I'm a firemen and one of the front line pumpers we use still has a Detroit two stroke in it. It's more dependable than our 2015 engine. Those detroits are all sound though lol. People at bus stops don't appreciate when they get coal rolled on them either.

My on occasion my dad drove an Autocar dump truck with a Detroit in it, he hated it, said it was so sloppy and spongy compared to his Mack. Said a Detroit has a lot of power but you have to stay jammed in the throttle to get any of it.

I have a ton of respect for anyone who admits they aren't comfortable or they are intimidated driving a vehicle, no matter what the vehicle is.....you sir get a GIANT THUMBS UP FOR THAT!!!! Most people won't admit it & will continue to drive the vehicle they are extremely uncomfortable with & their drive normally ends in one of these ways.......an accident with body damage, mechanical damage, maybe an injury to someone & if nothing else......definitely a foul smell in the vehicle because they shit themselves.

If you can find a ladder truck with rear steer you should really try driving the back, it's a experience you won't forget. I was a fireman in the 70s and we had a ladder truck from the 40s with a open cabs front and rear, in the back you only steer but you had a button to signal the front driver to stop or brake. Backing into the narrow parking area at the firehouse was a challenge to say the least.

I was sacred to death the first time I drove an engine. You did alright. Just remember to stay close to the center line. People will move over. You don't want to slide off the edge of the road especially if you have water in the tank. It may result in a nasty rollover.

Haha the first time driving a cabover is always the best one. The seating is so high up and you sit on top or in front of the front axle so the turning feels wonky and it's difficult to stay on you own lane, especially on a narrow road. He's right about the feeling of going fast. I was scared the first time my instructor made me go on the highway: the speed feels double.
My first cabover was a Sisu E11 -offroad truck built for the Finnish Defence Forces. 6x6, 11L Cummins Turbo Diesel paired with an aggressive Allison 6-speed automatic. Wild ride, a good time.

My wife's grandpa does excavating and he says driving a dump truck or any other vehicle of that size is a lot like driving a motorcycle as far as having to be constantly alert. I've driven his 89 tandem freightliner dump a few times and it is a whole nother world up there. Very fun but very stressful

That 2-stroke diesel sounds awesome. It's deep and throaty (hehehe) like a diesel but the exhaust pulses are twice as fast as a diesel, making it sound like it's revving high like a gas engine.

Look at this video of someone completely new to large vehicles and now think of when you last saw an in service fire engine heading to a call they are practically weaving through traffic like a car (the fact that they have sirens people are supposed to let them through helps but still) and taking corners at full send. Fire engine drivers have to be some of the most skilled drivers in the world period. Even some of the most seasoned mountain truckers couldnt handle a rig the way the fire department does
