seen
November 17th and 18th...The Mayan Theater L.A. I was there!
Me too, I drove from Texas for the shows! Epic trip...
When push comes to shove, the Detroit show at St Andrews is the best show I’ve ever seen. I thought it that night and still think it 25yrs and 200+ concerts later.
The show was originally supposed to be at the Palace of I remember correctly but yes that show and his solo show at Saint Andrews we're amazing orgasmic
Gracias!!
This is something i never knew existed, but now can't imagine not having seen it. Unbelievable. Thanks for uploading.
Still watch the VHS of this... Timeless footage of the greatest rock n roll band Verve #1
I loved Nick McCabe's guitar during bittersweet symphony 😍😍😍😍
HD Great! Long live The Verve
Incredible band, they where on another level.
My ex girlfriend , nicked my copy ! At least she had good taste. Great to see it again. Thanks 😃
I was so lucky to catch this tour! Thanks for sharing this!
A new decade , this is music..best 2 opening album tracks ever!...fact..
Star Sail & Slide Away
Probably the greatest song ever written.
This is history
What an incredible band they were…at the height of their powers here. Such a shame Ashcrofts ego destroyed the possibility of any more music as they could have created multiple incredible albums. McCabe, Jones & Salisbury are one of the greatest forces in U.K. music
They did create multiple incredible albums, A Storm in Heaven, A Northern Soul and Urban Hymns.
They did it.
Thanks Andy.... Was at Hague Hall in 98. Brilliant
I was at Haigh Hall, anall!
Only one of a kind the Verve love them to bits 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you for posting this! I was at the Detroit and Chicago shows. The band was on fire! And for the record, Richard wasn't lying! Detroit is the top!
The coolest band ever! loved them so much! wish they kept making music!
Amazing Atmosphere 🤜🏼🤛🏻
Many, many thanks for this!!!! :)
love you! thanks a lot!
I enjoyed it from start to finish wonderful music
Fantastic, absolutely love it !
Cool! Thanks for uploading this! I have the VHS tape!!! Haven't watched in years! The Verve were such an amazing band!
Fantastic man! Cheers for sharing..........
Thank you. Amazing vid. recording super clear.
I had this on video. Been looking for this for years. Come on 👌
superb! what a sound!
First time seeing this....fantastic!
Wow just now realizing you were the filmmaker Andy. THANK YOU for your incredible work here. You captured the gritty soul of Verve’s work and the sound is just incredible. Really appreciate it.
THIS IS MUSIC
Andy, Thanks so much for uploading this. The quality is superb. A real treat.
Such an impressive piece of film-making.
Right? They really went for it. And expressed the band well.
Great film!!! Love this band!!!
Was at the Atlanta gig, magic times.
Thank you for uploading this, the version you captured of Stormy Clouds always floors me. Great stuff, cheers.
This one slipped by my rarity radar. Many thanks Andy
Thanks Andy! I got this a few years back on VHS - amazing stuff. Best versions of Rolling People, Stormy Clouds and Life's An Ocean ever filmed/recorded. Thanks for being there to capture these amazing songs!
Thank you dude, for real... Amazing work and excellent takes of that tour.
The Real music fans know all about the Verve and their greatness. It's a shame that the members of the Verve make the best music when they're together, but they can't stand one another.
One of good bands that relied more on feel, atmospherics and tonality over orchestration…and pulled it off. Bittersweet Symphony is one of the greatest rock songs of all time…
Introspective journey really well filmed and with a stupendous editing, you are immersed in a continuous fluid between expression of the soul with a need to feel detached from the ground and almost hover over people and places really with style. to the chakra energy that the sound transmits .. HUGE !!
Awesome video thanks for posting!! ❤
This is really great. And the live version of Bitter Sweet Symphony is probably the best I've seen on UA-cam. So emotional and humble.
As a canadian kid, the verve were my first taste of mancunian music.
Nice to see another Canadian Verve fan man. They were from Wigan which is a bit more north of Manchester but they are still from that era.
@@XoXo475 How did you get into the Verve? What was the first song you heard?
The Best band of the 90s
Saw them at the Boston stop on this tour and it was good but kinda half full and it just didn’t quite click for me. I adore this band. This tour vid is such a treat and amazing quality thank you so much.
You have no idea how much I apprecciate this. This is gold. And thanks a lot for sharing it in HD. Have a great week!!!
That's why we did our best to make it, cheers
Thank you very, very much, Mr. Baybutt! This is a gem! A visual trip that dignifies the songs that still burns in my heart and soul. Cheers from Brasil!
SAME
tbh first time ive seen this! Just LOVE the music...
Thank You, Andy. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Cheers Kris - about time
Andy Baybutt ✊🏼 Indeed. Out there in its truest form. Cheers
Brilliant 👍
I've got this on VHS and no way to watch it anymore. Thanks so much for uploading, it's truly a holy artifact.
That VHS is the only reason why I kept my old video cassette player!
Great to see this again, they were the greatest band in the world at the time. Love them.
Yes they were top commercially. But the greatest band in the world in '97 was Radiohead. '93 Verve was them at their greatest.
@@Xirsuyx
I saw both bands live in ‘97 - both were great, though I always preferred The Verve.
They went tits up after McCabe left. Only he could do justice to Ashcrofts compositions.
@@Xirsuyx As a guitarist I personally think Greenwood and O'Brien live onstage are boring compared to Nick McCabe by himself and they're both bloody great, it's all opinions at the end of the day
There is nothing like Detroit! there is a reason it was called Detroit Rock City. The Brits back in the 60's said it was their goal to play the Grande Ballroom. Motown still rocks. And The Verve would have loved hanging out at Gar Woods mansion back then !
nice work, nice time....a doorless house in wigan i remember fondly
My first gig oasis be here now the verve supported and from that day to this ❤️❤️❤️
Awesome
Absolutely superb, thanks so much for uploading.
The band were at their absolute peak at this point, and the live shows were dynamite, as your film clearly illustrates. The momentum you’ve created is perfect for a young rock band on tour and very much on the way up.
There is so much about this film I love. The live sound is perfect, the sound design is great, despite some inferior interview sources, the camera work is excellent and if you were the only one shooting, you’ve done a great job editing together scenes from different songs / shows.
I hadn’t previously realised that The Video 1996 - 1998 VHS was largely culled from this film. I wonder what the story is here? Why hasn’t your film been available until now?
Anyway, great job so happy to see this.
Cheers mate. Yes, it was shot on my 16mm Arriflex, which was actually Derek Jarman's camera from the 1977 Punk Film 'Jubilee'. Not long after I finished cutting this with George in 1998, the band started having difficulties and so some of the things that were said in the film at that time no longer rang true. Subsequently, I was asked by Virgin to put out a compilation of our film work as a long form video when they split later that year. It is only available now as I have dug up the 16mm Master from under my stairs and transferred it to files.
Andy Baybutt thanks for the info, mate. And I’m sure I’m not the only one who is mighty glad you have dug up the master, your film so deserves to be seen.
Andy Baybutt one more thing: did you also produce that Urban Hymns recording sessions film: m.ua-cam.com/video/6lQ7sUmz7KE/v-deo.html ?
Yes, I have re-transferred that too. @@NachoVideo
Andy Baybutt great! Hope to see that online soon, Andy :)
This is nuts. I used to have this on VHS tape frm HMV. Ahhh...remember video tape? ....remember record shops? ...remember when there used to be bands that fuckin meant it & meant something to people. Halcyon days when folks actually valued music
Went ta hell, and keeps fuckin sinkin.
Yeah I remember "record shops"...I never set a foot in hmv unless I was shoplifting...expensive as fuck...one of the reasons they(hmv/virgin etc) went down in the late 90's....£16(or more) fer a cd in 95???...wankers...
My Verve story...by the time these guys arrived in Anaheim, CA. Nick had already left the band., I think I missed out. I think Massive Attack open though...I miss the mid to late 90s.
The verve. The band that should eh been. Rollin people
Great to watch, an amazing video, is there a way of watching it without UA-cam adverts at it ruins the flow, is it available to buy on hard copy or download?
Un groupe qui est gravé dans le coeur pour la vie ❤
Verve changed my whole approach to guitar. McCabe is a genius of effects, melody, tone and atmosphere. Saw them in '93 in NYC and in Philly in '97 sadly Nick had left the band at that point. They had to hire another guitar player and a lap steel player along with a keyboardist to replace him. Sounded shite and performance was uninspired. Played NOTHING from Storm in Heaven (still listen to this day) and only a few classics. A shame. To be clear I LOVE Urban Hymns, Northern Soul, and Forth. Sonicly ASiH was a game changer IMO. Finally, I recommend listening to ASiH on shrooms or LSD.
I prefer the Verve as a 5 piece, with Simon Tong around. They sounded Massive in the Urban Hymms album.
Me too (well, he was a big part in a long list of many others that showed me I resonated more with texture). I still remember hearing A Storm in Heaven in 93 and I during Star Sail I was hearing sounds I always wanted to hear and had no idea how to get it. My mastering engineer has told me he couldn't even count the number of bands he's done work for that were inspired by ASiH. In my book, irregardless of what Nick says (which his pride in it is likely so in his role in saving it - rightfully so I suppose), Urban Hymns was Richard's first solo record backed by Verve. Sadly, the more time that went on they by and large left the experimental stuff like A Storm in Heaven behind as Richard began to take over. Nick has said at one point he, Si, and Peter have kicked around the idea of doing something instrumental (this is after Black Submarine went into limbo) - which for me, who thinks Richard often didn't know when to shut up on the mic, the prospect of them doing something instrumental would be monumental.
I wish The Verve were still going fantastic band
The best band of the 90s.
Simon Jones looks like John Connor!
Perfect!! The Verve
God I love the verve!!!!
One of the most underated bands ever.
Ever!
