Chordplay - 'The Chords of Vito Bratta'

- Here's the next episode of Chordplay with 'The Chords of Vito Bratta.'
I have to admit - I was a HUGE Vito Bratta fan when I was younger and just getting comfortable playing the guitar as a kid. His influence helped me realize it was okay that I was a massive Van Halen fan, and that I could (somehow) find my own way as a musician while also admiring EVH's guitar wizardry.
White Lion's music is still interesting to my ears these days, and while the songs have lyrically faded, Vito's guitar playing is as inspiring and interesting as ever. There was just something melodic and magical happening when he had a guitar in his hands, with great chord voicings, progressions, riffs, fills, licks, and solos - he was the real deal and a total package player.

All you need to know when it comes to Vito’s dominance in his day....
When Nuno Bettencourt was asked why his playing had become so ambitious he literally answered, “ cuz Vito Bratta is out there”
Enough said....
I think EVH felt threatened by Vito's playing, and paid him $25 million to never play again. ;-)
I love this quite and story! Where is it from? Do you have a link? Thank you!
“Vito Bratta is the only guitarist I've heard who sounds cool doing tapping. His solo on Wait is incredible.”
-Zakk Wylde. Guitar World. 1989.
The wait solo is legendary just as Randy Rhoads Mr Crowley solos
I love the Wait solo but when I tell people of my greatest solos of all time it’s the Little fighter solo. It’s absolutely amazing and tasteful with everything. Tapping, arpeggios and even string skipping all with Vito’s incredible melodic feel.
Thank you for this! I love Vito Bratta and think people really missed out on his genius. He is one of my all time favorite guitarists from the 80s. Would love to see some more Vito stuff and with the hope you do make more, I've hit the subscribe button.... :)
Oh and hello from The Bahamas!
Enjoy your lessons and reviews of guitarist from my era!!! I have learned alot!!! Thank you!!
That's what this is ALL about and thank you so much!
It makes me feel good to see comments like this one - so thank you!
Stay tuned for more material and ROCK ON!
That ONE chord in Lady of The Valley!
Thanks for this nice share. What an ingenious richness of harmony there is in Vito Bratta, isn't it?
Great vids but I would work on the distorted sound you use, or at least how you record it. It’s a nice tone but comes across in the vids with an overbearing low end that sometimes muddies up what you are playing.
Dave what do you think of Ty Tabor.... He's an absolute monster I'd like to see you do his chords!!
Vito was one of the best the chord progressionds were great with lots of fills in-between.
I agree. He was/is just so darn musical when he plays. The chords, riffs, fills, licks, and solos were all brilliant!
: )
Thanks for watching!

TOTALLY down for another Vito episode!!
David, seriously - your videos are so inspirational- I’ve been writing a lot of new tunes using knowledge I’ve acquired from your videos! Thanks so much.
That's outstanding and exactly what I like to hear!
THat's what this is ALL about.
I'm just sharing ideas and some knowledge and I've been teaching guitar and music since I was in high school (technically), so I really just love helping people and sharing whatever I can to inspire others.
Rock on and take care!
Eric Jason Brock I agree! More Vito! David has truly inspired me also and reminded me how much fun the electric guitar is! I subscribe to many guitar instructional channels here on UA-cam and DB’s has quickly became my favorite! When I see new content uploaded it feels like Christmas! 🎸🎸🎸
Ho ho ho!
Thanks again Joe!
: ) lol
@@LateNightLessons You can never have enough Vito. His style of playing still stands up to this day. I'm sure you could do an episode of more songs or even just solos from Vito.
Thank you!
Here's a tidbit of info about the wait solo that I bet a lot of people don't know. The wait solo you hear on the album was Vito's 1st practice run and one and only take in the studio. It was time to record the solo and Vito plays that solo right off the fly as a warm up. He tells the producer "ok I'm ready". The producer says, "what do you mean? That's it!" so that's the exact solo you hear on the album. I find that astonishing! EVH did the same on the beat it solo but I find Vito to be a lot cleaner with his playing. There is a radio interview with Vito on UA-cam were Vito reveals a lot of what happened with White Lion and why he disappeared from the scene all together. Highly suggest listening to it.
Correct but they did do more takes because Vito insisted.
But like the producer said, they couldn’t beat the magic of that first solo.
Need more Bratta! We are starved, a true guitarist.
Going Home Tonight is one of my favorite songs from Big Game. That and Little Fighter are probably my 2 favorite songs from them.
Vito is one of the best guitarrist coming out from the 80s and influenced by VH. My favorite one is without a doubt Nuno Bettencourt but Vito is right next. Both amazing players and legends in my book
Jake E. Lee was right up there..
@@michaelsteven1090 amem brother!
Sounds great! Vito used same pickup on Pride album
Pleasee, don't compare vito bratta with Kirk whammett.
Goin home and lonely nights are killer.
Dude, you're a total stud with all those 80's licks. Seen the Ratt and Dokken vids, too. I hope to play like you some day. This channel is gonna be HUGE by this time next year. All the best!
Thank you so much for watching and for this comment too!
: )
Take care and ROCK ON!
Going to high school in the early 80's, EVH and Randy Rhoads were right in my wheelhouse and I saw both of them live, EVH a bunch, like whenever you had the chance. When Flexible came out, it was clear Vai was a virtuoso. Rising Force was promising for Malmsteen, but imo, that was his best effort. When Wait hit the radio, I knew immediately Vito was in that category. He got pegged as a EVH clone back then, but he was a lot more then that. It's great to see all these years later his stuff being dissected for it's inherent beauty and complexity. It's criminal that these guys were opening for Stryper on the success of Pride.
Sadly, folks are still on that " van halen clone" nonsense. The guy was far beyond van halen in melodic sense, phrasing, had a wider range of chord voicings, didnt spend 90% of his career lockedinto pentatonic leads over major chords... they just shared a lot of similar influences.
Dude I was 16 when Wait came out. I was watching Headbangers Ball and Wait came on. Like you, I knew there was a new gunslinger in town. Actually got to meet Vito on the Aerosmith tour they opened for in 87 or 88. Amazing guitartist. I wish he had a better lyricist to work with. But man what a band.
When Vito was born a star shone in the sky to mark his coming brilliance.
Wow at 7:50! After all these decades That's the arpeggiated bridge part! Sounds totally different played by itself. Like something a modern melodic band would would kill for. Vito was mad deep.
Heck yeah!
It's weird that you don't really notice it until you listen for it and start playing it along with the song, and then not long after that, it's the only thing you can hear during that section once it gets stuck in your head.
: )
I ignored that part for years (mainly because I was trying to cover the distorted guitar part), but once I learned it I realized that THAT was the cool chord thing happening in that section of the song, and it always eluded me until I finally sat down and learned how to play it.
And you're right, it doesn't even sound like part of the song until you listen for it and hear it hiding in those nooks and crannies.
Thanks for watching and for this comment too - ROCK ON!
It sounds kinda like hemorrhage by fuel... kinda
Man this is my new favorite guitar channel. Man keep up the great work. Love the Chord Stuff.
I love reading comments and seeing feedback like this - thank you!
Stay tuned for more lessons and material and take care!
: ) ROCK ON : )
I should have researched first. On your Dokken chordplay video I asked for Vito. I hate when people say they were a hair band. Vito flew way under the radar with fans and his peers. Very interesting style and chord choices. My issue is that Vito was in the wrong band. Mike Tramp was a great frontman and vocalist but one thing I noticed was that White Lion songs always became less interesting when the vocals come in. Horrible lyrics. The song "She's got everything". Guitar work needs more than I went to a party... had a couple of beers and a bottle of wine..lol. A lot of guitarists in this timeframe were left in the cold and seemed out of place. Nuno Bettencourt and Vito Bratta are examples.
this is a freaking great video! Vito really was brilliant! His solos were so melodic, you can hum every single one of them! He really didnt get as much credit as he deserved. People would just pass him off as an EVH clone. But he was soooo different!
Yes, please do a part two! Love Vito Bratta, such an underrated and under appreciated guitar player. Would love to see you breakdown Am I Evil and their version of Radar Love.
David...you QUICKLY HAVE BECOME MY FAVORITE INSTRUCTOR...PERIOD!
P.S. thanks for sharing in GUITAR ORGY GROUP🎼♬♪♫
That's great to hear and thank you so much!
\m/ ROCK AND ROLL \m/
Vito Bratta is my favourite!! Great video!!
Very sad news EVH passed away today. We have lost a legend.
Thought the same thing when I was working through wait. Noticed a little Zeppelin "Ten Years Gone" in that progression.
I feel blessed to have discovered you David.. thanks. You have a really soothing, inviting way of teaching. I have learned a lot. You da man!! Thank you!!!
I never really spent much time learning chords . Wish I had looking back . Im curious I have watched several of you Chord breakdown Artist spotlight vids . Has being into chords like you are help you become a better Solo player or is that something that doesn't really excite you about Guitar ? Basically did learning all these chords help turn you into a player who can play very good or did they help you become a Shredder ? If you shred please do just a 3 or 4 minutes of it vid and how learning chords helped Im curious . Great video and yes please when you can cover some more Vito their version of Radar Love has some fantastic sounds to it . I'm over 50 and should like the original version by Golden Earring more , but White Lion just did it better hands down lol Peace & Thanks again ...
Vito and Lynch, my two favorites hands down. BTw, Vito is my neighbor here in Staten Island and a true gentleman.
If he is your neighbour then please urge him for the sake of the people who miss his music to come back once again
Sykes.
Don't worry, he's coming.
: )
Amazing. So jealous of your ear
One of my favorite guitarists, rarely mentioned. Just subscribed. I like how you brought to light his ability to play melody’s as he moved through chord progressions.
Sorry to reply to my own comment but, his solo on “Little Fighter” always lights a fire for me. I usually play the song twice when I when I’m listening to that album.
I absolutely love Vito Bratta...some of the sickest guitar playing of the 80's. Wish White Lion had stayed together.
Love these Vito video breakdowns. One of my favorites as well. Excellent job man.
Thank you!!!
: )
You can’t beat Fight to Survive, the entire album !!!!!!
Wait (bridge) if you know gypsy kings... you'd recognize such chords progressions
Awesome channel my friend! Thanks for taking the time and putting forth the effort to make sure an informative video!
You brought back some foggy memories with this post. I actually dated Vito's cousin for a few months in Vegas! Typical New York girl too... HA! I was in a band (different life) and she was a stripper, OF COURSE! Anyway, nice chic as strippers go. She was so proud of him... You're certainly blessed with a God given talent man... New sub here...
Keep the faith and keep fighting the good fight.
God bless and take care...
Whoa...that's wickedly awesome and outstanding.
: o
Thanks for watching and for this comment too!
Take care and ROCK ON\m/
Do the break between solos in Warsong. I love that acoustic playing Vito does. (kind of remiinds me of the music from the movie "Midnight Express") But it's kind of drowned out by keys and vocals.
Heck yeah - that song ROCKS!
It's one of their most epic songs. It's rockin' and also mellow and Vito just pushes it over the edge the entire time.
It's so good!
I can't seem to find this exact lesson on Pateron 🤔....HELP!😮
Always love that Guitar for the Practicing Musician Mag cover of Lynch & Bratta; the demon & angel; dark & light.
Van Halen was an amazing influence on Vito bratta although his Coral work and his melodic content are Elton John influenced .. look up the song Don't give up!! His guitar work in this song is so creative!
Thanks David, I want to put in a suggestion for Uli Jon Roth! The guy Yngwie malmsteen borrowed about 90% of his technique and note choice
That's very true and Vito was much more than a "Van Halen clone" (even though that's what a lot of folks said about him at the time), but take a good listen to his music and you can see he was influenced by EVH, but Vito totally had his own thing going on.
No offense to EVH, but I think Vito probably knew more chords than Eddie did.
: ) LOL
Uli Jon Roth is a great request and long overdue! Good call on that one - he's totally on the list!
Thanks again for watching and this comment too!
Take care!
@@LateNightLessons cool! Uli Jon Roth -Sails of Charon
How did you get the full acoustic part on Wait bridge section? By ear? Or official WL Pride Tab Book? Or using software to isolate the track?
Vito was truly one of the all time greats.
LATE NIGHT LESSONS, he is a small clip of Larry Mitchell doing his arpeggio technique he uses to play min9 arpeggios. Larry Mitchell has more tricks I'm sure I dont think you made a video lesson on larry mitchell yet
ua-cam.com/video/MfLy8gOoHyU/v-deo.html
I believe when the acoustic to electric changeover happens in Lonely Nights, the music shifts up a whole step, or maybe a half a step, I can't remember. Awesome lessons, man!
No doubt... Vito was an original... For me he was more an amalgamation of Eric Johnson's (unique voicing style and violin tone) with some Van Halen tone and styling to boot... I never thought he was a Halen clone though...
What about broken heart the original version? Could you do that? I think it's Dminor
That's a great tune and I'll see what I can do!
: )
Loved the fact that you took time to show us the chords to "Lonely Nights". It's one of White Lion's hidden gems, in my opinion.
So cool! Thanks for doing this! Would love to hear Part 2! Keep Rockin’
Thank you so much and I'll see what I can do!
: )
Vito was on e of the absolute very best guitar players and his playing still amazes me. I really miss this guys playing and w here it could have went. I loved this band White Lion too very much and they were very special , people dont realize how special they were. This was a great lesson my friend and i hope you did another one on Vito he was an intelligent astonishingly incredible guitar player and song writer. 😎😎🗽🗽👍👍👍🔥🔥🎼🎸🎼🎸💙💜
Glad I couldn’t sleep and woke up to this gem! 🤟🏻
Thanks Joe!
: )
Steve Knight from Cry Wolf. Take a look at his work. Very unique one axeman work
Great video. Thanks for keeping Vito's music alive. Cheers.🙏
theres a funny story about Eddie & Vito hanging out at some music event....its on youtube somewhere
We said "Sounds like Zeppelin" at the same time 😝👍.
Again great rundown of his playing. Vito was so fluid playing live. Only guitarists can appreciate what he was doing back then. Late Night W/Dave, your a great guitarist and thanks again!😀
Thanks so much and yeah, Vito ROCKS!
: )
Stay tuned for more videos and lessons and take care!
Yessssss!!!!! Oh hell yeah!!! Good one, bro!!! My kinda stuff right here. Vito is badass. He was only in our ears a short time but he had tons to offer as you've pointed out here. Nice one!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘
Thanks man and I totally agree!
Vito was a monster player and had so much to learn, borrow, or just flat-out steal.
: )
Rock on\m/
Song 'It's over ' from Mane Attraction, please..
So whatever did happen to Vito? Is he still making musi and sharing his gift?
12:13 Sounds like Desert Song by Michael Schenker
"Be bop a lula she's my baby..."
All you need is rock and roll!!
Love those white lions on the laptop behind you: nice touch! ;)
I'll try to get him on video idk if he'll go for it and I don't wanna lose my teacher neither that's his gm2 in my profile pic anyways I'll try
That was awesome! I've loved Vito's playing since day one! You've really nailed his tone to boot!! Great job!
Thanks Rudy - rock on bro!
Vito was on another level. His verses were just as hard to play as his leads. One of a kind player
Lonely nights and Lady of the valley are just sickness
Vito Bratta was so melodic every part of his music was s melodic statement and his tone was phenomenal, I read that he had medical issues with his hands, such a loss, he was a musical genius
He was such a great player and his music/ideas made those songs better than they would've been otherwise.
They didn't last long after the '90s arrived, but what they did record and release was really great!
It's REALLY interesting to listen to some of those early demos and alternate versions of these songs. They were a little heavier early on and added a bit more of a melodic/Top 40 style by the time Pride came out.
Vito was on fire the entire time and really made their music special.
I watched the 1st 30 seconds and already liked....
Vito has more Neal Schon vibe than the Eddie's inspiration in his playing, dude is such a melodic driven player
Vito did get compared to EVH a lot back in the day, and I totally hear what you're saying. There's something about those super-melodic players. Steve Lukather's another one.
: )
Thanks for watching and take care!
More Vito PLEASE!!! I'm requesting Broken Home and Shes got Everything! Thanks in Advance..
Just started getting into Vito and White Lion a few weeks ago and I’m glad I’m not the only one who had their attention caught by the outro chords to Wait
I love Bratta... thanks for the vid.. keep doing what your doing & your channel will prosper... great content...awesome... clever covers it nicely... Viva Vito
Thank you for watching and thanks - it's growing every day!
: )
Vito is awesome, thanks for doing this video..👍
I wish ya played the little fill after the LOnely nights riff lol
Your windows pulpit is loaded with white lions' heads, is it just for that video or always ; ) ?
Is it just me. He said "Van halen" a lot of times than Vito Bratta in this entire vito bratta lesson.
Do you teach private lessons via zoom?
...No wait, the ONE in Hungry!
In the music I write, I use a lot of those types of chords that you played around the 8:30 mark (the add 9 chords).
I love the way they make me FEEL when I play them.
Damn! The further on that this video progresses I can hear so many similarities in his style & mine.
I do a lot of those style chord progressions, but I mainly play an old-school thrash style. I just try to make it melodic by using the same types of chords Vito liked to use.
Of course, I am older now, do the latest songs I’ve written aren’t fast like the stuff I wrote in the early to mid ‘90s. The latest stuff I’ve written hovers between 100-120 BMP.
I love those chords too!
: )
They make my creative side of things go crazy when I hear them. It's funny how something you learn/hear at one time in your life reappears and mutates at another stage in your life.
Music rules!
Thanks again and rock on man\m/
Late Night Lessons,
😂
Yeah, I have a song that I wrote & got inspired on the intro riff & didn’t realize it.
One day it dawned on me: it is the intro riff to a Hexanhaus song (Mike Wead) only it was REVERSED. In my mind, I reversed it when I “wrote” the riff. It was purely unintentional.
It is a cool riff. It has a similar feel to the one from the Hexanhaus song. I doubt anyone would ever notice unless I told them it os a reversal of the other riff.
But, at that point in my life, I was doing a lot of LSD.
😂
So, that might explain me reversing the riff in my mind.
🤣
I think I suffer from “musical madness.”
😳
In bed at night, I often play my songs/riffs in my head, analyze them & try to figure out ways to improve or arrange them. Sometimes my mind gets too occupied with it.
Music is my passion, my therapy.
That's awesome man.
: )
I can honestly say that music and the pursuit of improving kept me out of a lot of trouble when I was younger and in high school, when my buddies were out getting in trouble with the cops, my ass was usually home practicing.
I didn't get weird until several years later in college.
: ) lmao
Peace buddy!
Wish you did lady of the valley. It's ok.
I thought you were started with Wait’s intro but its ok. I love Vito, skillfull and melodic at the same time, only few guitar players does that.
I liked him better than EVH. Very wicked.
Many guitar i like...vito is top 1...
Thank you for the knowledge
Very Cool!!!!! Keep the 80’s players coming!!!!! Maybe some Michael Schemker, Paul Chapman from UFO........
Thank you and speaking of Michael Schenker, I did create a Three-For-All lick lesson featuring him a month or so ago. Look around and you should be able to find it in the mess of vids.
: ) lol
Rock on!
That’s right......I had forgotten about that video!!!! Thanks!!!! Have you listened to UFO with Paul Chapman? He was also in another band called Waysted!!!!!
UFO rocked but I never listened to Waysted.
I'll check 'em out!
: )
\m/ ROCK AND ROLL \m/
Now I get to revisit this as a lesson!
Man, real cool chords. Having fun sounding good
Be-Bop-Alu-la she's my baby!
Under rated frome day one.....his melodic surfing is incredible....thanks for the vid
I totally agree and thanks for watching and the comment!
Rock on!
Subscribed! Excellent playing and analysis. Thanks!
Thank you so much and thanks for watching too!
: )
Stay tuned...
Thanks Dude... of course Vito's a guitar god..
Bebop beloopop she's my lady
Hello David. Loved Vito's style. His works are his own with a dab of Halen. I read some where that he was criticized sounding like Eddie. I didn't know why. He always mentioned he was influence by him. Every one had adapted Eddie's technique by that time already. I miss the guy. Such a great guitarist. Thanks for naming the chords as you play them. Big help. Liking your vids. Rock! \m/
Thank you so much!
: )
I just posted a new Vito Bratta lesson and good luck with your studies!
Rock on!
i love ur content man...very insightful
All You Need is Rock and Roll
Great vid Dave,am a big fan of Vitos playing, very underrated in my opinion. The two Whites. White LIon and Great White. Those two bands had hooks galore. If you can do a vid on the licks and riffs of Great White.🎸
Heck yeah and I'll see what I can do!
: )
Thanks!
I know about White Lion cause I was born in the 80's but I gotta admit... I never listened to them much. Those chords are so cool though... gotta check more of him out. Another awesome vid!
Yeah, I'd highly recommend checking him out.
Even if you don't like the songs, the guitar parts, riffs, licks, and solos are worth checking out.
Rock on man\m/
Love that you have the Pride White Lion logo as your PC desktop! Nice touch! Oh and congrats on breaking 700 subscribers. Your channel is gathering momentum and set to take off🤟🏻🎸🎸🎸
Thanks again buddy and I felt that background on the laptop was fitting.
: )
Yes, it's really great to see this channel growing every day. I see loads of positive feedback and excitement - which makes all of the time and work totally worth it (to me).
Stay tuned and thanks again for the comments and support - you rock!
Second part David! Come on!!!
8 min is a great progression
