fun fact: mosul is not a foreign film. it was produced by the Russo brothers. Everyone involved just worked really hard to make it authentic. Pretty incredible honestly, first hollywood film with an all arab cast, and first hollywood film shot in arabic. filmed in moracco

We (Iraqi Police Advisors) trained the Iraqi SWAT Team on Diamondback (in Mosul) in 2004 & 2005. Most of the guys we trained were killed within a couple of years of our leaving. We believe this movie is about our guys. They all had enough balls for three men.

I was there too at Marez at that time and initially I was dismissive of the ICDC and IA, then as I got out and about and saw what crappy support and equipment they had and still stayed on I slowly changed my mind. The Peshmerga were another thing entirely.
@@Lafly84 I worked with a fellow who was Peshmerga. After a few years of getting to know him well he shared some history with me. I'd always respected him as he was just a kind person, but after the stories I realized that he had gone through hell and was able to keep that good part of him alive.
The Nineveh swat team is a badass group of fighters
The thing about the subtitles was how much they weren't needed in this film for the most part. The acting was so good that you knew what the characters were feeling, the interactions between the characters were universal.

The military advisor was Shawn Sweeney. I believe he was with 5th SFG and 20th SFG from 88 to 09. He was also State Department WPPS amongst other things.

@@Willysmb44 wrong… especially about wpps. Ask a random soldier what 20th Sfg is and tell me their stupid answer, thanks. The military very rarely works with state department considering all they do as a military organization… and even when they do they may never hear of wpps guys.
@@carpeomnia2011 agree, I was regular Army infantry. I knew and worked alongside of our SFG, No name government agency guys, AWG and even had a short run in with some SAS/SBS guys. I have no idea wtf WPPS is

My last tour of Iraq ended in Mar 2009, I lost five men Jan 28 2008 in Mosul. Mosul was Al Queada’s last stand that time frame and it was crazy, even US forces couldn’t stop in one place more than 20 minutes without seeing the enemy trying to maneuver in on you. Route clearance would clear a route and the enemy was laying new IEDs right behind them. We worked with the Kurdish IA a lot and those dudes were all business, the Kurdish IA wouldn’t talk to the Iraqi IA without an interpreter even though he spoke Iraqi because he had caught so many Iraqi IA that were corrupt. Mosul was a crazy place to be.

We had similar problems with our ANP partners that was a pain in the ass for our OMLT/mentoring team.
I'm positive those guys were partly responsible for the uptick we had in IEDs and harassment fire for the PRT.
Also it was the build up of the Afghan surge,and while we technically were not part of it.
The Taliban sure as hell didn't care if we were a contingent of grunts from Norway as well as Latvia mixed in with elements of the 10th Mountain division etc.
Or maybe they thought we would be pushovers..wrong;)

Picking up the trash in each liberated spot was like a fine chef touch that added so much culture and subtle background to his character. He believed in things being tidy and ordered and that's what he was ultimately fighting for hoping that it would one day return. Even in the compound doing the trade, it's not his trash but he's bending down and picking up their trash for them and doing it proudly showing he's not groveling or being submissive but displaying his integrity for all to see. It made the booby-trap that much more unexpected too. We've gotten used to main characters or even stars dying in movies now, it can happen but it's nearly always at the end, this was literally like two-thirds in and there was quite a bit more story after we lost him.
If I remeber correctly his character, before the war, was a professor, which adds up for his ordely manners and personality.

I found it as a way of saying he is leaving the place better than he found it, be that without trash or without ISIS.
I like the different interpretations people have come up with. I had a thought that it might have been a coping mechanism/habit he subconsiously does whenever they have any sort of downtime, something to put his mind to so it can stay active in order to not let his head linger too far while they have time to decompress.

I’ve helped trained Kurds(In Syria, not Iraq), and they are badasses. Competent, motivated, ect. Always trying to learn, soaking up knowledge and information, and extremely smart. I’m glad our main character in this film is a Kurd. We need more films like this.
They are idiotic US puppets and terrorists, hence Americans training them, who are about to be wiped out by Syria and Turkey who are now aligning against them, ie against America, now that Russia has facilitated the rapprochement of Syria and Turkey. The Kurds have had plenty of chances to accept offers for a largely autonomous region of Syria. They always refused and bought into Americas promises of a "Kurdish state". They were too dumb to see that America was never going to help give them a state and was just using them as terrorists to destabilize nations that refuse to bend the knee to America and as a general cassus belli for injecting itself into conflicts all over the Middle East.

They’ve been fighting for decades, and Turkey will never be able to successfully commit the genocide they have in mind. And the Syrian government is a joke, and couldn’t even successfully defend against IS.
Russia is also a joke.
The Kurds were never given any deal. Turkey constantly tries to commit genocide against them, and trains terrorist groups to fight the Kurds. Educate yourself.

The crazy part about this movie is the fact that they were filming it while we were still fighting ISIS in Northern Iraq and Syria. I was in Mosul when they were shooting this movie. Those scenes where all the rubble buildings are is West Mosul.

Id really like to recommend Danger Close, its an Australian movie about Vietnam. It tells the story of the Battle of Long Tan where a company sized element of Australian infantry fought off a battalion sized element of North Vietnamese troops. Its a good movie, that taught me (admittedly a civie) a lot.
'Thin Red Line' about Guadalcanal was great too.

30 minutes always go by quickly with b&b. Mosul is an amazing movie. The old team captain and the dude that rescued his family were former policemen if i recall correctly, so that probably explains the cop-like room clearing you mentioned. The actor who played the team captain is Iraqi and was an actor back in Iraq before he emigrated to the US in 08. Had a small role as an unfortunate guy strapped to a bomb in The Hurt Locker before this badass role.

This film blew me away. It was gritty, and there wasn't any "heroic" scenes like in American cinema. The commander died from the most mundane action, just like that, dead. And that's how it would be. There are no main characters in real life, people just die out of nowhere, for no understandable reason. I like that they didn't have him die like some hero, it really shows the true nature and horror and utter chaos of war. The scenes with the commander picking up the trash was a nice touch. To me, it was because not only was it his country, but one day they need to rebuild. He says that several times. What are they fighting for if not to take back their country, and rebuild from all the destruction. Him cleaning up is like doing his part to rebuild Iraq. The ending was brilliant, I have a daughter, and the end definitely had me tearing up.
Yeah the way it isn’t over the top stupid or overplayed it’s quick and painful sometimes and even showing the reality of things such as friendly fire and traps taking away people so quickly
This movie was fantastic. I loved that it told a story that didn’t involve any westerners. It was an Iraqi story, and the mindsets and tactics were realistic to how they fought ISIS. I read up on the Nineveh swat team and they really did help retake Mosul and suffered heavy casualties. The story in the movie is based on the truth that a number of members of the team were indeed trying to find their lost family as they cleared Mosul, although there was no rambo lone wolf mission to do so. They fought with russian small arms and what ever they could scavenge. They hung with much better equipped military units, with whom they could not share resources because as portrayed, other units used nato ammo and not russian.
Yeah, I could go on and on about this movie. It’s great!

Escape from tarkov
Another badass "foreign language film" (even though it's American and a majority of it is in English) is The Beast (or Beasts of War) from 1988. About the last stages of the Soviet War in Afghanistan. There's a similar gritty feel to it, and there's that whole element of local fighters fighting in their homeland. Nobody ever mentions this movie, but it's top tier IMO.
I worked with the Iraqi Army (Sunni in Al Anbar and Shiites in Basra) between 2007-2008. So I wasn't exactly thrilled when a lot of them started ending up in mass graves after we left and ISIS started rolling through. It was almost like our mini version of August 2021 for Afghanistan veterans (I was never in Afghanistan). The ending of this movie really got to me, so I never revisited it after I saw it the first time.
Two great clues to this ending. One, at the beginning when the new guy said "if he was married he would not be there and Walah went after him, it was because he hasn't seen his family in a couple of years. And, it's why the Major made him decide if they were going to take the compound, because his family was located there. This is one of the grittiest war movies I have ever seen and the realism is unmatched. If it was made in English it would have received many more awards and made a larger impact. However, it would have taken away from the raw feeling and atmosphere.
All because people are too damn lazy to read subtitles. Their loss for missing out on this gem.
Hey! Glad you guys came around to this one! Knew you would love it! The friendly fire incident strangely did it for me. No dramatic music, no slow motion, it was over before you realize it was happening and then it is time to move on. The drone was really cool, the infantry periscope as well and also the mouse trap detonator.
If you want more recommendations Elite Squad (aka Tropa de Elite) and the Escape from Tarkov series are pretty gnarly.
I first saw this movie when on chemo with nothing else to do. I've probably rewatched it at least 3-4 times it's so good.

I also don't normally enjoy reading while watching movies, but this film was just so good that I didn't realize I did any reading even after it was over. Rarely do I see a script work so well, characters so beautifully written, and a decent moral conclusion to finish it off.
I saw this movie about a year ago and actually found it more realistic than some of the American war movies.
Its an american movie too. But with an all Iraqi cast

To me, the ending of Mosul is very hard hitting. Going through hell to find each team member’s family.
I watched this movie after reading an article on Task & Purpose. Was awesome. Such a good movie, and really eye-opening on what people from there had to deal with. Can't even imagine having to save my wife from a sex slave camp, or having to clear my own neighbourhood of dudes that wanna behead me. Fuck...
Great review. My Dad is a Marine grunt who served three tours in Vietnam (mainly '69) with 2 purple hearts (shot in arm and leg). He said the only action scene that reminded him of Vietnam was the street battle in "Heat". I haven't asked him about this one. Anyway, thanks for ur service.
Was just reading some random article from reddit about how different units "clear" buildings. They said army always go as teams, but seals sometimes do multiple rooms simultaneously as individuals. Interesting seeing you talk about it in the video.
Don’t know if they mention it (I have to get back to work from lunch), but in terms of how close the unit is, they all call their leader baba (بابا) which means dad in Arabic, just goes to show the respect and love they have for their commander.
There was recently a story from Ukraine about a soldier who liberated his home town and went home to see his mom. The town is called Kozacha.

I've watched every movie you've reviewed on this channel previous to the review. This is the first movie I've never watched or heard of, thanks for bringing this movie to my attention. Much appreciated for the recommendation and as always the content/review.
Excellent job guys the commentary was a blast! Gritty is a good way of putting it Mosul has some really nice unpredictable chaotic combat scenes without the (hollywood glorification) and the budget & training was surprisingly great. Would love to see a Mosul 2. As a viewer finding the humor in situations that wouldn’t necessarily be considered funny was realistic also. Can’t say enough good about this one.
Someone should do a video on the LRPs aka LRRPs of Vietnam. These guys deserve some attention, most have never heard of these teams. Not much about them online, one needs to read some books to get a good understanding of what these guys did. They were not strictly reconnaissance which is a common misconception. Would be really cool for someone to put together a well researched video about them. They deserve it, would make a lot of aging vets happy. My father was a LRP 67-68.
this movie wasn't available on stream in my country (for reasons) and i had to track it down by other means. no regrets going thru the hassle. badass movie. its also one of the best war movies i watched the past 10 years.
Hands down my favorite reaction from you guys. This film is so underrated. Not enough gets mentioned about those battle-hardened units from overseas.

Genuinely loved watching “Mosul”; the action was well thought out and complemented the plot whilst seeing how a different culture of allied fighters are portrayed in an attempt to save their families and preserve their war torn country. Great film which was laden with kinetic fury, sadness and pathos.

I has to pause beer and breakdowns to head over to Netflix and watch Mosul. Absolutely bad ass movie. Subtitles didn't mean poop. I was hooked in the opening scene. Very intense movie. Finished it and then headed back to FNG to give a thumbs up and comment. Great review guys!!!

Thank you for recommending this one. Really good movie. Just before the final clearing with his family he was shaking like crazy, and we still did not know it was his family, at first I thought it was because he was now the leader and it was too much. I loved that. And the part with the bartering with Iranian SF, they were essentially doing Green Beret style mission right? training locals for their own little militia. And the argument between him and the commander of swat over the prisoner was so loaded with history and each side nationalism/patriotism. And the dud RPG was like such "aw fuck" moment especially when you realize he gave up their hookah for it lol.
You guys should react to Battle Los Angeles. Which is a guilty pleasure movie of mine. Even though the screenplay isn’t as great as it could have been. Still a good action film though. Lol

@@FNGACADEMY Yeah man it’s got a couple of great actors in it such as Aaron Eckhart and Michelle Rodriguez. They play Army soldiers who fight aliens. It’s based on a real event where the military in like the thirties or forties fired round after round into the air at UFO’s in our air space. lol

Personally I think it's one of the best Vietnam War movies that is not based or focused on the psychological aspect of the war but more on the Battle of Ia Drang itself and the struggle of the 7th Cavalry during their campaign in Vietnam... Anyway I hope you guys the best and keep up the good work 👍...

Watched this movie after watching the vid. Idk how I slept on this. Damn this movie kicks ass. As you and Kurt said u can feel this. In some instances you feel like you're fighting with them.
