  • THIS IS MY SAFETY, SIR.
This week Richard Ryan wrangled up a couple of Army Rangers - Mat Best and Jariko Denman. Denman has deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq 15 times, and he currently runs War Office Productions, advising filmmakers on all-things tactical. Keep an eye out for the film he worked on most recently, "The Outpost" based on the Battle of Kamdesh, where Staff Sergeant Clinton Romesha and Staff Sergeant Ty Carter were both awarded the Medal of Honor. Needless to say, Jariko has some legit experience under his belt.
We're guessing you already know our buddy, Mat. Since they're both Rangers, we obviously had to hit Black Hawk Down. We also caught Ronin and 3 Kings. What movies should we grab next time around?
If you love Jariko as much as we do, we had him on our podcast:

They received the Medal of Honor posthumasly. Randy Shugart's father was at the ceremony and yelled at Clinton that he wasn't good enough to be president. I don't read a lot of books that are all about battles, but I read,"Band of Brothers" and "Blackhawk Down." Mark Bowden who is a journalist went through months and months of getting through the red tape of the military to get what he needed. Ridley Scott directed it and I thought they did a great job of getting the story told even though like any book made into a movie some things are changed because it won't work on screen. Even doing that they still managed to make a movie that captured what the men and Somalis went through. Mark Bowden went to Somalia a year or two after all of this and told some their stories which I wasn't expecting, but was glad. The one thing several Somalis said was that the Americans all looked like Superman because they're equipment made them look bigger than they were. A lot of different factors went into why that happened and I could tell more, but you probably want me to be quiet anyway, but Mike Durant who pioleted the second chopper that went down and also the one that Shugart and Gordon defended for almost an hour against 100s of Somalis until they ran out of bullets, also wrote a book about his experience and instead of killing Durant who had been moved out of the chopper they took him hostage for about 11 days before letting him go. He had broken his back and a femur in his leg and had to go almost two weeks without anything for pain, but aspirin. Both are good books.

So, for reference. I was in C 3/15th Mechanized Infantry out of Ft Steward. I was in Division ready force when Blackhawk down occurred. We were wandering about at about 10pm at night and told we were on alert but not why. They had us sign in and got the the stock room. A major shows up, tells us that our supported unit has gotten involved in a firefight. We will be loading up on a C5 and flying to their location. This of course sounds like a drill. He then proceeds to tell the infantry platoon that the country has 3 diseases in the air, 5 diseases in the ground and 4 in the water system. So, we are never to lay on the ground or drink the water.
They have us zero our weapons and load up on the C5. We are all looking at each other like we are utterly confused. We still have no clue were we are going. The area in the upper part of the C5 is like an airline, when you load 18 men into they have no clue what to do. About halfway across the Atlantic, someone walks into the area and tells us we will be landing in Rome, refueling and our next stop is Cairo. Our final destination is Mogadishu, Somalia. None of us know what this place is or anything about it. Note: this is all pre-internet.
When we finally land in Somalia. They tell us the firefight has been going on for all 18 hours of our flight. We are to get the two bradleys off the back of the plane and duck them in behind some Conexes to get ammo. We pull off the plane.. and the first thing we see is an E-7 running along in Grey Army shorts and T-shirt for his morning run. The entire airport feels like there is people running all over it but no one seems like there is a fire fight going on. There is a bunch of guys exhausted over to the side but that is about it.
What we find out later is that 10th mountain and the rangers are at the stadium and all of these guys are the supply chain. We supported the Rangers going out looking for the 2 dead rangers and the pilot the following 3 nights. Rangers cannot afford to have two of their numbers missing. They just simply will not allow that to happen.
10 days later, two spectre gunships show up, drop leaflets to not be in Adid's compound that evening on the town. They rain down death for 12 hours throughout the night. The compound is 1 brick high in the morning. I am on guard duty at the airport. 6 somalians drag 2 bodies and 1 stretcher upto the front gate.
I left there 6 months later in March.

The M9 pistol is a fine sidearm when it's properly cared for. I joined the Army just when we were transferring from the 1911. The 1911 that I shot was a POS. The "floating barrel" was swinging in the wind and hitting the target was considered lucky.
The Berreta was a God's send. After 20+ years of abuse and crappy armorers who aren't gunsmiths. It's not suprising that the M9 gets a bad rap.
