I used to be a s&w 686 guy. I carried that gun for 10 years back in the 90's and into the 2000's. It only had a 3.5" barrel, but I trusted that gun. I ran 115gr corbon and federal 125gr hollow points back when both rounds were still loaded 'hot'. I was a little shocked after a 12 year hiatus, that federal and corbon are both so weak now.

Lower power is because of police vests. I think all factory pistol ammo is less than 500 foot pounds at mussel

Ruger came out smelling like a rose today!! They went beyond their part to rework your revolver! I think part of it is because you have so many UA-cam followers and they wanted to impress your viewers. I think everyone was taken back on what they did especially that new bronzed finish they gave you. It is not only a workhorse of a pistol, but now in displayable beauty! WoWW!! Double WOWW!! I Purchased new back in 1973 a Ruger Service-Six and as it was not as nicely pretty as the GP100, it had some improvements that mine didnt have. Namely adjustable sights, and nice big grips. I replaced my grips right away with some custom made black walnut grips, and had to deal with the non adjustable sights. Still it was a tank! A local guy who owned a gunshop sold me at a very good price some hot loads he put together, and they were so hot , the cases split, but the Service-Six didn't bat an eye on any of those hot loads!! What a revolver!! It turned out to be a great pistol to shoot!! The one i had the most fun shooting! Something tells me you will do the same as me and it will become your favorite gun too!!

I put the gauge in and the gap on 686 was .009 bordering .010. The 629 is .003 to .004. I called smith and they said up to .010 is allowed. Should I be worried about a velocity loss? @williammcconnell9501 3 роки тому +3

That sure is a beautiful gun. The case sticking is not a small issue. May I suggest you start with a very through cleaning of the cylinder chambers. That means the vigorous use of solvents or a Breakfree type cleaner plus a lot of elbow grease with brushes. A lead or crud buildup can create case sticking. But at the very least a super clean cylinder will allow you to give it an accurate inspection.
My pure guess is that you've had rough cylinder walls all along and the "fixing" of the gun gave you much higher pressures along with much higher velocities. I doubt Ruger uses hot ammo to test fire there guns before leaving the custom shop, so the problem remained invisible. But it also suggests Ruger did not do a close inspection of the cylinders.
I am suggesting that beyond the cleaning, the problem still belongs to Ruger and they are best equipped to handle it. Besides, all these presumptions could be wrong. Ruger is still best equipped to make the gun run 100%.
Please let us know how it goes.

Just found this video, Did they say what the problem was? You said "shot out", but wasn't the GP100 made to shoot 357 all day, so that shouldn't be happening right? Or am i misunderstanding something?
(Reason i'm asking, is i am looking to replace my 686 with a GP100 as i hate that the screws get loose now and again on the 686. So i check them after each visit to the range, have loctited the cylinder axis and the strain screw. Both caused me some problems. The cylinder axis wokred itself loose several times and made it almost impossible to swing out the cylinder without bending the axis. And the strain screw unscrewed itself very slowly over time, meaning the trigger got lighter and lighter, and suddenly the rounds wouldn't go off reliably anymore in DA. My 686 is over 10 years old now, and it aparft from 1 box of 38sp it only ever got fed 357 mag)

Wow! Ruger steps up to the plate time and time again. I'm a Ruger fan from 1972. My first .357 was a Service-Six. Great gun! Great Customer Service has been their front runner way before I ever got acquainted with them. Ruger runs in my veins , so do BMW motorcycles, but we can keep the conversation to Ruger here. I know you're Very Happy with your pistol. Bear and Moose loads need to be shot from a .44 Magnum rather than a .357. , although in a pinch, it'll still put them down if push comes to shove and there's nothing else to shoot them with. A Ruger Redhawk in 44, or even a GP 100 in a 44 Magnum will do that job very nicely!

When you get a load that shoots in a pistol at the same speed that's marked on the box, it is a fluke. It is not by Design. Ammo is tested in test barrels that have no Barrel cylinder gap, and have a particular distance to the rifling and they're unvented. For pistol loads it's usually a 5 in, or at least used to be primarily a 5-in test Barrel. I know that there was a longer one but I cannot remember what that length was. One other caveat. Several rugers back in the 1970s at least in the security six, the barrel cylinder Gap was .0 0 15. Consistent measurement across the board. I have recently found an early '80s Ruger that has a barrel cylinder gap of twice that. Which is really concerning to me. That is where much of your velocity is lost.
You're getting almost exactly what I would have expected from a 6-in barrel and a properly fitted firearm. As for getting the cases out of that cylinder, I suggest you get a good snug wool mop and put some lapping Compound on it, like JB Moore lapping compound and polish those chambers. My guess is that Bronze finish is a bit on the rough side and needs to be polished out. And a slight hampering of the chamber mouth might not be a bad idea either.
You could also use flitz to polish the chambers or semi chrome polish would probably work as well.
