Was This Evanescence Song Really That Iconic?!

- Did this song define a genre? A year? A decade in music, perhaps? Bring Me To Life by Evanescence is one of those era defining songs that proliferated our hearts, souls and radio stations. What is it about this song? Why is it good? Is it all down to Amy Lee? Allow me to relive this song once more, 20 years later (yes this makes many of us feel old now), but this time listening a bit more carefully to hear what's really going. Did YOU like this song at the time? Is it impossible to hate it? Tell me.

As I remember, the record company insisted on the rapping - it wasn't something Amy & the band wanted - it was forced on them. I believe that Amy has performed the song without the rap part.
@ghost mall I actually think the opposite. I don't think she would have a career without that song and it's been nearly 20 years. Could the call and answer vocals have been done by another women ? Sure. But then you run the risk of going into the death metal female singers which wouldn't work at all. It needed that male vocal to contrast her voice.
@@andrepereira744 Thanks
Said the same above. I should read all the comments first. 😂
It ruins the song.
@ghost mall I get you dude but honestly, I am not a massive fan of this band or rather the Amy band so I read about her here and there. I bought the debut based on this song alone but I did a lot of that back then. Hundreds of albums based on one song I heard on the music channels of the day.
Anyone remember "The Rasmus"
'I've been watching, I've been waiting"
Catchy shit.
Everything is hindsight and I honestly don't think, taking out his vocal or any other male vocal would make the song better or actually successful which was kind of my point. This isn't really about if the song can stand on it's own without the male vocal. We unfortunately can't un hear that now. It's drilled in to our mind that this is how the song sounds even if there are other versions.
When the somewhat metal guitars kick in, the male vocal is needed in the song to contrast her almost operatic vocals.
Yeah you could have thrown away the rap stuff but that was the time. However, the guys call and answer vocal is really a staple of the song.
Here's a fun story for you. Based on this song I even went out and got the male singers first album. The band was called 12 Stones, just had to look it up. The first song was called 'Broken'. It was ok but then you realise it was just that generic sound of the day and strangely his vocal is almost mediocre on these songs.
Oh, all hail to Finch and Trapt from that era. Terrible stuff (not Finch, they were alright).
Trapt not so much.
Sheesh, I wrote an essay. Sorry about that.
Oh I remember playing that cd over and over and over again my baby blue discman. What a time to be alive!
I've still got my baby blue discman 😂
I've always respected the hell out of Amy Lee's voice and musicianship - she's pretty skilled. Great look for you, Mr. Hawkins.
I've seen Seether live and without Amy Broken just isn't the same
Agree, it's a shame her ego killed the band.
The song didn't have her originally.
@@Oppetsismiimsitsitc bullshit
I didn't really know the band that well, but wasn't she the one that had a lot of issues singing in key live? Maybe that was just based on 2 gigs I've seen and not fair
after a positively shite day at work ,nothing beats watching mr hawkins dissect an old classic.....bloody love this channel
This song was mind blowing when I first heard it as a teenager.
Can't stop watching these vids, binged so many today. Bloody good stuff.
Evanescence - Fallen and Avril Lavigne - Let Go. These were two albums I was listening to a lot whilst going through a bad patch. Soon afterwards The Darkness came along with PTL. It was actually a good period for many bands thinking back on it.
Permission To Land, I played that album to death. Saw The Darkness live twice at uni (they were supported by Young Heart Attack....also excellent, met Frenchie, YHA guitarist, and Jen, YHA lead singer, awesome people) The Darkness were of course absolutely brilliant. Permission is still one of my favourite albums, bought it day it released
"Jamie Lofts" both musicians were my gateway into Rock and Metal. If I hadn't discovered Avril Lavigne (Despite only releasing two good albums) I wouldn't have got into Evanescence, Linkin Park, blink-182 Green Day,, Korn, Slipknot, Deftones, System Of A Down, Bring Me The Horizon, Three Days Grace, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Sum 41, Papa Roach, Limp Bizkit, Good Charlotte, No Doubt, Stone Sour, Metallica etc
What a tune this really is. Nice one for going through this one for us, Justin! Amy Lee’s voice is just unbelievable.
Absolutely loving hearing you talk about these early 2000 bangers lately. They were the soundtrack to mine and many other people's awakening as rock fans.
It won't be the most popular request, but I would love to hear you talk about NOFX. You've never really ventured into the American skate-punk sound and I'd love to hear your take on such a divisive yet interesting band.
They don't have a lot of music videos to choose from, but you can't really go wrong with 'Stickin' in my eye' or 'Seeing double at the triple rock'.
My new favourite channel on the tube of you, thanks Justin!
oh thanks for reviewing this, so many memories
At 9:19 - 9:27, Justin entered the REAL DARKNESS and almost became a goth rock version of Gollum! "I've been livin'the lie!.....and bring meee the preciousnesssssss from the hobbitses!"
Lookin' damn sharp there Justin!
Ha ha, that is exactly what I was thinking when he got to that part of the breakdown. I loved it and I was laughing a lot.
Yes, goth gohhhlehmmzz. Many great song efects that episode! Just should get a job making noises with his throat and mouth somehow?
You're really getting better at these type of videos. I love this episode.
Thanks!
@@JustinHawkinsRidesAgain review another Band-Maid song, go for their instrumental tracks like Onset official live video. That's the one that made lots of people respect them for actual musicians. Any way, up to you.
Justin, your hot takes are both informative and hilarious. Your knowledge of music is vast and impressive. You are always kind and supportive of your fellow artists. I am so glad I found your channel.
Love this chanel a little bit more every episode! Cheers Justin!

Sorry for your loss. I hope the wake gave you the comfort you needed.

another great video and another great look!!!
The whole Fallen album is a gem, love it from start to finish.
I was so disappointed listening to that album. I thought Evanescence was gonna be one of the best bands ever based on the singles, only to find out they were the only good songs.
Fallen is bogged down by mediocre, monotonous guitarist that was in the band then. Their other albums are far better.
@@carpediemearth You have yourself to blame for looking for the wrong things in that album then. Fallen is an album that is supposed to be enjoyed for what it is, a melodic, and hook-driven rock album with good pop sensibilities. The edge is barely there, more on the band's image than anywhere else, you're not supposed to be looking for amazing guitar work on Fallen of all albums. I enjoy Fallen the same way I enjoy an Avril Lavigne album or Linkin Park album, it's just fun pop. If I want to "get serious" I'll go listen to Terminal Redux by Vektor, Hand. Cannot. Erase. by Steven Wilson, any Opeth classic, Haken, DT, Symphony X, there I'll rightfully expect - and succeed - to find god tier guitar work.
@@DiegoDeschain I'm not looking for expert solos or even solos, Fallen doesn't even rank on a basic listenable level for guitar; that guitarist's "riffs" are far below basic, frequently repetitive throughout the album that it almost feels like you're listening to the same songs multiple times if it weren't for the singer's vocal melodies and non-guitar melodies. It's essentially the same guitar play throughout 99% of the album just with a few effects. The guitar on that album might as well have been replaced by synths and probably sounded better cause there was no effort or imagination whatsoever in the guitar writing/playing. I read that the engineer even had to loan the guitarist his guitar gear.
I wouldn't call Fallen a gem from start to finish. The only thing listenable in it are Amy Lee's voice and melodies; the guitar sucks 99% of it and the session drums are subpar at best; I can't even comment on bass as I don't remember even registering it. Fallen is also way overproduced. It's unfortunate because many of the songs are fundamentally solid but monotonized and stripped of musicality and dynamics because of the sorry excuse for a guitarist. He should've put his ego aside and let others who know about music and are creative take the reigns.
You're way off, the genre doesn't matter. The fact that the guitar, which is supposed to "support" most of the album, is extremely basic and repetitive and does nothing remotely creative to support the songs is the problem. Some of the songs on Fallen have aged badly on the record precisely because of his crappy, mediocre guitar play that tried to imitate the basics of nu-metal/rap rock of the time as well. I remember an early interview saying that the guitarist was a big fan of rap rock of that era, so no surprise.
@@carpediemearth so...we agree. Great.
Just excellent. Thanks Justin.💜🙏🏽
Brilliant episode that Justin,,Nice one 😁✌
Always enjoy the heck out of your videos Justin! You're an absolute LEGEND man! 👍
This is one of the three songs that introduced me to rock when I was about 9, 10 years old. Still love this song and band.
Really appreciate your breakdowns of songs, these vids have opened up my listening towards songs, thanks. You should have a crack at Big Wreck, watch their live performances for Suhr.
My Immortal and Love Exists are two of my favourite songs ever. Her version of I will follow you into the dark is amazing
Amazing bud, you got me with that ending. Classic Juzzie!
I love the way you dissect the music. Makes me hear things in a different way! I would love for you to check out the cure (especially the „wish“ record is my fave) or more of the 1975! I think you would find some gems on the third record
omg I love your suit 🙏
We've all been there! Cheers Justin!!
Great look!
Extended theme song is a plus.
Your guitar playing is as wonderfully straight from the hip, as are you.
Big fan...
Have you ever listened to Talk Talk's Colour of Spring, Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock. Not my usual guitar based stuff but these albums are a different level of quality. The late Mark Hollis was genius and his voice really gets into your soul.
Colour of spring is a superb album.
Agree with you all the way.
The later Talk Talk stuff absolutely defines the term "soundscape". I listen to Colour of Spring a lot and it always makes me sad that Mark Hollis is no longer with us
He truly was so amazingly talented. I heard one song, I ended up with all. So many Talk Talk songs in the soundtrack of my life.
I myself listen to Talk Talk's "Life's What You Make It" twice a week as a mantra/brain dump of sorts...
Yeah, you can't even compare this thrashy stuff to albums like that. Night and Day when it comes to creativity.
One of your videos was recommended for me the other day. I watched it and am so glad I did. I stayed and have watched many more now as you make me laugh :-)
I was always a big fan of Amy Lee & Shaun Morgan (of Seether) together on the song ‘Broken’.
Love your intro today, Justin!
Another great video Justin. Keep it coming quick and thick. Also loved the video you did on Rory Gallagher, he and you are two of my favourite artists.
I haven't heard a bad song from Evanescence. By the way, the shorter hair really suits you, Justin!
This is probably your best reaction video so far! Great work my guy, keep em coming
I've been watching your videos for the last two hours. Subscribed. Greetings from Argentina.
Lols new to the channel and absolutely loving it. Was not a fan of your music back in the day but I think I will revisit your work. Thanks for the amazing content
Amy Lee and Evanescence bridging that gap between ghostly, ethereal lyrics and hard rock. It is a great song and came about at a good time for them, as there was a lot of music in the early 00's just trying to pull in a bit of a different direction. This was one of the successes...
songs take me back to a certain time and this one , I remember hearing it on the way to my first day at a new school. Literally had it stuck in my head all day 😂 whenever I hear it I think back to that day
Fun fact: according to Amy, the record label told them they needed a male rapper in the band in order to get a contract cause they wanted a female fronted version of Linkin Park or smth. They refused, but later on the label said they would sign them if they had a rapper feature the first single, and they agreed... so there was no rap part in the original version of the song, they added it by request.
Also Amy didn't want this song to be the first/lead single, she wanted Going Under to be first but again the label insistied.
Not sure if this song has aged that well. Amy sounds great. But the Rap part is pure cringe. Oh lord save us.
@@thebailey67 The song, like nearly all nu-metal, hasn't aged well.
@@thebailey67 It was just bad. The only thing that saved it was a very pretty Amy Lee and that magical voice of hers. Out of the 85ish songs Amy has done this one with the male voice added ranks 85. It was just so out of place.
Also the label originally wanted Mike Shinoda to be the rapper but he declined
@@iliketrains3495 I didn't know that! I don recall seeing Mike collaborate with any other bands as a rapper
I love this song, loved your breakdown. You do make me laugh
You managed to fit an entire self indugent solo into the intro - that's impressive - truly rock and roll 🤘
Thank YOU, most effervescent man, for entertaining and giving so freely of yourself. Cheers!
Thanks Jeanne!
Justin, i loved Hot Legs, 'Red Hot Fever'. Could you talk us through that album? Would love to hear your insight into a few of the tracks....also get the bloody thing on spotify!
Love the videos mate, so great to hear an actual musicians insight into the writing, producing and performing of tracks!
Good stuff thxs again Justin
Justin rocks! Good stuff here Buddy.
The band are still going. Their next two albums after Fallen topped the American charts. Amy took a long break to have a family and movie soundtrack work.
Really appreciated the 9:20 jump cut had me in stitches.
I’m sure it’s just coincidence but I’d still like to congratulate you on the part you played in helping this song become no.1 on iTunes this week 😜
I love your content and the input you have on the art we are all passionate about.
Hahahaha Your commentary about the screen Whisper has me laughing so hard I had to pull over on the side of the road
Fallen is a great album. I was 38 ( 😳 !!!) when it came out.
Truly, your titles are throwing me for a loop, mr. Hawkins. I love The Darkness, which drew me to your channel, but I was almost annoyed when I saw this video pop up. "What do you mean, was this really that iconic? Yes!" Ah yes, true British irony.
Thankfully, you did not disappoint. One of the first things you said about Evanescence is exactly what enraptures me to this band: her incredibly powerful voice. It's haunting.
By the way, in search of more bands with heavy, but melodious guitars like Evanescence, I found The Darkness.
LMAO 😂😂😂 what happened to you today Justin? This was even more chaotic than usual, and I LOVED it! But oof, your poor guitar! No one’s going to donate to your headphone fund until you buy a guitar stand! 😝
😆
I mean I was laughing - must be the effects of wearing a suit in the heat
🤣
Worst video EVER!!! Terrible band haha
Very good song. Still a great listen when it comes on the radio.
thanks for the video. I had always overlooked stuff like this or Muse as something 14 year old girls listened to because it was on the soundtrack of their sparkly vampire movies. I will re-consider my bias.
Amy Lee is an incredibly talented person. I absolutely love her voice, and she has definitely been an influence/inspiration for me as a songwriter, singer, and frontperson. Thank you for this video (though I do wish it had been a reaction to ANY other Evanescence song other than this one. haha) Peace and Love and Rock n' Roll!
Thanks for demonstrating that what this song needs is Gollum handling the rap part, my precious.
Great review as always Justin. I loved Evanescence back in the day...really loved them. Saw them in Cardiff too, brilliant live. I've always identified with anything gothic; musically, aesthetically, literary and in movies...especially the old Hammer horror movies.
I agree, Amy has a beautiful, haunting voice, not unlike Enya's. She sang 'My Immortal' live in Cardiff, just her and her keyboard...mesmerising 😍
The Count Dracula look suits you...very handsome 🕸️🧛🦇🍷☠️ 😀
😄 liked this even before you got to the meat and potatoes of the video. That intro was superb 😂🙌🏻

It's really obvious how much Justin enjoyed doing this one. And why not? It's a classic for a reason.
"Ere, 'ow comes 'e's all dressed up like Count Dracula?" Haha I love the Mick Jagger impersonations.
She has the most beautiful tone in her voice, like nothing else...
'Call me when you're sober' is another good song by Evanescence!
This made me chuckle in so many places. Conspiratorially whispering his rap and then the throat clearing growl hahaha
This band was excellent, the album Fallen is a truly great record.
@Edward Elizabeth Hitler I've seen them live. They are amazing. They put on a heck of a show and the vocals are on point.
@Edward Elizabeth Hitler they have gotten way better since. So far they have been one of the best shows I've been to.
@Edward Elizabeth Hitler if you haven't seen them since, then I definitely reccomend you do. Like I said, they are amazing now and definitely worth the money. I saw them when they were on tour with Halestorm last year and the two singers performed a cover of Linkin Park's "Heavy". I seriously think you should check it out. Several recordings were posted online.
@Edward Elizabeth Hitler I don't think the output has been the same since Ben Moody left, he was a major driving force behind Fallen and penned a lot of the hits on that album (hence why his later band was called We Are the Fallen).
Fallen is a fantastic album, there is no doubt about that. Better than The Open Door
You are so stylish. Well done. x
Never heard it before and quite pleased.
Question for the Q&A Episodes :) Has Singing and playing guitar always come naturally to you? Are there any complicated guitar melodies that are tricky to sing over live?
Great! Most importantly, could you walk us through your theme song? I can't ever seem to get it to sound right.
Shared a Bandwagon with Paul McCoy and 12 Stones in 2012 when we were touring with Taproot and Smile Empty Soul. It's crazy to see this song still being played and talked about to this day.
Hey Justin love your channel with all my heart and your music even more with other parts….anyways why is Last of our kind not on Spotify anymore? I love all my children the same but I’d be lying if I didn’t have favorites. Thanks again man 🤙🏼 Comments!!
Damn good look you've got there Mr Hawkins! 🤘🏼☠️🤘🏼
I love her voice! Joel
Justin, I find listening to your eloquent voice addictive and I come away from your videos with better pronunciation, clarity of thought and an even stronger English accent... Much better than my usual stuttering swollen coarse voice that sounds as bad as boiling pork smells. This of course means that you're better for my health and therefore can never stop doing this. I’m sorry for repeating myself but I really want to know what you think to this song, To the Hellfire by Lorna Shore. They’re a death core band and the lead singers vocals are not human 😅
Hello Justin Hawkins!
