Bakersfield is the the south end of California's Central Valley. It's an area of farming and oil fields. The Bakersfield sound started in the '50s going back to basics and blending in early rock and Tejano music. Nashville at the time had moved more to big city, big money, big orchestra music and was losing its country roots. Honky tonks are working man bars with loud, lively music.
Dwight is one of the great traditional artists who is surprisingly underrated in modern country circles. Has an excellent catalog that spans southern country style as a whole. Great artist to explore, moody and expressive, to rowdy and raucous. And one of the true gentlemen when it comes to his fans.
Dwight Yoakam is an iconic singer and songwriter, and he's been one of my all-time favorites since you were knee high to a grasshopper, Sebs. He also plays a great movie villain. The Streets of Bakersfield with Buck Owens is a fun song and I Sang Dixie -- based his real-life encounter with a dying man in Los Angeles -- is touching and terrific. Guitars, Cadillacs is another great song.
His skin tight, boot cut jeans were very popular, as you noticed. Really talented artist. I’m hoping to talk you into hearing a band called the Mavericks, a song called Oh What a Thrill or Ain’t That A Crying Shame. The lead singer is SO good, he just pulls you in like no one else. Please, please give them a listen..I promise you won’t regret it. Great reaction to Dwight as well Seb. Peace. ❤
There’s a video of Dwight, Keith Urban and the Brothers Osborne on Keith’s channel of one of Dwight’s hits, Fast As You. The guitar solos….. wow!! You need to hear it Sebs with your love, as well as our love too, of the guitar. And yes, very memorable characters in SlingBlade, Panic Room and others. ♥️
In terms of stage moves Dwight was often called the Elvis of Country. His moves weren't copies but they were sexy. Check out the live performance of his up-tempo hit, "Guitars and Cadillacs". It's the very definition of Dwight Yoakam.
Flaco Jimenez performed with the Texas Tornados, an American Tejano supergroup, that also included Augie Meyers, Doug Sahm, and Freddy Fender. It another good rabbit hole to go down with songs such as (Hey Baby) Que Pasó?, Who Were You Thinkin' Of, Adios Mexico, Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone, etc.
Flaco Jimenez on that accordion really added just the right amount of spice to that song. You should checkout The Streets of Bakersfield by Dwight Yoakam and Buck Owens.
Please consider doing a reaction to Dwight and Buck Owens performing "The Streets of Bakersfield". I know you'll love it. Take the word of an 80 year old man. Us old dudes know! Lol Hopefully you'll do the video version. Thank you. Love the channel.
I absolutely love Dwight!! I've been a fan from the beginning and I'm officially an old metal head party chick! LOL... Dwight Yoakam is phenomenally gifted and you will see if you do the deep dive down the rabbit hole! My favs from him are "Nothing", "A Thousand Miles From Nowhere", "Ain't That Lonely Yet", "Streets of Bakersfield", "Fast as You". I would have loved to see him live in concert! Thank so much Sebs!!
The song is a great mix of rockabilly and Conjunto music. Flaco is the best accordion play in the Mexican style. He was born and raised in San Antonio. Dwight Yoakum was born in Kentucky and grew up in Columbus, Ohio. Have been a fan of his since his first record. Been a fan of Flaco since I heard him on the great Ry Cooder album Chicken Skin Music from 1976. Great reaction video. Go see Dwight Yoakum sometime. He puts on a great show.
This guy is smokey beer spilling bar genius. Where does he buy his jeans!!!! Loved this guy's music for years. Entertaining from front row to last seat in the venue
YEAH he's awesome!!! I love his music ... so inspired by "The Bakersfield Sound" and Buck Owens. And I love Flaco who was once a part of the great Texas Tornados.
I saw him live in Switzerland somewhere, I think it was maybe in Gstaad. It was so so awesome! He’s so great! I’ve always loved Dwight. That perfect voice!!! ❤
Absolutely love, love Dwight. I began listening to him for the first time in 1991. Me, not a country (fiend) lol 😅 in that day and time, but a new guy I was hanging out with popped in a CD and out come a voice that was/is magical!! Another great artist that also come out this same time is the best new Female Country Artist of all time is Patty Loveless. She did several duets with Mr. Vince Gill, talk about amazing! One tune these two new artist's sing together is called: (Pocket Full of Gold!) Also, if you want to react to another Dwight song, I love the one he sings called: "Since I Started Drinking Again!" Thank you Seb, for bring all of us a variety of Masterful Music!!!
Another great performance on Austin City Limits if I remember right. Flaco is a Legendary accordionist. Check out Dwight's "A Thousand Miles From Nowhere".
Sebs, your requestors have immaculate taste in music! I’m a rocker through and through, but I will listen to Dwight Yoakum any day. Was lucky enough to see him at Massey Hall in Toronto for that 1st album tour and it was an amazing show. A good actor, too!
Many, many years ago, my aunt, God rest her soul, introduced me to country through Dwight Yoakam. Listen to 1000 miles from nowhere, that is a great song. And another great song is “Fast as You”, yeah you can’t go wrong with Dwight Yoakam.
Dwight was his own niche in country music. You could group very few other artists (Lyle Lovett, a few others) in with him because his sound and style were different from the mainstream Clint Blacks and George Straits of the time.
Thanks for reviewing Dwight Yoakam. He was popular in the 90s and had a big following. I saw him perform live at a local festival in Chgo. and I was blown away. Some of his rockabilly songs are quite good, too. I grew up on 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s music, etc. and appreciate most genres. This was very good to watch (although I did not know the dark theme of the song, either 😮).
EPIC. LEGEND. Keep Going!!!! Thousand Miles from Nowhere Suspicious Minds (Elvis cover) Ain’t That Lonely Yet ***He Sang Dixie - Dwight wrote after he and his brother witnessed a murder on the streets in LA.
Dwight's duet with Buck Owens of "Streets Of Bakersfield" became a #1 hit and revived Buck's (better known at the time as a host of Hee Haw) recording career. "A Thousand Miles From Nowhere" and "Guitars, Cadillacs" were also hits for Dwight.
1st time I heard Dwight & I was hooked. “Two Doors Down” is another good one along with some others mentioned. His cover of “ Suspicious Mind”is super! Also “ The Heart That You Own”. He went thru a Rockabilly stage early on, but my preference is his later stuff. Great lyrics & stories. I have every album he’s ever done!!!
I love the accordion so much, my brother took lessons on it when we were young and I learned how to play El Primo so got the idea of howto use both hands at once. You always hear the accordion being played, such a distinctive sound.
"I'm Not That Lonely Yet" is my favorite Yoakam song and a song he received a Grammy for. That is Flaco Jiménez on the accordion I believe. BTW Dwight also has delved into acting. He was in this little movie called Sling Blade. He received the Premiere Performance Award at the 57th Annual Motion Picture Club Awards for his role as Doyle Hargraves in Sling Blade (1996) Just a side note,I think maybe Dwight set the trend for skinny jeans back in the day
I am going to see him in concert at the end of this month. Dwight is dangerously underrated, except by those in the know! Please check out his cover of Elvis' Suspicious Minds, it is so good that it almost made me forget the King's!
I've been a fan of Dwight Yoakam since forever! I love all of his music! Brilliant songwriter also. He is a very good actor as well. He and Buck Owens were great friends and were part of the "Bakersfield Sound" way back when. His song "Fast As You" was a sort of rocking/country tune, and is one of my favorites. Good reaction!
While Trucking we would pick up a load out of Bakersfield, and it was so Western that people would use the old wood wagon wheels to line their yards. Beautiful
Little Sister is a great song. I got to see him live in Des Moines IA when my cousin opened for him. It was just him and a multi-instrumentalist playing fiddle and mandolin. He was so professional!
Guitars and Cadillacs!! 1000 miles from nowhere!!!
My 2 favorites
Great songs
Right on… ✨
Yes…G&C!
Dwight Yoakam is the bomb. One of the best ever. So many hits to mention. Couple of my favorites are "Streets of Bakersfield" and "I Sang Dixie".

You are so right!
My absolute favorite. Bought the CD & Im not a country fan so much.
Love that one
Right. Glad you mentioned that song, definitely one of DW's best.
He's built like a cowboy, wide at the shoulders and narrow at the hips. He is an amazing artist and a very good actor as well.
Dwight Yoakum played the awful stepdad, Doyle, in the movie Sling Blade with Billy Bob Thornton.
Great film. John Ritter's performance was insanely good.
Good/ sad movie. One of my favorites of all time. Seen Dwight Yoakam and Willie Nelson in Chattanooga Tennessee about two years ago maybe three? FAN!
Was also one of the criminals in Panic Room with Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart.
That whole movie gave me chills because it was just like my home town
@@crystalwood4502 I forgot about that!

Dwight’s cover of heartaches by the number and ring of fire are phenomenal! There is nothing he cannot sing❤

Please do more Dwight Yoakam from this concert, so many good songs.
I’m not Austrian but I like BACH. I’m not country but I like Dwight and Steve Earle.
Every time I hear Dwight I end up listening to him for days!

I can listen to Dwight all day, every day. Shout out to Pete Anderson, the lead guitarist and album producer for most of Dwight's catalog.
May I suggest Guitars And Cadillacs or A Thousand Miles From Nowhere, by Dwight.
I was going to suggest exactly these 2 songs. Might I add "Fast as You" and "Cadillac Ranch"
Great suggestions
