Buck developed the Bakersfield sound and was Dwight's idol so it was great that they recorded together later. Buck had many hits over the years and hosted the weekly show Hee Haw with another country legend Roy Clark. Buck's red white and blue guitar is iconic.
Buck was an early part of The Bakersfield sound but he didn’t invent it. He was an ingredient no doubt but it was already starting to develop when Buck started playing
Britt, Buck Owens and Merle Haggard are from Bakersfield, CA. Buck was Dwight’s biggest hero and inspiration and his sound is known as “The Bakersfield Sound”
That sound ur hearing is a Mexican-style known as 'Norteño'. Buck Owen picked it up and he imbued it with Country which was later called the "Bakersfield Sound". In fact, world-renowned accordian Godfather, Flaco Jimenez, was brought in to play the accordian. Jimenez also plays on some other Dwight Yokum releases. Jimenez, a star on his own, was a member of the Super Group, The Texas Tornados, a Tex-Mex group formed in San Antonio by prominent recording artist Freddy Fender, Doug Sahm, Augie Myers and Flaco. U should give "Mendecino", "Adios Mexico" or any of their other songs a shot.
The first instrument, a short guitar, was a mandolin, my dad played. Yes, a accordian reminds me of a happy piano, always foot taping music. Peace from Northern Michigan.
Dwight is a Treasure…one of a kind and a must discover all his flavors. His video “Fast as You”….hot, hot, hot. But, anything from his Austin City Limits performance is a must as well.
I lived in Bakersfield when this song came out. We used to go down to the two local bars, Buds and Trouts; and dance to this. To this day, I still love it. My dad went to school with Merle Haggard at Beardsley Elementary way back when. Bakersfield is a trip!!!! Now, back to the reaction.
Going down the Dwight Yoakam rabbit hole - it is some wonderful country music with all that twang! Check Guitars, Cadillacs and Hillbilly Women, Thousand Miles from Nowhere, and Ain't That Lonely Yet. Plus so many other good ones!
The instrument sounds are "The Bakersfield sound". Buck was one of the people who hit it big in the '60's. Dwight kind of brought it back during the '80's. Dwight Yokum (Yo Come) does one of my favorite songs ever!! Check out the song "It Won't Hurt".
Dwight grew up listening to Buck and hoping some day to meet his idol. He brought Buck back to the forefront of country music where he belonged. They became close friends. They have more songs together. Dwight is also a great actor. In Sling Blade he was a mean S.O.B. still was amazing
One of my favorite Dwight songs. Dwight gets to sing with one of his heroes, the amazing Buck Owens. And yes their voices are fantastic together and they have similar singing styles and there is definitely a bit of Tex-Mex influence here with the accordion and the beat. In real life, Buck's mother brought him with her to Bakersfield California. They were essentially homeless for a bit and slept in railroad box cars. Ultimately he ended up being so popular and he had his own club there which was a huge deal. And then when he finally started touring, his opening act Red Simpson took over, and I love Red Simpson as well, he specializes in trucking music. He too has a song that tributes Buck.
You nailed it about Dwight! He's a California guy and came up listening to California Country, which was centered around Bakersfield. Buck was largely credited with developing that sound. Neither could be ignored by mainstream country but neither was embraced by it either. Dwight always spoke highly of Buck and then they eventually recorded together. Dwight sang at Buck's funeral - very touching vid on youtube. BTW, Dwight is a very good actor and has been in several things you've probably seen - biggest role was probably in SlingBlade with Billy Bob Thornton.
Dwight David Yoakam is an American singer-songwriter, actor, and film director. He first achieved mainstream attention in 1986 with the release of his debut album Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc.. Yoakam had considerable success throughout the late 1980s onward, with a total of ten studio albums for Reprise Records. Wikipedia Born: 1956 (age 66 years), Pikeville, KY Nationality: American Height: 6′ 0″ Parents: David Yoakam, Ruth Ann Yoakam
I grew up on Buck Owens music from Hee Haw. Dwight's music is awesome put whatever ever label you want good music is just good music. Britt you're doing an amazing job 💙
Love this reaction. I grew up listening to Buck Owens (parents were big fans) I was always a big fan of Dwight's. It was great when Dwight brought attention back back to Buck's music late in his career.
The accordian player is Fito olivarez, atejano music legend,Dwight and Buck reached out to him and he agreed as long as he played with a Tejano flair, mariachi sound is different and doesnt involve accordians.
My wife of 19 years calls me hillbilly, she is a Latina who actually grew up in Honduras and we always listen to this and others of Dwight's catalog because of the blending he does lol love him! RIP Buck ❤
Buck Owens is a legend. In fact, he was actually a big influence on The Beatles. They did a version of his song "Act Naturally" with Ringo Starr singing lead that is so cool. You should check out both versions.
In the '70s, there were 2 major types of country music... Nashville sound, and Bakersfield Sound... "Nashville" was led by Chet Atkins, while "Bakersfield" was led by Buck Owens... Also helps explain the term "Country and Western"... "Outlaw" country, led by Waylon Jennings, evolved from the "Nashville" sound, but, as the name suggests, they "Broke all the Rules" ... I remember there were a lot of rumors and speculation that Dwight Yoakam was, in fact, the illegitimate son of Buck Owens, but that was NOT true... Buck was, however a HUGE influence on Dwight, and they were close friends....
Buck Owens, from Texas (born in Sherman) is a country music icon with his band The Buckaroos. His career took a hit when his icon guitarist, Don Rich died in a motorcycle accident. Dwight helped renew his music career and Hee Haw kept his name relative. Very talented man. As a kid I got to meet him at autograph signing in Arlington, Tx.
That dance move that Dwight Yoakam was doing as he kind of swivels across the stage is a straight-up Elvis Presley move. In fact, I saw something on TV where Austin Butler was explaining how he really had to work hard to learn that one for his role in the movie, and he was showing the host how to do it and it turns out not to be as easy as you would think. At least for a lot of people.
Yay... I am so glad you got to this one!!! I love it so much. Such a wonderful friendship developed with these two. Dwight met his hero.. and it did not disappoint! A real grew between the two and they really enjoyed each other! Oh and also becuz this song kicks. I never tire of it... it's infectious with how fun it is. 🥰
Buck Owens was a country legend, who had the original version of this song. He also sang "Act Naturally," which was covered by Ringo Starr and the Beatles. Buck and Ringo did a video duet of that song as well.
Dwight was a huge fan of Tejano music star Flaco Jimenez so he asked him to play the accordion on this song when they recorded it. A few years ago we saw Dwight at Floore’s Country Store in Helotes, TX (where I lived) and he had Flaco come out on stage for this song. Flaco was late 80’s and could barely walk but DAMN he rocked that accordion!
The accordion player, Flaco Jimenez, has won six Grammy Awards. He has performed with Bob Dylan, Dr John, and Ry Cooder. He also played on The Rolling Stones album,”Voodoo Lounge.” He also appeared in the Woody Allen movie “Picking Up the Pieces.” A well known name to musicians, but not well known to the general public.
No one was a bigger country star in the 60’s and early 70’s. Buck was a legend and superstar. He retired in ‘74 when he lost his “right arm”, dangerous Don Rich in a motorcycle accident.
To answer two of yuor questions, yes, the bright sound dancing around is from an accordion. Also, the long part with strings is called the neck. Love you reactions: please kept them coming.
It's funny that when you mentioned Buck Owens what popped into my head was something I heard years ago, if I had Charlie's Pride and Johnny's Cash I wouldn't have a Buck Owens.
He's awesome. Dwight was one of my favorite concerts and I barely knew him and had been to tons of superstar concerts . Dwight's was the loudest and funnest
FLACO JIMENEZ is a Very famous ACCORDIAN PLAYER. He has played a couple of Songs with Dwight Yoakum, THE MAVERICKS AND FREDDY FENDER AS WELL as many others. He doesnt play as much anymore but he rocks. Flaco also made a fan from a Holander, DWAYNE who became famous here in Mexico and many other countries too! He learned to play the accordion because his dad bought a record of Flaco in Holand.
Dwight started in punk music and then moved to traditional country with a modern sound in the 90s. He does have a unique flair and tight jeans are his style. His first album was Guitars Cadillacs and Hillbilly Music - which is a great song. Country music producers wanted him to not use the term hillbilly music, but it became a top selling record and Dwight is still performing today - over 30 years later.
I'm so glad you liked this and I had no idea you already did Dwight! Now I have to go search for that, LOL. On this one, they literally remind me of father and son singing together!
Great song, fun (and sensible!) reactions. Lots of good info in the comments about music history and influences too. I’d add only that part of what Dwight brought to country was 1) a return to the workingman/Bakersfield sound, 2) sex appeal (those jeans), 3) some really hard, driving, almost punk-rock-like rhythm. His lead guitarist at the time (whose name I can’t remember at the moment) was a big part of his sound.
Had the experience of working for Buck at his concert hall in Bakersfield when he was still alive. Kind of a weird guy, but VERY nice and treated everyone with respect if you treated him the same. I was always that punk rock/metal head type, but I knew sound and stage tech and while country music wasn't my lane at all I learned a lot of how to look at music that I didn't like and see the skill and technique that these artists do in their music is amazing. Also you aren't he first nor will you be the last to notice Dwight and his jeans.
Dwight is my all time favorite country artist! I have seen him perform twice and have a picture of him hanging in my house! I am obsessed with this man! That squeak as you call it is called "bending notes" here in Texas!!! Great reaction and please more Dwight!!! You should react to his whimsical song "Waterfall" captured in the the Live Room but you will need to have the lyrics pulled up! I listen to it every day!
Most appealing persona of any reaction video very expressive and cute. You nailed it with Dwight being spicy, truly a unique performer and Buck was an absolute legend.
🎼🔥🎼🔥🎼🔥🎼🔥🎼 .. more Dwight !!! more Dwight !!! ... more Dwight !!! (( 2 Doors Down - A Thousand Miles From Nowhere - Guitars & Cadillacs - Honkytonk Man ))
Yes that was the instrument you heard , Buck Owens, made a lot of great country songs, like it's Crying Time AGAIN, a great song Dwight Yoakum, has a lot of great country songs also one of them I wish you would react to is "THIS HEART THAT YOU OWN" a great song, thanks Britt, for a great song reaction good job.
Dwight Yoakum got popular in the 80s, inspired by songs he loved by his childhood idols. this one he duets with one of them, Buck Owens. But unlike the original, for this version Dwight brought in Mexican sounds, which makes sense given the strong Mex influences in Bakersfield and the Central Valley part of California. that's what you heard and described as Mariachi
Yes It's an Accordion he does a lot of stuff with it. He and Buck are the model "Bakersfield Country" artist it a sound that only comes from that area. the newest artist to do it is Jon Pardi who I was not impressed with when I used to see him in Nashville and he would get up and sing with bands I played drums for, but in the last year I have become a huge fan of his original music. Check out Old Times by Jon Pardi it's a great song!!
Dwight doing "Fast as You"... any vid, but the best one is at Stagecoach Festival as a guest with Keith Urban-Nicole Kidman's hub- & Brothers Johnson (one was hammered) and all super-stoked that The Yoke was 'guesting'... It' very loose, rock n bluesy. Oh, & the swag on Dwight does not disappoint.
I remember seeing both Dwight and Buck on live television. Not sure, but I believe they were singing this song. Dwight was doing his usual dancing and swinging his guitar to and fro. Buck, an elderly gentleman, was nervous and afraid of being struck by the guitar. During the performance I heard Buck say, "Don't you hit me with that guitar." Dwight was silent and continued his moves.
Buck had already retired, when Dwight ask him, to record that song with him. It became Dwights first Number One Hit. :) Years before, Buck already recordet "Streets of Bakersfield" solo... and nobody cared. ;) The Accordeon is played by Flaco Jimenez, a famos Accordeon-Player in Tex-Mex-Music. :)
Love Dwight Yoakum! Buck Owens was big back then. We watched HeeHaw every week because of the great talent they showcased and the corny jokes 😎👵🏼☮️💜 PDC club member here!! I agree with you about Dwight’s pants, they always fit him so well ☺️
welcome to south texas darlin, that sound? That is Tejano music meets country. I lived in Texas for three years, seven miles from mexico. That is the sound of Country and Mexican folk and it make you wanna dance. I used to go to a bar in McCallen Texas called the Tejano saloon and what a trip that was... Mostly Mexican people, but they knew how to dress and how to dance!
I would have been shocked Brett, if you didn't like that. Buck, n, Dwight were Brilliant together. Also best friends. Dwight got Buck out of retirement, to record Bakers field. That says a lot. Dwight is still as good as ever. He is back touring again, Such a lovely man. Multitalented, just love his style of acting too. Full Package really. Thank you Britt. Love from ❤🇮🇪💚🍀
Mexican Norteño music was greatly influenced by German emigration in the early 1800's. All that music going on has it's roots in oom pah pah German music. A very lively blend of cultures.
Dwight is a fellow Kentuckian and we tend to have a nasal twang in our speech and singing. Recommend his song "It only hurts me when I cry". Great performer and songwriter.
One of the reasons that the "Bakersfield sound" was different for its mix of culture and technology. Haggard and Owens represented the Oakie sound as many of them moved to farming towns in Californias central valley during the depression/ dust bowl. They brought the country sound that mixed with Mexican influenced music just when electric instruments were really getting popular. Mix country, mariachi, electric instruments and tough times....voila! Bakersfield sound.
This is ICONIC Bakersfield county music! This will last forever. Bakersfield was the destination of Route 66. The Graceland of the dust bowl. This is what John Steinbeck wrote about in The Grapes of Wrath. THIS IS AMERICAN HISTORY!
The small guitar is actually an electric mandolin.
Britt, Buck Owens and Merle Haggard are from Bakersfield, CA. Buck was Dwight’s biggest hero and inspiration and his sound is known as “The Bakersfield Sound”
Buck owns grew up in Bakersfield Dwight is from Pikeville KY
Dwight is not only a great singer, he is also a fantastic actor!!
He was great in “ Slingblade”
Terrible singer
@@paulf4358 Your opinion.
Britt:
You need to watch Dwight sing in honor at Buck's funeral.
Beautiful heartfelt respect for a dear friend!
Every kid who grew up in the 70s no matter what style music you listened to you knew who Buck Owens was because of Hee Haw.
He was grinning!
Grew up on Hee Haw, we cooked cheap steaks on the grill after working in the garage or in the yard and sat down to watch it every Saturday night,
I remember Buck from his TV show.before Hee Haw even existed
Wow! Both Buck and Dwight are country ICONS. So glad you are discovering them. Dwight is one of my favorites!
Dwight Yoakam is one of my all-time favorites. Buck Owens was Dwight Yoakam's idol and inspiration, hero as it were.
That sound ur hearing is a Mexican-style known as 'Norteño'. Buck Owen picked it up and he imbued it with Country which was later called the "Bakersfield Sound".

Awe, I love to listen to Freddy Fender! Great suggestion 👍
Then you,@@mamaflush9945, have great musical taste
Oh my gosh, yes!! "Buenos Nochas from a Lonely Room" on Austin City Limits is frickin' incredible!

The breadth of your musical tastes is truly impressive.
One of my favorite Dwight songs. Dwight gets to sing with one of his heroes, the amazing Buck Owens. And yes their voices are fantastic together and they have similar singing styles and there is definitely a bit of Tex-Mex influence here with the accordion and the beat.

Buck Owens singing Together Again with Don Rich’s harmony amazing.

As someone who lives in Bakersfield this song is a perfect marriage of the 2 major culture that live here. Country folk and Mexican folk.

Love this song and Buck Owens is one of all time great of county and so is Dwight and the small guitar is a Mandolin . love the videos
One of my fave pieces by Dwight is his Thousand Miles (from nowhere) - it's got a good bluesy sound
Yes! Let's go down the Dwight Yoakam rabbit hole. Can't go wrong with " A thousand miles from nowhere"
You need to hear Dwight do "Purple Rain". He was so saddened by Prince passing he worked it up and it was a most heartfelt tribute.
Buck Owens was a country legend, who had the original version of this song. He also sang "Act Naturally," which was covered by Ringo Starr and the Beatles. Buck and Ringo did a video duet of that song as well.

Love Dwight Yoakum! Buck Owens was big back then. We watched HeeHaw every week because of the great talent they showcased and the corny jokes 😎👵🏼☮️💜
PDC club member here!! I agree with you about Dwight’s pants, they always fit him so well ☺️
Dwight Yoakam - "Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room (She Wore Red Dresses)" [Live from Austin, TX]
Thank you for this reaction. More Dwight Yoakam please.
welcome to south texas darlin, that sound?
He’s a fantastic actor as well
Dwight is in a category by himself. He's so unique. Oh, how I love him!
"The Bakersfield Sound"! I think the "short guitar" is an electric mandolin which produces those high pitch notes at the start.
Latino music in country. The best
Dwight Yoakam Guitars Cadillac. Listen. One of his best songs
One of my all time favorite songs
There were so many great artists in Country in the 1990's,Dwight stood out as one of the best!
This is ICONIC Bakersfield county music! This will last forever. Bakersfield was the destination of Route 66. The Graceland of the dust bowl. This is what John Steinbeck wrote about in The Grapes of Wrath. THIS IS AMERICAN HISTORY!
Buck Owens-Made in Japan. My
favorite song by him
One fun with Dwight I haven't seen mentioned "Hey Good Lookin'" by Dwight, David Hidalgo, and Buckwheat Zydeco.
It's Zydeco Music, Cajun I think. Accordions and concertinas are typical instruments used. Love that stuff!! Thx
