I think also the Galaxy S8 offers a lot of value (even more than the 5T) 6 months after launch for around 500€ or even less (Black Friday). That being said I don't get why people hype up the price so much.
Is it me? Or am I noticing that wireless charging is only important among reviewers. To me and a lot of my friends, wireless charging does not matter ( I think that wireless charging isn't that hip, personally speaking). Thus, I wouldn't consider the lack of wireless charging a bad thing.

I've been searching the OP forums looking for someone's post on it, but really haven't. Hopefully this gets back to the company, because it's driving me crazy. And the people have been asking for front facing speakers since the OnePlus One (the last time I was really active on the forums, since i signed up the moment I saw their post on Twitter). So why no FF speakers, and why 2 camera sensors when one amazing sensor would probably end up costing less than the duo!? Ugh! Awesome review though. What a solid piece.

I agree they came from the same platform, but the OPO had a totally different camera accent and it brought that sharkskin/sandpaper back material as well. To me it always stood apart from the Find 7.

No it's true. I heard of it when I had already purchased the 5t. It make me think about canceling the order. But apparently they say they will stop that ( it's hard to believe). But the one plus one is such a great phone, I use it since almost 3.5 years and I only change because my battery don't even last the day anymore and the third party battery are crap. So I can't resist. + Google steal user data on every Android phone anyway. And litteraly every smartphone in the planet must be infested by aps who are stealing data. So...

Finally figured out what makes Mr. Mobile stand out from other tech reviewers. Every Mr. Mobile review ends with a well rounded and thorough verdict, a moral, a storyline. So many other reviewers simply describe the specs in new words and say "that's the review. Let us know your thoughts". Other reviews lack the punch at the end. Mr. Mobile on the other hand reviews like he is speaking to a prospective customer and not just a viewer. Keep up the great work! :)
Michael been with OnePlus from beginning and I really like them.This is when they had their invite marketing.And when I purchased it the phone was for a Gift.So I have a soft spot for OnePlus from beginning. I bought it for someone who was not tech savvy and I thought it would be nice gift and I would not get too many questions on how to use it,fix it etc.Although that did not help lol. I really appreciate your review and see some of my great Reviewer's I like to watch so enjoyed very much. Got my G6 right after release and have yet to be left wanting for anything more. Still as fast as the day I bought it and easily all day battery. Plus the build quality is excellent and the Cameras, especially with the Pixel apk. just amazing! If you can score a good deal on one, which isn't hard, I think you'll be happy! Oh, and excellent review as always Mr. Mobile!
momonyak Agreed, they are all terrific. I highly suggest giving Erica Griffin, Nick Offerman, J Williams, MrWhosTheBoss, and EverythingApplePro a try as well, they are all excellent. Flossy Carter and Total Tech are good as well, but more entertaining and less about specs/testing.
Last year OP devices didn't cost same money as Samsung and LG flagships. This year LG G6 cost 100$ less that OP5T, Samsung S8 cost exact same money as OP5T 128GB. So now, OnePlus put much higher prices without too much change to their devices compare to last year ones. OP3T is still the best device they made.
Fanatic 18 the portrait mode could be improved significantly with software, everything else however could only be improved very slightly if at all, and all that depends on whether one plus wants to focus on it.
I assume it will be. The OP5's camera was improved tremendpously with updates. Specially the EIS for 4K, it's almost Pixel level stabilization. It's just sooo smooth !
@3:10 Portrait mode is software based in the 5T. The second camera is now used for better low light performance not for the portrait mode like on the 5. That's what makes the 5T superior over the 5, technically.
The price is the phone's biggest fault. I don't understand why OnePlus has incrementally raised the price of their offerings. It defeats the idea of a "flagship killer", or making a point of how flagships can be had for cheaper. The specs are fine, but don't exist in a vacuum. Nowadays, only $150, even less if you're smart shopper, separates the 5T from the other flagships, which is far less than the $200 and more it used to. If OnePlus doesn't want to match the competition with most specs (and in some regards beat them) the way ZTE did with the Axon 7 compared to the Galaxy S7, LG G5 and HTC 10, but rather follow a "just the basics route", then they should keep the price low. $500 is 5 Benjamins, which is still quite some change upfront for the average consumer.
Dark Rush I understand your basic point, but keep in mind that prices are relative. I would label the OnePlus a mid-tier-priced phone with flagship internals. It's more than good enough for the average user, and its price is still very appealing for those who want a great, fast phone at a *reasonable* price -- as opposed to spending $800-1,000+ for the latest Samsung, LG, Google or Apple offerings. For those who want/need unique design, QHD screens, the very best cameras, all the latest hardware goodies (e.g., water resistance, wireless charging), or are simply "brand-whores" and willing to spend the money, it's hard to "kill" their desire for the premium-priced flagships. Simply put, IMO the days of finding a flagship-level phone -- flagship-killer or otherwise -- under $400 are, unfortunately, over.
I think everyone would hope for a lower price but for 500, the op5 is still the best value, so why would they make.it cheaper if they don't have to because there is not other phone for 500 that can compete?
You are the only reviewer out there that addressed the problems with the OP 5T. I really don't get why other don't address those issues, they got me into buying a 3T, then a 5. Never buying a OnePlus again, they don't even come close to real flagships on a prolonged usage and at that price they are not worth it.
so, google releases TWO phones with slight different options at the same time, Samdung does the SAME and crArpple releases THREE different phones ALL different options, one+ releases 2 phones months apart and EVERY BODY craps on them.......hmm ok
I will explain that to you. I own an OnePlus 3 and although the phone is fast, it's full of bugs and little issues. The software sucks, updates break more things than they solve, the support is dung, and the list goes on and on. Random battery drains, camera that does not focus and you've to open a RMA...

s8 is $500 now. And one plus is adding up $20 in each iteration. These do add up. For $500 s8 is a far greater option than a 1080p screen from the museum
S8 is 0$ today (black Friday). for 2-3 years plan in US and Canada. So if you buy OP5T - you gonna pay 500$ + 2-3 years plan cost, because you still need carrier to use mobile network.
But not all of us are fortunate enough not see the difference between 401ppi and 576 ppi. And I don't have to deal with junk for camera without OIS.... :)
Well, the 5T's software is still better, it doesn't drop calls for no reason, and the camera doesn't require you to sideload an app to make it usable. So there's that.

Hopefully Essential keeps updating it to fix the software issues! It's still too tempting for me...I view the OnePlus as a more boring but safe option. Risks can be fun :)
Nah, the phone has a reception issue baked in hardware due to its build. Go over to r/Essential and you will find no shortage of reports about weaker signal than even things like a Moto G5 Plus - which is embarrassing to be sure. The only thing to hope for is Gen 2 to be well improved.
I remember thinking that the OG OnePlus One looked a lot like Oppo's flagship at the time, the Find 7. The OP2's design however was waaaay out there. Following that Oneplus is more or less following market trends...

My 5T arrived yesterday (actually drove 20 km to the post shop after work cause I couldn’t wait another day) and I‘m super happy with it! I was a bit worried about the diamond pentile matrix since I‘m sensitive to it (hated it on my Tab S 8.4 and Note 3 back then) but thankfully it‘s far less noticeable on the 5T. It‘s incredibly snappy, even when you’re used to an iPhone. Just waiting for my dbrand skins as I hate cases.

You and I must have different Note 8s then, because that iris scanner crawls compared to the 5T face unlock. Benefit to the Note 8 is, of course, that it works in the dark.
I don't see why so many people don't like rear mounted sensors. I used Moto phones for so long that that spot is just the perfect resting spot for my index finger.
Good review Michael! Just one thing: OnePlus actually never was that unique. You gave the example of the OnePlus One, but if you compare it to the Oppo Find 7, a phone from 2014 that showed us a different market strategy from Oppo, you'll see they're not that different :)
Although OnePlus 5 may not have all the features of higher end phones such as water proof or a unique design, this company is not about creating something innovative(yet) but rather providing a great product at a lower price compared to other phones. This is what makes OnePlus unique! If OnePlus was able to create new hardware that is different from other phones, expect the company to charge more. If the company starts charging more, than it might create 2 lines, a low end and a top end. Then the company will be similar to the other phone companies such as Samsung, Huawei, etc. This is the reason why OnePlus is one of the best phones...for the price. It may not offer everything the other high end companies can, but it can get close for a low price. If OnePlus did have all the features, than expect the phone to cost $600+. I believe OnePlus is trying to stay around $500s. Huawei use to create mid-range phones that were good, but now they have decided to step up their game and create high end phones to compete with Apple and Samsung.

This is still my favorite OnePlus phone to date all because of that screen. Taller aspect ratio, flat edges, no notch or hole punch.

Yeah I agree, at the end of the day it's still plugged in so what are you gaining that's worth £200 plus
wireless charging is still garbage to me unless you can charge within a vicinity of the charger instead of having to stick it together

I think it is faster than all among phones in the market including iphone X . And it is very affordable compare to other phones in the market.

The biggest downfall on the One Plus is the lack of compatibility with 2 major US carriers. This point is always left out.

I would label the OnePlus a mid-tier-priced phone with flagship internals. It's more than good enough for the average user, and its price is still very appealing for those who want a great, fast phone at a *reasonable* price -- as opposed to spending $800-1,000+ for the latest Samsung, LG, Google or Apple offerings.
For those who want/need unique design, QHD screens, the very best cameras, all the latest hardware goodies (e.g., water resistance, wireless charging), or are simply "brand-whores" and willing to spend the money, it's hard to "kill" their desire for the premium-priced flagships.
Simply put, IMO the days of finding a flagship-level phone -- flagship-killer or otherwise -- under $400 are, unfortunately, over.

I think everyone would hope for a lower price but for 500, the op5 is still the best value, so why would they make.it cheaper if they don't have to because there is not other phone for 500 that can compete?

You are the only reviewer out there that addressed the problems with the OP 5T. I really don't get why other don't address those issues, they got me into buying a 3T, then a 5. Never buying a OnePlus again, they don't even come close to real flagships on a prolonged usage and at that price they are not worth it.

I own an OnePlus 3 and although the phone is fast, it's full of bugs and little issues. The software sucks, updates break more things than they solve, the support is dung, and the list goes on and on. Random battery drains, camera that does not focus and you've to open a RMA...

s8 is $500 now. And one plus is adding up $20 in each iteration. These do add up. For $500 s8 is a far greater option than a 1080p screen from the museum
S8 is 0$ today (black Friday). for 2-3 years plan in US and Canada.
So if you buy OP5T - you gonna pay 500$ + 2-3 years plan cost, because you still need carrier to use mobile network.
s8 has smaller screen and less battery life. Also I dont even notice the difference beetween the s8 and oneplus 5t screen quality.
But not all of us are fortunate enough not see the difference between 401ppi and 576 ppi.
And I don't have to deal with junk for camera without OIS.... :)
Sergey Faynitskiy s8 is a far better option. Better design, better screen and superior camera...:)

Well, the 5T's software is still better, it doesn't drop calls for no reason, and the camera doesn't require you to sideload an app to make it usable. So there's that.

Hopefully Essential keeps updating it to fix the software issues! It's still too tempting for me...I view the OnePlus as a more boring but safe option. Risks can be fun :)
Nah, the phone has a reception issue baked in hardware due to its build. Go over to r/Essential and you will find no shortage of reports about weaker signal than even things like a Moto G5 Plus - which is embarrassing to be sure. The only thing to hope for is Gen 2 to be well improved.
I remember thinking that the OG OnePlus One looked a lot like Oppo's flagship at the time, the Find 7. The OP2's design however was waaaay out there. Following that Oneplus is more or less following market trends...

Listen LG's UI on G6 is complete abysmal. The only race it wins off 5T is camera setup with it offering wide angle.

My 5T arrived yesterday (actually drove 20 km to the post shop after work cause I couldn’t wait another day) and I‘m super happy with it! I was a bit worried about the diamond pentile matrix since I‘m sensitive to it (hated it on my Tab S 8.4 and Note 3 back then) but thankfully it‘s far less noticeable on the 5T. It‘s incredibly snappy, even when you’re used to an iPhone. Just waiting for my dbrand skins as I hate cases.

You and I must have different Note 8s then, because that iris scanner crawls compared to the 5T face unlock. Benefit to the Note 8 is, of course, that it works in the dark.

I don't see why so many people don't like rear mounted sensors. I used Moto phones for so long that that spot is just the perfect resting spot for my index finger.

Good review Michael! Just one thing: OnePlus actually never was that unique. You gave the example of the OnePlus One, but if you compare it to the Oppo Find 7, a phone from 2014 that showed us a different market strategy from Oppo, you'll see they're not that different :)

Although OnePlus 5 may not have all the features of higher end phones such as water proof or a unique design, this company is not about creating something innovative(yet) but rather providing a great product at a lower price compared to other phones. This is what makes OnePlus unique! If OnePlus was able to create new hardware that is different from other phones, expect the company to charge more. If the company starts charging more, than it might create 2 lines, a low end and a top end. Then the company will be similar to the other phone companies such as Samsung, Huawei, etc. This is the reason why OnePlus is one of the best phones...for the price. It may not offer everything the other high end companies can, but it can get close for a low price. If OnePlus did have all the features, than expect the phone to cost $600+. I believe OnePlus is trying to stay around $500s. Huawei use to create mid-range phones that were good, but now they have decided to step up their game and create high end phones to compete with Apple and Samsung.
