It would be great to see what your editing tools and process looks like in part 3. I imagine you capture hours of footage on a trip that you have to edit down to a short, concise video. I always find that part so daunting.
Awesome thanks Lucas. Always wonder about the gear so it’s great to see. Would love to see a vid on the editing process / software you use etc. Also “best practice” GoPro settings for skiing would be mint ! Thanks man
Hey Lucas, I live in Colorado and was wondering if you could spend more time during the season in Colorado in mountains like Breckenridge, vail, winter park
Been waiting for this one. About to make the action camera plunge to add to my A7Siii and drones. Debating on waiting to see the new GoPro Max 2 coming out.
Thanks for the great content. I noticed you switched from your helmet 360 camera to a different camera to show the reality of the snowbird shot 15 line..That was sick BTW. Great scott also didn't really translate well in a 360 camera. Im planning on buying a camera that shows a more realistic perspective of the skiing. The 360 camera does a great job of filming a beatiful distorted scene and telling a general story, but seems to lack context on the actual ski run and how aggressive you are skiing it. Do you think this is fair? Is it possible to edit the 360 frame with settings, or should I stick to a traditional action camera setup?
Appreciate this video! I’m upgrading to Hero 12 this year, and had not really considered the Max. Great stuff. I’m trying to up my ski video game and doing a lot of follow cam work with my little rippers.
Awesome video! Enduro batteries are game changers from the original gopro. I didn't have the camera shut off once on me, while skiing an entire run. Highly recommend the enduros!
I am curios about your thoughts between this and the insta360 x3 i am wanting to get a 360 cam and i dont know if the max or x3 is better. do you have any thoughts on this? also i am a begining editor and i dont have a whole bunch of time for editing so also how long does it take to reframe these shots for each video? thank! love the content keep it up!
I don’t see GP Boom on the site. Where did you purchase it? Did you take the two piece and remove one of the arms because I don’t see the single arm on the website.
i was wondering whether the gopro max has the same field of view / same filming quality etc as a regular go pro (such as the go pro hero 11 black) with the max lens mod?
No it does not. The Max is still significantly wider than the hero 11 + max lens mod. Now the new hero 12 + max lens mod 2.0 in hyperview is very close to the FOV you can get with the max.
Great video Lucas! I'm getting ready to purchase the GoPro Maxx before my son and I head out to Utah to shred in December. Would really like to see a video on your settings and editing. Thanks!
Great stuff. Love your ski videos! Do you ever worry about falling and breaking the non GoPro camera? I know you're a great skier so maybe you don't think about falling, but I'm curious about the durability of non-gopro cameras
thanks dave! i dont actively worry about it to be honest. if i take a bad fall, i do check on the gear to make sure its okay but for the most part - its always been fine. sometimes, i will pack a shirt in there with the camera for extra padding.
I remember you messing with backpacks and I am not sure what that was all about.. I have thought about getting a GoPro.. It sounds like that 360 is what I would want.. I like the footage where I can see people's skis.. I am always checking out what skis people are on;)
Yo Lucas, I have the GoPro Hero 9 and most trips, I try to record a lot but I keep getting sd card error and my videos continue to get corrupted/formatted . Any chance you ran into this problem and if you did, how did you resolve it bc last szn I lost a lot of good footage.
yo! i havent had that happen to me, but its definitely something people experience. i would recommend these 3 things: 1. make sure your SD card is all the way inserted (im sure it is but just make sure) 2. FORMAT the SD card after everytime you offload the footage 3. if it still gives you the error, my bet would be that your SD card write speed is too slow for the resolution/framerate you are shooting. might need to upgrade the SD card!
Thanks for the quick feedback, I'm thinking it's #3. I usually shoot in high resolution for a whole run so that could 100% be the reason. @@LucasCatania17
it sounds like you've already been to some of the best! you could also try out brighton/solitude in big cottonwood or snowbasin/powder mtn in northern utah.
Awesome to see this side of the vlogs! The 360 cam for skiing is just the best! A little more editing but so so worth it for how the footage looks. Im very confused why gopro hasn't made a new max?
Several people I’ve talked to have recommended the R6. I know there’s an R6 Mark ii as well. You mentioned you like the 24-70 lens. I know 24-105 is also popular. For ski video - are the some advantages of the 24-70 over the 24-105?
the 24-105 is a great lens! the downside to the 24-105 is that its lowest aperture is f/4 where the 24-70 can go down to f/2.8. the lower aperture makes it so the background can get super "blurry" ill say. for most people, you probably wouldn't notice the difference, but i just like that look for my broll shots!
just saw that Canon is releasing a 24-105 2.8 lens. Looks like a beast of a lens for weight, size, and price ... but hits a pretty great range!@@LucasCatania17
Thx Lucas - great callout on the challenges with "getting the shot" and not pointing at your toes or the clouds when trying to set a Hero angle. Would you consider doing a "settings" video for Heros? You may have one already and I should look up but currently on the Hero 10 and just looking to have a couple presets to get me close when skiing or handing the gear over to a family member so they could just hit record and have a good chance of being able to capture the shots?
thanks scott. great points. i did make one last year that is centered around the hero 10 actually, but im definitely down to do an updated one for this year! could also tailor it towards the situation you talked about!
@@LucasCatania17 Thank You! I went back and bookmarked that video and will watch it over lunch! Stuck in the mid-west I really appreciate your documenting your experiences. What an epic year you had (great season recap video you put together too) and looking forward to going on this journey with you again this winter.
@@LucasCatania17 thanks, checked it out. Just bought a Sony A6600 and purchased a Nanuk case to protect it skiing. You're brave not keeping the camera in a hard case. I'm not sure I'll be able to sit in the chair keeping it in the container...
there's actually no fisheye or distortion with how i reframe my headcam. if there was, my skis would look stretched out or the trees would bend as they get to the edge of the frame.
i love talking about camera gear! so stoked to use the new cameras this winter.
don't forget about the livestream tonight at 6pm MST!

i would just get the insta360 then! much more user friendly.
For someone just starting out and wanting to record views and action shots while riding, if you had to pick one, Hero12 w/ max lens, or Max?
Hero 12 + max lens mod 2.0!
