Is this Grief or Depression (and why does no one warn you?)

We weren't going to release this podcast episode. The original plan was to discuss whether, after losing her mum to cancer six weeks ago, the deep sadness Liz is feeling is normal grief (as one would expect) or a worryingly worsening depression. And while we did discus the above, the route we took was different to what we anticipated. We were ready to scrap the episode and start again. But. We ...

Liz, these videos are some of the most enjoyable to me. Real people telling real stories of real experiences. Interesting to hear about the girls schooling after having to listen to this idiot government we have. Hardcase I wrote this 2 minutes before you talked about having her( sorry I haven't picked up on her name) back on to talk about the education system.

This is ringing a few bells. We came to NZ in 2003, had to come back to the UK in 2011 for a variety of family reasons. We are now planning to return to retire, our children are just finishing up at Uni and they are on board. We are so looking forward to our return, selling all the STUFF that you have and coming with an empty bucket. Planning to arrive, buy a truck and caravan, and as the kids say, the olds are going on tour. Cant wait!

If it is bring a plate people will tell you. If it is a dinner they are inviting you to, generally it is not bring a plate, you are being invited. If you go round to someone's house you always take something, It is considered rude if you don't, it can be anything ,from a loaf of bread, bottle of milk. There can be slight variations on these rules depending on which part of the country you are in. Also when it is time to leave you do not take anything that you bought with you originally with the exception of dishes or cutlery unless the host asks you to. Generally if there is still food left afterwards the host will say something like , " Would you like to take some of this home?'.

Hi Liz, Hi Brian, it’s Mike and Jen here from the Kooteney mountains of British Columbia. First of all, I just want to let you know that we love you lots …. you’re quite a couple. We just came back from a tour through New Zealand, five weeks in the south island three in the north. We actually overnighted at he visitor Center up on Taranaki and went hiking on the mountain the next day. We absolutely love New Zealand. We had a camper van, yes we were one of the camper van people. It was Great!!! I’ve just retired Jen still working I often have my coffee and listen to you on UA-cam. I think the bring food comment is really funny. Here in the Kootenays we call it a potluck and everybody brings something and gets together. There could be 20 people or there could be just two couples. We love it. I do understand the joy of just going out to dinner at a friends place, maybe four of you and have everything made for you. I appreciate that and sometimes when we invite people over we say “no do not bring anything we’re doing it all.” There is no right way or wrong way. It’s just an.”Is”. Just signed up for your five day … keep being you. Love to both of you,Mike.

Hi Jessica, Great question! We have a private (paid for) "moving to New Zealand" community group where people who are all moving/have moved to NZ can chat, make friends and access valuable resources related to their new life down under. The group is hosted on Slack (which is a chat based app) with over twenty different channels related to specific topics within NZ. The community also has access to hundreds of hours of videos and private NZ podcasts made by Brian and I about NZ. People can find out more about this community by taking our free 5 day video guide that we offer. On day 5, you are given details of how to join the community. The group like to call themselves the 'NZ Slackers!' 😂 This is why you will here people refer to "the slack group". Most people we interview on this show are members of this private community. I hope this answers your question! My late son ran a company in Dubai for many yrs, so we saw very little of him. Hi Beverly, agreed! The South is gorgeous 😊 ! it’s true that the majority of new arrivals go to the North. That’s usually because they have been offered jobs there (especially a lot of our healthcare workers). Hope this answers your question! Thanks for watching 😊

One of many stunning natural retreats in New Zealand. Mother Nature can rejuvinate body, mind and soul. Take your shoes off to connect to the Earth and turn your face to the Sun and smile. Best therapy in the World.

Most beautiful places are overcrowded now to be compared with tourists and out of towners going to these so called gems in quiet places. Can't even enjoy some time by ourselves anymore.

Thank you for sharing this place with all of us!. It definitely looks like a beautiful space to spend time relaxing, healing and getting away from the everyday stresses. Have never been to that lake but we did travel the Forgotten Highway in 2013 after driving up from Christchurch to attend the Beach Hop at Whangamata . It was a great drive and we made a lot of detours getting there and along the way back home to spend some time in the great outdoors. Nature is indeed amazing. 😄

Our dearest Liz and Brian, we are so happy that you took time off to enjoy nature. It always provides the energy balance we need. 💕What a beautiful, amazing place you have not far from your home.💕 We are so impressed with how New Zealand keeps its nature perfectly protected and maintained for everyone to enjoy. 👌👍We can not wait to visit this beautiful country. I hope you recharged, had time to reflect, and healed. You both are an amazing couple. 💕We are so happy to see you laughing and joking. Love this energy. Enjoy every minute there. Lots of love to both of you💖💖

I'm sorry to say I don't watch your channel religiously, but somehow the videos I do catch from you guys always resonate so much, and seemingly at the right time. I'm so glad you put in to words the feeling that I know i've been missing. That sense of calm and grounding that I've often felt at home in NZ, and like you say, especially at times of grief, I've been there and a quiet walk on an almost empty beach is so healing, i'm sorry about the loss of your mum. Throughout my time in NZ I've lived in Asia, the US, and now the UK, and travelled a lot. I know the UK (I'm in Cambridge) is a great place, full of charm, history, and activity, but I've been searching for that feeling of calm, connectedness with nature, and being able to disconnect from the outside world and recharge. I'm not spiritual in anyway but talking about NZ with my British husband whose lived in NZ for 14 years, I feel so connected to NZ, the land, as if it runs through my veins. And I always felt so grounded after spending time outdoors somewhere, no other people, hearing only nature. It's something I haven't found elsewhere. I also love that you don't have to pay at the entrance of that reserve, it doesn't matter if we pay through taxes but the idea that your time in that space is not made transactional at the time - you feel welcome and like you are meant to be there. I always agree and laugh it off when i'm talking with English people and they say NZ is nice but they could never live there, that there's nothing there. Oh, but NZ has so much, for everything NZ doesn't have I would take what it does. <3

What a beautiful message, B. Thank you so very much for stopping by and for sharing your thoughts. I feel the same...as you say, there are many lovely places (I love Devon and Cornwall) that are equally lovely, but they just don't (or didn't for me) have the same grounding FEEL. The connection. Thank you, I am so very appreciative of you taking the time to share, especially since the majority of our family live in England and we are always wondering if we'd feel the same connection and calm over there as we do here. Sending heaps of love and happiness to the UK, 🇬🇧❤️ with love, Liz (and Brian) xx

Liz, when I lost my Momma several years ago, there were so many times that I wanted to call her and tell her something, only to remember she was gone. I had all that stuff inside me that I had to tell her, so I bought a journal. I call it "Letters to Mom." And I would just make entries like I was talking directly to her. I know this is probably not for everyone, but as a writer, it really helped me. I just thought it might work for you, too. So sorry you are going thru this. I wrote in it almost every day at first and it has dwindled over the years, but I still write in it from time to time. It's not easy and my Momma has been gone for 18 years.

Dear Claudia, Thank you so very much for this beautiful message. I hope you don't mind but I read your suggestion of a 'Letters to Mom' out on our latest podcast, (released on YT on Sunday) I needed others to hear your wonderful idea. Thank you again for your kindness, you really are wonderful. Thank you ❤️ Liz x
