    HISTORY OF THIS TRICK
    In 1922, Harry Houdini was the most famous magician in the world. The forty-eight year old Houdini was so confident in his knowledge of magic that he had an open challenge to all fellow magicians - 'show me any trick three times in a row and I'll be able to tell you how you did it.' At the Great Northern Hotel in Chicago, Dai Vernon took the great Houdini up on his challenge. But Vernon would not repeat his trick three times in a row - Dai Vernon repeated it SEVEN TIMES and Houdini could not get it!
    The trick Dai Vernon chose to fool Houdini with was his own version of the classic ambitious card routine, so named because the spectator's chosen card always wants to get to the top of the deck. Vernon had Houdini choose a card and then sign the chosen card with his initials 'HH'. Houdini returned his card to the middle of the deck and, with a snap of Vernon's fingers, it magically appeared on the top. Houdini was astounded and Vernon repeated the trick. And then again, for the third time. 'You must have a duplicate card!' Houdini guesses, Vernon calmly points outs: 'With your initials, Harry?' Houdini then suggests that Vernon must have used a well-known mentalist's device. But Vernon points out that Houdini's initials are written in ink. 'They make them in ink now!' Houdini splutters but no magician in the room has ever heard of these devices using ink. 'Harry you are fooled!' cries Sam Margules, a Magic Show producer and former assistant of the Whirlwind Illusionist, Horace Goldin.

    Many false info in this video...
    And for those saying that it didn't fool them, it is because they know these moves and double backer exist. Vernon invented them himself, and then did the trick to Houdini. Nobody knew these even existed. So no, you are not a better magician than Houdini

    Nice tutorial. I already know how it's done, but I like the way you present it. Especially that little piece of history. You should try incorporating more historical aspects of the tricks into your videos, that'll help your tutorials stand out from the rest! I've seen many people teach the ambitious card, but this is the first time I've ever seen someone mention Houdini.
    I also find it amusing how so many people are going "this couldn't fool Houdini", not realising that it was nearly a hundred years ago, in an era that wasn't just pre-internet, it was also a time when this sort of thing wasn't even published in books, they were closely guarded secrets among card sharks. People tend to forget that all of these things we take for granted now were really innovative and that countless masters such as Vernon would have to work on it for years to perfect a single technique to the point when some random kid could just go on the internet and learn the secret in 5 minutes.

    • @oscar
      @oscar  7 років тому +4

      Thanks for the feedback 888SpinR. I think including historical aspects makes the video much more entertaining and enjoyable to watch. I will certainly continue to upload videos and make them as high quality and informative as possible. Thanks for you kind words.

    • @normanacree1635

      What you are saying is that learning to play the guitar, for example is so much easier just because I can learn it by watching somebody play it on the internet? I don't think so. Simply being able to watch somebody do somebody do something doe not equate to being able to do it well. In other words, to "learn the secret in 5 minutes" is not enough. The internet simply exposes more people to the skill.

    In one of my e-books, I gave the most probable routine that Vernon used - I have researched it intensely and verified with my friends Jon Racherbaumer, Jim Swain, J.K. Hartman, and others.
    No one is sure whether Vernon only placed the "Ambitious card" under the top card or used his Depth Illusion...I believe Vernon used his Depth Illusion, which was renamed with some subtleties later, by Marlo, which he called TILT.
    I am not absolutely sure who is to be credited for double-back cards, but Jean-Eugene Robert-Houdin (the magician that Houdini fashioned his name after), was known to have used double-back cards for at least two tricks, in the mid-1800s. Whether he created them or not, no one knows for sure. Vernon did not create the double-back card.

    houdini didn't say no one can fool him, he said no one can fool him with the same trick 3 times. in 1919 in chicago dai vernon showed this trick to houdini when vernon was 25,he didn't put the card in the middle at all,he always put it second from the top. after 2 times houdini said that vernon is using duplicate cards, then houdini signed the card, and vernon still brought the card to the top,he did this 7 times. houdini never officially admitted that he was fooled by this this but this is what dai vernon said.

    you all are forgetting some things. double lifts were new at the time. so we're double backers. The fact that with a double backer the card is legitimately on top was the fooling element. also, he used the Marlo tilt, he didn't put it second from top. Houdini didn't know this control.

I don't believe they revealed "the how", but I wasn't paying that close of attention. So my lack of attention prompted a quick Google search to appease my curiosity. Thanks! Hopefully you'll stop getting comments denying that Houdini was fooled by a card trick. If you do, direct them to this episode that elaborates on the event in question.

    Decent ambitious card routine, the double lifts are quite obvious, but that double backer helps a lot to cover it. I'm sure Houdini would of checked the deck though, and seen the double backer

      sourish iyengar thanks for the feedback. Obviously if this was being performed to a spectator I would use misdirection or a wrist keel to hide the double life. Unfortunately you can't do that on UA-cam 😂

      @fingerjack 7 років тому

      Oscar Owen You can have a decent DL on UA-cam. You can have a bulletproof DL. You just have to work on your technique instead of excuses.

    I remember seeing the thing about Houdini getting fooled by this, but I remember that they said that he signed the card.
    Either way, signed or bent, it would work with this technique.

    I got the first and last one without the tutorial part, maybe the two cards were too far apart on the double lift though.

    dunno I'm guessing double lifts weren't invented at the time houdini was around

      Actually, I guess you could say double lifts were invented around the time that Houdini quit doing card tricks.

    Don't tell u will place it in the middle, juste take a giant pinkie break under the top card and place it under, it will be way better

    Très bonne vidéo pour une première fois, Merci pour les infos. Ne te soucie pas trop des mauvais commentaires, car il es facilement
    possible de critiquer au lieu de prendre le bon coté instructif. Les bon magiciens se respecte dans les règles , contrairement aux autres Innocents.

    Placing it openly second from the top is a big mistake that may reveals the DL to a layman
    DL secret should be better guarded than that. Doing the Tilt is a mandatory alternative to your routine

    That just goes to show that what we take as basics now was not even invented back then. Imagine that Vernon did an advanced invisible pass, or a DPS that would be pretty mindblowing for Houdini
