I've always felt that the best moment is Keitel around 2:10, it's the only moment where he betrays that even as sleazy as he is, even he is a little creeped out by Travis.
Fun fact about Keitel's pimp character: Before filming started on this movie, Scorsese sent a couple of guys out into NYC, to find a real-life white pimp, whom he could use as inspiration for the character. Anyway, about 2 weeks later, they came back and told Scorsese that there wasn't a single white pimp, in the whole of the city.
Seriously, Harvey Keitel steals this scene!! He nails playing this dirty character! He delivers the dialogue in such a slimy way and the way he literally is able to take your attention off of De Niro and put onto Keitel. Fantastic performance by Keitel and a fantastic film for sure!
I disagree; De Niro's performance here is equally impressive as that of Keitel, the only difference is that De Niro's performance is so much more subtle and harder to notice the great subtleties.
@@Rob-z7k With age everyone's body deteriorates, hence why De Niro has put on weight, the knee-joints suffer, as does one's back which results in people losing a couple of inches in height.

Surprising how in shape Harvey Keitel is here, muscle definition, delts and I'll bet they weren't hitting the gym or working out like that in the 70s. You rarely see that kind of shape these days. It's on the south side of 13th Street between Third Avenue (the direction Travis came from) and Second Avenue. The blue hotel sign lasted until the 1980's I think, but it's long gone now.

@@mirazusta2002 You're welcome! Yes, I grew up in New York and moved back here in recent years. In 1975 my now ex-wife was living at 19th and Second Avenue, which is about six blocks from the shootout scene. "If I'm curt with you, it's because time is a factor here. I think fast, I talk fast, and I need you guys to act fast if you want to get out of this. So, pretty please, with sugar on top, clean the fucking car."
Keitels use of a handkerchief really adds to the tension. Constantly wiping himself with it like he's trying to keep the slime at bay. Wonder if this movie could get made today.
A modern variation of this story comes up every now and then: Hardcore (1979) Falling Down (1993) Taken (2008) The Equalizer (2014) You Were Never Really Here (2017) Joker (2019) Unhinged (2020)
Possibly one of the greatest scenes ever to be put in a film. Seamless dialogue, Keitel is absolutely brilliant. DeNiro just plays off him like a boss. Hey copper, kkkkccchhh! Fricken love Taxi Driver.
yeah De Niro is a great actor (his early work), but he's much more than just facial expressions, his tone, demeanour, and some memorable lines too. The type of one-man-band actor that could hold your attention for an entire film, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas(although he had the support of some stellar actors on this one). And DeNiro and Scorsese, one of the best, if not the best combo in film-history. Two masters of their craft!
Well yeah, its super simple at first with the pan stopping at tha pimp when he approaches. They have a talk you could've somewhat predicted. Then as he's leaving he's called a cop again by pimp mac Keitel; this is when the angles switch to some over the shoulder dialogue-enhancing frames... So the beginning is mundane, and it's the end of the conversation that is emphasized.
Wonder how many takes they did for that scene ... DeNiro acted awkward the entire time, hardly said anything... just facial expressions and body movements... Keitel’s reactions were equivalent... great actors
It's funny how most movies don't really know how to portray socially awkward moments. The gaps of silence, not knowing when you should turn away, etc. Yet in real life everyday these things happen to us.

brother you don't look hip
+Jose Salazar Lmaoooo.
lol!
Ramon Ramon what do you mean? It's pretty straight forward, Travis is telling the pimp that he's cool. The pimp then rebuts to Travis statement by saying he doesn't look cool.

Totally. It's so creepy.

It's breathtaking really. Hate the man's politics and other things, but as an actor back in the 70s, he was a genius.

Harvey and Bobby... Marty just left the camera rolling and told them to do their thing.... CLASSIC!
Man, when he started talking about her being 12 and doing all that shit to her, I was disgusted. It felt like a real life moment just like the rest of this masterpiece.
I've always felt that the best moment is Keitel around 2:10, it's the only moment where he betrays that even as sleazy as he is, even he is a little creeped out by Travis.
good
Sport looks like Tommy Wiseau.
The moment Bickle decided to kill this guy was when he told him he didn't look hip (2:06)
*_-Thumbs1up!#24-_*
I disagree; De Niro's performance here is equally impressive as that of Keitel, the only difference is that De Niro's performance is so much more subtle and harder to notice the great subtleties.
Deniro looked tall...did he shrink with time??
@@Rob-z7k With age everyone's body deteriorates, hence why De Niro has put on weight, the knee-joints suffer, as does one's back which results in people losing a couple of inches in height.
I know the exact location of that doorway where Travis talks to - and later shoots - Sport. It's in the East Village here in NYC. It still has those same posts and everything. They're just painted a different color now.
Address?
East villiage is trash, makes sense
Just more proof that the village has always been a degenerate hippies wet dream, especially after sunset

Harvey Keitel can play the most sleazy roles
+Zen Jon Keitel was great in City of Industry.......one of my favorite little known films.
as well as the smoothest--like in Pulp Fiction as the Wolfman
Average New York interaction tbh
Surprising how in shape Harvey Keitel is here, muscle definition, delts and I'll bet they weren't hitting the gym or working out like that in the 70s. You rarely see that kind of shape these days. Dudes are big, on whey protein, jacked and those who look like this run marathons, on some crazy diet or focus on cardio like it's their job. We have changed.
Yeah. It’s called chemicals. Atrazine, endocrine disrupters, chemtrails, etc. All in the food, water, and air.

First time i saw this i didn't know it was Harvey Keitel acting. He looked a shitlot like Eddie Van Halen
Lol! I can see that! Funny

He was a marine
He's in amazing shape alright
Lol i know. Guy was dry as a bone
Wiry lmao. That’s what a natural lean man looks like bud.
He almost portrayed Willard in Apocalypse Now.
I LOVE how NYC looks like (and sounds) in this scene, specially in the last frame, when Travis & Iriis walk away. When I see this scene, I kind of feel like walking the sunny streets of New York city and explore the place. I wonder where in town was this shot. By the way, acting in this movie is topnotch. Thank you for posting.
somebody aobve your post already answered this, i think it's called East Village
It's on the south side of 13th Street between Third Avenue (the direction Travis came from) and Second Avenue. The blue hotel sign lasted until the 1980's I think, but it's long gone now.
@@GunHillTrain You have to be either a New York City native, or someone who settled in at some point, cause your description of where these scenes were shot are most detailed and vivid.Thank you very much for reaching out and your input.
@@hazardeur Thank you.
@@mirazusta2002 You're welcome! Yes, I grew up in New York and moved back here in recent years. In 1975 my now ex-wife was living at 19th and Second Avenue, which is about six blocks from the shootout scene. When looking at the climatic scene again, Travis drives in from 2nd Avenue, not 3rd, which would fit with the westbound traffic direction of that street.
I don't think it's possible to look anymore like a pimp if you tried
"If I'm curt with you, it's because time is a factor here. I think fast, I talk fast, and I need you guys to act fast if you want to get out of this. So, pretty please, with sugar on top, clean the fucking car."

Possibly one of the greatest scenes ever to be put in a film. Seamless dialogue, Keitel is absolutely brilliant. DeNiro just plays off him like a boss. Hey copper, kkkkccchhh! Fricken love Taxi Driver.

Harvey Keitel is such a great underrated actor
"But no rough stuff" - so he's got *some* principles then...
he just knows his customers well. 😅
This movie has more relevance today than it did back in the 70's. What a great movie.
Is weird when travis was not armed and not hostile matthew was all careful but when he came with mohawk fully armed he had his guard down
It's cause by the way Travis walked up to him he already knew there was trouble and he was immediately trying to defuse the situation
the agitation of the pimp vs the slowlness of the niro .. that makes the scene epic
"You don't look hip!" LOL
this was....pretty awkard to watch
Chicken 14 It's supposed to be. Travis is extremely awkward, but also very menacing. And Sport is teasing him
just no rough stuff ok?

Yeah i made it 0:39.
Seeing it once decades ago was enough.
Such an uncomfortable silence. Moments like this are so rare in film. Just such electric tension.
2:16 I'm absolutely convinced that this last part is completely improvised.
I loved how young De Niro, Foster, & Keitel were in this; thanks for uploading :-)
Love the scratches in the image, they should release the film just like this, no cleaning, no nothing
I was thinking the same thing but my screen is cracked. Ugh.
Every muscle must be tight.
"you're a funny guy,.........but looks aren't everything". fave actor Harvey Keitel, and he usually gets the best lines.
yeah De Niro is a great actor (his early work), but he's much more than just facial expressions, his tone, demeanour, and some memorable lines too. The type of one-man-band actor that could hold your attention for an entire film, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas(although he had the support of some stellar actors on this one). And DeNiro and Scorsese, one of the best, if not the best combo in film-history. Two masters of their craft!
Lol he couldn't help get the last word in. Had to add, but looks aren't everything lol. Travis was about to slit dudes throat
It’s difficult to steal a scene when you’re sharing it with De Niro...
But Gawd Damn.... Harvey Keitel 👏🏻
This scene really points out that sometimes you just have no idea who you're messing with.
Harvey. Fucking. Keitel.
And the cinematography.... MUUUAH
What's so great about the cinematography in this scene? Genuinely asking. Seemed like pretty standard stuff to me?
Well yeah, its super simple at first with the pan stopping at tha pimp when he approaches. They have a talk you could've somewhat predicted.
Then as he's leaving he's called a cop again by pimp mac Keitel; this is when the angles switch to some over the shoulder dialogue-enhancing frames...
So the beginning is mundane, and it's the end of the conversation that is emphasized.
it's this style that added to the greatness of movies of that era.

Deniro was always dressed so stylishly. Like the way he is dressed he would fit right in any era past the 80’s
‘70’s NY was a different dimension.
Scorsese has to be my favorite director of all time.
1:47, the intense, pent-up threat as Bickle turns round and stares at the pimp... the sense of menace here is tangible
Sport-on the top ten of the sleaziest characters ever in any movie.
No CGI, No camera tricks. Just Act.
The acting talent in this movie is through the roof such a great movie
Everything in this film just works. It was meant to be.
I bet Keitel had no idea how a real pimp dressed or acted…this portrayal is a product of someone’s imagination.
Thats hollywood
Tank top with gold chains was worn back then.
I heard a story he actually rent his apartment to ex-pimp to learn his manners and mindset.
The pimps name, “Sport”, made it hard to take him seriously. I suppose on the next block there is a pimp named Champ.
Lol
Then another pimp named "Chief" and another pimp that goes by "Big Guy."
