    Looking forward to Marrow! And speaking of which, ever since I first heard it I've imagined it in a small jazz trio setting with double bass, piano and drums (and possibly spoken words or something for lyrics). Realising now how hard it is to perform I'd still implore you to make it happen. Please, please, please make that version come to life! Pretty please. With sugar on top.

  • @moranrr1

    Love the channel Yogev! I was wondering if you could help clarify something about Meshuggah. You've described their music as polyrhythmic, but wouldn't it be more accurate to say it's actually polymetric? If I understand correctly, a polymeter occurs when two time signatures are played at the same time and they eventually line up after a certain number of bars. Judging from the breakdowns you do of the meshuggah songs it seems that's what happens in most of them. It would be great if you did a video explaining the difference between the two concepts. Cheers man!

    • @graysonwilson-cacciapalle7989

      It's semantics, a lot of people use the terms interchangeably, but you are correct.

    • @YogevGabay
      @YogevGabay  2 роки тому

      You're both right yeah.
      I actually don't "agree" with these terms, but I get what you say.
      When I was learning about polyrhythms in Israel we didn't even have that term "polymeter" so for me, polyrhythms are the umbrella term for all of these.
      But yeah, semantically you're correct!

    Hi Yogev,
    Drummer, slav, and Time Consuming enthusiast here: If you'd like to check out an Animals As Leaders song that has polyrhythms embedded in the song, check out the first 30 seconds, as well as the final portion, of the song "Cognitive Contortions"; the track starts out on a normal feel, but then some weird dotted-eighth-note bullshit happens and it switches the time feel up completely. Might be fun to analyze what the guitar riff is doing in contrast to the hi-hat both at the beginning and the end.

    Hi Yogev! I've had a burning question about a song for a long time, and since you were one of the performers you're my last hope to solve it, so pleeeease, help me!
    It's about the performance of 'Drip' by Tigran Hamasyan that you made with the Berklee ensemble; my question is: what's the measure on the first bar of the melody? (when Tigran begins to sing, that motif...) I've seen many transcriptions but no one feels quite right with what I hear; what I hear is a septuplet of 8th notes with an 8th note silence between the first note, the B, and the third note, the D, ending in the C# before the 3rd beat... How wrong am I? What's the secret? It's making me crazy! If you may please solve this conundrum I would be endlesly thankful man... also, big fan of your chanel, already subscribed 😉 Keep on with the groove! 🤘🏻😁

    • @YogevGabay
      @YogevGabay  Рік тому

      @@CarlosVoces so!
      This may disappoint you, or maybe not.
      But it's in 4.
      It's some figure between triplets and 16th notes, but I it's not calculated. It's a simple rhythmic figure that tigran takes and adds LOADS of attitude and "flavor" to by playing it in a very laid back way.
      I'm not sure if the original "version" is in triplets or not, but it doesn't matter. It's not a rigid rhythmic grid, it's way way looser.
      And when done correctly it can sound so convincing that you may get confused and apply some other subdivision to it.
      Long story short, 4/4 hahhaa
