  • Moving to New Zealand from the US? You will LOVE this guest.
Sheri is a nurse from the USA. Early this year she moved to New Zealand with her husband Dan to start a new life. Is it possible, for a couple in their late fifties to leave everything behind, move to the other side of the world and create a new life in New Zealand?
    It certainly is!
In this week's show, I talked with Sheri. Sheri is a member of our private NZ Ahead Community.
If you would like to become a member of that community sign up for our 5-day video guide itsadrama.com/ilovenz/ and we will give you more details!)
Sheri and her husband Dan spent the past thirty years building a comfortable life together for themselves and their family.
And then two of her children moved to New Zealand. So what did Dan and Sheri do? They followed...
    This is her story.

I'm a New Zealander who lived abroad for 23 years and when I came back to NZ, it was like starting from ground zero. I didn't have a network and had to build from scratch. I was lucky to get a job after a month and then went to work on building a network and skills that NZ wants. I have been able to advance, after a few years trying. I feel that most people will be able to prove their worth after coming here and advance their careers. It's about getting a feel for what is valued here. (BTW I'm also over 55.)

Great interview.............Congratulations, Sheri and Dan. I hope NZ turns out to be everything you hoped for. We are 66 and 73 and currently packing our home of 43 years in order to move to NZ to be with our one and only child, grandchild and SIL. Boy, what a process. We are still awaiting to hear from INZ. We applied for the Parent Retirement Resident Visa in May and have yet to hear any word. Very nerve-racking to say the least. We will ship a 20 ft container with our belongings. We have our tickets for Aug 2nd and will travel on a Travel Visa if our Visa doesn't come thru before then. We are fortunate that we will be living in our daughter's home while they sail from US back to NZ so we won't need to find a rental . It will be strange to be in NZ on our own while our family will not be here for 9mths to a Yr while they sail to NZ. Our friends all say we are very brave and courageous to do this at our age and sometimes I say either that or crazy. :)

Has Sheri looked across the harbour at Thames, she can get on the ferry to go across to Auckland to visit her daughters but it's cheaper than living in Auckland.
When I had my children in the North Island, I didn't make any milk, so the hospital gave my two children claustrum from other mothers for the first 4 days, and I bottle fed my children.

Welcome to New Zealand ma'am. Lol...one of the amusing things l find about people who immigrate to New Zealand from the US (and other northern hemisphere regions) as far as assimilating into Kiwi culture, is that some do it a little more seamlessly than others.
I've met 2 Bostonian woman who have been here 20 and 8 years respectively. The former is 'has' 'acclimated' to our summertime Christmases.
The latter...well she still hasn't gotten accustomed to the extended daylight saving warm/hot Christmas hours here.
That's something else your guest will have to 'acclimate' to moving forward, and this past Christmas would definitely have been 'different' in that respect.
    Thanks for sharing ladies.
    Have a nice day.

@@ItsaDrama it's important for me to make others welcome and I believe that just because we were born in one country doesn't mean we don't have a right to live elsewhere if that is what we choose to do. There can be so much negativity in the world so I try to counteract it by looking at the positivity in anything and everything possible. Sheri was such a lovely person and I think it's important that as New Zealanders we understand that people moving here add to our country instead of taking anything away. I'm only new to your channel but I already love it as you and Brian are naturally hilarious together and you both are excellent storytellers. I'm having a tough time at the moment because I lost my Mum to cancer on Boxing Day 2020 and on the 27th of January this year I found Dad had unexpectedly passed away in his sleep. I was lucky to not only have them for parents but they were also my best friends. I've been sick since I was a child but Eleven years ago when I was 32 my life long specialists gave me two years at the most to live which was realistic-considering my extensive health history so we all thought I'd pass away first and here I am still here fighting each day to stay alive and it's channels and people like the two of you who keep me entertained when I have to stay in bed. You distract me when I'm in pain and feeling down and so I want thank you for doing that for me. I hope that all the arrangements and packing for your 6 months trip is going well. I'm so excited to see what you do and comparisons between the different way of live. Xx

They're far from the only ones, it's a problem in a lot of places (including quite a few that don't even have a shortage of existing housing!), as one of the main driving forces is the idea of housing being an 'investement' rather than a 'necessity' driving speculation (which drives the prices up even without the more 'legitimate' causes of such being relevant). It's been described as a bubble for a reason, the problem is that when you combine it with an Actual shortage of housing, the bubble doesn't Pop (and a bubble with so many people's wealth sunk into it poping is bad enough on it's own, economically speaking

It's not as big a move as US to NZ but it just happened so fast I've not really had time to process it all. I don't know if it's from watching this channel but growing up in NZ,I'd never known of Americans moving over to NZ,but is it a thing now? I keep coming across other US channels dedicated to moving to NZ, it gives the impression that a lot of US citizens are moving over there or to the UK,Aus and others,I wonder if there's any figures to back it up?

6 days in USA hospital… I thanked everyone! So to say Americans don’t say thank you is incorrect! B

I watched the whole video... and all I heard was "Puppy..." ... I like puppy, sorry lol
To be fair with the house prices there is a housing crisis ... but, the market is cooling... which is good. But it may be a while before it really cools off.
As for the 50 year old realising that items and things can be replaced and and not who you are... I have very few things that are classed momento, stuff from the navy and my motorcycle experiences... it may take up a box. Everything else meh what ever. (if that makes sense and yes I am in my 50's)
And yes "breast is best...", "every one needs a bosom to for a pillow..." there is a song in that somewhere... oh wait breast feeding... doh! that's a different subject... LOL

🤣 You crazy horse! Lovely to hear from you as always, I wish Bri would clear his shed out and let go of all of his sentimental things...(like old tins of paint and ripped tarpaulins) Then I'd have room to move all my stuff into there..😆 Have a great week!

As a Kiwi who lived in Auckland for 20 years, get out of Auckland. House prices elsewhere is way cheaper than Auckland. And kiwis tend to be more helpful out in the regions. I feel sorry for those that move here and don't have friends. It's hard because my wife and I love making new friends. If you move to Whanganui let me know, we can be friends 👍

My family is also in the process of planning a move. The thing is that most health sector job offers are for the Auckland area. When you are dependent on a job offer to secure a visa, it's not easy to choose outside Auckland. Maybe once settled it gets better...

@@albertopsi75 brother if you're in the health sector then the whole country is yours. We need medical staff everywhere. I understand stand that coming from overseas you need a job offer first. Maybe look at regions you like then ring the hospital there and ask. Or like you said get to Auckland then go from there. Good luck to you Alberto.

About proving your qualifications- I'm no expert by any means, just that nz had some "doctors"- one was a "surgeon", last name Patel- everything about him was fraudulent. No one complained about him- as far as I know, in New Zealand. He ruined my people's bodies through the botch ups he did.
He left nz and did the same in Queensland Australia. He finally was prosecuted there. His "qualifications" were just accepted on face value and I suppose the Australians just accepted him out from New Zealand's "background" check. He wasn't qualified and people died.
I wonder because of these kinds of things, that checks now are so vigorous?
All the best, by the way.
