What would be your recommendation for a heavy planted tank with in vitro plants for light? I have a wrgb 24w 1470lm light, and I'm not sure about the hours per day I should start with. I also have co2 injection, aquasoil, and a base fert layer (ada power sand).
If you are just starting I always go for 6h. And then add additional 30 minutes every week until I reach 8h. I also don't use CO2 from the very beginning, only after 5-7 days (to give the plants some time to start growing)
I'll be getting my very first plants next week, rotala and micro sword, and it'll be tissue cultures. Any suggestions on planting them in gravel, considering they're small with small roots? Should I keep the water shallow at first? Its fishless now so I can do that if needed.
You can keep the water shallow, just be careful not to make the light to bright (it will be "stronger" with shallow water). And fill the tank VERY slowly, not to disturb the plants. Do you have anything under the gravel? Any soil, root tabs etc.
Great video, I have never had any success with TC plants. I have two tanks with plants & fish, every TC I tried melted, some in days, others in weeks, some had strong growth 3-4 weeks b4 melt. Never had a TC make it past 5 weeks. I don't use CO2 or ferts, fish create a lot of NO3 tho. Never had a potted plant die on me yet. Some don't grow very fast & some have slowly been outcompete to the point I pull them for space months later. It sucks because TCs are a great price & snail free (if u care). YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY. My advice, try one TC and one potted of each plant you want & see which works better for you, then go buy the rest to fill the tank.
Thank you! That is surprising. I had nothing but success with TC plants. Maybe your supplier is not storing them correctly? And they are just doomed no matter what you do?
I think that even environmental benefit is that less plants are extracted from their natural habitat thus reducing the impact and possibly of a species going extinct.
