  • While we're still enjoying the break from the snow we're doing some work around the yard prepping perennials and new garden plots, and doing some maintenance to the already existing plots.

Looking good Steph! Will not be long now until we will have everything planted. I am so ready for spring to roll in. Can't wait to see your wonderful garden this season.

Good Video Stephanie. We have been adding rotation to our crops the last couple years, especially with the sweet potatoes. I like the tip on getting the wood chips from the dump. We have a city wood dump straight across the river from us, I will check with them on this! It is so cool seeing Forest growing so big and being such a big helper! OHH That ending was AWESOME!!!!! :)

Thank you so much! It is wonderful getting to really let him join in and explore. The dump chips have their concerns (anything leached in, I find pieces of plastic I have to sift out of it, etc) but my dad always used the same ones around our fruit trees growing up and we didn't have any problems. Have a great day! ~Stephanie

This time of year we get the itch to work in the garden. You should be good with your wood chips. I'll watch what happens with the cumin growing. I like using a lot of that in my cooking. Dirt is good for kids! Happy Spring! ~Janette

Absolutely I love every chance we can get to get out there :) and thank you for the vote of confidence on the woodchips, I've been a little back and forth about it. Thanks so much for watching and enjoy your day! ~Stephanie

Sort of off topic, but it does involve dirt- do you still do your laundry by hand? I remember a video about that back when you were acoupleofpreppers. Do you still prep? Any plans for alternative energy? Do you have long term storage along with a working pantry? I make my own spice blends too, so much better that the packets. I am looking forward to hearing about the difference between store bought and homegrown cumin. We'll be getting the snow storm too, we're up in NY. Stay warm :)

We're bordering you over here in CT. Doing laundry wise I am back and forth now, I do use a washing machine for the bulk, but my son's reusable diapers I do by hand and I'd like to do more by hand; we will definitely be setting up a clothes line this year at least so that I am not using the dryer. We have a small solar panel set up that needs to be hooked into this house and would like to expand it more and more (my husband is an electrician and has his own set ups for it with battery banks to not have to pay the large companies for install). Right now I store and buy whatever I can in bulk but it's kind of all over the place wherever I can store it right now and a second fridge and freezer in the basement that is packed. I have always Dreaamed of having a root cellar and would love to install one one day, but for the closer future I'd like to set up some sort of a system in the basement to get more organized with storage. I plan to expand the garden ALOT this year and try to store as much as possible which will all be in upcoming videos. We always make sure to have at least a few months of non perishables around the house (I like to stay around 5). Prepping is always part of what we do. I believe a big part of this journey is making it so that no matter what my son and family (in this home or extended) will have a place where they are safe and cared for and that we have a plan of how to get out if we had to. I am switching to all heirloom seeds this year as part of it too which i will also be talking about soon. I hope you stay warm and dry through the storm! Lots of love ~Stephanie PS sorry to write you a book here lol

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. Many homesteaders, myself included, start off as preppers. Over time we begin to realize that no matter what, all that stuff is going to run out, so we look for ways to be more self sufficient and sustainable. When I look at your evolution through your videos it just got me thinking about what you did then vs what you do now.

I completely agree. It has definitely been a journey and moving into the farming has always been a dream of ours that is finally starting up on a more serious basis. I believe that bushcrafting, prepping, sustainability, farming, etc are all components of one large and beautiful picture we, as people, tend to get stuck on different areas of that picture (whatever interests us most); I hope to one day bring it all together. Thank you for all of your support along the way, it truly means a lot to us
