all-new Toyota Corolla Hatchback Review

  • Toyota is trying to move the Corolla from a logical, practical buying decision to one of passion and sportiness. With a larger car, built on Toyota's global platform, this new Corolla hatchback with independent rear suspension, is a good handling car with 168hp and 151lb-ft. of torque thanks to a 2.0L engine. The all-new Corolla Hatchback is sold with a 6-speed manual transmission or a new CVT that has a rear, 1st gear cog then it reverts to a CVT. This hybrid style of transmission helps to alleviate the delay that can be experienced with an CVT. The all-new Toyota Hatchback compact car has apple car play, an 8-inch display audio screen but no android auto.

    Finally a competitive Corolla? It's been years. I love the 10th gen Civic but I don't like the looks of the hatch. The Corolla hatch actually looks better than the Civic hatch right now.

      Honda Civic had been at the top of my list to replace my aging Accord, however, Honda’s turbo engine which is in various Accords and Civics, is having well-publicized reliability issues, in addition to transmission problems. Hondas even have problems with paint peeling! Toyota makes a higher quality, more reliable product.

      Yeah they made a mistake releasing the Type R and the Civic Si. They should have stuck with the Si only and NA engine only.

      Can argue either way, but the fact that Toyota gets away from extraneous chrome makes more sense than what Honda does. Details. Unfortunately, NONE of the Asian cars aside from maybe the Lexus IS have the refined style of a German car or a Volvo. When the Golf electric arrives, I think it will be the best-selling compact alternative fuel/hybrid/electric car. The E-golf with 300 miles range only needs better-looking wheels. I have seen this Corolla in person and its backside very unattractive. It's almost as if the designers are required to fuck up one big thing on these Japanese bodies. If this is a car worth considering, I think when its body contours are improved and made even more minimal with aggression/sportiness, then we'll have one very attractive compact car.

    Beautiful car, but I HATE when car companies use the tablet-style GPS/radio. Its almost a deal breaker for me if I was shopping for a vehicle. I prefer the GPS integrated into the dash over the tablet-style. My personal preference.

    Bought the CVT model. Test drove it right after the Im, the 2019 feels world's smoother. Without a doubt a dream to drive. Unfortunately a little loud on rough roads. But fantastic shift and feels larger than it is. I just wish the spare tire didn't cut down on the space in the trunk. Would 100% recommend to others.

    6:00, I hate the fact that satellite radio in many models is now pushed to the higher trim levels. Wish Toyota would "layer" on some Android Auto, a lot of us use Google Maps in the car on a regular basis, even the over-50 crowd like me. I think it's a decent car otherwise, but did the Plymouth Horizon have more space in the back than this?

    Zack, This is undoubtedly a highly evolved and competitive car but I am glad you highlighted the diminished headroom. Many Matrix/ Vibe owners will really feel the ceiling is pushing down on them when they sit in this for the first time. I also think the rearward visibility is a let down. During the build up to the release of this new hatch, many people commented on the hope/need for the Camry's 200hp 2.5 engine to be an option. Guess what, the bigger/heavier Camry actually gets better highway fuel economy with its more powerful engine. Lastly, with hundreds of thousands of Matrix/Vibes sold in Canada, I really hope Toyota considers selling us the Corolla wagon they offer in Europe.

      Right Lane Hog excrllent point about engine power and MPG. Looking at the specs for subcompact, compact, and midsize vehicles, the subcompacts often arent more efficient, and even less efficient, than larger offerings from within the same brand. Same between conpacts and midsize. Makes no sense to me. Compare Camry and Yaris, Sonata and Accent, Accord and Fit. Aside from price, there's not much point buying economy sedans anymore.

    • @rightlanehog3151
      @rightlanehog3151 6 років тому +4

      Maybe I am wrong but I cannot remember a non-hybrid Camry beating a Corolla in mpg. Who knows what TMC might have in the product pipeline but previous generations of Corolla/Matrix/Vibe offered an upgrade to a 2.4 liter engine. If they did something similar now it looks like the upgrade would be power and fuel economy.

    • @Soh90
      @Soh90 6 років тому +5

      Right Lane Hog Car & Driver reported a impressive 45mpg on their non hybrid Camry LE. The Camry is incredibly efficient. It would be silly for Toyota to not do a “XRS” version with the Camry’s 2.5L mill.

      Cecil L, Car & Driver just tested the Corolla SE hatch (automatic and 16" wheels) and could only manage 40 Miles Per US Gallon on the same route. That's a 12.5% difference in highway mpg compared to that Camry. Bring on the Corolla 2.5!!!!!!

    I test drove it. Very good looking, fun, but the trunk is so small....it is useless. My wife and I have no kids and still this was problem enough to make us NOT buy it. You basically put two gallons of milk and it is full. My 2003 Mazda Protege 5 has 19.8/38.2(rear seats down) cubic feet space. This car has 17.8/23.3(rear seats down) cubic feet space!!! Toyota...people go grocery shopping, to the Beach/Mountain/Lake/River, why did you have to make such a stupidly small trunk?!?! Obviously this car won't have "SUV-type" space, but come on! The Corolla hatchback already has a RECALL on their CVT Transmission!

Hopefully, ingress/egress of the rear seat as well as view out the rear windows for taller passengers will be sorted out in the sedan version when it's available. Would be nice to see Toyota come up with an XRS model with more power and stiffer chassis to enable it compete with the civic SI. The gaping nose looks nice this time around. Great news for lovers of sidewall, Toyota is offering a stripped version of the new hatch to Canadians only with P195/65R15 tires on genuine steel rims! In fairness, they will provide a smoother ride and give an extra mile or two per gallon in fuel economy. Knowing that the brake rotors fit inside 15 inch rims also increases our snow tire options during Winter pothole season .

      those of us that live in the snowbelt, a higher profile tire is a compelling option in warm months too, since the potholes dont go away when the sun comes back! I noticed a massive improvement in ride quality between the 17" stock wheels on our Ford Escape and the aftermarket 16" wheels/higher profile tires I have on it now.

    • @rightlanehog3151
      @rightlanehog3151 6 років тому +3

      Y.O.T.D.82, I agree with you. Sidewall is crucial and I think 18" wheels on a 168 hp car are completely counterproductive. I made the comment because all the US reviews of the car leading up to the release only discussed the SE and XSE models with 16" and 18" rims.

    Can the rev-matching technology be turned off in the manual. It takes away the joy of driving manual and being able to down-shift to assist with slowing down instead of 100% brakes only. Currently drive 2015 MINI Cooper with the same feature which luckily you can turn off - however doing so also disables the dynamic stability feature and there's no way around it.

    My priorities for a vehicle now are quite different since I'll be the passenger now. It will be how easy it is to get in and out of the passenger seat with a cane or when I'm using my walker, I'm Diabetic with a twice torn Achilles Tendon in my right leg, so getting in and out can be a challenge, also the trunk or hatch has to large enough to fit my folding walker, my sister has a Kia SUV and it's just big enough for the walker. So the Corrola Hatchback may be a little small for me, but still a nice package.

    No wagon as option . I own a 2002 Corolla Wagon Levin. It’s got the option for a 4wd Drive train. Disappointed Toyota doesn’t make Corolla wagons for the Australian market anymore because their more economical to own and better handling than RAV4s.

    This is nice but will never be as refined as a Golf. Plus the 1.8T engine in the Golf is far more livable for merging and passing on the highway.

    I like it, but I don't like the low profile tires. They look cool and all but I need more side wall. There is a ton of potholes in my area. I wonder if the next Corolla sedan will have a manual transmission. The current one does not in the U.S. only the hatchback has a manual.

    I do not agree with your assessment of why no sun roof (due to low roofline). Most sun roofs now move up and out over the roof, not inside the roof. This reduces sun roof intrusion into the cabin to a minimum. Imo, toyota is exercising negligence or cost cutting by not offering a sun roof. I like the car but like sun roofs so this is a deal breaker for me,

    Looks like they benchmarked the Hyundai Elantra GT Sport for this. It has lots of similar features, like that floating centre display - strikes me as oddly similar to the Elantra GT. But that car comes with leather seats at $24k plus a panoramic sunroof and 201hp... I think I would rather buy that than this.

    I'm considering this on my short list of hatchbacks. I'm iffy on the styling. It's certainly got more style than a regular Corolla, but good styling? Eh. Bordering on ugly to my eye. Gaping mouth and bulbous butt don't speak to me. I priced this out against a Hyundai Elantra GT, which to me looks much more upscale and sophisticated in comparison. MSRP, the Corolla is actually cheaper, comparably equipped. No Android Auto is a big bummer with the Corolla, but not necessarily a deal breaker for me. I expect long-term reliability to be better with this Corolla hatchback, but I'm not so sure after reading about problems with the CVT and alternator in the current generation Corolla sedan. I know different CVT and engine, but still, it's concerning since Toyota only gives a 3/yr/36k mile warranty and Toyota reliability is SUPPOSED to be stellar. I'd almost rather chance it and get the Hyundai which may have more problems in the first 100k miles, but at least will be covered under warranty.

      I had my heart set on getting the '19 Corolla hatch but changed my mind and went with the Elantra GT. Styling doesn't grab your attention as much but it definitely will age better. The last straw for me was when I read about the small trunk space and back seat in the Corolla.

    • @AveryPlaysBass
      @AveryPlaysBass 5 років тому +1

      Kind of odd that you found the Corolla to be less expensive, as I’ve shopped around for Elantra GT sports and they have aggressive rebates as high as 5K off MSRP versus Corollas that are selling for 26-27 around me.
