The relationship between Johnny Boy and Charlie is one of the most poignant things I've ever seen in a movie. It's my favourite Scorsese flick alongside Taxi Driver.
I am telling a straight fact here. The spontaneity with which Robert deliver his lines is simply incredible, i mean scary good actor. Second best to none. He never overacts in this scene. Natural flow of words from his mouth with those emotions is unbelievable. Undoubtedly he is the greatest actor ever without a shadow of doubt. Fucktards or fanboys think otherwise.
I discovered this movie in 1988 I was in junior high.. I fell in love with filmmaking from that point forward Scorsese films.copolla Kubrick,.. huge DeNiro fan
I love how Johnny's look gradually degrades over the course of the film as he sinks deeper. He starts off the movie in a nice suit and tie and by the end he has nothing but a ratty jacket and some slacks, in contrast to the other characters who remain well-dressed throughout.
De Niro is the best, pure talent! It is hard to believe that I'm watching to an actor and not to a real person. I can't even realize that Johnny doesn't even exist, such an amazing acting! I love you Robert :D
It's supposed to be funny, dumbass, because Johnny Boy is a fucking immature clown, which is what *SPOILERS* makes his death so tragic because he is naive and the youngest in the group.
This movie does a great job of portraying a person (Deniro) who is almost purposely trying to destroy himself. That's why Johnny pulls the gun on Mike at the end. Continued escalation.
My fav actor of all time. Words can't describe his acting skills, he's simply amazing! I see him acting and suddenly forget that I am looking to a screen and not to a real person. ❤
At first Johnny boy's like "He's a fuckin' liar where is he?", then when he finds out he's actually there he's like "What do I care?" lol, excellent acting on DeNiro's part.
"Wait a minute, Charlie... - What ? - Well, you're right... - I'm right ? - Yeah... Was it the last tuesday ?... - Yes, that's the tuesday that was last week that's before the one is about to come up." :)
That COULD be my favorite scene in Deniro history because I remember when I first saw it and my jaw dropped literally and the person I was watching it with and I just kept looking at each other then back at the screen then back at each other and at the end we were like "That is why deniro is a genius- always has been and always will be!" P.S. I live keitels reactions in this scene- priceless!
"I wanna KILL this fuckin' kid! I mean, I wanna... NYUHHHHH!!!! I wanna kill this kid! I was so crazy!" Mr. DeNiro has a way about him that will make any man want to bite his knuckles and go "NYUHHHH!!!"
Apparently according to Scorcese, when De Niro says "Joey Clam/Scallops" @ 1:24 , thats actually a real persons name from De Niro's Neighbourhood, So therefore as Harvey Keitel being from a different Neighbourhood he at first gets Confused when De Niro mentions the Name but then Improvises & Plays Along LOL
Bl4ckBull3t1 Actually, the reverse is true. De Niro was at his absolute best in the late 70s (Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Godfather 2, The Deer Hunter) and early 80s (Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, Once Upon a Time In America). With a few notable exceptions - Goodfellas, Cape Fear and Casino - his work went stedily downhill. Certainly in the 2000s.
I have a friend that I grew up with that is just like Johnny Boy. I used to get into conversations like this one with him all the time since he was my best friend. Keitel does a great job going along listening to him. I think Keitel trumped DeNiro in this movie. I know aot of people are going to disagree but I always felt that way. Bottom line: they are both great. PS: I saw this movie when it came out. My friends mother took us and we were like 12 years old. Pretty hip when I think back on it.
I've been a great fan of Robert de niro forever, for me the best ever actor. I thought I'd seen this film and I probably did years ago but I watched it today and this scene just made me smile and think to myself.... wow.... he's second film and he's stealing the show. What an actor..... no wonder Michael hitched he's wagon to him. Robert de niro - magic
De Niro reminds me of ppl from LA when u experience shit, lie or no lie, u just can't help but go on and on explaining every little detail to the person ur with bcus u just want them to feel how u felt De Niro is a friggin legend
True. The best story retellings are the ones full of details that are somehow relevant to the main story. I had a friend who could hold your attention for an hour just telling you a story, it'd be so detailed that you could picture it in your head, and it wasn't like it was useless details, they somehow put you right in the story. In this case though, Johnny boy is definitely bullshitting lol. He's rambling and just making excuses up on the spot
I wondered about that, because the part where they're talking about Joey Clams it looks like Harvey Keitel is about to crack over the 'they're the same person' line.
Seriously de niro could've been anything, Architect, salesman, engineer, businessman and a hotel manager. He literally convinces a person/audiencs that hes speaking the truth. What i think is that scorcese told the actors that the scene is being shot but you wont know where the camera is and thats how the scene get so real.
The old, great version of DeNiro. Keitel wasn't too bad either. Both of these guys stood out in any scene they were in and knew how to share a screen in deference to a plot and story.
The word underrated is severely overused, but this movie is criminally underrated. Its a work of art. The acting and dialogue is a excellent as you're likely to see..

Best of scene ever
watching De Niro in this scene is like watching a master jazz musician improving a solo...
yupp, if someone's asks how to do natural acting and want tutorials. Just make them watch this scene. Gold acting by Robert.

k Bell yeah it takes so much skill to act exactly the way you are - Deniro is literally from Little Italy.

“Joey Scal is Joey Clams.” Jimmy Sparks, Joey Scal, Joey Clams, Frankie Bones, Donny Donuts. I grew up with these guys.
When you compare Keitel and DeNiro here to their characters in Taxi Driver, we see why they are two of the greatest of all time.

I actually think DeNiro looks a bit like Lillo Brancato(who played DeNiro's son in A Bronx Tale) in this scene.

He kind of dresses and looks like Liam Gallagher later on in the film
That's the whole reason why Lillo was chosen to play Robert's son in A Bronx Tale.
Yeah as his son within the story he supposed look like De Niro😕

Genius of acting. God of acting.
Scorcese was at his best in the 70's in my opinion. His films from that era give me a feeling I can't put into words.
2 years late but it felt more raw
3 years late, but that's because his movies have a grittiness to them that can't be replicated simply because of the times. 70's New York.
Unbelievable movie. How it doesn't get more attention is beyond me?!
It's a crime DeNiro wasn't nominated for this. One of his best roles ever. One of Keitel's best too. A Scorsese classic.
One of De Niros greatest performances, the man was on fire during the 70s
"You dont make up for your sins in the church. You do in the streets"
The rest is bullshit and you know it .
