    I had to give the discus away to a good home. It was a tough decision but it was causing a huge amount of stress coming in everyday and wondering if I would find another dead fish like we did a few weeks back. Because I was no longer enjoying the fish...how could I with that kind of anxiety, I knew I could no longer give them the optimal care they deserve so I got in contact with Matt and, well, you'll see in the video. Onwards and upwards though and I thoroughly enjoyed the past year and a bit that I have had the privilege of owning the Discus. The ups and the downs.

      I'll be grieving for a bit. They brought so much joy as the first thing to see as you walk into the room when filming. Didn't help that as your Merch pops up after the video, two discus sweatshirts appear. This has to be a horrible decision making process for you. You have to love your fish, if they bring you dread, i can't think of a better caregiver to take over than Matt. Big Love at you, that was tough. 💕

    The exact reason why I do not keep higher maintenance fish. For me it's about the peace, the calm of a natural aquarium scape in which the fish can thrive, explore without me interfering too much. Also seeing plants thriving is equally satisfying to me as seeing healthy fish.

    Thats the reason i never got Dicus for myself.
    They are absolutely stunning fish, but its so hard too keep them and even after 20 years of experience they often just die away without any obvious reason.
    Keep it simple and enjoy your hobby as much as possible, best way to do it :)

    • @invaderjoshua6280
      @invaderjoshua6280 2 роки тому +3

      No they don’t. You just suck at fish keeping even after 20 years then. Give them soft warm water and lots of food like any large SA cichlid and they’ll thrive and breed easy. You don’t even need to do water changes if you have a little bit of plants, and extra bio media. Discus just like Oscar’s, Uaru, and Severums , etc are easy to keep.

    • @invaderjoshua6280
      @invaderjoshua6280 2 роки тому +3

      There is no such thing as a fish that dies easy. The only reasons your fish died was if it had horrendously wrong water conditions for a long length. Of time, or you weren’t feeding it enough, or it was in a tank with the wrong tank mates. A dwarf gourami is not picky with water or food but is territorial. 99% chance another fish was killing them. Or you lacked the correct amount of bio media and ammonia built up in the tank.

      @@ignatiuspauta5612 Sorry just ticks me off that people claim they have experience but yet they are letting pets die. They are living beings. People tend to purposely make discus harder to keep because for some wierd reason it’s been spread around that even though these fish live in the same water as Oscar’s and Severums that they need completely different living conditions. People are choosing to ignore common sense and hurting their pets. I have very very little patience for animal abuse. If he had said he was new to fish keeping I would have just given him info and not been angry. But he brought up he has 20 YEARS of experience. At this point he shouldn’t be aloud to keep pets anymore.

    At this time of year it is healthy and encouraged to self evaluate what is working and what isn't. Seeing this being applied here is wonderful, because your hobbies are a part of your life and if something isn't working out or needs to change to bring yourself more joy, IT SHOULD BE DONE.
    Watching the care and willingness to learn and grow that MD shows us, his desire to always provide the best environment for his fish without compromising his enjoyment and ability to provide what is necessary is a great role model for anyone in any hobby or pursuit.
    The Discus went to a fantastic home. While I will initially miss seeing them in the room, I am eager to see what comes next, just as I hope we all are for ourselves in our lives.

    This is something I feel people need to see more often. Many people hold onto fish they don’t care about until they basically die, or try and sell them with the tank, which many people aren’t looking for (I have been looking on marketplace recently at tanks, and you have these giant fish in tiny tanks they are trying to sell. It’s really sad). Showing that one, it’s okay to feel like you cant look after them or that you can’t give them the best care, and two, that giving them away to people you know will care for them or back to the pet store is a great option 🤗.
    So yeah haha, thank you so much for making this video and showing this part of the hobby

Some folks love massive challenges and can't seem to do without them. Money, time and effort is the cost they are more than happy to spend. Their success drives them. Most hobbyist like simple and easy while keeping time and cost to a minimum. Again, it's their successes that drives them. During the last few years you have found what works, what you like and your successes are driving you! Concerning the discus, you came to a very educated and conscientious decision. I applaud you. Hopefully this may help others do the same.

    I sure understand about your discuss decision. It is so reassuring to you that they have a new good home. It is AWFUL to be on guard around our fish. We can get so attached to them. I like peaceful calm hardy fish. I have guppies, a plucky Pleco, a few Bettas, and some unique Gambusia hardy mosquito fish. I keep the drama to a minimum. Oh, and 2 plain comet goldfish. The Gambusia and the goldfish are all together in a big tank. Gambusia females get too nippy with the guppy fins so I separated them. All is fine now. Lots of plants and snails. USA

    Hey MD, love the channel so far, very clear and relaxed explanations, great content and superb video quality! Sad to see about your discus but I can totally relate and think you made a great decision. Would love to see you tackle caridina shrimp breeding some time. I've been doing it for a couple of years now and still experiencing difficulties to overcome. Would be very interested in your take on it, but of course all in due time. Keep up the great vids, i'll be watching!

    Exactly what other have already mentioned. Do what makes you happy. I’m glad you made the right decision for your discus. Have considered making that aquarium into an Altum angelfish aquarium?

    I think you did the best .discus needs warm water but plants need cool water, so you did the right thing and I think your fish will be thankful too.

    Good to see you made an episode of this. I think to many people keep struggling on, getting more stressed and won't admit that this is just not the kind of fish for them.
    It's painful when it goes like this, but a new lesson is learned by experience.
    Good to give them a chance to get a better fitting home.
    Personally I don't really like Discus, they are beautiful colored and are gentle souls, well most of them. But not the fish I love to watch. By others I love to watch them for a short time, because they are beautiful, but I find them a bit boring after a while.
    To each their own.
    Can't wait to see what you do with the tank!

    As a discus keeper i can understand that decision. I have 12 stendker and this is one job and a half, but it is also the ONLY thing i do. For now i could not imagine doing any more then this single big tank.
    Well you said something really important and sometimes it is hard to realise for ourselves....to do what we enjoy.
    You are one honest man i like that, greets from Germany.

      Andre, what is the correct pronunciation of süßwassertang?
      I have not studied German in decades, and my brain wants it to be soos-wasser-tang, but I don't ever hear anyone saying it that way.

    • @andrep1784
      @andrep1784 2 роки тому +2

      @@THandP_org well it'll be like sooss - vasser - tung
      I guess. Means freshwater (sort of) algee.

    I would love to see you do a proper competition tank. You’ve got so many plants and so much hard scape that you could easily do a really awesome show tank. Something that George Farmer would be jealous of.
