If It's all the same to you and you guys have unlimited budgets swapping in a manual is all I'd have considered since you already had the motor and trans out of the car.
In 1990, I had a 1985 Cutlass supreme. I pulled out the anemic 307 130 HP engine, and built a 403 Olds small block based on the David Smith Oldsmobile design. 9:1 compression, pump gas, I sent the computer-controlled quadrajet to the carb shop to have it reworked. That being said, at the end of it all it ran a 12.70 in the quarter mile. I had mated it it to a 700R4 using a TCI adapter so it can bolt to a BOP motor. Those were some of the best days.
@@viiriix6525 My one mistake was having a non Olds a person work on my heads. I didn't want to ship them to California to Dave Smith and lose a couple of weeks with my only car. So I had a local guy work on it, after that, the car started running like crap. Number four cylinder lost the valve seats. I pulled the heads off the engine on the stand. Unfortunately, someone went to use my engine stand and didn't the cover my motor back up and it ruined my engine with it's sitting out in the air. I think I paid $600 at the time to have Dave Smith give me a set of heads with larger 2.072 and 1.625 valves, dual springs, new guides and seals. Had I known better at the time as I was really new at this, for $1,600 instead of $600, I could have had them do a full-out set of performance heads for me. I have a 2004 R rebuilt Art Carr performance transmission in my 72 olds. 30 over 455. 400 + horsepower. That 2004R rebuilt with the right parts would do just fine behind that engine. The nice thing about the 2004R is it’s the same length as the turbo 350. No driveshaft or yoke change. The gear ratio is better than that 700. And you have to use an adapter plate to mate it to the olds. The 200 has a universal case. BOP and Chevy.
I'm sure Monster gave them the 700R4, I have an '85 442 and my 2004R Bowtie Overdrives level 2 trans held up to 6000 RPM shifts and burn outs behind a built 403 (easily 425hp) and that trans is still fine. AND think it's cheaper than a Monster 700R4!
Never have been a GM fan, but I can appreciate this build, especially since you're using an Olds engine and not just throwing another LS in it like everybody and their brother does. Back in the early 70's, my friend had a '71 442 455 that was pretty nasty. I was driving one evening and happened to pick a race with a '69 Pontiac Gran Prix, and it was pretty scary watching the speedo run back around past zero. With my friend talking to Jesus, I managed to pass the Gran Prix with traffic coming at us. We got down the road, the Pontiac disappeared, and we stopped to gather our nerves together. Never tried that again!
Right?! I understand product placement to pay the bills, but when engine bay cleaner and rust penetrator gets more screen time than the actual engine removal and install, it gets a bit ridiculous. At least cut back a bit on the Mopar show or something to actually focus a bit of time on the build. 🙄

The 200 4R could have been built to handle the 455 and would bolt up to the block without an adapter. While the 700 is easier to source, it has a Chevy bell housing, a fact that YOU DID NOT MENTION! I know advertisers run the show, but you need to be honest with your viewers, most of whom have not driven a '69 Delta 88 out of the showroom, lacking the real life experience of wrenching on a car.
Why in the hell would anyone swap a superior 2004R for a POS 700R4? Sponsors, that's why. They couldn't survive behind stock swirl port 350's, why would I want one behind a 455? No good reason at all, unless it was free like on this show.
Even after all these years, some people still don't get it and have to spend more money to get the 700 to work where a 200-4R originally was installed. Plus, they don't even realize that the 200-4R is a better transmission. I'll gladly take that weak transmission off of your hands. By the way, it's 200-4R not a 200-R4. I hate it when a car guy says it wrong. It immediately makes them think there not so smart of a car guy after all.
THey do some pretty interesting builds on Engine power now with the new kid that I'd say are definitely budget friendly builds. Joe came on the show well over 10 years ago when they first built this 455.
I said before and I'll say it again. It ashame they took a part well condition 40+ year old, Hurst Edition low numbers survivor car. I would have preferred a black and gold 442 or a regular cutlass Supreme full restored as Hurst Edition clone or a Joe Mondelo tribute car. My 2 cents.
I assume these guys are in California, where they could find plenty of donor cars in little to no rust. Instead they find good examples of rare(r) cars and ruin what little they had going for them for price and nostalgia reasons. But, a budget is a budget, and this show must go on. I'd much rather see guys take an old base model car and make it a clone, or even a wild street car. It'd also be nice to see shows like this doing up a car with a small budget in mind.
That's an expensive transmission with a questionable future. I would have put in a stock 4l80e with a TCI controller. Cheaper and more reliable and no TV cable to worry about. I've gone through too many "built" 700r4s.
I’ve had a monster super duty 4l65e in my 07 classic Silverado for about 2 years and 100,000 miles of pretty much towing and I haven’t had an issue with it. Maybe I just got lucky but after seeing reviews I probably won’t be going with them again😂😂😂
2004R is light duty? 🤣 Tell that to the turbo Buick community with those transmissions running 9's, even 8's. You dumped that for a POS monster transmission?!? Ahahahaha
Another waste of time powernation show. Half the show is selling products & not showing any of the build. Also, don't forget the "field trip" to a random boring swap meet or whatever. Would be nice to actually see a powernation show that actually does what the title says it was going to do. Probably why the show no longer exists except in rerun form.

It's more wider than just 3/4" on each side....
I'd would have picked a real classic for such an amazing endeavor, this car doesn't exactly scream ol, school a 455 engine deserve a real car.
Take a look at my 85, and say that again.. 😜
Cool project but man, that’s a lot of advertisements and product placement.
I like how he chose a gm not bop pattern
G.M. IS b.o.p.... 😕
Ole bill nye over here
@@chrishitchner6826 Well, you were wrong... 🤷🏻🤦🏻
Tommy i thought a Hurst OLDS.came with a 4 speed box.!!!
it does a 200r4. they are replacing it with a equally crappy 700r4
@@davidvaughn7778 I believe they are in Tennessee.
@@crw3673 that would account for the accent of one of the guys.
That's an expensive transmission with a questionable future. I would have put in a stock 4l80e with a TCI controller. Cheaper and more reliable and no TV cable to worry about. I've gone through too many "built" 700r4s.
Dont think that trans is gonna hold up long Behind that 455
What kind and yr headers are they
You need a transmission BOP pattern to fit an Oldsmobile engine, that one won't fit
Is that 200 4r trans for sale
You would think after all these years they would know that monster transmission is a joke... Then things don't hold up at all
If monster spent a fraction of the budget spent on advertising as the did on research and development they might be worth the money.
Monster transmissions aren't worth the ugly spray paint that they're covered with!
I’ve had a monster super duty 4l65e in my 07 classic Silverado for about 2 years and 100,000 miles of pretty much towing and I haven’t had an issue with it. Maybe I just got lucky but after seeing reviews I probably won’t be going with them again😂😂😂
Shake weight hanging on the tool wall😄 Shouldn't there be a limit to how many sponsors can be in one video?
I’d imagine that beyond their control
They got a Shake Weight hanging on their tool wall 😂
Let us introduce you to Individual Throttle Bodies for LS! and LS3. The best N/A intakes on the market.
Put a manual in it.
As it should be_ a 455
It is
Was this a commercial to sell items? I do t remember Power Nation being this bad😢
2004R is light duty? 🤣 Tell that to the turbo Buick community with those transmissions running 9's, even 8's. You dumped that for a POS monster transmission?!? Ahahahaha
Rusty Hardware is my stage name 1:32
Another waste of time powernation show. Half the show is selling products & not showing any of the build. Also, don't forget the "field trip" to a random boring swap meet or whatever. Would be nice to actually see a powernation show that actually does what the title says it was going to do. Probably why the show no longer exists except in rerun form.
Hmm. I wonder how they afford to make these shows?
Could it be the commercials and products they hock?
I mean no one is making you watch that’s your choice
@@TimothySchulting This episode actually came out like a month ago. Newest episode is S9E17, this is S9E14.
I can’t imagine these guys WANT to do product placements, they’re just doing what the corporate higher ups are telling them, somebody has to pay for the parts
@@marvinturnmire7406 What you forget is the additional 6 commercial breaks that are also selling products. I get they need sponsors, but sponsers that take up more time than the actual show is ridiculous.
Wheels and tires name?
200r4?
I don't believe in safety glasses either. (Stevie Wonder)
When y’all consider selling all the old parts y’all took off the car
Just another long ass ad!
I like these guys....but the show is just product placement. Five minutes of "work" and the rest selling us stuff. Its really insulting.
It’s probably not their call
@@dancampbell4400 the hosts have no say in what products are being shilled. whatever corporate overlord opps I mean sponsor threw the production company the most money is the ones that get shilled hardcore
That tommy guy isn't as fat and has a ton more hair on top..old show..but its ok!
