What's often been said about all of Christopher Guests works when music is involved is that it works because the people playing the music (Spinal Tap, A Mighty Wind, etc) all are legitimate fans of the music they're playing in the films and a good majority of the time they write/play all the music themselves.. They're fans of the music, the artists, and this history. That what makes it so good. They aren't faking.
Christopher Guest’s personality in this interview is much more like his character in A Few Good Men than Nigel. The fact the dialogue for Spinal Tap is improvised shows how he and the rest of the cast are so brilliantly talented.
The scene where the guitars pick up radio signals actually happened! Was during a practice and my mate had a shit bass, cavity wasn't insulated... laughed so hard watching the film!
Years ago our band and I played in a hall near some sort of a satellite radio relay station - you could see the large dish antennae right out of the hall windows. My guitar wireless receiver was completely overwhelmed by the interference and would only pick up radio broadcasts. Had to use cable that night and loose all the flashy tricks like running around the hall while playing solos :) I had a really good laugh when I saw that scene in Spinal Tap some years later.
When we watched it together on a ski trip in the 80's my boss at the time thought this was all real! I was cracking up inside during the whole thing because of that alone!
It's hard to overestimate Spinal Taps cultural impact. There is even a guitar shop in Stockholm called These Goes To Eleven (TGT11) I also really enjoyed the "follow up" Christopher Guest Mockumentary series. Highly recommended. Pure genius 🤟🏻
If you have been to the Stonehenge museum, the lyric is on the wall: "No one knows who they were or what they were doing. Spinal Tap": huge respect to the museum director for posting.
There were several in the series of "mocumentaries" done by various members of the same cast including "Best in Show" about dog shows and "A Mighty Wind" about the folk movement. They're all really good.

I like how these guys stuck to the character commitment so much that even the real life of them involves hat guy being the boss like lars ulrich, sad eyes guy as hetfield and the other two not allowed to talk lol
And not to mention that the ‘theme’ song “the Majesty of Rock” is just a bloody fantastic song! It’s a great tune, and funny as hell to get the in jokes, but also it shows the absolute love they have as fans of early British metal that they absolutely nailed it.
I am not a Brit either. But I saw them at the Isle of Lucie festival when they were at their head banging best before the free form jazz period and the Jack the Ripper phase. Best damn show I ever saw. They were not stinkin’ up the great outdoors as some people calm.
the free form jazz period gets overlooked, unfairly to me...Kiss did the Elder, Def Leppard did their grunge album in the '90's, and U2 did their techno album, but that period of Tap is always dogged; people just want their bands to do the same type of music over and over. Had I been older, I would've been at the front row of that event...(I would not have sat through that stupid puppet show, though!)
My favorite movie of all time. Being in so many bands over the years, this movie is so real! I knew when scenes of this movie would play in my head mid-did I'd be like: "Hmmm, not sure this is going as planned" lol

I watched Spinal Tap early on in my music career as a very young man. I then spent the next 34 years as a musician, laughing at life!
It's hard to overestimate Spinal Taps cultural impact.
There is even a guitar shop in Stockholm called
These Goes To Eleven (TGT11)
I also really enjoyed the "follow up" Christopher Guest Mockumentary series.
Highly recommended.
Pure genius 🤟🏻
Genius film, incredible cast, very funny in a tongue in cheek way.
This movie was/is awesome and it came out at the perfect time.
Still the funniest movie I've ever seen
Let's not forget, most of it was improvised 😎
Michael McKeon is so funny and so good looking 👀 in this interview. I usually think of him as Lenny with his sidekick Squiggy. (Love how autocorrect changes name to Squiggly!) ❤✌️🤩✨💌❣️🇺🇲🇬🇧🎼
Right up there with Jaws and Empire strikes back in the great films of all time. 👍
Thank you. Honestly, this is truly fucking excellent.
A brilliant film the best thing Rob Reiner ever did.
The Princess Bride is great too.
@@Woozlewuzzleable I love best in Show and A Mighty Wind too.
@@DavidOakesMusic Those are Christopher Guest led movies. Reiner isn't in them
Stand by Me and Misery are also excellent.
@@brianmiller1077 Oh yeah, great modern classics. I didn't know he did Misery.
Van Halen didn’t think Spinal Tap was funny. He said everything that happened to them in the movie really happened to him in real life.
„The Stonehedge Monument was endangered to be crushed by a dwarf“😂😅😊
I'd enjoy it immensely if they stayed in character for every interview. 😊
If you've ever been on the road, you've lived almost every scene in this movie!
They showed one of my fav lines. The maintenance guy giving directions to get on the stage and says ya take a little jog and H shearer in the background “we don’t have time for that” not sure why just kills me every time
The perfect rainy Saturday movie
Fingers crossed for the new one…. 🤞
So many cameos in that movie too. Billy Crystal, Dana Carvery, and Fred willard has me LOL all the time! in all those Christopher Guest movies. he's the perfect addition And oh my word, the green Fender.... subtle statement at the very end of the exchange....
"what about that one?"
"No dont touch it. It cant be played ever."
"i wasnt touching, i was pointing."
"well dont point even"
"Can i look at it?"
"No. No. You've seen enough of that one."
🤣
Dana Carvery? are you sure you don't mean Toby Carvery?
@@djmikeyc i believe its dana carvey that billy crystal is talking to at the dinner party. They are dressed as mimes. Billy says, " cmon do the floppy bird. Mime is money"
The producer obviously thought the backstage ‘jogging’ joke was a standout. I bet very few will have even caught that joke on the first couple of run throughs 😂
Funny that you mention that. I've seen the movie dozens of times and it's the first time i can recall hearing that "don't have time for that" line.
I guess that's part of the reason we keep coming back to it!@@stupidas9466
Man, I soooo love this movie. Greatest comedy of all time
I like how these guys stuck to the character commitment so much that even the real life of them involves hat guy being the boss like lars ulrich, sad eyes guy as hetfield and the other two not allowed to talk lol
And not to mention that the ‘theme’ song “the Majesty of Rock” is just a bloody fantastic song! It’s a great tune, and funny as hell to get the in jokes, but also it shows the absolute love they have as fans of early British metal that they absolutely nailed it.
Excited for the new Spinal Tap film!
I hope it's in Dubly
"Saucy Jack" is a whole other story, though....
You're a naughty one ... Saucy Jack. Such a haughty one ... Saucy Jack.
They just don't make 'em like that anymore. 🤧 good days, good days.
My favorite movie of all time. Being in so many bands over the years, this movie is so real! I knew when scenes of this movie would play in my head mid-did I'd be like: "Hmmm, not sure this is going as planned" lol
Saw them on tour when they relased "Break Like the Wind." The loudest concert I have ever been too.
There are some movies you can watch multiple times and love them. Goodfellas is one and Spinal Tap is another.
"I specifically said... Spinal Tap AND puppet show"!!
And they have a bigger dressing room than the puppets...
