For anyone watching this video that does want the Ethernet to work, if your Wi-Fi is working highlight and copy the Wi-Fi IP address, click on Ethernet, click Configure IPv4, in the drop down box click manually, paste the working IP address you copied from the working Wi-Fi into the IP address box, click apply. Then click advanced, the Configure IPv4 box will say manually, click the drop down to show 'Using DHCP', click on it, click Renew DHCP Lease, click ok and you should have the Ethernet connected! Hope that help someone!
HOLY MONKEY CRAP, it WORKED!! Using an iMac running Mojave. I tried several other websites/tech blogs and that is the only thing that did it! (The first told me to reboot my modem, which I did, and it worked, but it shut off my router connection, which forced me to spend three hours getting it back. Didn't want to go thru that again.) I hope this works next time I have to restart my Mac but if not, at least I know what to do without tanking my WiFi with it. THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Bless you!
thanks for the tips, but curious why the Ethernet connection is still showing "self assigned IP address"? Having that problem on my Mac despite following the steps in the video. I can connect via wifi, but I want to connect via ethernet. thanks!
I'm lost, you start off by showing your Ethernet has no IP but your AirPort does, which typically means you have your Mac connected wirelessly and not thru Ethernet cable. Then you solve this "issue" by adding a new location and renewing the DHCP lease on a connection you already had an IP thru? Where did you solve the problem of the Ethernet connection having a self assigned IP?
Thank you so much. This worked, I have been on the phone all day with "specialist" and to no avail. Your vidio was so simple even for a beginner like me. Grateful!!
Any idea as to why when I click "apply" my settings revert back to default? I created the new 'test' location, but clicking 'apply' brought me back to "Location: Automatic". Thanks!
Thank you so much, I called apple for help and did like every ways but none of them works. Others said it didn’t work because they didn’t try hard enough
What is that application with the internet speed right next to MEM? does it track how much traffic was downloaded and uploaded. Im looking for an app that does that.
That's what Alexander was talking about! In the video, the guy CLEARLY states that it wasn't actually connected via Ethernet cable - he was just going through the steps as an example.
You guys have got to learn how to listen. He CLEARLY states that he didn't actually have an Ethernet cable connected; he was just doing it as an example.
I looked up a number of solutions for this problem, and deleting my keychain password restarting the computer, doing the DHCP lease horseshit all had the same non-existant result. That only thing that did work was resetting BOTH router and modem. Now as we can both see, I'm back in the action, baby.
+Iozefina Nagy Hi. The instructions are really bad. But I created a new location as shown in the tutorial. Then I klicked "Renew DHCP Lease". After that both ethernet and wifi is working.
"So we're going to start by opening System Preferences, which can be found by opening a new Finder window and clicking Applications --" It's right there in your dock, mate. xD
What? The wifi was connected all along (1:14). Why are you lying? That's just weird. I don't understand how this would solve anything, and it does absolutely nothing in my case. The only way I could solve it is by setting a static IP, something within the 192.168.0.xxx-range, using the "Using DHCP with manual address" in the TCP/IP settings.
You said it. This does nothing, changes nothing, and the video sure takes it sweet time even getting to the point. Enjoy the one clickbait success from me, Cult of Mac, never watching one of your ad-supported videos again.
Thanks for posting! This didn't work for me, but for those of you who are getting angry, this might help you. The problem with your connection may be that the computers firewall is goofing things up. Go to Mac HD/ Library/ Preferences/ and remove a file called "com.apple.alf.plist" After doing so, restart your computer. You may be prompted to allow incoming connections, but once you get them all set up again, you'll be back online. :)
That's great as far as the AirPort connection is concerned but what how does one resolve the Ethernet self-assigned IP address issue?
Thanks! Creating a new location never would have occurred to me, but it worked.
Changing locations worked! You’re a hero!
Thank you so much!!! I've been having trouble for almost a week and nothing worked till now!!
thankssss
Thanks for the video! The new location solved my problem!
This worked for me to connect to the public library wifi. Thank you!!
thanks, was trying hard to find a solution and this one was the only one that worked for me!!!!
huge time saver - what a relief - grazia maestro
Seemed to do the job! Thanks for the video!
You didn't solve the problem. The ethernet in your video still doesn't work, just the wi-fi.
THANK YOU!!! I've been having this issue for like 3 days now. It worked. Thank you so much.
Didn't work for me. Didn't work for you either!

What is that application with the internet speed right next to MEM? does it track how much traffic was downloaded and uploaded. Im looking for an app that does that.
Unfortunately, neither of those fixed the "self-assigned" problem for AirPort. what should I do next?
That clearly didn't work for you, Ethernet had a self assigned address - not WiFi.
John Talbot did u listen
I was replying to the poster of the video - not you.

I don't get it, why did you end up configuring the AirPort IP address instead?

I've been working as a Mac IT support for a couple years, and I feel stupid after watching this. Does anyone else can explain what happened here? 0_o
what. hahahaha
didn't work
-*-+
No
Check out the video on my channel showing how to fix this problem. It was the only thing that worked for me after months of trying.
Self Assigned IP Addresses did not fix
'Self assigned IP address' = wrong password
The problem is within ;)
google:
ip self assigned password keychain
Video makes no sense.
Nope.
