Can you imagine anyone else playing the part of Joey other than the great Joe Pesci? He is a natural. Look at the expression on his face as he's confronted by his older brother. That is raw talent. And what can you say about the great Robert DeNiro? Amazing actors. This is by far one of the greatest movies of all time. I never tire of watching this movie over and over even though I know what's going to happen next. It's like Scorsese let's his audience play the part of the voyeur. Brilliant.
That's why to this day Raging Bull is one of my favorite movies of all time really because of the cinematography which is breathtaking and the acting the actors did a excellent job the dialogue sounded so realistic you think you're watching a documentary
I remember being a kid and watching this movie. I’d watched all sorts of scary and creepy movies up to this point, but this scene was the most suspenseful I’d ever watched.
Great scene, as are they all in this amazing film. The best one for me though was when Jake explains to his brother how upset he is about his hands. How theyre too small, how his body isn't built to be able to fight Joe Louis. No matter what he does, how good he is, how much effort he puts in, Jake can never go up against 'the best there is' (as Jake refers to Louis) because of something out of his control. I think this is true source of the bulls rage and where all Jakes insecurities stem from.
+Kirk Landau Jake consistently saw himself being made a victim by others. It's pretty evident he had deep seeded feelings of guilt and inferiority most likely due to his past and upbringing. Also, he saw Louis as the "best there is" over Robinson because Louis was the world heavyweight champion at that time and LaMotta was above all else obsessed with becoming world champion.
Agreed... the ensuing actions resulted in a schism between them that remained for the duration of the film. After Jack beat up Joey in his own house in front of his wife and children, Joey was hard-pressed to forgive him, let alone be around him anymore.
how did Marty Scorsese find these guys??....he's just pure genius....Robert De Niro is the greatest actor off all time (my opinion) and Martin Scorsese is the Greatest director of all time (also my opinion)....then he found Leo DiCaprio who is another Great Actor....my god...he's just an incredible director
De Niro actually told Scorsese to watch out for DiCaprio as he is a next big star, when De Niro worked with DiCaprio in This Boy's Life, he truly saw the talent in DiCaprio. Scorsese obviously eventually gave Leo his first role in his film "Gangs of New York" even tho Daniel Day Lewis was the best part of GONY, I thought DiCaprio still did a good job.
From 2:15 and on, the genius of tone Pesci uses to illustrate his point across. Just subtle text like this is just what makes dialogue brilliant even if it's just to make a point in someone's head. Pesci and Deniro are amazing!
This is real self-sabotage on Jake's part. He finally wins the belt, but still feels inadequate, so he concocts this whole story in his head to push people away. He's on top of the world, but he feels the need to destroy himself regardless.
Scorsese, De Niro & Pesci made one hell of a genius team! Also, that La Motta clearly had issues, believing his wife sleeps with every man she comes is contact with, including his brother
I agree with you wholeheartedly, but man, the real Vickie La Motta was hot, so I could definitely see why he was jealous. She did a nude Playboy pictorial years ago when she was in her 50s. Her body and face could put women much younger than her to shame.
Beautiful movie, absolutely beautiful. If ever there was an Achilleus of the American epic, it was Jake LaMotta. I'm comforted knowing that after his fall, he wised up some, took life less seriously, and developed some modesty, as shown by his eager cooperation with Scorsese and willingness to air out all his dirty laundry in this movie.
I don’t know how anybody could watch this or anything Deniro is in and not laugh. The mannerisms and that tone of voice is always comical no matter how serious the character is and Joe Pesci adding to it with “whaaattt?” And telling his kid he is gonna Stab him with his fork.🤣🤣😂😂😂
They shot the scene two different ways, when they shot it with the camera facing Pesci, De Niro is off camera. So when they shot it, De Niro did a take where instead of “You fuck my wife?” He said “You fuck your mother”? So that reaction is Pesci reacting to “You fuck your mother?”
