- Alex Lewis, father of one, came down with a common cold in late 2013, which quickly developed into septicaemia and toxic shock syndrome. With less than a 3% chance of survival, doctors fought to save him. From arriving back at his family home and readjusting his relationships, to taking his first steps, this film delves into some of the raw moments that shape his days.

Kayla Nguyen No as someone else pointed out, he said no to marrying her. They are not or were not married, but may well be by now! They lived together, she must really love that guy, I think they are perfect for each other. They have a strong relationship and know when to make a daft joke and it’s not taken wrong. I’m Scottish but I now live in England as my hubby and son are English. Over her when talking about them, if they were married, they would say his wife or her husband, they wouldn’t say partner. The fact that this was caused by bacteria that normally lives harmlessly on the surface of your skin is terrifying! Makes you think that this could happen to anyone, at any time. I deeply admire his wife for being so devoted to him.
It truly can I know someone who lost both feet and hands. There was no rash, but she felt terrible and had a low grade fever for days. I think her disaster started with a bladder infection, but what I mean is it's terrifying how vulnerable we all truly are.
Nothing has been explained as to why this happened. Stop freaking out. There was a cause to this.
@@lilo7741It was explained in the documentary. He got a sepsis from a bacteria that lives on the surface of the human skin, but in his case it turned out infectious and it started to attack the tissues and organs in his body.
@@annsu77 why did it turn out infectious. That’s the key point everybody is interested to know. How did a bacteria evade him immune system?
@@lilo7741It wasn’t that the bacteria evaded his immune system, it was the immune systems reaction to the bacteria that caused the extensive inflammation//sepsis. his immune system was fighting the infection but then at the same time started attacking his normal tissues as well.
Tho I understand what you’re saying in regards to wondering WHY a bacteria that is normally harmless caused his immune system to go bonkers. I guess it has something to do w how some people get sick by things that other people have no reaction to- it just depends on how your immune system works.
This guy is so much stronger than I am. I can barely keep my head straight as is. And I'm a relatively healthy guy with all my limbs. I can't even imagine going through this and finding the strength to trudge on and stay positive. I have a colossal amount of respect for him. And for his wife, for that matter. What truly awesome people.

I bet not so long...We humans should stop putting so much of our money and attention into such mindless entertainment such as people punching each other inside a cage so we could reduce the suffering of people like this in the video...... Instead we should put all our money and attention into supporting the transhumanist movement so we could benefit the people like the person in this video or benefit the whole human race itself.......If you don't know about Transhumanism, I highly recommend that you research about it because it will change the course of humanity....... My favorite uncle John had both arms amputated after an accident working for the electric company. He was an amazing man and so funny. We grew up seeing this man achieve everything with two hooks instead of hands. He also later lost an eye. Dude was a powerhouse.
He used to ask us to help him put on his hooks and we loved it. One day, while my sister was helping out the tube socks on his arms he kept yelling PULL HIGHER PULL TIGHTER and she accidentally punched him in the face. We laughed so hard. He thought it was so hilarious. He coached a football team for amputees. He taught us how to throw a baseball and catch one too…all with his hooks. He was a remarkable man. We miss him every day. He lived his life to the fullest. ❤️

What a beautiful tribute you left here for your uncle. It's these memories you share of him that keep his spirit close to you. And when you meet again someday, you'll find that he's been as proud of you as you were of him.

@@ehmehsmeh824 when you grow up you'll realize those things don't matter, your friend isn't your friend if they went with your ex behind your back. There's plenty of people out there so don't waste your time on the ones who toy with you. You might miss "the good ol days" but trust me, those people won't even be in your life when you grow up. As an adult myself, none of my high school pals talk anymore. And I don't know any adult friends who hang out with their "school buddies" think about it, do you know any adults that still see their school friends? Not really. Maybe rarely, because most of the time people just settle for what they can get for a friend. Don't settle. Do with my advice what you will, I just know that I've had the same scenario, getting cheated on and all.. don't get hung up on it, not enough to wish a devil disease on them anyway. Like I said, when you grow up, you'll realize the impact of that statement. As for your friends, their young, sometimes hormones take over and you definitely can't be mad at one and not the other. I wish someone told me not to waste so much effort worrying about other people that have hurt me, and just move on, and get better friends and partners that *actually* make me happy.
I just know I wish someone told me this as a teen. I'm now 32, and don't talk to any exes or friends. You grow up, do other things where you make new friends. Especially when you have kids, your world changes, so don't worry, they'll both be history in the scrapbook of your life in years time, mark my words. Good luck young one. Much love. You absolute bloody legend. Your story amazes me. Your strength, fight, and outlook are fantastic. You have a wonderful family too. Im sorry this happened to you, but youve faced it like a boss. I have recently had cancer surgery and lost half of my neck, ear, some of my face, tongue, and thigh from where the flap was taken. I am paralysed down the right side of my face. I know of the looks and stares. My injuries arent as bad (not the right word there) as yours and I have tried to face it with as much strength as you. You inspire me. You'll inspire many others

I met this guy. While I was a student nurse, he came to give a talk on sepsis. Afterwards he came around and spoke to us all individually. Absolutely amazing guy. Had us all in tears x

Strep Grp A happens a lot more often than we know. I was part of a team who took care of a 1yr old in the Foster Care system who got Strep A. She lost all of her toes, most of her fingers but she kept on being a toddler. I WISH I knew how her life went on...she would be about 48 yrs old now. I hope she went on to be awesome and to help others.
I would love to see an update video of this guy and his family. I'm sure he has made lemonade out of what happened to him.

I watch a man being nursed in the hospital I was in for brain cancer surgery... looking at his eye's while the nurse's changes his diapers was unforgetable. All I seen in his eye's were "please, let me die"

What a awesome woman to stay by his side during this tragedy. How could some sick minded people ever find humor in making fun of others that's different or sick? My prayers go out to him and his family 🙏
Not only that but sick minded people who intentionally go out of their way to make other people sick and disfigured. Like when they take a toenail fungus from one person and intentionally infects another person with that very fungus. It’s happened to me and he has infected me at least twice with the pneumonia virus. Pure evil.
I very nearly died from meningitis. Went from a burning fever and headache to waking up in ER and having my clothes cut off in resuscitation. I spent 2 weeks in ICU and made a full revovery... Felt like my head was being crushed in a vice.... All from a tongue piercing.
Frightening how quickly I went from simply feeling unwell and sending myself home from work to waking up in resuscitation.

I also had a catastrophic life changing injury. I love myself and my life now so much more than I did before the accident. Sometimes an injury like this is the Wake Up Call we need to realize our life really is worth it. Thank you for sharing this was such a beautiful story

The fact that you think that means that you already are a great person.
Since getting married, my husband has been through so much with my health. I’ve had to have my thyroid removed, had trouble stabilizing it with meds, had the thyroid regenerate, had to go through months of infusions for anemia, and then finally breast cancer, the treatments took away everything that made me beautiful, my hair, my long eyelashes, my eyebrows. It made me so so sick. Even though I am in remission, I am still on oral chemo that makes me incredibly sick, and which suppresses my immune system. Through it all, my husband cared for me, loved me, cuddled me, and made me feel as beautiful as ever. It isn’t just the women who stick it through. There are wonderful men out there who are simply amazing. I am so very thankful for my husband.

His son avoids him, his wife is suffering for him. Yet he still fights, believing that he will someday, make everything go back to normal. What an absolute chad. People with strong wills are better to look up to than celebrities you barely know.

This is my 2nd time watching this story. I can’t even fathom waking up to this being my own reality. Alex & his family are truly an inspiration…to the world! I hope they’re in a better place today as people & as a family. ❤️🩹

It always seems so selfish to me when people take someone else's tragedy and turn it around to make it about them. I never understand how I am supposed to count my blessings by comparing my life to his.

What a journey that Alex and his family have been through. Alex has overcome so more than most could ever imagine possible. He shows the strength and determination of an entire army. The love, strength and loyalty from his amazing wife clearly fueled his determination… and of course his precious son is also there daily to be that reminder of what life is truly all about. Such a roller coaster of emotions by just watching this & so I can’t imagine what it was like to live this journey daily. All the

It's sadly true. Conversely, women are less likely to get divorced if a partner gets sick than if their partner is well! My husband of 25 years left me 6 months ago when I got terribly ill. I was in the hospital for 19 days. He took the money, locked me out of accounts, and badmouthed me to everyone as if I had done something wrong to him! Now he has a lawyer and is trying to take everything. I'm shocked, traumatized and still trying to heal. It's a nightmare I never saw coming. I thought he loved me. He never spoke to me again, but I got one email a few months ago from him that said he wasn't "strong enough" to be with me. Meanwhile, he's trying to take our home and get out of any alimony. I will be destitute if he succeeds.

It would be incredibly difficult not to just give up. This man and his family don’t deserve pity, they deserve admiration. It really hit hard seeing his son hesitate to kiss him, as the father of a two year old. They’re incredibly brave and inspiring.

If he can do it, I can do it. Fatherhood can be a lonely and difficult phase of life. I'll keep Alex in mind anytime I'm frustrated with the general lack of support for fathers feelings and needs. A supportive thanks for sharing your life.
I think this is an amazing story; I’m just now seeing it. The fact that he is able to overcome all these obstacles and has an amazing woman by his side, sticking by him and being there for him. It’s just so awesome that he survived. I had never even heard of what he contracted until this video.
He’s a strong man and she’s a strong woman. She loves that man and that’s all that matters. It’s amazing.
