That's what I was thinking. Why is the gearing on the steering so messed up? It would be much easier to drive if you didn't need to spin the yoke 360 degrees or whatever it is to reach full lock.
So that's just General Motors standard shitty design? And its just you really notice how bad the steering is when you have to use a stupid yoke instead of a steering wheel? Ha my bad.
An _amazing_ looking car but definitely not meant to be driven around. I would love to own a KITT replica but it's definitely the type of car that's best for its looks than its driveability, sadly.
I knew a guy with a KITT REPLICA....he had a nascar style quick change steering wheel that was normal size for driving and when he got to shows he would pop it off and throw on the Kitt style one....he said it was undriveable with it haha I never drove it but these guys pretty much confirm it
i think in a dangerous Situation, he have no chance. Also i see no MP/h Display, nothing. The Wheel is Terror. If it s my Car, i change this to a normly wheel. the next is: he not eaven have a Chance, to change ligthment, window washers and driving direction, he always have to grap over the wheel for the buttons... absolutly not for normly driving. All other is Deco, hm, maybe: only for a freak, but for a normly car, this is nothing.
Very cool, yeah I always thought that steering wheel was the most unsafe thing. Watching the show I thought they must have set it up so it only needed to turn a very small amount go-cart style.
Very good documentary. I never knew the actual KITT from Knight Rider would be so difficult to drive in everyday circumstances. Still a very cool car! In fact I'm starting my collection of Firebirds and Trans-Ams. One of the first vehicles I hope to acquire will be an aftermarket conversion of the 82 Firebird Trans Am to look like KITT from Knight Rider.
Nahh kitt doesn't know the guy and is pretending to be a normal replica kitt and just choosing not to speak ; ) As soon as the guy leaves all the simulated rattle sounds will turn off .. his true muscle engine sound will be unsilenced and the turbine sound will also be unsilenced... he's in undercover mode.. lol
XenomorphLV426 love the screen name. That's my favorite movies of all time. I still watch them on a regular basis & just finally bought the PS4 game the other day
I watched numerous episodes of Knight Rider over the years and always noticed that David Hasselhoff's seat was all the way back. He is a very tall man. After watching this it makes me wonder how he was able to drive this car for the show at all.
+o Lemurs I'd still say it would be the best set up for the wheel. As he said the wheel is like the size of a bus and he isn't gonna be racing and stuff with it so a tight steering rack (maybe one turn to lock on each side) and a power steering pump to compensate would work
FallenPhoenix86 my bad. Bell 222. Point was, it was an air taxi with plastic bits on it. Sad to hear it crashed though. One of my fave shows as a kid. Weird how the feature length pilot episode was 18 rated (in the UK), mainly because hawk said "Fk" once, and I think there may have been a silhouetted nude scene?
Chris Winter Yeah, the UK 18 rating has puzzled me since I first watched it... and for the sake of nostalgia I think I know what I'll be doing tonight.
FallenPhoenix86 And back on Topic, I have ALL Knight Riders on DVD :D Educated my kids a while back :) And there's a kitt replica for sale in Australia. Am I tempted? Very! But I'm meant to be saving for a Ferrari lol.
That would feel like I was driving with my flappy paddle shifters! The series was great in the eighties when I had no idea how cars drove properly but looking at this..............well! The innocence of youth!
I thought the filming location looked kind of familiar. Then you hit Rt 61 and I realized where you were. I grew up in the Skook, left in 92, but you never forget! Video showed up in my UA-cam recommended videos.
Is it just me or does this car has an insane amount of steer-slop??! All i know/remember from a docu about the Knight Rider, was that the car was anything but impressive performance wise. I still like what they did here, it looks like you step back into the era..amazing build
It's probably got the usual F Body steering aka steering gear that wears out pretty fast and gets lots of play. Why American car companies put rack and pinion in some models and used the old steering boxes in others I couldn't tell you.
Has so mich potential. I said it on the other video, but if i was to do it with unlimited budget, i would ecotec swap it, connect nos to the turbo buttons, change the steering ratio, and connect all of the screens and peripherals. I would probably connect all of the buttons to do something too.
There needs to be a movie car meetup. Like cars and coffee but for movie cars. All the DeLorean replicas, KITT replicas, Starsky and Hutch, Bullitt, Smokey and the Bandit. All of em
Did it at least have a working fuel gauge? I can see that the speed and tach are not functioning yet. 3 basic gauges you should get working first are the oil pressure, speedometer (because tickets suck) and a fuel gauge.
Speedometer can be emulated via a GPS app on a smartphone. Not perfect, but it'll work temporarily. Fuel gauge shouldn't matter if you just make sure to fill it up after every other trip. Oil pressure should be done ASAP though.
I'm with the others. I liked the remake. It would have been better if they could have kept Will Arnett as KITT though. He was the original voice until GM pulled him.
That thing needs a MUCH quicker steering rack with a far smaller lock-to-lock steering wheel rotation, just like any open wheeler/DTM car of today. Onlu than it'll be comfortable to drive. Also removing the stalks and using one of those buttons for that might be handy too.
@joesfoxbodyandmusclecargarage That's an American for you with more knowledge about US cars. I didn't know that as a European, but yeah, I meant to change the lock to lock and have a faster ratio box in there. Thanks for the insight!
"Its not a driver's car. It's designed for the show.". Reminds me of how terrible the gen 5/6 Transformer Camaros are to drive. Movie prop first, car second.
I love your car! I can't imagine how hard it is to drive with this steering wheel! Funny how Knight Rider shoe seems so corny watching it today, but I LOVED IT as a kid!
Are there any of these cars out there that have a significantly reduced steering ratio so the control flopper wouldn't be such a monumental liability in maneuverability?
No rev counter, screens don't work, buttons don't do anything, items like the key pad are missing.. This must be the worst KITT replica I've ever seen to be honest.. Come back when you finish it.
Curious. Are the speedometer and the Tachometer connected? I am not seeing any digits on the electronic readouts changing with the speed of the car and the RPMs. I'm thinking it may be dim or too much lighting shining on the dashboard.
Daniel Vallah have you ever drive a car? Then you should know it's normal to complain a weird car like this. Btw, he's just trying to convey the driving experience to us.
I still wanna get one :-) ..but mine would have some modifications. For example indicator lights would be on simple buttons that are on the steering wheel and then have a laser that points to the steering wheel, so when you turn back, it detects it and switches the indicator off. Also i'd make most of the stuff on voice commands, hook it all up to a good gaming laptop and hide it inside the dash, where the 2 monitors are, i'd have 1 bigger monitor + keyboard that slides out. That would control the voice commands. Nitros is also a good idea, which would obviously be the pursuit mode. He said he has cameras but non working, so that's surely something i've had in mind too. Even tho it's so old series, i still want one :)
"Confirming that the scanner light is off, we don't want to get in trouble" Not that you won't because of the steering yoke, no rear view mirror-plus, you're not wearing your seat belts.
Here in Germany we have one rebuild too, but it is forbidden to use the Gullwing Steering driving in official Streets, he must change for driving, only use in Show case.
I love how when this video came out everyone universally agreed the yoke was a terrible idea but now that tesla has put one in their cars everyone's a huge simp and it's suddenly fine.
If you’re going to have yokes instead of a full steering wheel, you need tighter steering so that you don’t end up needing to turn the wheel so far to barely steer in either direction.
Right hand on the angle while left hand underneath and vice versa when turning, then you can watch the knees better because your hands are more inside than in the way
"I'm Mr. Regular, and welcome to Jackass"
*Slams steering yoke into family jewels*
this shit caught me off guard while eating and I blew snot out my nose. thnx :')
HAHAHAHA
hahaha, I got a notification on this and laughed all over again
That car looks completely bad ass...
Another notification.
More laughs.
This is the #1 most goodest UA-cam comment joak ever
"Looks just like KITT from the show Knight Rider!"
"It is KITT from Knight Rider"
"woah"
It looks much like driving a life support machine
What is a life support machine?
Darth Vader's Bathroom.
@@b4ds33d You'll use it soon enough.
Magnus Maximus that makes zero sense.
@@b4ds33d it'll make sense soon enough.
This is easily the most enjoyable Tesla Model S Plaid review I've watched
I'm early let me think of a yoke...
That steering wheel.
that not joke
lol
I, "rudder," you not.
'wheel'
Can the height of the steering wheel be adjusted?
It REALLY needs a faster steering rack.
That's what I was thinking. Why is the gearing on the steering so messed up? It would be much easier to drive if you didn't need to spin the yoke 360 degrees or whatever it is to reach full lock.
ChristophInns Why is it messed up?
Because it's a normal trans am.
So that's just General Motors standard shitty design? And its just you really notice how bad the steering is when you have to use a stupid yoke instead of a steering wheel? Ha my bad.
ChristophInns It's FINE for a normal steering wheel, I would imagine.
For a yoke, it's AWFUL.
Yes, it's no forklift.
Looks awesome, but also looks super sketchy to drive lol.
Would be a great car to put in your garage and have as a talking point at parties.
made me wonder is the steering wheel connected to front wheels at all xD Cool nostalgia thou.
An _amazing_ looking car but definitely not meant to be driven around. I would love to own a KITT replica but it's definitely the type of car that's best for its looks than its driveability, sadly.
Oddly, as a kid, all I wanted was a talking car that could self drive. The more that technology becomes a reality, the less I want one.
This steering wheel is too dangerous lol
Teslaaaaaaa plaidddddd
It’s not though
I love that there's a Delorean right in front of you. Classic! :)
"Sir, do you know how fast you were going?"
"000 MPH, officer"
Hahahaha good one
I knew a guy with a KITT REPLICA....he had a nascar style quick change steering wheel that was normal size for driving and when he got to shows he would pop it off and throw on the Kitt style one....he said it was undriveable with it haha I never drove it but these guys pretty much confirm it
I never gave any thought to the steering wheel being so close to the driver's legs. Definitely an exercise in form over function. Love the look of it.
If it had a quick disconnect wheel & a normal wheel it would be easier to drive. Keep the yoke for car shows.
I was thinking the same thing. I was also thinking that the turn signal stalk could be re-positioned.
i think in a dangerous Situation, he have no chance.
"normly" ist kein englisches Wort.
SamTeks
stimmt :D
Ich bin ja auch kein englischer Mensch :D
und mein Englisch, stammt eher vom Englischem Patient ^^
hm.
normly eben :D
*lach* :D
It needs a different steering rack with a really small ratio so you barely turn the wheel to make the car turn...
Very cool, yeah I always thought that steering wheel was the most unsafe thing. Watching the show I thought they must have set it up so it only needed to turn a very small amount go-cart style.
Yeah thats what Lexus did recently
Very good documentary. I never knew the actual KITT from Knight Rider would be so difficult to drive in everyday circumstances. Still a very cool car! In fact I'm starting my collection of Firebirds and Trans-Ams. One of the first vehicles I hope to acquire will be an aftermarket conversion of the 82 Firebird Trans Am to look like KITT from Knight Rider.
Nice! Knight Rider and Dukes Of Hazard were my two favorite shows when I was growing up in the 80's. Great video guys!
Yes! Mine too man!
Chris'sVids79 A-Team
It's 1985 again. I remember watching the same 4 episodes, recorded on an old tape on the lowest setting.
Is KITT dead? Why is he not talking? What did you do to KITT???!
probably because hes not turned on
Not finished yet. 😄😄😄😄
KARR got to him. Destroyed his voice module. 😉
Nahh kitt doesn't know the guy and is pretending to be a normal replica kitt and just choosing not to speak ; )
As soon as the guy leaves all the simulated rattle sounds will turn off .. his true muscle engine sound will be unsilenced and the turbine sound will also be unsilenced... he's in undercover mode.. lol
Was that a DeLorean in front of the kit car in the beginning?
Yes
it's s civic
Sure was! Notice the license plate said fluxin? A clear & obvious Back to the Future reference.
it's the ls DeLorean
XenomorphLV426 love the screen name. That's my favorite movies of all time. I still watch them on a regular basis & just finally bought the PS4 game the other day
“I just gotta fix it” “I just gotta get it hooked up”
I watched numerous episodes of Knight Rider over the years and always noticed that David Hasselhoff's seat was all the way back. He is a very tall man. After watching this it makes me wonder how he was able to drive this car for the show at all.
He's 6'3 so he put the seat back.
this guy needs to make it drive itself
I just think he needs a super tight steering rack
do you know how hard it is to drive with only 360 degrees? especially when he probably dosn't daily this car so he wont get used to it
+o Lemurs Big fat Power Steering Pump
Kevin Ponce i mean you get no accuracy while turning, you will turn your wheels farther than you want
+o Lemurs I'd still say it would be the best set up for the wheel. As he said the wheel is like the size of a bus and he isn't gonna be racing and stuff with it so a tight steering rack (maybe one turn to lock on each side) and a power steering pump to compensate would work
I love you KITT. Exactly same as the original. I have always love KITT n knight rider. 😀
Meanwhile in another dimension "driving a car with a steering wheel for the first time"
I like how that guy is just holding a fuse in his hand the whole time, pretty much sums up this project.
The whole dash is disconnected, Speedo and ect does not work.
Good to meet you KITT, I'm Michael Knight.
First order of business: We go to the store and get a normal steering wheel.
hook the turbo boost button up to some nitrous
bro
what about super pursuit mode?
+FordBoy 332 That will engage the nitro methane gas
Matt Bryant I was actually planning 2 do that with my KITT, but i decided to do it for pursuit mode, just to make it better
I'd watched "Knight Rider"and"A Team"in my youth in Japan.
Thx for great video!
This car needs "Active steering" with variable gear ratio!
i like all knight rider stuff ( old one from 82-84, team from 90s , from 2009, and i look forward to the new one
Next, fly Airwolf
You mean a Bell Ranger with plastic bits stuck on it? :D
Airwolf wasn't a Jet Ranger, it was a Bell model 222. Sadly the real one was written off in a fatal accident after the show wrapped.

The way Mr Regular's watch sits on his wrist makes me feel exactly like that steering wheel makes me feel.
speedometer doesnt work neither does the 2 moniters or any of the numbers on the dash
That would feel like I was driving with my flappy paddle shifters! The series was great in the eighties when I had no idea how cars drove properly but looking at this..............well! The innocence of youth!
This looks so much more cheesy than it did in the early 1980's.
KITT is NOT CHEESY he is the coolest car on the planet!
He is only mirroring what cars will be like in about 50 years time
I think it's because we only saw the instruments in close-up, with dramatic lighting - in bright daylight it looks really plastic.
I thought the filming location looked kind of familiar. Then you hit Rt 61 and I realized where you were. I grew up in the Skook, left in 92, but you never forget! Video showed up in my UA-cam recommended videos.
Legend say some people still want to look car from outside
Is it just me or does this car has an insane amount of steer-slop??! All i know/remember from a docu about the Knight Rider, was that the car was anything but impressive performance wise. I still like what they did here, it looks like you step back into the era..amazing build

Non of that stuff is that expensive except for the nitrous.
There needs to be a movie car meetup. Like cars and coffee but for movie cars. All the DeLorean replicas, KITT replicas, Starsky and Hutch, Bullitt, Smokey and the Bandit. All of em
WHAT CAMERA ARE YOU USING?
I want it.
The amount of steering which you have to do to get the car turn around is absolutely ridiculous.
I am glad that people acknowledged that voice of KITT was also Mr. Feeny.
Did it at least have a working fuel gauge? I can see that the speed and tach are not functioning yet. 3 basic gauges you should get working first are the oil pressure, speedometer (because tickets suck) and a fuel gauge.
it kight rider . who cares. you can just ask the voice
Speedometer can be emulated via a GPS app on a smartphone. Not perfect, but it'll work temporarily. Fuel gauge shouldn't matter if you just make sure to fill it up after every other trip. Oil pressure should be done ASAP though.
I have the Knight Rider app on my phone. It is pretty cool, and I can use the digital speedometer while driving my car!
Amazing car i sat in the real one at universal studios over 20 years ago..
Am I the only one who remembers that God awful Knight Rider remake from 2008 lol?
I think it was 2009 and yes, it was horrible
how about "team knight rider" from the 90s? used to watch that as a kid
I'm with the others. I liked the remake. It would have been better if they could have kept Will Arnett as KITT though. He was the original voice until GM pulled him.
Who doesn't remember those two futuristic motorcycles that formed into one car.
?!
You mean with the mustang THAT TRANSFORMED INTO AN F-150?
Should win an award for the most digital displays and read-outs that do absolutely nothing ! So Hollywood!
That thing needs a MUCH quicker steering rack with a far smaller lock-to-lock steering wheel rotation, just like any open wheeler/DTM car of today. Onlu than it'll be comfortable to drive. Also removing the stalks and using one of those buttons for that might be handy too.
Thirdgen F-bodies use a box. If this is an LU5 car, it came factory with a 12.7:1 box.
@joesfoxbodyandmusclecargarage That's an American for you with more knowledge about US cars. I didn't know that as a European, but yeah, I meant to change the lock to lock and have a faster ratio box in there.
Thanks for the insight!
how many Christmas lights it took to do the dashboard
Just like the Camaro from that era the Firebird was referred to as "rattle box" for good reason.
You need a steering accelerator so you don't have to turn the wheel so much
My inner nerd is on overload watching this. Knight Rider with a Delorean in the background. I cant even
"Its not a driver's car. It's designed for the show.". Reminds me of how terrible the gen 5/6 Transformer Camaros are to drive. Movie prop first, car second.
This is by no means a regular car, but damn I’m glad you made this video
Wow, I didn't even know they made Corvairs convertibles.
How hard would it be to basically install an iPhone with Siri inside there so you can actually talk to it and use voice commands?
I love your car! I can't imagine how hard it is to drive with this steering wheel! Funny how Knight Rider shoe seems so corny watching it today, but I LOVED IT as a kid!
And in front is the DeLorean from Back to the future...
He had trouble with the starter so he hid it.
Are there any of these cars out there that have a significantly reduced steering ratio so the control flopper wouldn't be such a monumental liability in maneuverability?
Is that a Deloren in front at the beginning?
yep
oh really??? i thought it was a lambo
No it's the bat mobile
I sat in that car in the late 1980s when it was on display at universal studios, Hollywood, when I was a little kid lol
"I feel like I'm in Darth Vader's bathroom." Lol
The fact that there is both a delorean and also KITT is like whoa
Over all, good job guys, you took me 30 years back.
Couldn't stop looking at the owners phone on his crotch
didnt even notice until I read your comment lol
+Miamari Ⓥ same
probably cheaper than a vasectomy.
that's what he uses to pleture himself
I did a web search on "pleture" and it came out as latin for "to fill or fulfill".
What!!! I just subbed because of funny videos and this video is shot right next to my childhood home!!!!
I Always watch knite Rider on TV at night.i like it so so much.
thanks for not showing the car at all
VoodooD0g Are you joking?
The title says "driving the knight rider car for the first time".........its a video of him driving the knight rider car for the first time...
This review was a shadowy flight into the dangerous world of driving television props on public roads.
Grand theft auto v Ruiner 2000

Thumbs up if you are here because of 2021 Tesla model S
i can see the joy of the cop pulling you over and see all the sitations he is about to give you
No rev counter, screens don't work, buttons don't do anything, items like the key pad are missing.. This must be the worst KITT replica I've ever seen to be honest.. Come back when you finish it.
HOLY SHIT! The interior kinda looks like the cockpit of a Cessna 172 G1000 Glass Cockpit!
cool to look at otherwise it looks to big a huge piece of shit
"Is there an indicator for when my turn signals are o-"
"No."
😂
Curious. Are the speedometer and the Tachometer connected? I am not seeing any digits on the electronic readouts changing with the speed of the car and the RPMs. I'm thinking it may be dim or too much lighting shining on the dashboard.
The guy that drives sure complains alot.

DeLoreans are my favorite cars and I love KITT so seeing the DeLorean the moment I clicked the video was pretty nice
Thanks for the 1st person POV.
Michael knight made it look so easy for being a tall guy. ... am sure he had figure it out and got the hang of it after so many takes. .
"Confirming that the scanner light is off, we don't want to get in trouble" Not that you won't because of the steering yoke, no rear view mirror-plus, you're not wearing your seat belts.
All it needs is a Super Pursuit Mode
KITT must have been in a bad mood, he didn’t say a word...
Here in Germany we have one rebuild too, but it is forbidden to use the Gullwing Steering driving in official Streets, he must change for driving, only use in Show case.
This would be like if KITT was from Hasselhoff's "Drunken Burger Eating" era
Might be dated and looks a little silly but it's still cool as fuck, for a 'futuristic' interior.
ha. The LS Delorean is there, too. What a day of cars.
It's funny watching you turn a non existing stearing wheel your hands like floating haha
Back when I was a kid " woooooooooow that steering wheel!!!"
Now as a grown up "that steering wheel...wow..."
I'm surprised by the absence of the Knight Rider theme song
You can get the ringtone from the knight rider show I have it on my phone.
I love how when this video came out everyone universally agreed the yoke was a terrible idea but now that tesla has put one in their cars everyone's a huge simp and it's suddenly fine.

Form over function for the purposes of the TV show.
I drove one these cars before where I work. I looks like a spaceship from inside.
Great Scott, KITT and a DeLorean !
I’d make the wheel smaller inwards and put translucent tubes to emulate a full normal wheel ,so it looks like it’s invisible
Right hand on the angle while left hand underneath and vice versa when turning, then you can watch the knees better because your hands are more inside than in the way
