My potentially-unpopular opinion is that so many people treat CGM like it's a holy set of unbreakable rules, The One True Way to Do Your Hair, and treat it like a competition to do CGM the best (an impulse I very much understand, as a competitive person!). If I want to wet brush my hair instead of finger detangle or use a wide-tooth comb, I will - it's fine. If I want to use a clarifying shampoo every couple weeks to remove buildup, I will - again, it's fine. There's no reward for being the best at CGM and while I think there's some great overarching ideas within it, the rigid Lorraine Massey version just does. not. work. on my hair, and I needed to actually be okay with the idea that I'm "doing it wrong."

I agree with you, one thing I would add to the porosity talk is that Sun damage can increase the porosity of your hair. I live in a very sunny climate (South Africa) and the top layer of my hair that gets sun most days is much more damaged than the lower layers. Love the video Courtney 😀

There's a lot of misconception about porosity, yes... but the one thing I 'miss' in the explanation is that the cuticle layer is a layer that reacts on the environment/humidity. The layer can be damaged or even destroyed and stay always 'open' or partly 'open' but the cuticles of healthy hair with a "medium porosity" don't stay or sit in just one position the entire time: the cuticles react to the environment, for example to warmth (which often have more humidity in the air) or cold, or a very misty/foggy day ... in which we can't see the humidity but it's there (like in a bathroom with a lot of steam) . Although hair can be healthy, it will react to the steam, mist or on the opposite dry air so the cuticles go from (almost) close to a little lifted to more lifted and back all the time. So if hair absorb easily and it's healthy as well, it absorbs due to the reaction of the cuticles. When hair is high porosity due to any kind of damage, parts of the cuticle layer can't close properly or in worst scenario the layer is partly gone (gaps) the cuticles can't work like they should (open and close and vice versa) . Fine or very fine hair is more fragile , and while the cuticle layer is thinner (and because this hairtype misses the medula which thick hair has) it's also more prone to damage even when there's no hairdye or heat damage involved... and that can make the level of very fine natural hair more high porosity.

I started the CGM when we first went into lockdown, and while it was a great daily distraction to style my hair daily and nurture my natural wave pattern, I knew there was no way it was feasible for me to put so much time into it once I went back to work. I am grateful that I had that time to invest in the health of my hair, but that journey will require a lot more patience and grace if you're leading a normal busy life. These days I wear my natural hair down a lot more than I ever did, and don't even mind the less than stellar wash day results, but I still end up pulling it back a few times a week because I can't be bothered to restyle it every day. I had to learn that just because I loved my wavy hair finally, it didn't mean I had to let it stress me out and drain me of my time and money.

@@SparkyPeaches Lol I'm sorry you're so offended, but if you have to do things to MAKE your hair appear curly, then it isn't really curly. I just don't see the point of anyone pretending their hair is something it isn't. It's not about us naturally curly haired girls being "gate keepers," it's just being realistic. I don't straighten my curly hair with a flat iron every day and then pretend it's naturally straight lol. If I have to make it straight by manipulation, then it isn't straight. Same thing applies to curls. And frankly it's a little annoying when women with pretty much straight hair with a little bit of wave think they understand the challenges of having actual curly hair. Real curls are very hard to take care of and keep healthy, and here comes some girl with a few loose waves going "Oh I TOTALLY understand..." 🥴
Like, no, you really don't. But sorry if me calling people out on their delusions upsets you

@@tatersprout Exactly. My hair is curly, but I don't claim to have coils because I don't. So why do women with waves insist that they have curls? I don't have to scrunch my hair or blow dry it a certain way or use any kind of product to make my hair curly, it just is. As far as I'm concerned that's what defines actually curly hair

Mine is: “You need to cowash and use products to have more than four days without washing your hair.” That’s what I’m told on a daily basis. First, my hair can’t do a cowash. I live in Florida and I have to wash every day or every other day. I sweat and it is sticky and smells like I’ve been outside all day. I’m a teacher and I’m constantly doing things outside my classroom to engage my students. I’m extreme oily / dry scalp. I’ve been focusing on scalp care for about a year and I’ve noticed a difference in my hair.
I can’t cowash because it’s really heavy on my hair. I wash my hair with shampoo every day or every other day. I also clarifiy at least once a week or two times a week. My hair looks healthy and I barely get split ends anymore.

You make good common sense to me, and support you for giving your opinions! I had hair to die for, some would say. Long naturally wavy/curly (no coloring), volume, sheen matched with proper layering. Wake up in the morning, put fingers thru my hair, and ready to go....until there came a time in my life of huge stress, and I was flung into anxiety/panic attack 24/7 Hell. My hair went completely straight as a board, lifeless, damaged looking, dull, you name it. It was a long time until the anxiety eased up a tad, and as it did my hair began to recover some, for nothing otherwise helped.

Its so funny that it did that, because if I was at home, my brushed out hair would have laid flat like yours!!

100% agree on porosity. The definition in hair terms was about damage. It was an assessment tool for a colorist before doing a color treatment, so they didn’t give you a chemical hair cut. And high porosity (undyed or not chemically treated) can be because of sun damage, heat damage, or even hard water damage.

Thank you explaining the porosity stuff so thoroughly! Very helpful. I have a loose curl pattern and med-coarse hair, so it would seem I’m not set up to have high porosity hair but man oh man I have a dry scalp. Oil? What oil? I guess that factor (combined with years of straightening - 1 year into curly now) is enough to make my hair “turn” med-high porosity. There is not enough moisture in the world…

I saw a video a while ago (it may have been from Marisacurls, but I can’t remember for sure) where they said we are looking at protein/moisture balance incorrectly. It’s not a scale with moisture on one end and protein on the other and you’re trying to aim for the middle. Protein and moisture have their own separate scales with low moisture on one end and high moisture on the other (likewise with protein). Thus your hair could need both moisture and protein, or be fine on protein but need more moisture, etc. it made sense to me, what are your thoughts?

    • @TesriaT
      @TesriaT Рік тому

Yes, I've come to this conclusion myself. If you overload then adding more of the other thing can help (eg add some structure to over-moisturised hair or soften brittle hair) while you recover from the overload, which is convenient, but they are their own scales.

  • @janetharrison6705

Great video again, makes a lot of sense and made me think! What I did gain most from it though was the fact that I can have a break from styling without my curly girl routine coming to any harm. Yes, I am new to all this (10 weeks) and can feel myself getting overly stressed with the whole process. It's taking over my life and I need a break from the daily refreshes I have to do. A question: when you are resting from styling - do you just shampoo, condition and then comb through and leave it ? Do you comb/brush it through on the following days? Am sure mine would go frizzy and as it is chin length I cannot put it up. Congratulations on your pregnancy.

I have a very controversial and unpopular opinion that there is no such thing as "scalp training". The production of oil by your sebaceous glands is controlled by genetics. If not washing could make them produce less oil, then people with oily skin could wash their face less often and clear up their oily skin. I think anyone with oily skin will disagree with that. The only thing scalp training does is get you used to dirtier hair. If that is what you want then go for it, there is nothing wrong with that. But there is also nothing wrong with washing your hair every day if that is what you want to do.

One thing that can help oily skin produce less oil is to put oil on it. Making sure your skin is well moisturized can lessen the amount of natural oils you produce. It might not lessen it to the point that you don’t feel oily anymore, but it’s definitely a thing. I have really dry skin but my hair would get so oily so quickly. Now that I leave the natural oils in for longer, my scalp doesn’t need to produce as many oils so it doesn’t get greasy looking for days, but it took months of greasy looking hair to get to that point.

I have a question. Recently I have a conviction that the Lord doesn't want me to cut my hair (and still studying it). My curls are stretching out because my hair has gotten so long. I still can't brush my hair because it gets very frizzy and poofy🤪. But at the same time I'm losing my curl pattern and it looks weird. My hair is balanced as far as protein and moisture go. I used to be able to put my hair in a pineapple and my curls would be fine, now they get all weird like. I really want to cut my hair shorter because my hair is very heavy, but I don't think I should. Do you have any tips for trying to bring curls back even when it's weighed down? I know it sounds funny, but I have seen people do it but it isn't working for me. Was wondering if you had any suggestions. 🤷‍♀️

Here's an unpopular opinion: Hair type charts are useless and inaccurate. Most people whose hair is considered wavy have loosely curly hair. Some people whose hair is considered very curly in fact have very wavy hair.

Agreed! My hair would probably be considered somewhere between 2a-2b depending on the wash day, but if you bother to look at it either directly from above or below, you'll notice that my "waves" aren't just bends in the hair like most people describe waves -- they're loose spirals. They take a while to do a full spiral, but they're not really bends. It's so strange to me that some people will ascribe these shapes to wavey and curly hair but then will ultimately decide to categorize it by the tightness of their curl or wave pattern.

    Some unpopular opinions:
*DIY flaxseed gel actually can be potentially harmful, especially for those prone to hygral fatigue, over moisturization, or scalp issues stemming from the scalp staying wet too long or the bacteria growth of the unpreserved gel.
*Denman styling and other styling methods that place a significant amount of tension on the scalp should not be promoted quite so often. Or there should at least be a disclaimer at the start of these routine videos that using these styling methods frequently can result in traction alopecia for some individuals. Also, it just seems fishy that absolutely everyone in curly spaces feels like they have to Denman style, in order to have the 'right' kind of curls so everyone's unique curls end up looking the same.
*Most of the time an issue you're having with your hair is going to be solved by doing less or accepting your hair, not by buying more products (but hair influencers will generally tell you otherwise).

I would say that if the amount of your *natural* oils makes your hair *naturally* have more friction and start increasing porosity as it grows, it could still qualify as "natural high porosity" tho :)

    My Unpopular Opinions
    1. Heat styling, even as often as once or twice a week, doesn't necessarily damage your curl pattern.
If your hair is permed, you can still be part of the curly community
Curly hair is not necessarily sexier that straight hair. No texture shaming
