3:59was clean asf Pls do a tutorial 🥺
I just cant seem to get it lined up. I'm trying to get there, but I am no where near in time. And speed wise- ugh. I need more help with this. Badly. Have to have it learned before spring...going on tour in March!
Great lesson Jeff! I have a huuge question, it is about trying to create drum parts as a drummer for songs I am a drummer that plays in church so I play all the time with a band and I have to be creative and come with parts that fit the song, serve the music, etc.. Often times I get frustrated that even though I practice drumming exercises like grooves for kick control, grooves with different ride variations, studying different sticking patterns to use them as drum fills, and so forfth, I feel like I can't use them the way I would like in songs... I don't know, it feels that when playing with a band or along to a song, you have to focus on the song so my mind is occupied and it becomes harder to do transitions, different variations of the grooves and so forfth..I would say about myself that I sound a little bit too repetitive with my grooves and fills.. any ideas on how I can combat this little anxiety when interpreting songs on drums? I always had this issue and I want to become more free😅 I was thinking about instead of practicing with a metronome my grooves, fills and ideas, to play them maybe with song or drumless loops? Like playing one measure groove, one measure drum fill, starting fills on different parts of the beat, stuff like that... Thanks Jeff!
Nice tutorial. Sadly, I'm approaching the end of a over 40 year Music career. I started in the 8th grade playing school dances, and I never stopped. I'd like to continue playing, but I'm having trouble moving my equipment around due to rheumatoid arthritis. It sucks to get old. I used to carry the hardware bag on my shoulder. Now I'm having trouble lifting it. Any ideas?
Awesomeness
Great job Jeff. Your lessons are very helpful with the way you break them down. In some ways that fill reminds me of the fill Bonham does just before the solo in Black Dog.
Thank you! Absolutely - definitely Bonham vibes!
Is that a real wood on the walls ,behind of you?🤔 ✌🏼😎🤟🏼 If it is lokks really good, and also , should have a ver acoustic sound,, i think so,,?😎
No, not wood. Just some backdrops that I like more than your standard black.
@JeffBowders You caught me in a live concert already..jaja i'm singing iced earth,Metallica, etc covers
Excellent scaffolding again in this lesson. A variation once the basic pattern is mastered would be for the left hand: FT-Tom1-Tom2-FT-Snare-T1-T2-FT (repeat) keeping the right hand the same. Sounds absolutely sick.
Great lesson! I try to tell other drummers that having s fouble bass pedal opens up a whole other advancement in our drumming!
Thanks, Michael! A whole new world indeed!
This is GREAT!!!
Thank you!
Love Alex. Not a double bass pioneer though. You talk waaay too much.
Double bass from Alex vanhalen on electronic drum pads. Come on he's a loser
Another great lesson and 'concept' to take it even futher! 👍
Play shuffles with your feet.
I learned all the Van Halen when it came out
All the DETAIL! I now comprehend several variations of the mysterious "Rosanna Shuffle" ! Jeff your lessons are very helpful and inspiring to me . Please notify me Every TIME
You got it, Kevin! I'm happy these lessons are helpful!
That sounds WAY better than my interpretation which i developed as a kid on my first kit. Its amazing how many ways there are to orchestrate that wrongly. Thank you😂
Haha! Thanks, Kevin. Been there many times myself! 😅
Great video. You really broke down the fill into manageable portions to practice and then put it all together at the end. You also included variations. Excellent scaffolding! Alex Van Halen seems to have been heavily inspired by Bohnam. This fill is almost verbatim taken from a Bohnam fill. I forget what song it was.
Thank you! Absolutely. Bonham would play a single kick version of this often. Amazing!
Your a Beast...thx Jeff😊
Thanks, Thomas! 🦍
Just awesome
Thanks, Nick!
Jeff your instruction is once again is so great on the breakdown of things. Wish I could start instructing like this in my studio. Thanks buddy this was great. An iconic song reference too!
Thank you, Tony! We all have our own methods, I'm sure your's is great!
I love this channel! Thanks Jeff. Keep me NOTIFIED 😮
Will do, Kevin!!
Great lesson, great left-hand workout and fills! hope to see more weakness-related lessons like this in the future!
Thank you! Yes, time to get that left hand out of retirement!
To open UA-cam and see there was a new lesson from Jeff Bowders...well there's something to be thankful for!
Awesome! You got it, Chris!
c'mon
Yeeeep!
That last variation is just stupid
In a good way lol
@@davealaya haha! 😂😂
Always loved this song and this fill. Really great ideas to expand on it. Another of Alex’s fills that I love is the one that sets up the guitar solo in Dreams. Not sure if it’s a herta with the hands or if he’s bringing the feet in as well. Tough to hear on those Simmons pads. Thanks for this lesson, Jeff. Alex is the reason I started playing drums. I think he’s still way underrated.
That's a great idea, Eric! If I can figure it out I'll do a lesson on it. Thank you!
Great lesson as per usual!
Thank you!
Awesomeness brother, great job
Thanks, Tim! 🙏
Nice. Great to see your subscriber count really coming up. Happy Thanksgiving.
Thank you, thank you! Happy Turkey Day! I need to check out the studio!
@ Would love to get your thoughts on Parts One and Two of Linear Squared I just released. If you get some time.
@@LarryLondonDrummer Absolutely. We'll be up next month.
Great. Vinnie Appice used to play this fill.
Absolutely! And his brother too.
As always, wonderfully explained and thought out. Thank you so much - off you my drum room! 😊
You got it, Corey! Go crush it!
Solid..always wondered how he played that fill
@@psalmsurfer1 yes! Matt is the master of solid and sophisticated drumming indeed!
Good lesson. Thanks. Not as difficult as U initially thought
That's always a pleasant surprise!
Riley is a msster teacher in the Jazz space
Something cool u could use on a rock shuffle mess with for rock.. this is Jazz but can be applied and fun to mes around with to make stuff up ua-cam.com/video/wKlQxc1eGLs/v-deo.htmlsi=UVnVMeSRLEgfls6I
The riff just bites so hard
At 2:43 it’s so cool when the song gets really heavy all of a sudden
Heck ya! Can’t believe I found this! I’m going to learn it
Well done😊
Thank you, Thomas!
I met Vinnie. Super chill humble dude in real life. Super Monster behind the drums!!! Thanks for this breakdown.
Living Legend!
Jeff, what program do you recommend for writing drumming stuff(grooves, exercises) I have soo many exercises ideas that incorporate grooves and fills, starting the fills on different beats and so forfth.. Some stuff get's complicated and it would be much helpfull if I've had it written down, and I'm wondering in what program would you suggest I could write my ideas..? Thanks soo much Jeff!
There is few notation software options for you. I use Sibelius. But I think there is free version of Musescore that could help you get your ideas down. I also have pads and pads full of practice ideas that I've written down throughout the years, which is always a fun resource to return to!
Muito bom 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Thank you!
What metronome app are you using, please? Nice class. Thanks
It’s called PolyNome which is only available for Apple devices. Its amazing. Glad you enjoyed the lesson! 👊🏻
Kudos for (unlike seemingly everyone else’s interpretation) getting the point across that there is no pause after the snare in the five note groupings. However, I think trying to make this conform to a traditional bar of 4/4 has been throwing everyone off. I think this is simply a 13/16 pattern. Evenly spaced 16ths all the way through. SKKKKSKKKKSKK = one bar of 13/16 for three bars Then the 4th bar is 12/16 SKKSKKSKKSKK After listening on half speed to the recorded version numerous times I am pretty confident with this way of approaching the intro. Scott himself seems to have wrestled with interpreting what he did, as I read in an interview once. But, to me, treating the evenly-spaced groupings of 5+5+3 as a 13/16 pattern makes the most sense in terms of what was played. It also means the snare hits would not exactly match the hits in a traditional string of the 8th notes SKKSKKSK in a 4/4 bar which is fine by me! It’s what makes it totally unique and quirky. Trying to make it conform to a traditional 8th notes grid with a 5:3 + 5:3 + 3:2 polyrhythmic approach would mean that the notes in that last 3:2 triplet grouping would be spaced further/played slightly slower than the two preceding 5:3 quintuplet groupings. Which doesn’t feel like the case in the opening measure of the recorded version of painkiller that I’ve reviewed many times at half-speed. Making everything straight 16ths in a measure of 13/16 permits all those 13 consecutive notes to have the same exact spacing.
Thanks! Yes, technically 13/16 will work. I'm a big fan of 4/4 which is why I presented it this way.

I see you're playing your rack toms mounted on cymbal stands which allows them to move. Do you do that because having them mounted on the bass drum decreases the resonance of a freely moving tom? Does one option outweigh the other, or is it just personal choice? Those are some badass sounding drums by the way.
I mainly have them mounted on stands to limit the restrictions of where I can place them. Generally I like to have my bass drum a bit more to the right but I want my toms to stay in a more traditional position. Having them on stands allows me to do that. I know sonically some people will make the argument that mounting toms on a bass drum will some how compromise the integrity of the tone - and sure that's possible, but honestly not enough for me to be concerned about. If you have a well made drum, with some good heads tuned decently and (most importantly) you play it with intention, just about any drum will sound good, regardless what mounting system is used. Hopefully this helps!
@@JeffBowders Thanks for the reply, Jeff.
Nailed it! Awesome job man!
Thanks Kyle! You’re a beast in your own right. 👊🏻
Rad lesson. I checked out the drum discipline academy site. Would you recommend starting with you there?
Definitely. Lots of content there. The Deconstructing Double Bass Inner Circle is the most in-depth and comprehensive. Let me know if you want to learn more about it.
