You're doing the project I've wanted to do since the early '80s. I own the '77 Granada Sport Coupe, 302/4 speed, that I bought brand new in July of '77. She's solid, but very tired, and has been in the garage under cover for... a long time. It's full of NOS parts I've been stockpiling for 20 years or so. I retire in the spring and I think the project's going to get rolling. Thanks for the extra motivation.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the 77 2-door, 302/4 speed Granada. My best friend in high school had one in around 1980. What a great car that was. The only customization he made on it was dual exhaust. I’ve always been a GM/Chevy guy but I’d get one of those rare 2 door 4 speed cars in a second, if I could find one. Good luck with your project.

I enjoy seeing the less edited scenes of them brainstorming and when things don't go perfectly. When things are perfectly edited and things magically always work out it takes away from the realness of it all. At the end of the day, it's an engine building show and anyone in the buisness will tell you that things never go magically perfect. Thanks for putting these shows out for us to enjoy 🍻

I had a 77 mercury monarch (same car, different badge.) That thing was a nice driver, I built the engine up a bit with a low mile block, comp cams magnum 270 cam, 351w heads (72) with basic port matching and the egr hump ground out, backed with a c4 that I'd built myself (nothing special, but stage 2 shift kit.)
Probably still only made around 200-250hp, but for a first car and something I'd done by myself on a budget, nothing to be ashamed of (mid-90's build up.)
Side note - dumping the exhaust just in front of the wheels with a slightly down turned tip made that thing a great snow thrower in winter! 😂

Had a 75' Granada 2 door, 302, 3 speed manual factory floor shift. Used headers for a 72' mustang. Had to do some cut and weld adjustment on the clutch linkage. Other than that they fit without any clearance issues. Lincoln Versailles 9" with disk brakes is a direct replacement. Fun car. Also had a 82' Granada 4 door, 2.3 factory propane only fueled car, also a neat car.

What a blast from the past. My first car was a 1975 four door Granada in white. I built the 302 that was factory and increased the compression, a performance cam and a Holly 600 carb. I estimate 300ish hp, although I never had it on the dyno. I also had the C4 gone through with a shift kit and stall converter. This was back in 1983. I had Hooker headers that dropped right in. Not surprising there's difficulty in finding performance parts for this car now. I seemed to be a little easier back in the day. I took it to the High School Drags at Bandimere Speedway.

Back in the early 80's, we built a 1979 Mercury Monarch (same car as the Grenada) with a 351w with ported (by me) heads, a Streetmaster (single plane) intake and an "RV cam". I was the only Ford guy in my group of friends who ALL owned SBC powered rides. Not one of them wanted to race me in my Ford, especially after riding in it. Lol.
Btw, the easiest headers we found were from an early 70's Torino with the 351w. They needed a ding here and there but they fit great. Even 60's Fairlane headers would have worked.

I couldnt get long tube headers to fit it so i put shorty headers and slide out cut outs on it for racing. It was quiet until you opened the cutoffs. Then you could hear it a mile away. It was pretty quick. It would run high 10's in the quarter naturally aspirated. I probably could have put it on nitrous and low 10's to high 9's. It had a c4 with shift kit and a 3000 stahl with a 373 posi in 9 inch ford rearend. On 60 series rubber

As far as performance potential in an economy offering, I believe the Ford Fairmont was available with a 302 in "78. It weighed less than 3,000 lbs and the most powerful V8 version made 139 hp. This 530 hp 302 and performance suspension along with considerable body bracing could result in a stunning Q ship. 5.7 lbs/hp would provide some eye opening launch potential

Brings back memories!!!!! My dad in the late 70's bought a 4 dr. used 78 Granada 302 C4, drove me around everywhere. In the mid 80's got myself a 2 dr. 78 G with 250 6cyl. Junked it when in 88 or 89 came across another 2 dr. 78 with 302 V8 with bad lifters that I bought for $50 bucks. Pulled the motor did a mild rebuild with decent cam, Hedman LT headers and alum. d/plane intake manifold. That car was fun!!!!!
Junked that car in early 90's and left the Granada scene till almost in the year 2000 a widow sold me her late husband's 78 Granada for $1. Also a 2 door but back to 250 cid 6. Drove that car for a few years till a co-worker 1 day knew of a 77 Granada with a 351W/ pan fill C4. I bought that car as a parts car to do a swap into my $1 car.
351W ran ok but not great but it let me drop it in and get things working with fitting my mod parts. Hooker 6208 headers fit with slight firewall denting on pass. side. Rebuilt the C4 and added "H" servo, strip valve body, adj. modulator, 3000 stall. B&M quicksilver shifter replaced the column shift. After a few months of running this setup with the stock 351W I pulled out the engine during the winter months and sent it to an engine shop to turn it into a 408W stroker. Scat crank, eagle H beam rods, forged pistons, Crower solid flat tappet cam, E/brock V Jr. alum heads, 1.7 ratio roller rockers, Air gap manifold with 950 cfm Holley carb. That engine ran great!!!!! Car was still a bit rough body wise but totally fit into the sleeper model (except for the idle and exhaust noise). Had to notch the trans cross member to fit the 3" exhaust underneath through dynomax mufflers and dumps at the rear end. Got the suspension fixed up a bit so while handling wasn't great in corners went great in a straight line (freaked out a Viper on a straightaway on a highway roll).
A few years of running that car and the body got REALLY tired so it was time to move on, sold the complete engine/trans combo to a guy that put it into his Mustang and got word from him shortly after he got it in his car it ran low 10's. That 408W worked!!!!!
Looking forward to the rest of the series, sorry for the length of this comment.

Dudes! I traded a beater truck for a decent ‘76 Grey Granny in 1990. It did not like to be left out in the rain & would stall & die regularly if driven in wet conditions. I was too poor to score anything else so I kept swapping out the ignition box modules (red tab) & would dry them out between by baking them in the oven for 30 minutes @lowest temp setting. That beast would fire right up & go again until it rained again. Tough gig in Portland OR. Drove it for 5 years. Left it on a side street with “Free & good luck” sign on the dash & keys in it. Good times!

I know Grenadas never came with Clevelands. Iirc, 351c's were sold between '70 and '73 so none would have been around for a factory Grenada install. Thinking back on it more now brings back more details. That motor was from a '72 something. I honestly forget the year of the Grenada, thinking now it might have been a '76 (doesnt matter any more) but it had been made into a sleeper by the previous owner with that motor swap. I bought it in San Fran in 2000 and swapped out the tired 289 4bbl for the 351. Was stationed in Nor Cal at the time, took it with me to Connecticut when I transferred. I sold my Mustang in 2003 up there.
And thank you for the correction. Helps to jog the memory and get details right.

I always thought these Granada's were very smooth and comfortable. But vastly under-powered. I think his car was a 6 cyl...not much get up and go. Nice project!

These past two shows on this car remind me of the old days with Chuck and Joe when the show was about adding horsepower to cars.

Good to see another vid from the pocket pen father and son team, doing old school stuff. Loving the show casing of America quality products on the show as well. Go the "power enhancing chemicals", my favourite kind. Really looking forward to seeing how the Granada gets down the strip with a 100 or more shot, ricers beware of American muscle.

Seriously that would be fun to see those cars and what they should’ve been from the factory. they were made so terribly underpowered.

Same. Tbey are probably chesp to buy. The Cordoba came with a 400 big block, IIRC. Hop that up and it would very comfortable as well as reasonably quick.

Header for 65-70 Mustang are a direct bolt on to stock heads. The AFR heads probably need the "Sportsman head" pattern ports.

My first car was a '77 Mercury Monarch, the Granada's sister car. 302 Auto with a 2.47 rear gear. What a dog! I do recall it had a LOT of chassis components in common with the '69-70 Mustang. I wonder if those headers would't be a better fit than Maverick?

  • @randyoehlert5045

Put 302 in my 62 Falcon found HEADMAN HEADERS made a set that fits. Was real tight but they work.

Hooker used to make full length headers for the Granada. They worked with 302 automatics, but not the 3+1 manual.

In the late 70s late night Tv programming was stacked with a choice of private detective shows to sift through . If your wanting to see some funny wheeled action of the Grenada’s chase scenes you’ll just nee to search Barnaby Jones , a certain thrill ride ! 80 hp beast

So, almost 100HP per liter without forced induction or exotic fuel injection, that's good. Modifying headers without causing flow problems, that's also good. I love watching people who know what they're doing it well! The only question I'm asking myself is what is this super sleeper going to drive like.

  • @robertwest3093

My best friends mom drove a white Granada. I didn't know you could make a V8 so weak kneed! I'm sure the true 7.5 compression ratio and single exhaust under 2 inches did a lot to neuter it.

I wanted one of those cars with a 460 , with the problems they had with the headers, even with stock exhaust manifolds, the 460 would require a lot of cutting.

I see duration on your cam, lobe separation and centerline. BUT what lift? I am just comparing it to a 347 stroker I built and wishing I had mine on a dyno. Eagle stroker kit, girdled, hi volume pump. GT40x heads with a mass amount of porting and time on the flow bench. Machined for Manley dual springs. 1.7 roller rockers. 236/244 dur.@ .050 Lift 570/565 Comp Cams grind 506000. Weinland tunnel ram with Holley 600cfm carbs. Summit billet distributer/ MSD. It is in a 79 Fox body , narrowed 9" 4.11 gears. C-4 TCI converter. I drool watching you tune on the dyno. I suspect it is in the 500 HP range but we all want to have it on paper. I am convinced that the tunnel ram will deliver with this setup.

That car reminds me of my old 4 door mercury monarch. It was a very nice car it had a console amd leather electric seats and leather interior. I nicknamed it my baby Lincoln. It was a very nice car compared to a old granada. But when i got it it was in my in laws family since it was brand new. The motor had over 200k miles on it when i got it. So i killed that motor and found a 1969 ford 302 amd i did a bunch of hp upgrades and it ended up at just under 500 hp at the rear wheels. It was a fast car. The only thing that beat me was a 77 trans am with a big block and nitrous . He only beat me by half a car. I outran vettes, camaroes , and mustangs on regular basis. Had lots of fun in that car. It was very quiet and you couldnt tell what it had under the hood until i pulled open the headers plates and then whoever i was racing knew there was about to be a heck of a race
