Just found your channel Paul. You have to be the best teacher I’ve ever seen. This is actually an art, especially working with a camera so everyone your teaching can see what you’re doing. Unreal and a huge huge help. Thank you thank you.
I recently decided I wanted to extend the height of my fence posts. When I looked on-line I was shocked to see the prices of wood. I knew the prices had gone up, but.....WOW!! So I decided to do what you just demonstrated. Now I know exactly how to get it done using the posts I have left over from another project. And I'd love to see a video on how you capped off the posts. Thank you for another excellent video, Paul! And again, I'm glad to see you back and well!
I really like your video’s. You explain things very well. Never learned to diy from my father unfortunately, so these videos help a lot. This one in particular will help me fix and heighten my crappy fence. Thank you.
Glad to see you back in action brother. Well wishes to you and your family. would still love to see the crown mitre cuts for intersecting vaulted ceiling. Be well Paul.
Thank u for showing us how to increase the elevation of the post. What do u do to add on to the actual fence boards though? I have a 5’ fence and want to convert it to 7’
Good to see you Mr. Paul. Always love your videos. This was great timing too as I am about to replace some old/warped wood fence. Much appreciate as always!
The only problem with mitering the runners is they shrink over time, so your joints will separate. If you glue them with exterior wood glue they may hold up but it would take time. It would definitely look better though. Thanks!
I did the same thing with the pocket holes when I needed to extend the post. Except I used a mending plate between the two post sections and hammered it all the way in.. Seemed pretty solid. Wasn't the ideal method but it worked out for the situation. Still going strong
Good video. I have a 12x20 foot deck that has a 4 ft rail with 4x4 posts that go from ground to 4ft above the deck where the railing is. I want to add a porch covering over this deck. Is it possible to attach 4 foot cut lengths of 4x4 to the front 4x4 posts and make them strong enough to support the roofing lumber ?
Hi Paul, I’m new to your channel. Thank you very much for teaching us the tricks. How can I raise my wood fence for privacy against nosey neighbors. Can I add faux panel to extend the height?
Hey paul, my 15-year-old cedar fence's posts in concrete are finally starting to rot and lean. I have about 80 posts on the fence enclosing my backyard, only several are wobbly so far, but I fear a nightmarish task looming. What do you suggest? The fence panels themselves of course are still in fine shapes since they are above ground.
Question. What did you attach the top plate to??? I don't see anything that is structurally sound enough to screw that top plate into. I have the same issue with my fence. I'm thinking maybe another 2x4 between the top of the boards, screw it all together and then add top plate??? Please advise
Can you show how to cap those post… I wanna add that to my fence… also I have a question about applying epoxy to a live edge cedar slab. Do you have a video on that
Morning Paul. You did a amazing job, I learned from you to improved myself how to raising fence height. I was thinking to extended 10FT but I worried it might collapsed, what should I do if that happens?
Could this be done with cedar 8' length 6"X 6" over 3' length 6"X 6" green treated wood? For gazebo post Edit: I have four 8' when I should of bought 10'
I have a short fence that I wanted to add 6' cedar planks to like over the existing planks ......any thoughts how that could work ??? The same way as you did the fence in this video ?? Any other suggestions???
@@paulstoolbox I live in a 200+ unit condo association. Don't get me started. I had to get a permit to replace a brick patio with a concrete patio. I had to get a permit to install a screen door, even though many units don't even have screen doors.
Hi John, I built it 10 years ago, I pressure washed it the other day so I can re-stain. I really should’ve kept it up better but I had a lot of things going on and sometimes I get laxed on the easy projects LOL. Thanks buddy, have a great day!
I just had quack contractor extend my existing 6x6 posts from 4' to 6' by notching with the ne to the old, well it doesn't fit together at all, it looks awful and then they blamed it on me, said it as my idea, ummm no it wasn't, I said I paid your extra price for your knowledge and expertise to the job correctly, not to save me a buck, I never said anything about the amount, I anted the job done right! Then it was left up to me to figure out a way to make it look presentable, I honestly have never seen a worse job, and a lot of times I go with the lo bidder!
Wow, sorry to hear that! I’ve seen a lot of jack legs in this business. He should have known better than to do that with 6x6 posts. I wouldn’t expect the average person to know that but a contractor definitely should know better.
How did you add fence height? Is the outside of the fence on your property. I would love to raise a section of mine but it butts up to a neighbor’s yard and it just happens to be the reason I want to raise it.😬 any ideas?
Yes the fence is on my property side but I gave my neighbor the good side and decorated mine with Post. I’m very fortunate to have great neighbors all around me. I hear really bad stories about people all over with terrible neighbors, not saying that you have bad ones. Usually when neighbors get along they will split the cost of the fence. Most of the time the person who has the fence installed will put the good side toward them. If the finished boards are facing you, maybe the person before you put up the fence and you can do whatever you want. If your neighbor put up the fence with the finished side on his or her property you may be able to talk to him and put your fence boards taller or the existing rails and Box it like I did. Good luck and have a great day!
Does anyone know how high you can extend posts safely? I have posts in the ground from my previous fence. I originally was going to dig them up and replace them, but now considering just adding 4ft posts on top of the existing 4ft posts (4ft above ground 2 ft under), just wasn't sure if that would be structurally sound.
Can you double the size of your fence if you have 6 foot fence or do you need to start over? Have a 6 foot fence but need a 12 to 15 foot fence. Thanks
It would be better IMO to pocket hole up from the bottom part instead of down from the top so water doesn't get into the holes by gravity. Otherwise excellent, use of screws for flexibility muy bueno. As to inflation, Let's Go Braindead!
I’m the one that raised the fence, I like to test things and make sure they work. I had to redo the post because I did them in Cedar originally and I wanted treated this time. This was the perfect time to show you exactly what I did and how you can do it yourself. The title is correct. Thanks

I'm glad you mentioned the price, cause that was my number one question. That's fence would cost probably 200k nowadays. It's so sad.
Thanks Paul! Showing you making the caps and any other finish steps would be greatly appreciated!!!
Show it all, man - gonna be a lot more people doing DIY in these coming days - glad you’re doing better 😃👍🙏🏻💪
The content was great, seeing you posting videos again is even better.
Wishing you many happy and healthy years ahead Paul!
Hey Clint, how have you been my body? Thank you for taking the time to watch it especially comment! Do you have a great day!
I'd like to try the caps on my back deck. Also, I'm intrigued by the spider blade. I'm glad your back 😊
Thanks Paul for your positive attitude & patriotism in all your projects! 🇺🇸⭐🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸👍
Thank you starblazer, I really appreciate that! God bless!!

I would probably miter those cap runners to give it a cleaner look. Great idea, well thought out and well done

Thank you sir. Always willing to listen. Looks great!
I wonder if his neighbors think he’s crazy for yelling by himself in the backyard everyday. they be like honey the neighbor is outside again
Lmaooooo 😂
Lol, they all know me now, but you should’ve seen the looks I got in my driveway when I was talking to the camera and they we’re passing by!!
beautiful, sir. exactly what i was looking for 👊🏼
Paul, I love this solution on extending the post. Could wood glue be added in addition to screwing the posts, together. For added strength?
Nice look on the fence, thought about doing the same concept. Great video!
Great vid! Info was worth a million and you gave it free!! Thank you!!

Thats a good option as well, glad to hear it held up. Thanks for the input!
love your energy and visual work
I love the video. Did you use and cut pickets for the extra height once you increased the height post to make it over 7 feet?
Thank you Paul. You would have thought it, your amazing and so glad your doing well.

I think I missed the part where you take the fence from the beginning and get to the end... Did you cut the fence pickets or replace them?
Can you do the same with the pickets?
Appreciate your knowledge sharing, this is relevant for me now!
Thank you David, I hope it goes well for you!
Paul Ricalde for president!
You are great but I can barely handle being a fireman….lol. I put wet stuff on the red stuff!

What about railings when timber extends past the post?
Hey. Can you show us how to put the cap board on top of the fence? You can come over and use my fence anytime!
Looks beautiful!!! Great idea!!!
Thank you Vivian!
Great video… I’m so frustrated with inflation!! 🤬😡
Great video my top fence had to be removed because of a tree branch tipping over the top fence and pushing the top fence over
Nice job thanks for sharing
Thank you Brandon!

I'm out of ideas LOL sorry.
Awesome way to safe money if you just need to raise the height of a fence ♥️😃✌🏼
Work in the Connecticut area!???
Hey Paul great video! I live out here in Destrehan. Where are you buying your cedar?
Could this be done with cedar 8' length 6"X 6" over 3' length 6"X 6" green treated wood?
For gazebo post
Edit: I have four 8' when I should of bought 10'
Can I use a mending plate instead of buying that jig? Thank you
Always smart solutions!
Nice! Thank you Paul.
I see you used the Craig tool to drill the holes, what can i do if i don't have that tool to predrill holes?
Can you extend the height of a split rail fence where the posts are rounded?
I have a short fence that I wanted to add 6' cedar planks to like over the existing planks ......any thoughts how that could work ??? The same way as you did the fence in this video ?? Any other suggestions???
Don't forget to check city codes. Here, maximum height is 6 feet.
Good point, I had to get permission from the neighborhood association as well!

@@paulstoolbox how did you do the top of the fence?
Is that a brad nailer or finished nailer?
Does it need a city permit to make the fence taller? My backyard doesn’t have that post because it’s a shared fence from my neighbor (boundary fence).
Paul, how can I raise deck post that already 3ft thru the Deck and concreted in the ground? I want to put a roof (shed roof) on the deck.
Would this work so I can attach hooks for a sunshade?
Great help!
Nice work
Nice video. Great Information.

awesome my Warrior
Like the fence. Did you need a permit for over 6’?
No, my area does not allow 8 foot fences but if I’m under eight I’m OK.
before you do that the township would like to inspect height mostly 6 feet aloud.
Yes, I agree. Codes are all not the same, it’s a good idea to check 1st. Have a good day Joe and thanks!
Thanks
Awesome!!

But first check your City/County Code for fence height
Yes, that’s good information. 7’ is our limit over here.
@@paulstoolbox
Yes when the city inspectors came to my house...
I had to cut it lower..
I stayed 1 inch under their maximum limit
But what does it look like on the other side?

If only this didn't violate fence height in more than 8,000 cities. I really hope people research first. 😂
Check local codes. I know in California over 6’ you need a permit. I know it’s ridiculous.
Another way to bleed a turnip. Have a good day!

Deceptive title. Installed a new fence higher than the original and put a bandaid on a fence post.
