  • Here's the next episode of Chordplay and this time we're taking a look at the inspiring chord tonalities and sounds coming from the legendary prog-rock group King's X.
Ty Tabor from King's X is a highly-respected player and has generated a lot of praise and attention for his unique and interesting musical style. This goes not only for his guitar playing, but also his songwriting, vocal style, and recording/mixing approach as well. Needless to say, he's become an industry legend since his debut in the late '80s.
This lesson tackles some of the chords and flavors hiding beneath the surface in the music of King's X, so be sure to move through this lesson slowly and if you find something you like from this group of examples, you can continue your discovery of their music and his guitar approach from this springboard of raw ideas.

I've seen King's X at least 30 times. They're absolutely amazing, every time.
Years ago I sent my band's cassette to Doug and he wrote back a long letter with commentary about each song.
    They're the greatest.

Try that with any other band, much less arguably the most creative and original band since Beatles and maybe Pink Floyd.

Doug is a Genuinely awesome dude. As a 16 year old kid in Houston, he sat with me for about 45 minutes patiently waiting to get into a show at a venue because our security didn’t know who he was; he was on the VIP list and didn’t raise a stink at all. We sat and chatted until the figured out their shit and let him in. Worthy of noting he PLAYED the venue the week before when Kings X filled Lynyrd Skynyrds spot when yet another member passed away; within a days notice they were willing to play for almost 20k people in their adopted hometown of Houston, where soooo many people don’t know they exist. No ego in the King’s X. Beautiful expressive souls who create music that I think we are still processing the depth of. Stunning is all that describes them. And cool as a fuckin cucumber about it all.

Late Night Lessons sounds good! I love all their stuff but I particularly like everything before dogman even more... it’s his early solid state tone .. really does it for me...on dogman he switched to Mesa Boogie.... far far away is a classic tune along with most of the Gretchen album!! Thanks again for your efforts!!

Thank you so much and yeah, there was something really special about his early "Lab-era" tone. He still sounds great, but his old tone had so much character, it was like listening to Ty's fingerprints (or thumbprint).

      Thanks again and ROCK ON!!!

And of the hundreds (maybe thousands) of shows I've seen over the years, if I could choose one player's tone that I'd be stuck with for the rest of my life it would be Ty's. Great video man!

All that, and Ty is singing, on top of it all. Let that sink in.... whether he’s singing the lead vocals, on “it’s love“ or “lost in Germany“…, Or he’s singing harmony vocals on “summerland“ or “Goldilocks“ those complicated licks are underneath the amazing vocals.
    Ty is truly a master.

Never forgot when I heard "Out of the silent planet" from GGTN for the first time. What an unusual and distinct tune! Later I saw King's X open for AC/DC in Oldenburg, Northern Germany, and I felt I was the only person in the audience who liked them. Not a really good fit for AC/DC fans, I think. And unfortunately that experience seems to have led them to make the song "Lost in Germany" a little later...

How Ty got his tone was the best kept secret in music for several years. He went so far as to re-house his amps into decoy amp heads. Ty is literally the best live player out there. Satch is only guy in his league in a live setting. Ty occasionally busts out into a 10 minute improve solo during Over My Head
Those moments are life changing for the guitar fans who play guitar

@@peakAV its no secret now but during that time it was. He even explains part of it came from a blown vacuum tube in one of his amps. David, your Vito Bratta vid popped up in my suggestions - his licks on Pride are still some of my favourites, but I’m strictly a rhythm player...which led to Van Helen chords lesson (totally with you on Fair Warning for album top spot). When you broke down the Hear About It Later intro, I immediately heard shades of Ty...so I was literally about to comment to that affect and ask if you were familiar with Kings X...but decided to check out your full channel list first, thinking nah, I’m sure there couldn’t be a Ty Tabor lesson...and WOW! This made my day! I don’t know any music theory - playing stuff purely by ear for 30 years now, but I’m loving your knowledge, and joy for the how these licks are put together. So, so good. Thank you. And yes...the world SHOULD know Kings X. Ty especially has the Midas touch - every project he touches is pure gold. My current fave songs to jam are Mission, Pleiades...and Freedom...because, well...side projects are awesome...but you just can’t beat the sheer musical majesty of Jerry, dUg & Ty

I have way more catching up with your channel to do but this video is one of my faves so far. I’ll never forget hearing their stuff in a shopping mall music store (a near extinct species) for the first time and having a similar “Whoa, what and *who* is that?!?” reaction. It felt different than anything I’d ever heard and give both prog rock and melodius Beatles vibes at the same time.
For some reason I kept waiting to hear one more chord at the end of the “It’s Love” progression but I think I might be confusing something they were doing with their vocal harmony with guitar part lol - I need to re-listen since it’s been awhile. Love the few sneaky little just-outside notes Ty throws into outro solo too in that one.
Would love to see King’s X revisited in your 3 licks series too. Those bends of Ty’s... phew!
Big big fan of all the King’s X guys though and excited to see what they do in their new album.
Sorry for the wall of text. I get excited about certain things musically and have to make myself stop typing/talking lol. Cheers!

I first saw King's X (Out of the Silent Planet) when they opened for Hurricane in Springfield Missouri. Musical perfection!!! No other way to explain it. They completely changed how I listened to music, and that overall tone the band has is just inspiring.

Kings X, underexposed but NEVER underrated! I have never met a musician who was not a Kings X fan. Great video! Cheers! V

Great explanation and understanding! I got SO MUCH out of this video and I don't even play guitar! (but I DO know the King's X library pretty thoroughly and play piano and drums). Glad to see your great appreciation. Thank you!

Great break down and lesson on the inimitable Ty Tabor style of playing and writing.

Besides the killer riffs and amazing vocals, the timing tricks and mysterious lyrical content make them one of my all time favorite bands. Thanks so much for this...I wish you could delve deeper into them....they are indeed a treasure trove of awesomeness. Their stuff is truly a spiritual experience.

That was superb. I've had the joy of seeing them live three times, the first was in Glasgow for the Faith Hope and Love tour. What a band.

So cool to shine more light, on such a criminally overlooked band. I have seen them twice, and don’t understand why they aren’t massive. I agree about manic moonlight, tape-head is another favorite. But I honestly love everything!!
