I live in a desert country. It is hot and dry for most of the year, UNLESS I visit the main city where it's humid because of the nearby ocean. ACs are always on indoors which dries out hair even more. So going glycerin free (styling products only) for a while just made sense, otherwise my already dry hair would become drier because there was no water in the air. It also really helped me figure out some causes of frizz (mainly a lack of protein which made sense because I was also protein free for a while) and this helped me control the moisture level of my hair. However, I still appreciate glycerin in my products (preferably lower in the ingredients, otherwise I use less product) and it was really nice during the more humid parts of the year. I think having a set of products to switch out for the seasons is a good idea for anyone in such climates. Love your videos!
Where I live in the Indianapolis area it is humid ALL YEAR LONG. I tried to do glycerin according to degrees but I have just gone to a much simpler formula that works for me after experimenting. Heat is on in the house…glycerin…warm enough to open the windows/have the air conditioning on…no glycerin. That is what works for my hair 🤷🏻♀️
I find that as long as I clarify regularly, glycerin doesn’t bother my hair, even with my year-round dew point in the 80’s. Your hair looks amazing in this video.
I'm in Colorado, and besides glycerin, I have to avoid hyaluronic acid (Curlsmith hydro style flexi- jelly, and Pacifica Pineapple Curls defining cream) disastrous 😐 I [always] finish with Rock Hard Gelee or Harrys! Try and try as I might, no time of year can I get these to work. Sigh
Thank you Courtney for explaining this. Have you tried Maui Moisture Curl Quench + Coconut Oil Ultra - Hold Gel. It states for thick curly hair, so I really don't know how it will work for your hair type. I have course hair and I love it. I find it work s really well with soaking wet hair, in the flip, coat, scrunch method, which I find works the best for me. Anyway, it is glycerin heavy (3rd ingredient) , but it has aloe leaf juice & water in the 1st & 2nd ingredients. It smells so good, too. Right now, in Maine, we are in the dead of winter and my hair and curls are doing really well!

The other day it was 90% humidity with 28 degrees dew point early in the morning and it was only going to dry out more as the day went on. Dew points here have been regularly in the 20s and 10s for the past few weeks. Keeping my hair moisturized has been a challenge.
100% agreed. It is the oil ratio to glycerin in your two favorites that stop the issues. Babassu is incredibly nourishing and sealing oil in the Curlsmith, and the argan oil to glycerin might be the winning ticket in the Creme of Nature.
I like when you get all sciency :). Question: since Most of us probably spend most of our time indoors, aren't the indoors dew points more important? Of course these depend on the outdoors dew points, but they are still different, aren't they?

Strange though, that glycerine locks moisture into my skin? Winter hands demand it--sometimes pure glycerine is the only thing that keeps hands from hurting.
Since it has to do with dew poinys...which change change from day to day or within one day even...I'm just gonna opt out of glycerin. If you live in a stable climate you may have better luck with it..

I was laughing because I had no idea that weather could effect hair and found that funny. I just didn't word it very well I guess and it didn't come across right.
I hate that glycerin has become a boogeyman. I use glycerin in humidity and as long as my hair is healthy and moisturized, glycerin isn’t an issue for me. My most effective frizz control products, especially in high dew points, have glycerin. It’s about balance in hair and product formula.
it really depends on your hair's porosity and texture, just because it's glycerin free, there might be other heavier ingredients getting in the way of moisturizing your hair, so determine that for yourself. kinky curly knot today + curl custard are both glycerin free and work quite well on my medium-fine curls!

I've been using Jessicurl glycerin free fragrance free leave-in and homemade flax gel in Colorado's low dew points lately. For me it seems to be working but I'm still figuring out what works for me and I am taking it slow as I my skin is VERY VERY sensitive to many chemicals used in many fragrances.
So do we just need to pay attention to the temperature rather than that and the humidity? I live in Scotland where it rains, frequently, but it's often cold (and miserable really lol!). Is it still ok to use glycerin when the temp is between 1-10 degrees Celsius but raining?
Hey Fern! I tried the twist weather up gel recently. Smells nice, hair shiny, nice slip. LIGHT HOLD on my fine 2c hair. Was frizzy by day 2 and I used a decent amount of product. I live in Maryland where it's still hot and pretty humid and this was not my HG product. I was so bummed because I've heard good things about this line.
It is better for me when it's colder, but I still live in a normally humid area so I typically use products that have glycerin way down the ingredients list😊
So basically, living in Costa Rica I should never use glycerin. We never get below 60 except maybe at night in December. And yet, ALL of our products have glycerin.
It does in high humidity/dew points (above 60 degrees Fahrenheit) because glycerin grabs onto the water in the air and pulls it into your hair strands...which can cause the frizz.

I just started using herbal essence mousse. I LOVE IT. Small pump, scrunch it in and air dry. My hair stays where I want it, no frizz. AMAZING.

I don’t think so. As buildings tend to be pretty porous, I think indoor and outdoor dewpoints are pretty comparable.

Forced hot air heat in my house beginning November, ending end of April-ish. Very dry inside air.
It can be so tough!! If you find your hair is dry during this time, try adding more moisturizing products.

If I use glycerin in my styling products I get SOO weighed down even after one use. I can use them in my shampoo/conditioners though.

I see why my hair is freeze in the summer. Those are the products I use.

I think how your hair reacts to glycerin depends on its porosity. The higher the porosity, the more it will react to glycerin.
