I have always taught this with a metal rod on the ground in front of the dog .Also teaches the dog to hinge back into the down rather than the dog creeping forward. Dogs aren't keen on metal as the claws make an odd noise when touching it, plus the scent is alien. It also keeps the dog on the ground where this will ultimately be used. Has worked a treat for me for 50 years. Great video though Nate, thank you. Many different methods for teaching dogs.

Yes, that sounds like another great way to teach this. Could also be another great step when introducing the exercise to the dog on the ground. :)

First, thanks for your content 🙂
Do you use dry kibble for your training, Iike would you use dry for a new puppy or do you use softer food?
    Thanks for your time 🙂

As an Israeli guy in Israel who followed your training system with his own dog and volunteer in a shelter where I recommend your videos all the time, it is funny to see an Israeli guy working your methods in your videos. Thanks Nate!

I would have liked to also see an example from someone using English commands of sit, stand and lay. That way I would know if the dog was doing them or had to be corrected. 😊 Thank you for this video though.

My dog already "performs commands from a distance". He tells me where I should get off and its normally always from a long way away.

Great video. I was told to teach this so differently in a group class I attended with my dog. It was way more punishment based sadly. Thankfully me and my dog worked on it differently than instructed when at home, way more like what you do, and she can now it do it so nicely. Plus the ground class we took was mostly for her to learn how to work around other dogs (plus work on some minor dog reactivity she was having at the time) and not actually to learn how to teach her since we had already had her a year and taught her all the basics plus some more with only UA-cam to help. So thanks for teaching me how to do it properly with my next dog so I don’t have to use punishment as a starter like my instructor wanted us to do.

As much as possible, training should be a fun and exciting experience for both you and your dog. It should be positive. That way your dog looks forward to training sessions. Not hate training sessions.
My personal experience, dogs catch on much faster and I get better results when I make the training session positive.

@@bdogg20101 same. My other trainer just wasn’t the best. He thought corrects first would help dogs learn faster. Which is not true with my dog. So glad I had Nate’s channel during that time to help me figure out what I actually wanted to do while training my dog within that class. Plus I love when my dog is happy after a training session. I am also. And she does learn faster with shaping and rewarding behaviors rather than corrections. Which makes total sense.
