My wife shoots with a 5D4 and I shoot with an EOS-R. When we shoot video/film together, the resulting footage is close enough to not require much post-processing to make them match under most circumstances. So I think the assessment in this video is spot-on. We've been really happy overall with the quality we've been getting with this combo, and our clients have been happy, too. We're actually even considering adding another EOS-R or RP.
I was going to do the same. I went with the 90D instead for a variety of reasons, one being diversity of capabilities. The RP doesn't have 30p in 4K, which sealed its fate. 24p looks janky on UA-cam, which is where a lot of work ends up.
I'm still rocking my 5D Mark IV's. I've learned this little trick of slightly underexposing on the 5D4 so as to not blowout the highlights and then lift shadows in post and I get a really good image if I do not use C-Log. I shoot 50% Photography & 50% Video, which is why I bought the 5D4 shortly after it was announced.
The EOS R is a great camera. Bought it and tried it for a week, fell in love with it, sold my Fuji XT-3 with lenses and kept the EOS R system. I can't be more happy with that decision!!!
and theres me wondering whats better, im thinking about xt3 and canon rp. I do mostly photos and sometimes videos with gimbal. What would u suggest? :)
The EOS R & 5D mkiv are my two main cameras for photo wedding photography and videography. I've really enjoyed them for what they can do and what they offer. I love all cameras but with as much investment in Canon gear it made more sense for me to get the EOS R instead of switching to Sony.
Possibly better digital filtering but if, and that’s a question, the R has more dynamic range it is likely due to improvements in the power supply logic to reduce noise. If they introduced a mark V I would expect a little better performance due to refinement of design, improvements to PCB layout, etc...

Dang, perfect timing for this video. As a corporate DP I've been trying to decide whether to replace the 5d MkIV as our gimbal camera. Thanks for the awesome video, now I made my decision :D Also, just a note, the MkIV CAN come with C-log in the camera, but you have to pay $100 more upfront for it to come with it stock. So that at least eliminates the need to send it to Canon and pay that $100 fee after getting it.
Corperate DP and you're using a 5D IV as a gimbal camera? For sure feel like there are way better options.. Also, the majority would just get a movi and stick with the huge bump Cinema cameras have imo..
@@ghenaric For a small studio setting, I like flying the 5D due to it's dual pixel AF and ease of use compared to flying say a C300 MkII on a Movi Pro with an easy rig. There are tons of different types of corporate DP's btw. We're not a huge production company that's using multiple AC's. Typically it's me and my junior videographer so I'll be the one with the movi or Ronin and the camera mounted. The work I do is mainly testimonials, and educational content so we're not talking action shots that require a focus puller/AC to help me out. And obviously the 5D and/or EOS R aren't my studio cameras. They're just for any type of parallax motion or quick motion that I want to supplement with our studio cameras when I don't want a slider shot.
The EOS R is great for video. Although I rented 2 for a few video projects. One of the cameras corrupted part of a video clip that crashed premiere. I had to isolate the section in the clip, and export out pieces of the clip avoiding the problem area, and reimporting as pieces. Probably just a fluke. Other than that, the size and quality/settings options was impressive. I use 1DX2, 5D4, C100's all the time.
I have both... I’ve had my “R” for two years now. And loved it from day one. And still do. The 4K crop is not a problem step back, or use a wider lens if it’s a problem.... I always offer 4K. But most clients go for 1080. Do that’s good enough.
You all compared these so well!!!! I’m a photographer first and videographer second. I love how you mentioned that. I was looking into getting a back up cam for video and photography here and there.
I'd love to see a side by side EOS R vs 90D comparison! They seem to be pretty well matched as far as specs with the 90D actually doing a bit better with 120fps FHD, but I'm not sure how the video out of them would compare.
That was a solid review. I came to check this out because B&H is selling the R for $1499 and the Mk IV for $1999 as of December 17, 2020. And they are giving a free EF lens adapter for the R. Even though they are coming out with a new camera in 2020, this will be a nice inexpensive upgrade to my Mk III.
It isn't. That's like saying a camera that shoots 10 fps totally blows away a camera that only shoots 9 fps. The R has an edge on noise control thanks to a newer, faster processor. Leave it at that.
Smede Lightworks For me, there are stacks of shots from the 5D4 that are plain unusable because of the noisy LOG. I never run into that with the EOS R, not to mention the added features of focus peaking and focus assist. The are both similar cameras, but the EOS R is def. refined.
Really appreciate this video guys!! Who else's mouth is watering now for this potential EOS R PRO..2 card slots? Possibly IBIS? PLEASE SAY 120 1080..TAKE MY MONEYYYY!
I tried a demo of the R with the Canon Rep in Burbank and it failed twice on me.. Not surprised the price dropped so quick compared to the mark IV.. It's still holding some value even in a field of new cameras.. I'm glad I held out on the R...I think what they have coming now will be worth the price..I never jump on the first version of anything so they can workout the kinks
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the 5D MkIV can only dual record photos and not video. At least I haven't been able to figure out how to dual record video on mine yet.
@@murderer5060 Well, there is no ideal, but if you look at the price-quality ratio, then the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K and Z-CAM E2 CAMERA are quite decent cameras.
At 10:00, you forgot to mention that 5d's timelapse only goes out in 1920x1080 whereas the Eos R can finally shoot either 4k or FHD timelapses which is a huge difference. I'd also say that timelapse mode on those cameras are made out of photos which if you expose them right will be at a low ISO and will let you a large field of color work by only dropping down the contrast of the shot, which won't destroy the image because of the ton of infos produced by each photo of the timelapse. Being able to make 4k timelapse with video makes Eos R clear winner here considering photo timelapses can be done with any tool made for it for about 10 euro, whereas the only way of making 4k timelapse en the 5d will be to make a photo timelapse and work it in post, resize it, etc..
@@landonbtw So, were you mistaken about the R's ability to shoot photo timelapses internally? My understanding is that if you set it to bulb, you can make it work...
For handheld, the heavier camera will smooth out microjitters because it has a bigger center of mass. I laugh when people say they are waiting for a "pro version of the EOS-R". Check out the video "Canon EOS-R Not Pro Enough?" where Alex Barrera busts this myth.
@@fulltimefilmmaker Agreed. I just think people who don't think the EOS-R as "pro" are wrong. I think "higher end" is a perfect way of saying it. I just sold my 1DMkIII and 5DIV and don't feel the EOS-R is any less pro than either of those cameras (well, the 1D is a beast in it's own class but still). :)
@SwitchRich I sold my 1D and 5DIV to get the EOS-R and don't regret it. In fact, I have way more fun with the EOS-R and get more keepers with it as well. It has much better IQ than the 1D, and much better "everything" than the 5D (though despite having the same sensor, I feel I can push/pull the 5D images more than the EOS-R's without banding).
Watched from start to finish (something I rarely do for reviews nowadays) straight up information. Exactly what I wanted. I been thinking about upgrading my sl2 to the eos r. We will see at the end of the year. Subbed great video
Good review. I agree the EOS R is a better film camera. 5D4 is better for stills if speed is what you need, but I use 17MP anyways, so I'm not sure how that effects the buffer/fps. Impressed with the performance of the EOS R.
I had the BMPCC6K in the cart and a close sales contact knew my needs and really suggested I look at the EOS R + Ninja V combo, as I need really fast turn-around. It beats out all of my cameras for video, and can hold its own with stills against my 5DSR (because of the manual focus aides). Love it. I do not however expect 1 camera to serve every purpose. My company does have just a few cameras (Pano GH5s, Canon 5DSR, Canon 90D, Sony PXW-Z150). I'd still pick the EOS R if I could only keep one though. It's too strong in so many areas. It's the image that counts, not the specs to me.
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA It has a silent shooting mode where it makes zero sound. That’s important shooting stills on a movie set or during lectures that I sometimes photograph.
I received a Canon 5d iv camera last week, but a lot of people said I sell the camera and buy a better Canon R. Is it worth selling the 5d iv and taking the R, I hope you will answer me very confused?
A point not mentioned is that if you also use a Canon cine camera (or aspire to one), the output of the EOS R can be set to be identical to that of the cine cameras.
I think the dynamic range of the EOS R is better than the dynamic range of the 5D mark IV. That's what I noticed that's why I thout that A ist the EOS R. And the footage is smoother.
I currently have the 6d Mark II and that flip screen is a must for me. Trying to get the low angles this is very helpful. Look's like I will be upgrading to the a EOS R lol

In regards to photography, the EOS R actually shoot up to 8fps in One Shot and the 5fps is only limited to Servo. So yes, the 5D Mark IV shoots 7fps, but is that in both One Shot and Servo or one over the other?

The eos R looks nice.. I'm quite happy with my GH5.. but if the price drops low enough.. I might pick up an EOS R and 24-105 lens! The GH5 is amazing for video.. but the Canon will beat it for stills.. plus it would be interesting to see how the EOS R stacks up to the GH5 for video.
Internally the 5D Mk. IV records 4:2:2 in 8 bit. The EOS R is only 4:2:0 in 8 bit. But the EOS R outputs 4:2:2 10bit on the HDMI port wich the 5D doesn't. 5D mk. IV is better for internal recording, EOS R is better for external recording. The 5D mk. IV uses a "heavy" codec, EOS R doesn't. I think i sell both, and a kidney and then buy the C500 when released - but then i have no camera for photography. Hmm, don't wanna (can) live without kidneys at all. Tough call.😱
I have both bodies and like them both respectively. However, I don't like the R's top mount LCD where its dark and the text is light. I'd prefer the way the 5D top LCD screen is with light background and dark text. Maybe there is a setting on the R to change that? Got me.

this is a about video so pooint 1 invalid, point 2 sucks it has all i. and ipb mp4 which is very convenient and looks good, touch skill kills a youtsick in menus, eos r is lighter , feels good, and has a flip screen which is awesome. WRONG!!!!!
Hey! Prob the best review I've seen on EOS R. Fantastic job as always!
Watched from start to finish (something I rarely do for reviews nowadays) straight up information. Exactly what I wanted. I been thinking about upgrading my sl2 to the eos r. We will see at the end of the year. Subbed great video
Team Parker all the way, I love you Parker welback it's always nice to see your videos they teach a lot more than film school
Good review. I agree the EOS R is a better film camera. 5D4 is better for stills if speed is what you need, but I use 17MP anyways, so I'm not sure how that effects the buffer/fps. Impressed with the performance of the EOS R.
Can’t wait for the Pro R
Fantastic side by side comparison, one of the best I've seen so far.
Parker can you do a video talking about the 1dx mark iii and your thoughts on it? Going to pick it up or wait for the EOS R Pro?
Best comparison review I’ve seen. What did you film the review on ?
Technically, 10 bits is 4 times the amount of information in 8 bit. Not twice.
That's four times PER CHANNEL, which means 10bit will describe 4x4x4=64 times more colors than 8bit. That's 1 billion colors vs 16 million.
@@ssneg whoa 😱😱😱😱😱😱
If you are just starting out and don't have a lot of money. What camera would you recommend for video for vlogging?

@@Musicaadorecchio Thank you!
That's the video I needed!! THANK YOU!!
Awesome vid, Parker! Love to see your team is growing! Best of luck! 💪
Y’all are the first to actually say good things on that Touch Bar.
I actually really don't like that touch bar. I have mine disabled and locked. My thumb hits it inadvertently all the time.
I like it. I really with I could use the right arrow for back-button-focus though. It's in the perfect spot. lol.
A big deal for me as a set photographer is that silent shooting mode on the EOS R, which is why I'm about to buy one since they're on sale.
Is it totally silent when shooting with the EOS R like the smartphones?
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA It has a silent shooting mode where it makes zero sound. That’s important shooting stills on a movie set or during lectures that I sometimes photograph.
As a career long photographer (Nikon) photographer looking to get into videography, the r5 looks like an excellent first camera 🤔
Great video, guys!
Hi Parker, thanks for this video. I am a beginner, but your advice helped me. 🙏 I will buy the Canon eos R.
Was waiting for this! 👍😁
I received a Canon 5d iv camera last week, but a lot of people said I sell the camera and buy a better Canon R. Is it worth selling the 5d iv and taking the R, I hope you will answer me very confused?
I'm a photographer first, but quick question... Great vid... Don't video guys need dual cards as well?
A point not mentioned is that if you also use a Canon cine camera (or aspire to one), the output of the EOS R can be set to be identical to that of the cine cameras.
I think the dynamic range of the EOS R is better than the dynamic range of the 5D mark IV. That's what I noticed that's why I thout that A ist the EOS R. And the footage is smoother.
Okey saw the full video. Yes the dynamic range of the EOS R is better
I currently have the 6d Mark II and that flip screen is a must for me. Trying to get the low angles this is very helpful. Look's like I will be upgrading to the a EOS R lol
Same thing! Retiring my 6d ii and go for R over R6
Best video and photo editing laptop. Been having a hard time between the Macbook Pro and Surface book 2
For those prices get a "gaming" laptop with better specs. Msi has some good ones. Check out xoticpc to get a custom one that allows you to upgrade when you need to
@@MeAndMyOpinions_OverYours Will it be under 3,000$?
@@VusionTube yes!
@@VusionTube the one I was looking at to upgrade was $2400-2700. I9 9900k 8 core, rtx 2070, and supports 64gb ram and 3 SSDs.
The one I got 2 years ago was $1400-1600 . I7 7700k 4 core, GTX 1070, I have 32gb ram, and 3 SSDs in mine. Its light and pretty thin .
@@VusionTube just check out xoticpc.com and check out the laptops they have. Once you see one you like you can customize it . I would get 1 ssd, 1 16gb ram, and take out drive 2 and 3. To save the most. And At a later time you can add more ram and more SSDs if you like. That's what I did. I wanted for samsung to have their drives at a low price . And now SSDs are getting even cheaper.
Thank you. You helped me solidify which one to buy. My theatre is going virtual this season and need to be able to shoot video.
I bought the EOS R and a used 6D. best of both worlds
Parker's sister is Black?
Explains a lot 🤔🔥
I mean we all remember his handles🏀
I was with you until you gave a point for that touch bar. Lol. 😉
Haha why's that?
@@fulltimefilmmaker You really "don't like it" or you just don't find it useful? People complain about that bar like it's getting in the way of their photography.
Awesome as usual , Top THX Parker Walbeck and team.
I'll have the R any day of the week thank you.
S Tra Yes on a Sunday also
@S Tra Its stil a day of the week?..
@@AugmentedGravity probably you haven't learnt in your country but one week has 7 days. From Monday to Sunday or from Sunday to Saturday depending or your beliefs.

EOS R5 will be sick hopefully
Exactly the comparison I was looking for !!
C-Log is an option when you buy Mark IV, also C-Log firmware upgrade allows 10 bit too.
10 bi ton the Mark IV? With external only like the R?
@@davedecrescente8637 www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/explore/see-legendary/canon-log
@@TheDouglasWinter yea the Mark IV doesnt do 10bit
Not sure how you guys got such a big difference in dynamic range between the 2 cameras. Processing maybe? Testing has shown they have roughly the same DR.
as a (serious) Amateur, i think iso performance will be much more important than pixel resolution with our current camera tech, like how many people actually need to print giant posters out of their own photos? but how many people need to take photo during dim light or in the night?
What a beautiful bride!
Good timing! Thanks for reinforcing my decision. I'm getting an upgrade to my 6d mark ii and go for R over R6
Thx for this video, guys, very complete... except one point that for me is missing: what about the audio? Are the pre-amps of the EOS-R exactly the same than the 5D? Different? If you have an answer to this, I will appreciate a lot...
Suggestion for video: best NON-CINEMA lenses to use with EOS R for video: for example, EF 85mm f/1.4 IS, RF 35mm f/1.8, etc?
I'm crying because I've been saving up for the eso R, Another 700.00 dollars and I'll have it!! Cant wait, I should be able to buy it by hmm October lol
With the new EOS R5 and EOS R6 coming out, hopefully the price of EOS R drops drastically. That's what I'm waiting for (: Hopefully it'll be sooner than October for you friend!
Joseph Oh they’re already dropping nicely!
Goodluck!
@@hafidhhh Thanks :) I explained to my Manager how bad I really want a beast of a Camera and that I was short on money, So he's letting me do some Overtime. I preordered the Canon eso R6 :) I can't wait to get it lol
@@thinkvlog_4life503 oh lordie, R6 is even better! i'm a several step away from R / 5D MK IV , i really want that uncropped 4k 60 from EOS R6 but i'm not sure about the price in my country..
I have and use my 5D4 a lot when traveling and backpacking. I want to take a step up with both photos and videos for my next camera, while the EOSR is better then the 5D4 I feel like its more like a step diagonal as opposed to a step ahead. If the EOSR had more pro features then it would be my hands-down choice.
EOS R is way better, for everything except sports, only one card slot, and no joystick
@@RayValdezPhotography I do agree it is better for a lot of things however for when I am traveling and I don't need that much gear and I want the best versatility. I feel like the EOSR is great all around however I would need to have more gear.
What about a video explaining how you edit, what external hard drive to use while editing how to connected, how to use it, what other hard drive just for backing up for files or how? How you edit with proxies and export the video to its original size? That would be a cool video....
In regards to photography, the EOS R actually shoot up to 8fps in One Shot and the 5fps is only limited to Servo. So yes, the 5D Mark IV shoots 7fps, but is that in both One Shot and Servo or one over the other?
I don´t know what should i do, i have a 2500$ budget, should i spend all in a canon eos r/sony a7iii or buy a fuji xt3/xt30 with a gimbal and more gear. I´m a portrait photographer but i wanna explore new things and i´m so excited to do video. Idk if i should buy the best camera that i can buy for the money or spend more on gear like a gimbal, lenses, monitor, etc
A7iii or EOS R?
Respond Please! Thanks
Easy to tell with the crop
Great video
Every topic covered
I Loved it
Perfect timing on the video comparison. Keep up the great work.
What about the conclusion? which one to take if it is not related to commerce? I would also thank you for the detailed explanatory video
Awesome! This is what i'm waiting for!
Like your style guys! How about comparing the Fujifilm X-T3 and the ESO-R
Welp...waiting for the next EOS R before I switch to mirrorless. The 1DX Mark III is the only body on my list for this year. (cinematographer)
Bill Rich I got the Gh5s and the Eos R and man, the image quality of the Gh5s blows the Eos R out of the water! Of course I am talking about video!
It would be great to see a comparison between all canon cine cameras. Your videos are extremly helpfull!
great comparison but i am so excited for the pro version of the Eos R!!
The 5DSR replacement will probably come out way before it (which will go directly in my cart)...
Have been waiting to hear Parkers opinion on this!
I have both bodies and like them both respectively. However, I don't like the R's top mount LCD where its dark and the text is light. I'd prefer the way the 5D top LCD screen is with light background and dark text. Maybe there is a setting on the R to change that? Got me.
EOS R or Sony Alpha 3 for VIDEO content?
