    Apologies. UA-cam again stuck a bunch of ads in between! I had removed this by default. Just took them out now. At least still early. Sorry for the inconvenience.

      Hi Andrew! Thank you I worked hard. Actually I think you guys have a nice sounding anthem and I really love the music from this artist as he's very cinematic. Also, growing up the only TV channels I saw were American ones that use to play the anthem then go to white noise. I was sort of trying to reproduce this on the radio here going off air. Thanks for watching!

    Nice radio and restoration. The only piece of advice I can give you is that if you need to sharpen your scissors (to cut fishing line or whatever else) go cut some sandpaper with it first, never fails. Take care and I hope that Mrs. RRG lets you put it in your room ;)

    • @RetroRepairGuy
      @RetroRepairGuy  Рік тому

      Hi Peter! Hope all is well. Thank you very much! Oh yeah sandpaper? I was going to use a blade but then I remembered the last time I did that while installing a new radio for Mrs. RRG a while back and cut myself open to the bone and taped everything up with electrical tape until I got sutures nine hours later. Somehow I'm not as courageous anymore! 😂😂 Yeah she caved in and let me keep it after she saw the video. She just said "wow what a difference, it's so clean". I knew that was my unwritten authorization. 😉

    I left a comment yesterday, but it disappeared. I had this clock growing up until my parents upgraded to a digital one. Watching your videos brings me back to being a little boy. I feel like the food critic from Ratatouille when he took a bite of the dish and brought him back as a little boy. Excellent material.

    Nice work. Flip clocks have become a collector's item. You can even buy a new one from a company called Twemco. Radio Shack had some nice products back in the 80's. Too bad they mostly went out of business. (I wish they would have stuck with what they were good at instead of trying to be a cell phone shop in the early 2000's). I live near a place that specializes mostly in ham radios and electronic components that is an authorized RadioShack distributor. You can still buy Soldering Irons and multimeters that are radio shack branded.

    • @RetroRepairGuy
      @RetroRepairGuy  Рік тому

      Hi Tron! Hope you tried the VCR! Yeah the flip clocks have become insanely expensive, which is why I was so happy to find one for $14.99! But people do exaggerate at $200-300. I think I saw a review on Twemco and they weren't so good? But I could be mistaken. I had no idea you could still purchase Radio Shack branded stuff. But yes, they should have stuck to what they did best. At the same time, everyone was trying to survive over the years with Sears closing in Canada and many stores in the US., Amazon taking over everything and so forth. Sad but I rejoice by restoring.

    Been working on old 12" B/W sold state Hitachi TV from 1968 for a guy that wants it fixed. I have almost finished recapping the set. I'm just waiting on one cap that didn't have in my stash to arive. I have had a few flipp clocks but I have never been able find that I could get working. One clock radio I recently recapped was an 1969 RCA in a real wood cabinet.

    I was born in year 2000 and the only thing I ever bought from radio shack was a cheap portable DVD player that started to scratch my disk in short order. That being said I do have a lot of there old stuff from the 90s and older that I have found throw the years.

    Lovely vid! Did the Mrs let you put it on your nightstand? lol I hope so! I have this exact clock in my bedroom as we speak! It was my grandpa's, on his nightstand since the 70s, he passed in 96, Grandma sold their house in the early oughts, but she brought it along, and I ended up adopting it when she passed and have had it in my various bedrooms for nearly a decade now! As far as I can tell it's been in near constant operation for more than 40 years, and everything still works perfectly! Now I feel like I should open it up and clean the inside but I'm afraid to mess with it since it's still working!

    • @RetroRepairGuy
      @RetroRepairGuy  Рік тому

      Hi Lauren! I received a lot of resistance but she really did let me put it there. I wish I had kept my parents and grandmas' clocks over the years. These clocks are not that difficult if you are used to open things but because everything is on one board it's a bit tricky. As you saw, even someone like me with experience managed breaking the tuner cord and that is something you don't want to do. If it's just cleaning, yes go ahead. I had to unplug it from the wall though because at 3:00 am in the dead of night I swear I could hear that little enigmatic motor. Maybe I'm just not used to it anymore. But they are beautiful and love it on the nightstand. Thanks for watching!

    Never use WD40 on those motors. Use sewing machine oil or Turbine Oil. You need to go back and spray the motor down with alcohol to get rid of any WD40 residue. It will eventually gum up and stall the motor. This comes from years of experience working with vintage phono motors in RCA 45 players from the 50's and other record changers. They have to be completely disassembled, the bearing assemblies soaked in Naptha, then relubricated.
