So I was recently editing the audio for a video of a singer and had the crackling and popping sound and it seemed to be caused by the pop up video window, I say this because when I "X-ed" it out, the problem went away... Which was great, but I couldn't see the lip sync as I was editing, which wasn't really necessary in this case, but I could see it being problematic in a different scenario... Anyway, I made some adjustments in how my CPU was doing the processing, which seemed to help, but it was still doing some popping and cracking... I stumbled across this video and after making the adjustment that you suggested, the problem is completely gone! Thank you so much for making this!
Wow! I've been dealing with this problem for 2 years, especially when using cpu intensive plugins like IK Tape Machines and this fixed it so easily. You're the best.🙂
Wow this worked great. I had mine set at 256 for recording but never was an issue with the 96 usb interface on playback. Just upgraded to the 1818 and I couldn’t even listen back because it popped so bad. I put it up to 2048 samples for mixing and no pops at all. Thank you much.
I have studio One five I have recorded with no snap crackle pop issues but now I am having snap crackle pop issues and the problem with the software that I have is when I first set it up it showed the USB audio box 96 from presonus on there now the recording playback device is Windows Media it doesn't give me another choice for anything else I don't know what's going on. Do you think that you can help me with this please thank you
Another thing to watch out for are master bus plugins that add latency. I'd been away from my DAW for a while and returned to work on a "finished" project with many VI's and master bus processing. My latency settings were all on point but my instruments had latency and newly tracked guitars were slightly off time. I was puzzled. Then I realized plugins on my master were adding latency. When I turned those off for tracking everything was perfect. Turned them on again when tracking was done.

This usually works 95% of the time. However, there is something else going on in your situation. It's impossible for me to troubleshoot an issues when there are so many different computer configurations out there today. It could be an application or 3rd party plugin installed on your machine as well. if you open a brand new session, dont install a single plugin. Just import a couple of tracks of audio and play it back. Are you still have these issues?
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy Yeah with just the one track. To be fair I haven't tried multiple variations of lead, port, platform as yet. Never had an issue with Logic and USB 2 or Cubase and windows 10. Isnt the Processing tab related to the mixing and the audio tab to the input only unless you put it on the two highest settings then the processing tab will be bypassed. Keeping the buffer at recording sizes and processing at whatever works is the recommended approach from Presonus. I have 16 and maximum for large sessions and are very careful not to have rec enable or monitoring on anywhere.

I had horrid latency with an analog mixer. It was low end and consumer level. Once I bought an interface, the difference was night and day. While not an Apollo, monitoring became tolerable. Cracks, hums, pops, etc. is all in the good leads.

On Windows 10, I had to use Universal Control to change the buffer size, and that fixed it, thanks to you explaining the root of the problem. Thanks for the help!
i pplied it to my settings but still having a little latency using mixcraft 7 my pc runs on third gen I7 core, scarlet 3rd gen audio interface, yamaha keyboard connected to my audio interface as audio not as MIDI device . i tried to record some plays of fine while listening to a rythem i made in mixcraft .. but really couldn't figure how to solve it.. i appriciate your value advice. thanks.
I know there is a reason for everything, but it drives me crazy when for no apparent reason and without having made any changes, experiencing sudden latency (crackling) noises after opening a song and during playback.
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy Thanks. I did some research. It's the SINE player that comes with my Berlin Strings . At the end of the day, even a 2 TB drive with high RAM needs to be a SSD drive and ideally, a special type SSD rated for music / studio production work. Orchestral Tools does not mention this anywhere and software is not refundable. You may want to mention this to others in the same boat.
I never had to play with block sizes before until recently, when I bought Gerg Well's plugins. I am using Windows 10, i7 (8th gen) and 16GB RAM. never had any issues with latency. But right after I inserted the MixCentric on the master bus while mixing, I started to hear crackles like vinyls. I will try to reset the blocks. Also I have seen few people commented that after they changed the block sizes, they lost their audios. Do you know anything about that?
I think the problem I'm facing is I'm using plug-ins and I need to hear a near finished mix sound to get an idea if the track will sound good and if I need to re-record again. Can't get an idea how the song idea comes across at the low settings with the latency.
You may want to consider something like the Universal Audio Apollo with uni-sen technology. That will allow you to record with all the plugins you want with no latency, crackles, pops etc.
Hi, I am using the Presonus Audiobox 96 with Studio One Artist 5. When I plug in my guitar directly into the audiobox i can hear my clean guitar however, when I drag Ampire over to the channel under inserts, I can hear the distorted amp AND my clean sound. What am I doing wrong?
I have no idea. I am really not sure. I recommend that you go to the Presonus user forum and post your question there. I am sure someone there can help. Thanks!
big help, thanks much. Your solution was the one of many I've looked at that finally fixed my static problem on a heavily-edited guitar track. One follow-up question: each time I change the device block size, it holds for both record and playback of that song and also for any new song I start, so I will try to find a setting (I'm using Studio One Pro v. 4) that works all the time for both recording and playback. Or would you recommend changing it back and forth for each situation for CPU performance issues for example?
Yes but what's a happy medium? For example 95% of my music is electric guitar and my vocals, I want a super low latency for recording but like to check what it sounds like after takes, are you saying I have to keep switching it every time? That would add a huge amount of extra time to my project times, to be fair I only really notice the pops and crackles when using midi, it seems to be fine when it's just my guitar and vocal, how low a latency is acceptable for guitar? Maybe I can fine tune it and find a happy medium, right now my latency for guitar is 1.5ms and that's fantastic recording wise
Thank you so much for watching! I really appreciate your support! Be sure to check out my website for even more training. www.homerecordingmadeeasy.com
THANKS. these issues appeared as I added tracks. Will my masterpiece be destroyed if i have the file saved as a song in Studio One 5, and I reinstall on a quad core 16 gig computer?
Fantastic explanation! I watched other videos on the topic (too complex or just skipping some essential steps) and tried to figure this out myself for many hours, but this video motivated me again. Thanks and I’ll subscribe…curious to see more!
sir please help me to set my Samson Graphite 49 completely with studio one 3 DAW. so that I can use the MIDI Keyboard without latency problem and use all the keys and controls of Graphite 49
Are your vocal recording videos still relevant? What plugins should I buy for vocals and brass recording? I'm just using the base studio one with no plugins on Windows.
Thanks for the great video! I have a question, though. I have a Presonus Audiobox 1818vsl and I cannot change the block size settings in Studio One 5 Artist. So I keep having 2048 samples and high latency which makes the performance impossible while recording. Is it something that I did wrong in the settings or is there something else I could do to fix this problem? thanks in advance and thanks for your great videos!!
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy thanks for your quick response! I have actually fixed it by changing the settings in Virtual Studio Live. Somehow, I can change the settings only there and automatically changes Studio One, but not the other way around. Thanks again!
Thank you for the tips! I got noise issue but not sure is it about my laptop or the audio interface. Would any one give me some advice if possible? I am using Positive Grid Spark Mini Amp as my interface to record my guitar play. The connection to the laptop is an USB cable. However, no matter how do I play around the buffer size(and sample rate) I still got a noise during my play. My laptop is a 2015 Mac Air with 1.6G dual core i5 and 8G RAM.
I recorded vocals with plug ins and can hear pops and clicks. Does that mean the block size has to be higher ?? Sence I’m recording with the plug ins ?
@HomeRecordingMadeEasy so the issue was that I had a ground light connected and the cable was next to the xlr cable. I would have never thought by having the xlr cable next to the lamp cable would make the weird sound come out. Everytime I move the xlr cable next tot he lamp cable I can hear the ssss sound or the whistle sound and when I removed it away from the lamp it will stop
There's no drop down menu to change block size in my audio setup. It just says "480 samples." After that, I opened up universal control and could change the block size in there, but don't hear any latency changes. Please Need help
I even unchecked "Exclusive mode" box under Control Panel - set latency to 10(lowest) - Dropout protection to Maximum, check marked "enable low latency monitoring for instr" and have both green "z's" showing. I don't know what the problem could be, any help appreciated
As a singer-songwriter tech stuff is not my highest suite of skills it just seems to use a different part of my brain that kind of stops creativity, that's is the reason I use Studio one, its up and running really quickly. I have an issue where I record from my motu m2 into my MacBook Pro 14 (16gb ram M1 Pro processor). It has a static that randomly appears mostly during recording into the daw and it prints onto the wav file I’ve tried everything. Any help?
Without seeing the setup, I have no idea. The quickest thing to do is try a different interface and see if that solves the issue. Try a different USB pot on your computer as well.
I have a couple of very unpleasant problems with my presonus studio 24c, all the sounds at low volume are not reproduced, it also happens to me that when I play music or any type of sounds with win 10 an involuntary fade occurs and it does not allow me to appreciate the attack initial tracks, it is so unpleasant and annoying, now I wanted to start a session from scratch with reaper and it turns out that I cannot hear the metronome: /, if I import a track or use a vst that is solved, it seems that some sounds are being omitted but I see that the interface panel does give me a signal, please help !!!

im just having a hard time with playback..everything sounds great through my headphones but when i play it back through my pc speakers the volume is lower on my voice than the music..the music is louder than my voice and what plays back doesn't sound as good as it does in the headphones...i am not sure what to do about this, or how to really set up the volume levels.
Sounds like you need some basic training on recording. Which DAW are you using? If you are using Studio One go here www.homerecordingmadeeasy.com/presonus-studio-one-training
David, I also have a Series 3 32 channel audio interface with my StudioOne Pro 3.5 DAW,.......but none of those boxes you showed under the Audio Setup\Audio Device are selectable or changeable. They show numbers and status but can't select or change any of them, including the Device Block Size.I wish I could because I often have cracks & pops, but I also have a quad core 16GB RAM Windows computer.
HI Doug.....you must be using a PC correct? Windows are different than Mac's andI mention that in the video. I am not sure what to do in Windows to ix the issue without seeing your set-up first hand.
Home Recording Made Easy Yes, Windows 8.1. Everything in your video looked the same for me in Windows, but those setting aren't adjustable...I click on a value and nothing happens, doesn't allow changes. Huh? Hi! Presonus just ignored me so maybe you will be able to help me. I'm just testing studio one prime version and I have created 2 tracks using wav loops and I have noticed when I clicked play and loop start playing i heard small tiny click at the beginning of that loop so every time the loop was at the start i heard that click.so first i have tried to change fade in ( reduced slightly the volume) but no joy, i have changed the block size the same. I have two years old macbook pro so should be OK. The same samples in reaper and ableton are sounds normal. No issue there. Strange i was so close to buy studio one 5 but I don't think I can.
my case is a little different. I started noticing Hugh pops on 2048 but its ok on 1024.but it was working just fine on 2048. what should i do ? any suggestions?

I have 16 and maximum for large sessions and are very careful not to have rec enable or monitoring on anywhere.

Me and my wife love your straight forward information!!!
Thank you so much!
I had horrid latency with an analog mixer. It was low end and consumer level. Once I bought an interface, the difference was night and day. While not an Apollo, monitoring became tolerable. Cracks, hums, pops, etc. is all in the good leads.

this video was really helpful, but my device block size doesn't have a drop down menu. so it won't let me change it
if you on a PC, go to the universal control app and change it there.
So far so good thanks
Thanks for watching!
On Windows 10, I had to use Universal Control to change the buffer size, and that fixed it, thanks to you explaining the root of the problem. Thanks for the help!

@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy thanks for replying to me.
I know there is a reason for everything, but it drives me crazy when for no apparent reason and without having made any changes, experiencing sudden latency (crackling) noises after opening a song and during playback.
Could be a computer issue. Its more than likely not the software itself
The low buffer apply to to virtual instruments too? What about the processing tab have anything to improve the performance?
yes it applies to VST's as well. I mention that in the video
you, my friend, are awesome. Thank you! From a total DAW noob.
Thanks Mike. I appreciate your support!

Thanks for watching

Yes but what's a happy medium? For example 95% of my music is electric guitar and my vocals, I want a super low latency for recording but like to check what it sounds like after takes, are you saying I have to keep switching it every time? That would add a huge amount of extra time to my project times, to be fair I only really notice the pops and crackles when using midi, it seems to be fine when it's just my guitar and vocal, how low a latency is acceptable for guitar? Maybe I can fine tune it and find a happy medium, right now my latency for guitar is 1.5ms and that's fantastic recording wise

Are your vocal recording videos still relevant? What plugins should I buy for vocals and brass recording? I'm just using the base studio one with no plugins on Windows.
yes, the videos are still relevant. I use this same process today

Tried different cable, USB ports, and different playback settings. Do not help😂

I recorded vocals with plug ins and can hear pops and clicks. Does that mean the block size has to be higher ?? Sence I’m recording with the plug ins ?
you can try that but if you are trying to record through plugins and still having issues, my guess is that you have an under spec computer.
I was getting distorted, clicks and pops when i use fx plugins for each channel
If i disable fx which i have added then the audio is clear

There's no drop down menu to change block size in my audio setup. It just says "480 samples."
After that, I opened up universal control and could change the block size in there, but don't hear any latency changes. Please Need help
I even unchecked "Exclusive mode" box under Control Panel - set latency to 10(lowest) - Dropout protection to Maximum, check marked "enable low latency monitoring for instr" and have both green "z's" showing.

As a singer-songwriter tech stuff is not my highest suite of skills it just seems to use a different part of my brain that kind of stops creativity, that's is the reason I use Studio one, its up and running really quickly. Imagine my horror when it started making these awful clicks and pops when I was mixing, well this fixed it Brilliant. You, sir, are a genius. Much thanks from The Mysterys HQ.
Ahhh..thank you for the kind words

Huh? I wouldn't think I shouldn't be able to make those adjustments just because I'm on Windows. I'll have to wipe the dust off the users manual and dig into it.
Thanks, David for ALL that you do.
How do you do it for Windows?? It won't let me change my device block size, it doesn't have the drop down option.
Its in the universal control app. If you are new to Studio One then you may consider this training for beginners. www.homerecordingmadeeasy.com/presonus-studio-one-training

I am facing this problem after freshly installing a new windows.Only God knows what is the solution now.
I have a 16 core Ryzen CPU with 16gb of memory and this software needs me to do what just to play without glitches? I got this in a free bundle and i feel im now just gonna purchase FL Studio..
more over im trying to use studio one 3 on a recent custom desktop. Or maybe i should just get a mac cause windows sucks
I tell all my students, that if you have a choice, go with a Mac. You will have way less issues.
Do you have a video for Windows ?
I am not a Windows user, sorry
I believe you have it backwards. You want to set your block size as LOW as you can to avoid input latency.
When recording - low block size
When mixing. - higher block size
I just got studio one 5, I use a Mac laptop, I’ve tried everything but I’m having trouble connecting my mic to it; I’m using an usb mic. Whenever I try to use it, it doesn’t say my mic is available to use so I can’t record or even hear it through my headphones. Do I need to buy an audio interface? I’m really stressing about this
yes, you need an audio interface
my daw has no settings like this.... i cant even change the asio latency of the studiolive 1602
no setting at all? i assume you are using Studio One? Are you on a PC?
im sorry, i found it, my problem was in the universal control, totally forgot about how it could manage settings there, i use FL and it had no options of changing latency.
