When we hear some amazing drumming, I think we've all taken the approach of slowing down the (record, tape, Mp3) to better understand what the drummer is playing
But when multiple note values especially the "faster" ones (32nd Notes, 64th Notes etc.) is being used, we need a more effective approach...
We need to associated it with note values we're already familiar with.
This is the Simple but Massively Effective Approach we're using for this lesson!
Danny Carey is a monster drummer and his iconic drum fill from the song "Sober" is a great example of how we can apply this approach to make this crazy fill much easy to Understand and Play!
Don't settle. Don't compromise. Decide what kind of drummer you want to be and develop the Discipline to become that!

The bestest most accurate tutorial of this drum fill in all of YT that every drum aficionado must watch
Thank you! 👊
This is probably my favorite drum fill of all time. It's a classic.
Definitely in the Drum Fill Hall of Fame!
Most accurate recreation of this fill I’ve found on YT, finally am able to understand and play this fill thanks! Another part that’s perplexed me for a long time is the intro to “JellyBelly” by the smashing pumpkins. Jimmy Chamberlain is insane
Mission accomplished! Love me some Jimmy Chamberlin.
Jeff, this was fantastic! I have hacked my way through that song sitting in with bands & felt like a joke not having done the work to figure it out. I love you, brother!
Thank you, brotha! Yeah I think we've all hacked our way through it in our own "unique" ways!
This is the best explanation of this intro fill on UA-cam… BY FAR!!!
Thank you very much, Daniel!
Need to watch this later. This fill always melts my Brain. Never quite been able to nail it.
Oh my god, this makes it sooooo much easier. Thank you
You are welcome!
Hey Jeff! Nice to see you still doing your thang! You were my instructor at MI my last semester, back in 14. Blessings. 🤘🙌
Fantastic! I hope those tools have been helpful! Hard to believe that was 8 years ago!
good gracious ! I never thought I'd understand what he does there till now
Fantastic! Happy to help!
I don’t know when I’ll be able to do this full speed but it won’t be today. You guys are titanic! I can play it 1/2 time
As with everything, it just requires persistent practice! You'll crush it in no time!
Great lesson.
Thank you very much!
Jeff, great job brother. Very informative and straightforward lesson. And you're right, Danny has set the standard.
Thank you, Van! The Danny Standard is a definitely a high bar!
Awesome. I’m late to the party but… I just got an electronic kit after not playing properly for 33 years. I want to cover Sober and this really helps. I’m off to see your other videos!
Never too late to the party. Glad to have you here, Clint!
Excelente manera de enseñar👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you!
Just needed this. Thanks
It's all about "timing" - bad drummer joke
Just found this channel, now I am addicted!!!!!!
Fantastic! Welcome. Very happy you're here!!
Great breakdown/analysis! IMO it’s a lot easier to play the two tom hits with alternate sticking.
Whatever it takes to make it sound the best!
I remember seeing tool at a fest in Sydney. This was after this song had made a huge splash. I reckon they were on around 12.30pm. Times have changed. they were playing the stage with NiN, FNM, Lou Reed, Primus, and just about every huge band of the day though. The 90's were a fantastic time to be a teen.
Just tanks!
You got it, Victor!
Thank you Jeff, I have seen far too many versions of this fill and never understood what happens after the first 2 tom hits. Your version sounds as close to the album as I have heard on the internet.
My pleasure, Daniel! Go crush it!
Absolutely outstanding video, thank you!
My pleasure! Glad it was helpful.
Wow, you made this so clear, now when I listen to the song I know what’s going on. Thanks so much for doing this.
Mission accomplished! Go crush it, Robert!
@@JeffBowders I will now for sure 😎would love this same break down of Forty Six and Two during Danny’s “solo”. I’m sure you know what part I’m referring to.
Absolutely awesome tutorial Jeff. You wouldn't have expected this, but you just earnt a viewer all the way from Pakistan :)
Just started learning the drums. Hats off to you!
Amazing, Umaid! Welcome! Very happy to have you here!
Hi Jeff.... nice stuff as always!
Thank you, Micael!
I LOVE THIS!!! I understand it better! I just started trying to learn this fill and I hope it helps. I think it helped. I LOVE the PDF also! Thank you SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!! I'm a fan dude! Keep 'em coming man!
My pleasure. Enjoy that PDF and go crush this legendary fill!
I really like how you keep the camera angle for one complete repetition and then change it. This is really hepful to understand the sticking pattern but also to see your stickheight and your motions. Really really appreciated!
My pleasure! Glad the camera angles are helpful. As frustrating as a multi camera set up can be, I feel it's worth it and you recognizing that helped verify it!
This fill took me forever to figure out, glad this video validates what I eventually came up with...even slowing the track down was hard to hear exactly what's going on. Yes, the fill going into the next verse is insane too
Fantastic! Yeah, I just may do a lesson on that head-spinning second fill.
Sick
Indeed.
Great!! Personally, I think that a ROUGH one to transcribe! You're the man, Jeff!
Thanks, Adam! It was definitely a "fun" one!
Thank you! I've watched other videos on this and sorta had it down but u made it cleaner n real simple to understand I appreciate what youre doing for the drumming community!!
I'm very happy it was helpful, Joshua. It was a fun fill to breakdown!
You are doing a great job, Sir. I’ve gotten tons of useful ideas and excercises from your videos. Keep it up!
Thank you, Jyri! Very happy you're getting value from them. Much more to come!!
Thank you for this amazing tutorial. Would you by chance know the sticking for the fill at the end of the first chorus?
Thanks, Joel! That just may have to be a "Part 2" to this video!
@@JeffBowders have a found a drumless track for this?
@@megahaze5101 Sadly I have not. I'll post if I do.
Yes! Part 2 of this song for that second epic fill would be much appreciated. Would love to see that. Subscribing 🥰
@@JeffBowders I found a way to do it through an app that uses AI called Moises, isolates every instrument and works damn well
The new drum fill I'll be learning today, thank you 🎉😊
A new fill a day keeps the bass players away 😆
@JeffBowders this fill was harder than I expected. Great awesome fill. Didn't take me long to memorize it but the timing change was a new task for me, can't wait to get this one nailed down :)
Phenomenal explanation. Worked like a charm. Thank you so much! 🤘
Fantastic! Glad it was helpful!
Wow, I don't even know how you figured that out. Very Impressive!
The Amazing Slower Downer to the rescue!
LOVE this fill
It's definitely an essential classic, Ian!
well done, changed my lens for the better, thank you, good job, you have a new fan
Thank you, Colin! I happy to have helped on your journey!
Killer breakdown! Thank you!
My pleasure!
That was awesome! What about the 2nd fill he does? That would be greatly appreciated.
Coming soon...
Insanely useful, Jeff. My band closes with this song fairly often, and it would be nice to pull off this fill in a sharp, precise fashion, and not with the useful blur of sloppy notes I use now!
And then there’s the fill leading into the second verse of “Sober”. … 😀
Usual, not useful.
Thank you, James! Yeah, I've fudged this one up more time than I can count!
Came in looking for a lesson on this fill and the way you've broken it down is excellent and made it much easier to understand what's happening, thank you! Playing it at speed on the other hand is going to require a bit of work on my part! 😁Liked and subbed 👍
Thank you, Graham! Mission accomplished!
I have been having a blast going through your videos. You are an incredible drummer and very gifted teacher!
Fantastic, Daniel! Thank you for checking them out and the kind accolades! I greatly appreciate it. More lessons coming!
This tutorial was really helpful. Thank you 🙏
You got it, Jamie!
Brilliant Jeff, great playing never really checked Danny's playing out as I struggled to get in Tool I will have to have a listen again! Would love to see Neil Peart fills in this series I am sure its on your list!
Thank you, Bhavesh! I understand Tool can be an "acquired" taste, but Danny makes some amazing drumming contributions definitely worth checking out! Any particular Peart fills you have in mind?
Nice chops. Thanks, this helps a lot.
My pleasure, Alan!
This is the only how to video that I have repeated the last week or so. Great work!!!
However, the timing that you’re teaching on the slow parts is different from the full speed version. You’re slow versions come in on the 3 AND. While the actual version and your up to speed version comes in on the 2 “E”. All that aside, this is still a great learning video.
Great! Thank you! Yes, the slower version starts on a different part of the beat because I'm breaking it down in half time. This makes learning rhythmically complicated fills like this easier to understand and learn. Once we get familiar with the sticking and coordination then we're better prepared to play it at the original tempo with the original note values. I hope that helps!
I think Danny came from another planet.
Has to be!
We all came from another planet, Danny probably gets to visit home sometimes. Or they visit him...
This one helped. Thanks!
You got it, Shaun! 👊
Dude I remember you from a DVD in Drum! Magazine from pre-2010. You taught a lesson on how to play “American Idiot”. Great stuff man.
Wow! Great memory, Lucas! Forgot all about that.
Great stuff, thank you so much
You got it, Bjorn!
That was a great breakdown. Big 👍 up, and sub.
I'm glad it was helpful and thank YOU!
Amazing! Thanks!
You got it, Jozsa!
You said it best, the easiest way to learn a fast or complicated rhythm is to slow it down and go from there.
Man, I should just burn my drum set lol I’m never going to be able to get anything like this down.
You can absolutely do this if you really want to. No doubt.
...and the Internet drove me here. Nice lesson Sir.
Every now and then the internet can be a force for good. Happy to have you here!
such a good job. Does anyone know about how the second version of that fill that Danny plays halfway through he song?
Another channel had a breakdown of this same fill. I started to learn it, but in the process, I missed the drum on the downstroke and hit myself in the nuts so hard, my soul left my body.
Anyway... can you do a breakdown of the midpoint fill that goes into the next verse?
Wow that sounds....painful and unfortunate.
Such a cool fill, you've inspired me to start listening to Tool.
You reckon you could break down the fills on Mr. Big's Suffocation Jeff? Specifically the ones at the 15 second mark and the 1:57 mark? It sounds like a pretty classic rock fill, but my ears can't figure out what he's doing
That's a great suggestion! Pat's definitely using some hertas in there but with some variations. I just may have to break this one down soon! Thank you!
In Remo Pinstripe drumheads, it's hard to do the second part of the fill. They produce less rebound I think.
You're absolutely correct, Rodrigo! Also on these Evans G2 heads I have to use more of my wrist to articulate the double rather than depending on the rebound.
@@JeffBowders the Evans G2 produces a similar rebound that Remo Pinstripe i understand then.
Closest interpretation I have seen so far. I wouldn't mind paying for "actual" sheet music, but have seen lots of variation. Any idea where to find Danny's actual sheet music?
I still stand by my opinion that Undertow was their best album.
It is a great album. I do miss Tool "songs".
@@JeffBowders totally. I know it's a cliche at this point but I couldn't get into the last album.
sweet video, got my sub!! one i'd love you to cover is this thing Danny does all the time and i don't really know what the sticking it. does it the song lateralus starting at 6:46 till 6:48, and in many other songs
It's like martial arts technique first then speed will come later. I'm not a drummer yet though lol
Danny with his Polyrhythms and multiple time signatures at the same time, they don't call him the octopus for nothing., He is not from this planet.
Danny is definitely in class all his own!
I forgot.................MORE TOOL PLEASE!
Absolutely!
How about the fill at 2:43 in Vicarious?
Ahhh that's a great one. I'm putting it on the list. Thank you!
damn this is tough to play
With practice you can absolutely do this!
Why is it blurry?
Just make sure your player setting is at 1080p
Enough of the bicep flexing
💪💪
Грандиозно )) Лайк, подписка )) Удачи!
