The fact that the GP100 is still in production is a testament to it's quality.
I bought mine from a friend about 5 yrs ago.
Its a 6 " stainless model wich was never fired b4 igot it(well, maybe 50 rds ).I got it for 300 euros ($300 US).As i said almost in brandnew condition. All i csn say about it is :"it's perfect".
Great guns.Well build.
Very good review. Couldn't have said it better myself. Most of my guns are Ruger. Everything they make is solid.
Best thing is there 100 % made in America 🇺🇸
All the small parts are made in Mexico and Indonesia just the frame and cylinder are made in America 🇺🇸

7.5" SRH 44 for the woods, 4" GP100 357 and SP101 357 for the city 😁
Wheel guns rule!!! Love my GP 100.
It'll be my 1st handgun to own here in 2023. I will be ordering the Ruger gp100 Wiley clapp talo edition 357mag in 3"barrel Hawkeye matte stainless steel finish. I did research on 357mag revolvers from taurus to S&W and found that the Ruger family is the best affordable reliable for our family as we go camping, fishing, hiking ourselves. We live in western state Colorado and our getaways are these beautiful rocky mtns full of rivers, streams, lakes and scenery. We decided to make this choice to collaborate with our Henry big boy All Weather lever action in 357mag. We will cycle federal premium hammerdown 357mag 170gr bhp and Underwood 38spl +p 158gr hard cast keith for target shooting for both firearms. This will help us stay with good home defense and hunting ammo. Good video and thank you for informing us revolver owners. Nice looking 4 inch barrel you have too. Can't wait til we receive ours soon.
Not to mention that when shot in the forehead it will blow the entire top of your head off leaving only the nose and mouth in tack
I just recently got mine which is exactly like this, except it's the seven shooter model with different grips. I'm so glad this gun turned out so tough and reliable. I didn't really know much about guns when I bought it, yet it's such a high quality revolver that I ended up getting. I'm so thankful for it.
This is a Revolver fit for a King... forget about the blue collar guy. It is what it is.... and its an all around gem and superb insurance policy... for life... what more can one want?
+El Rico What I mean by blue collar is the feel of it. It’s heavy, sturdy, utilitarian. I don’t consider it to be unrefined in the realm of production, off the shelf guns.
Mine, and use that term loosely, as it belongs to my wife, is the optimum balance of weight, accuracy, reliability and astetics. It is most pleasing to the eye, on top of everything else. Enough that when my daughter requested a hand gun, this is what I purchased for her. This is the double-action revolver I taught my wife and kids to shoot. That statement shows my confidence in this firearm.
I JUST GOT A GP100 SHE S A BEAST 💪
Still one of my favorite handguns. Always puts a grin on my face.
Ruger is the king of the revolvers. I have the 6 inch. Its my woods n water go to.
And the 357 mag is the king of handgun calibers. Great review. Keep on keeping on. And hello.from west ky
My favorite handgun to shoot, comfortable and fun and doesn't beat you up
The best 357 ever.
And you don't have to deal with the SW trigger lock.
You have done a great job describing this Ruger GP100. Although I haven't shot a GP100 yet, for many years I owned a Ruger Service-Six and I can tell you this one you have here is Everything that that the Service-Six is wants to have. The beefier design for recoil control is probably what you notice the most. Ruger came out with a stainless bull barrel , but it wasn't practical for carry because it literally felt like a rock in your pocket. It was HEAVY. This one, the GP 100 has built into it great recoil control just as it sits. If you desire, you can magnaport this one, but there's really no need for that. The other thing I really like is the grips . It fits your hand. You don't have to right off the bat change the grips like I did with my Service-Six. The grips mine came with were narrow and didn't fit my hand well. The gun was so new back then, 1974, neither Ruger or even pacmeyer offered any alternative grips. I had some custom grips made to fix that challenge.
Ruger did their homework on the GP100. Everything about this gun reeks of Quality. Ingenuity, and Integrity!! If you ever have any issues with it, Ruger Customer Service steps up to the plate!! There is no better Revolver, and there is no better gun maker than Ruger.
I like the GP100's beefy looks. The 6 inch barrel model makes .357magnum loads downright pleasant to shoot. I purposely picked this big recoil taming chunk of a revolver because I'm a smallish woman.
"And though she be but little....she is fierce..."
You Rock!
Gotta love a gal with a big 357 mag!
I just saw your awesome video, I know it’s been published 3 years ago, I wanted to say that what I like more about gp100 is the full disassembly, and the ruger after sale service, I was thinking about buying one, this is how I came across your video, and my intents to by the 7 rounds one for camping, and range fun, thanks for your video, and the info you gave
As they say..."user friendly".
I have owned a Ruger Security Six since 1976 and still carry it as a concealed weapon. I carry it in a shoulder holster. In warm weather, I carry a Ruger LCRx in a .38 Special as a "pocket pistol". Last year I bought a Ruger GP100 Match Champion. I carry it hunting and also keep it on the night stand at my house. I still use the Security Six for a concealed weapon because it's lighter and has a slightly shorter barrel. But the Match Champion is built like a tank, has better sights, and slightly more accurate.
I’ve owned one of these for about 4 years now. I also regularly carry an SP101. Great review.
Great video and great gun! I took a revolver class with my GP100, and I love it! What an awesome gun! And I agree that the front sight upgrade is a good call! Thanks!
Just found your channel, I own three gp-100's 44spl,357mag,327 mag. I love all three ,very tough, accurate, great control.
I have the GP100 6 inch it’s my every day Carry! I wear a vest over my holster never had a problem. To each is own you can carry 15 rounds in a semi auto. But if I hit you with one 357 Magnum round traveling 1500 a second! I can tell you that you are not going to be wanting to continue with whatever you were planning if you can! Not saying there is anything wrong with semi auto I own them to! But this revolver is the most accurate pistol I have ever shot. Built like a tank and reliable as ever unless you lose your fingers or your hands! It is going to shoot! Great Video I can’t say enough about this gun! Thanks god bless
I love Ruger revolvers. I’ve had the GP100 Match Champion for about six years and have zero complaints. Great video!
I have owned a GP100 in the past and I loved it I think I am going to get another one your video was very good and I live in Baton Rouge thanks homie
Another brother from LA! Been torn between a 686 and a gp100 and I believe I now have an answer. Thanks!
Great video. I have a stainless steel Security Six in .357 Mag with 4” barrel that I love to shoot. It’s my favorite of all my guns.
Great review 👍. I just laid a 1989 SS 4" away at a pawn shop. It's like new with old style wood/rubber grips. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and knowledge.
Excellent vid, thanks a lot. I own both the Ruger Security Six and the GP100. What makes the Rugers so durable and beefy is also the fact that the frame is made out of one piece. Besides, this kind of construction makes it easy to disassemble and reassemble the gun.
Great video! 👍 I love the Hell outta my GP100. I bought the 3" model, and like you said, it'll eat a Steady diet of full house .357 ALL DAY! I usually run 158 grainers thru it with No Problems, and at 40 oz it's like shooting a .22! I've got an SP101 with the 4.2" barrel that's a Great Shooter too.
I have a .357 GP100 with 3" barrel and it balances great. The weight of the gun gives the bullet time to exit the barrel before the recoil kicks it up. The finger notches in my wooden grip makes it seem like the gun is holding my hand as my hand holds the gun. It's a little pricey, but very nice.
Thanks for the video, I'm very interested in the GP100 and you taught me some new stuff.
The reason gp100 are so strong there built on redhawk frame I have 4000 rounds thru my gp100 I bought in 1992 and it’s as tight as the day I bought it my favorite load is 180 gr hard cast for hunting and 158gr sjhp for defense nice revolver bud
I own this one too, no complaints. Thank you for sharing your opinions and video. 😊
Great review! Some practical straight up information about this gun. Thanks for posting.
The GP100 was my first firearm 30 years ago. I used to carry it in a Bianchi shoulder rig. It is a workhorse for sure. My current EDC is a Sig P365. Still enjoy shooting my GP100 4” stainless.
I carry the sp101 357 magnum with the 4.2 inch barrel. When I first bought it I traded my Smith and Wesson model 65 in on it thinking it was the gp100 at first, BUT I still love it and it's my edc even though finding the right holster for it has been a real chore since I carry iwb and I'm left handed.
I also love mine.
I like the feel of the stock grips that came with it the wood and rubber grips. No complaints at all.
Sounds like the same grips I have on mine, love them!
Glad I saw your video, I was going to get the s&w 686, now it's the ruger gp 100 all the way!
I own both, they are both great guns.
Great video. Trying to decide between this and S&W 686. You brought out several good points on the Ruger. I think I just decided 👍🏻
Ive had both. Ruger wins by far
Rugers customer service is the best of any i have ever dealt with besides Henry. Henry is awesome too! Turn around time at Ruger was 16 days and free shipping, for a minor problem i could have fixed myself honestly.
I just got a 686 ssr pro series, and i prefer S&W, but their QC has gone down the drain. My front sight was bent from the factory. Also with the ruger, it’s easier to change the front sight yourself.
Get both
@@rainsong7327 the trigger on my gp 100 is better
I loved my Smitty 686 and GP100. I still really love my Taurus Tracker
I have a number of revolvers and as far as shooting .357 Magnum the GP100 is my favorite. So much so that I just ordered the 7 shot GP100 to go along with the one you showed.
Here at my homestead I have mine coupled with a Henry Big Boy in 357 mag... what a great combo that shoots the same ammo... BTW what a great review
I love mine! My 12 yr old likes shooting 357 through it. My 8 yr old likes 38 special. It's a beast and will shoot everything. As big as it is, it carries comfortably in a belly band holster. Happy customer here!
Agree on the 4" being more balanced especially for the .357 magnum. Usually prefer S&W however my LCR and Blackhawks have been great and have been as satisfied with at 686 2.5" PC is making me look at this firearm as they just seem to work even if the triggers may be a bit more robust or less smooth. Thanks for the video, sir.
Good review. Thanks for asking for honest feedback.
Love my 357s but the Redhawk 4" 44 Mag is super nice loaded a little light. Nice video!
I put one of these on layaway at my local gun shop last month because I have always wanted one. I had a Smith 686 and a 629, both are very good guns but I wanted one that was built like the Ruger. I've had Taurus revolvers that were very reliable and functional but they are not of the same quality as a Smith or Ruger. Thanks for the video.
I have a GP100 22 LR 10-shot with a 5.5 inch half-lug barrel. A fiber optic green front sight held in steel along with a white outline adjustable rear sight. Love it and put a full rubber recoil padded Hogue grip on it.
Saw your video and purchased a Match Champion. Video was well done.
Just bought my fifth Ruger revolver, love 'em
Great review and straightforward video. Thanks for the work!
I have one on layaway. I have a ruger security six 6 inch barrel and I have a Smith and Wesson model 28-2. I find so much joy in a double action revolver. I just shot a Springfield Range officer 9mm with the fiber optic front sight qnd will be putting 1 on my gp and possibly on my SR Commander chambered in 45.
I have a lot of favorite things in my life: A favorite knife, a favorite axe, a favorite pair of winter gloves, a favorite car etc... Never had a favorite gun until i got a gp100. Got the 6 inch stainless and will never get rid of it
Great video and a really good overview of the GP100. I have two of them - the TALO GP100 Stainless 3" Wiley Clapp and the TALO GP100 Stainless 6" Unfluted. Both are keepers. Keep posting excellent videos! Scott
I appreciate the encouragement. There’s more coming, but since no one is handing me free guns the reviews are subject to my own budget.
I fully understand the financial side of things. I will be adding content to my channel soon. I added the same fiber optic front sight on my 6" GP and it made a huge difference. Scott
Yes it did. This was my first revolver, doubt it’ll be my last based on how I’ve taken to this one.
I'm old so I prefer revolvers and lever actions for my non-work guns.
These Ruger revolvers are top notch guns. My first one was purchased in the 70s and was called a Service-Six. It came with hand grips that were too small for my hands and I replaced them with walnut grips that fit my hand perfectly. This gun even back then was a heavy built gun made to take real punishment. Back then it also came with a pin to field dress it. They have perfected the gun in the GP 100. Mine had factory set sights (non adjustable) for both front and rear. This one is adjustable. Mine was also a 6 shooter. There are optional one more shell cylinders available. 6 is enough. It teaches you to make each shot count. It is powerful enough to knock down whatever you're shooting at. A copper jacketed hollow point fired through this gun can do damage beyond any expectations! It is one tough gun. Yes, its a little heavy, but I like how it feels in my hand. You can sight in quickly, and you can control your hits well with this revolver.
Great video, Phil!
I have the 5" GP-100 with wood and rubber grips. The barrel has a Mag-Na-Port which reduced recoil to pleasant levels. Before I found this one, I had a Rossi .357 Magnum 2" Snubby. Bad move. I shot two, maybe 3 cylinders through that sucker and my hand was throbbing. I traded that punisher in on the Ruger and was so glad.
I've shot several hundred rounds, both .357 Magnum and .38 Special and it's a joy to shoot. As mentioned, the rubber absorbs some of the recoil and the ports keep the muzzle down for quick follow up shots. One change I made from factory condition was to get a front sight from the Ruger Store which uses red "dot" on the front sight which makes it readily visible when shooting. Not exactly HiViz material but does the job. The best part is it was simple to replace the original. Even though it's 5" and my heaviest handgun, it is easy to pull out of the holster, although I'm not exactly a quick draw artist. It does everything you want a revolver to do, is fun to shoot, accurate and fits in fine as one of my carry/defense options. I have other Rugers and every one is reliable and will do what I want it to do.
I was already going to subscribe, but once you said you're in Louisiana, I immediately subscribed.
Well done review.
Just picked one up. Love it 😍
I wish at the time I bought my Ruger GP100 the gun shop would have had a 4 inch model. Mine is a 6 inch making it some heavier. The GP100 was designed for a life of maximum loads so don't waste time shooting .38's from it because they shoot so much differently.
Good review. Thanks. I own a 686, but that Ruger is a fine looking gun.
Thanks for the review. Im on the prowl for a woods trekker revolver to go with a lever action of the same caliber. You may have just sold me on this gun. Thank you and keep up the good work. God bless
I own a GP 100 and highly recommend it. It's a beauty.
You wont go wrong with this gun as your backup carry when you're packing your rifle. I recommend a copper jacketed hollow point for ammo for both your rifle and your Ruger handgun. Try it and you'll see why. Learning to shoot, go with the lead ones, but to carry, cjhp is what you want in it.
I can attest this is a freaking awesome gun. I own this gun it looks exactly the same. I've had it for 7 years now
Glad I still have mine. Great pistol!!
My ruger gp100 is 6 inch and my defense load Remington 357 mag 158 gr sjhp
Fantastic video man! Just what I wanted to see!
Thanks, hope you'll subscribe and stick around.
Wow I learned a lot about the GP100 from this video
I have the GP100 in matte stainless with a 4" barrel and it is a great shooting gun. The weight is a bonus because there is less muzzle flip with it than those plastic semi autos with way more power than a 9mm or even some 40s.
i've seen ol' timers pack 4 inch 357 magnums in owb holsters all the time. the sight of a big 357 seems more menacing than a semi auto for some reason
I sometimes carry my GP100 in my Galco holster legally. 6 rds. of .357 magnum is a comfort in today's world. I have a CCW permit, btw.
+LarryRickenbacker OWB, or IWB? I carry a 4.2” semi auto, can’t imagine a longer barrel being as comfortable but I’m always up for seeing how others conceal carry.
OWB in Galco's leather holster. Oddly enough, it rides higher on my hip than does my Beretta 92FS in a similar OWB leather holster from Galco. A local police chief (he's in his 60s now) advised me that in a self-defense scenario it's best to shoot "first and shoot LOUD!". Well, the .357 magnum is the King of the hill. Mine has a trigger job from Clark custom guns (20 yrs. ago) and has a 4-inch bbl. I carry two speed loaders stoked with .38 Spl+P.
Hey, who you callin an old timer? :P (28 here)
.357 has a proven performance record. They do weigh a bit. It's well built and I like the shock mounting for the grip.
Put .38 SP in it and it shoots like a giant .22 pistol.
Good review Bud.... I think ill go get one.
I have an old .357 Security Six with 4" barrel and pachmayr grips which I have used for both hunting and self defense. I really like the size and weight of the pistol and it works well in a shoulder holster for concealed carry. However, last year I got a wild hair and bought a GP100 Match Champion. Anyone remember the old song "Torn Between Two Lovers". I must admit that I am slightly more accurate with the GP100 and the original grip is quite comfortable. I think the increased accuracy could be due to the fiber optic front sight. However, there is not enough of a difference in accuracy to be concerned about which to carry and the .2 inch difference in barrel length does not require a different holster. Anyway, now I use the Security Six for concealed carry (4 oz. lighter pistol) and the GP100 with .357 for hunting
Great Revolver I've had mine for 11 years keep it clean and oil it.. if you neglect the gun it will neglect you..
I own a Ruger GP 100 357 Magnum. I also had the Smith and Wesson 586 and 686. I think that the Ruger is better built. It is much stronger and more reliable. Also, Ruger is a well run company. Look at how many times Smith and Wesson changes ownership. They seemed to have settled in now. But Ruger is far better with customer service.
Well done video. Very informative.
I bought my first one 6 months ago (bushed finish). I just bought my 2nd one last week (blued finish). They’re like potato chips. You can’t stop with one! They are so tough they will last a lifetime.
Over 10 years with mine, not one issue..after using 38s the shells stick a bit when going to 357,,but no big deal
Very good Video! I love the looks of the Ruger Bisley Blackhawk 3.75 inch Barrel, .44Mag. Very cool. So is the GP100 in your Video. My only knock on Ruger is, I don't like the Action on the Ruger Revolvers. I'm a Smith Man but I really do like the quality, overbuilt Frames that Ruger makes! Very strong! Nice Gun, nice Video!
I own both, they are very different animals. I'm a Ruger guy personally, but I won't throw a Smith out either.
I Installed A HiViz Tritium Light-Pipe 24 Hour Illumination. HiViz Makes Pretty Good Fiber Optic Sights As Well
Oh, that tankish weight DEFINITELY helps with recoil. Simple physics and mechanics when u think about it. Its crazy because i always thought "bigger the gun, the more recoil". I couldn't have been more wrong. My little pocket 9mm Ruger ec9s has WAY more recoil than my GP100 357 magnum. That little 9mm frame with it's light weight and light materials having to handle all the impact of a round going off make this gun kick hard and I have to really work at holding steady. Also, even with the 9mm magazine i got to add to the grip and amount of rounds (it comes with 7 round mag which i have 2 of) it still wasnt enough to stop from getting bit at least once or twice by it when we go shooting for the day. It helped a little with the accuracy, but i can still barely hit the broad side of a barn with it. Its strictly conceal carry emergency. Now my GP100 357 mag is so tankish and well-built, i barely notice any recoil at all and Im extremely accurate with it ever since i finally got it sighted in perfect last summer (the last GP100 they had left was the show-gun and it was not sighted in well at all). Now i can hit a metal plate from 60 yards 2 to 4 times out of 6 and I only continue to get better with it as i just got back into marksmenship as a secondary hobby last year after 10 years of only hunting on and off. My GP100 and my AR15 built with the quality parts palmetto kit and anderson lower reciever (same price as ruger and s&w's AR, but WAY better quality, you just gotta build it) are my babies and my 2 guns are am extremely accurate with.
Very informative thanks. 👍🏻
I have both GP100 in 4" and 6" stainless. Love them. The reason the Ruger is "beefer" than the Smith is the metal fabrication used. Yes, the Ruger may be heavier as for as recoil management.... The GP100 is a cast gun..the Smith is a forged. The guns are both able to handle .357 rounds equally. Reloaded rounds can be over charged and either gun will fail under those conditions. Nice videos.
For your table top reviews, put a mat or something down over your plywood table. It will help the object stand out and make the video look better.
You asked for advice.
Great video.
I am a great fan of the sturdy, well made GP-100. I carried one for several years. But I liked the old stocks (grips) they used in the late 1980s: rubber with wood inserts. The finger-positioning stocks force me to put my hand in a place I don't want it (I don't have large hands). I like the Pachmyer "Presentation" stocks but not the ones with the finger grooves.
similar comparison--I own a model 29 and a Redhawk--and the Ruger is visibly beefier--and with 44mag, the additional weight is nice
David Carson I owned a 629 6 shot 44 mag and still own a sp101 5 shot 357 mag. The top strap on on the sp101 is thicker than the 629. My sp101 has fired thousands of 357 mags and is still tight. The 629 started to loosen up and visibly increase cylinder gap after tens of 44 mag rounds so I sold it. It was fun while it lasted and pretty but the 629 just isn't a shooter.
I have the 6" stainless model Loving it!
I brought security Six" Blue and stainless 4" and 6" during Bicentennial month for $130.00 a piece new. I love the price since it cost 3 times cheaper than Colt Python 6" that ran for $325.00 back then (1976). This is CT guns from South Port my old home state are nice and the gun was the cheapest and very reliable and easy to repair. I had a friend worked in Ruger and we still have a whole Bag of unfinished grip for security Six in out garage. I blew up one of my Ruger 4" and send it back to the factory and paid $180.00 trade in for GP-100 Stainless 6". I put .38SW in the chamber and fired it and feel it soft like silk when shot through GP-100 SS 6:" barrel.
Great information - just one thing I did not much like and that was the Ruger Box . I would think it would have padding inside to help in protecting the pistol’s outer skin .
Especially since it is NOT a Cheap item .
Just an Observation. Again Great information . I’m trying to Decide myself on a Brand.
Couldn’t decide between 4 and 6 inch so bought the Davidson’s 5 inch. If had to do over I wouldn’t get that bright finish. Takes to long to clean with polish. Blued would be choice
an excellent revolver, the best in my opinion.
+g croyle This GP100 has me really wanting for a Super Blackhawk or Super Redhawk now.
Better than S&W
I'd like to see this compared with the Manurhins (73/88).
I’m with ya. I prefer the gp100 over the s&w line. I’ve had mine for 20 yrs.and put a lot of magnums down range.
It’s a revolver you buy to inherit to you grand son, it’s awesome tool
I own the predecessor to the GP100; a Security Six with a 6” barrel. It is far and away my favorite firearm to shoot. It is not for conceal carry, but has a place of honor on my nightstand.
I've bought my Security Six in 1976 and I do carry mine, but it's a 4 in. barrel.
Put in a wolf spring kit and polish the internals. You will not regret it. It makes the trigger damn good.
I just bought this gun and cannot wait to shoot it!
Update : I’ve had time to shoot my gp100 4” and I must say I love shooting this full size magnum! My gun was shooting to the left of point of aim so I adjusted the rear sight a bit and now point of aim is point of impact inside 50 yards 🤩
I installed a spring kit however I was havlight primer strikes with imported Magtech ammo which I believe have European hard primers.
Once I burn up my surplus of that ammo I will reinstall that spring kit and buy only American made ammo with normal primers.
Great gun! Love it!! Think I will order a Alien Gear chest rig holster for it , that will make it a nice hiking / hunting sidearm 😁✌️🇺🇸
Just bought a 686 plus it came in a nice blue hard plastic case ..
I read somewhere that at a shooting range they had a Ruger revolver that had fired over million rounds through it & still no cracking of the frame or any other malfunctions.
The Ruger GP100 and the S&W 686, with the same size barrel are within 1oz. in weight.
I own both speed loaders and for my Ruger I prefer the Safari land. They hold the rounds tightly and my drop tests were flawless. There’s nothing wrong with the HKS, I just prefer the Safari land.
Can you recommend a leather holster for the 2.5 GP, plz?
Thanks for the review!
If your a pretty good shooter..you should feel comfortable carrying a revolver...don't care who you are or how big...1-2 357 magnum rds threw the chest will break you down!!
I agree with you. I’ve owned that exact gun for 15 yrs. and it goes on all my elk hunts and back country hiking trips. I’ve shot the daylights out of it. If there was ever a revolver built for trench warfare this is it. I don’t know if it’s blue collar though. Have you seen the prices on them today?
