You can touch a focus point on the a7iii, you can also use pre-af to make it so you don’t need to half press the shutter. Pretty sure you can also use the bottom corner of the touch screen to set your focus point if you’re using the evf(not 100% sure on that one since it has the joystick).
I knew about tap to focus but for focus points I stand totally corrected on this, literally had no idea. I always had the touch screen off because it was useless to me. That being said I just tried it and its even worse than the Fuji so pretty un-useable 😂 Might have to pin this to the top, thanks for ruining my credibility, Dunna ;)
@@chrisbrockhurst You can actually use the whole screen. I find that (when set up the right way) using my thumb on the LCD while looking through the EVF is a game-changer. It's the fastest and most reliable way to use single point AF. You just gotta set it up right. :)
Grant Michael yeh I went through all the options and tried them all out. If you think it’s good on the A7iii you’ll be amazed at the R then, it’s night and day
The touch screen focusing on the a7III has messed me up a few times. I’m a run and gun type guy and just grabbing the camera you can so easily touch the screen and you don’t realize that your focus point is stuck in some corner somewhere. And the fact that Sony has never updated the ability to change the colour of the focus point, most of the time you can’t find it on the screen. I makes me mental. So, I have placed a touch screen button on the ‘function’ menu so I can turn it off for most instances but able to quickly turn it back on if I was to use active tracking and just touch on the object to be tracked. Even having every button programmed can also mess things up quickly. I have C2 as a manual focus toggle and I’ve been caught noticing peek focus lines and I realize I must have hit that button by mistake. All these camera have soooo many options and features that keep you on your toes. I love it all, but you really do need to keep your wits about you.
@@chrisbrockhurst I recently (for about 3 weeks) owned both the EOS R and the A7III. I didn't really find that big of a difference between the two when looking through the viewfinder and using my right thumb on the screen to locate my focus point. That being said, the EVF in the EOS R looked 1 million percent better than the Sony, but the focus accuracy on the A7III was just a touch better. At the end of the day, I returned the Canon and kept the Sony, which was meant a complete system change for me. So far, no regrets. BUT...they are both really solid cameras. My decision honestly came down to the availability of cropless 4K video and 120 fps HD. I also just felt like I had more fun shooting with the Sony.
I migrated from Canon to Fuji recently. I've noticed that when I was editing photos in lightroom, I was always chasing that "fuji" look. So I thought, why not try the Fuji out. I CAN NOT EXPLAIN how much I love this camera. RAWs are RAWs to me for the work I do, but I never thought I would enjoy jpg so much, especially after tweaking your settings and getting those film recipes to your taste. Spending less time in editing software is life-changing for me.
Ok. Sold my A7iii and bought the Fuji x-t3. Best decision for my part. We can discuss back and forth between these camera. Their all great. Comes down to personal taste.
@Micah Yamanakathis is not my experience even with 6 spare batteries it was a pain. its not suitable for work or even holidays. the sony rocks with they new battery. However the fuji xt4 might be amazing
Good points. Fuji is a learning curve, but it forces you to understand how a camera works so that’s been really helpful for me. Also, I rarely have to go into the menus on the fuji compared to when I had Sony and canon. It’s like magic once the Fuji was setup I can access literally almost everything without the menus and I appreciate that, Sony cameras still force you into the menus for lots/most operations and is complicated as hell for a camera. All machines, all do the same thing and all want your money lol, so many good cameras nowadays.
Chase, as a long time fuji and canon user and recently been switching to sony, I have to disagree with you. Sony menu is terrible, everything is super confusing but once you set it up, the shortcut and hot keys are much better than Fuji. Switching from photography to video is a breeze, you can't do that on Fuji.
I agree that it forces you to learn everything, but if you are already confident using a camera in fully manual its more of a hindrance to be honest. The Sony system for customizing and changing between settings is the best by far
I actually switched from Sony a7III to Fuji X-t3 because how confusing the menu system on the Sony cameras is. Every every other Sony users seem to agree on this as well. While the Fuji is not perfect, it is definitely easier to navigate its menu system compared to Sony.
that is just proof that you didnt use the Sony long enough to appreciate the button customization and probably picture profiles that makes that camera awesome
Long time Fuji XT1 user here.. the only time I go into the menus is when I need to reformat the SD card. The three dials on the top plate and the aperture ring on the lense are all I need. Thanks for the video, very informative.
@Chris I use the XT3 full time and you can reassign the left ISO dial to the right function dials either on the front or back. I've used it with one hand several times. I agree the grip with horrible. I've gotten used to it now.
As a Fuji user I agree with most things mentioned. Just a few things I’d like to add to help put those that are curious. Fuji can have the exposure triangle all set to the two dials in the front and back. Making it usable for one handed operations. Also there’s the MyMenu for things in the menu you use most often in order to help find options you use often much quicker. And great video 👍
Unfortunately I couldn’t find a way around that one. The camera has a mind of its own for that. Sometimes it goes back to where you left off and other times I starts back up from the top of the menu.
Fujifilm shooter here, too... I became one from doing initial hands-on with various mirrorless cameras at the time and came up with that Sony's menu system was the least favorable. The fact that Fujifilm had the dials for controlling aperture, shutter speed, and ISO made it much easier to just pick it up and get something you might want straight away. Of course this is a personal preference, yet Fujifilm provides the user the CHOICE of implementing those features to front and back wheels with one hand... I'm a bit "old school" and really like that user experience, but Canon's touch and user interface are top of the heap. I also noticed the EVF and LCD quality was not as good on the Sony's. I can see how the flip screen may be useful, but not a deal-breaker on a hybrid camera. Fujifilm's My Menu is there for features you may use the most... Fn, other buttons, and gestures can be arranged to your liking. Fujifilm's menu implementation is a design choice. They went with the menu going back to the beginning instead of where the user last left off... some may be bothered by that where others might prefer the menu going back to the beginning. I find that sometimes the menu is where I left off at and other times it seems to have reset back to the beginning... not sure if I pressed a button differently than another sequence, but I'm accustomed to the menu quirks so much I don't really notice it at times. The door of the X-T3 can be removed from the camera, if needed... The others just don't have 4k/60p and 10-bit internal. With the Eterna film simulation, I can get excellent results s.o.o.c. without needing to waste much time color grading in my nle... and it does very well for sports shooting and can shoot faster frame-rates with electronic shutter... If I was using any camera I would use Capture One right now before LightRoom because I like the tethering feature built-in to the software and just think their RAW processing engine is better.
Not many people seem to be talking about the zoom issue with Fuji lenses. I found many of the video shoots I did, the footage would go blurry when zooming in and out unless I put the camera in auto. This was with all updated firmwares too. I tried 70-200 2.8, 18-55, 16-55. Meant I couldn't use the thing for shooting gigs and sports events where I needed to reframe shots on the fly.
@@chrisbrockhurst That reminds me... with the 18-55, (and other lenses) did you encounter a strange exposure stepping shift even when stopped down to f4? It would get suddenly lighter or darker as you move through the zoom range. That was another reason I felt dubious to leave my Sony gear.
Here's a link showing an example of the exposure shifts. (shot on X-H1, but t3 does the same) This is with the 16-55 2.8 as well, so it's not because it's a variable aperture lens that isn't stopped down. Im just surprised more people aren't flagging these problems for video, as they were deal breakers for me. ua-cam.com/video/Cb3MLj9NJjQ/v-deo.html
I friggin love my XT3... but do you have any experience with the Z6? I own both, and can't bring myself to commit to just one. Cameras are so good these days.
@@spector175 Nope! I haven't sent my z6 in for an upgrade, and I don't use final cut pro. Honestly, I love the Z6's flat profile by itself, even though it's only 150mbps, it's perfect for me and saves on hard drive space.
Nice video. I wanted to know how the screen of the EOS R is compared to my XT3's as I'm thinking of getting one, so thanks. I think you forgot to mention that the XT3 is the only camera of the bunch (maybe even only mirrorless camera) that can do 4K 60fps though?
Everyone can see your skewed love for Sony. But you did a fair comparison. Absolutely agreed: every camera has strength and weakness. Just use what you love.
Trying to stay neutral, I’d say I just have more experience with the Sony so can talk more confidently about it. I’m actually really starting to like the canon
Battled a cold during this one, that's why my voice sounds extra sexy.. I enjoyed making this one, filled with things I don't hear discussed that often so interested to start that debate below.. LETS GOOOOOOOO
I don’t know about the A7iii but on my A7RIV, when I review a picture and then press the AEL button during picture playback of a shot I just took, it always zooms into the exact spot in the frame where I had set a focus point so I can check focus same when eye focus is activated .. keep pressing the AEL to continue to zoom in.. I never use the wheel on the back to zoom in and out of photo I am reviewing on the LCD or EMF..
I’m mainly a wedding videographer, what is the best between Fuji and A7lll (which I already own). I’m getting tired of waiting for 4K60. Although nobody knows what the X-T4 & A74 will bring. The Fuji lenses are very good at half the price also
Chris Brockhurst I know your right. Image quality, AF performance, lens value. There’s a ton of things to consider. I hate that Fuji won’t let other manufacturers, (Sigma, Tamaron, Zeiss etc...) make lenses for their system. The IBIS on the A7lll isn’t very good, hoping the X-T4’s will work better
This review was really helpful! Wasn't really considering the Fuji, but this definitely helped me on the way deciding between the Sony and the Canon :) Thanks!
@@spectres_garage No it's not. They have slightly cheaper versions of the license that are limited to Sony or Fuji, but otherwise, it's the exact same for all. It just has a superior RAW processor compared to ACR (which is what Lightroom uses) and handles colours much better than Lightroom.
Great channel! In the end I went with Fuji and Canon because I’m not going to edit thousands of pictures and NEED great looking JPEGs and video straight outta camera. All three have great glass and IMO that’s much more important. That new RF glass🙌🏽
if you are using JPG's straight from the camera I can absolutely see the purpose of going Fuji over anything else. At the end of the day its all personal preference anyways :)
I have been a Sony user since Sony took over Minolta. Recently I bought an X100V, then I sold all my Sony gear and bought an X-T3 with 3 zooms. No regrets. Yes, the A6600 and A7III have better grips, but I am perfectly able to operate the X-T3 with one hand, holding the leads of my two dogs with the other.
@@chrisbrockhurst In setup menu, page 3 of 7, change Touch Panel/Pad setting, to Touch Pad. Then you can configure in Touch pad settings right below that. This will allow you to look through the elf, and move the focus point with your thumb on the screen.
Hi Chris, great comparison. Was hoping you would touch on the infamous no blackout in EVF when continuous shooting with the Canon eos r. Were you able to test this and if yes what are your thoughts? Is it a hindrance or something one can easily adapt to? Much appreciated :)
The eos r handles it a bit differently than other cameras. Most cameras put a black screen between frames in the evf and the Canon leaves the previous image up so it seems like it's lagging behind a bit. Annoying but you can get used to it.
Fuji simulations are amazing you only need to used it and tuning it... By default they look meh... But if you understand the camera and every film simulation and you play around with all the settings of each simulation you will be getting an experience and results out of the world you can even emulate a lot of historic and beautiful films, I don't regret getting the xt3 instead the a7iii, I always hate Canon colors so to me Canon wasn't in the game. I know Fuji is a cropped sensor but I use the camera mostly for video and for sure that higher bit rates on this sansor on video lets you play with recovering shadows and highlights almost at the level of a full frame, not in that point but for sure really close, also editing colors on both photos and videos was a joyful experience on the Fuji, being able to play with more than 1'000.000 of colors freed my creativity I really love colors and on that regard I considered Sony behind, Canon isn't my taste, nikon for photos is wow pretty raw but good, Panasonic was amazing my best experience until I get into Fuji system, sharpness, colors, editing, dr, bit rates, hardware, software,features... No other brand haves all of that. I will stay on Fuji for my pro work
I'd love to see you get your hands on a Z6 as a working professional Chris. It's just had a firmware update to enable improved AF functionality. I think it has better ergonomics than all three of those cameras for hybrid work. The only question mark is does it have AF good enough in today's market.
You’re voice did sound extra sexy. If I were jumping into a new camera I’d be hard pressed between the a7iii (my main since it was released) and the xt3. So many great cameras coming out now
So many great cameras coming out now, yes... And now there's talk of the XT4, the EOS Rs, rumored to have 4k60 & 4k120? WHAT? The A74 is also gonna make an appearance sometime soon, and of course, the grand unicorn of them all, the a7s4... Ahhh, a7s4, with your flippy screen, 10 bit 4:2:2 4k60 FF, 4k120 super 35, a 2.5milliion dot LCD screen and 5.3million dot viewfinder... I have dared to dream the dream... could it be the perfect hybrid camera? It could, but I think Sony has hired execs from Canon who have brought the cripple hammer with them. After all this time, I hope it exceeds expectations and not disappointments. (Chris & Jake, you guys are awesome, keep it up.)
Why don't you use zone focus? Or you set the touch on to the sony and then you can set the focus with touch too. Even when you are looking into the viewfinder. I use zone and if it doesn't find it i set it with the touch.
It depends very ob the scene and yes wveryone does it a little different but of all the methos the sony still is a good choice! Thanks for the video. I think fujifilm has some interesting stuff in their lineup but sony is expensive enough for now😂
Clearly paid by Sony and Canon to dump all over Fuji. Who does this guy think he's fooling!!! ...lol j/k Great video as usual mate! Looking forward to our next shoot so you can drool over the rez on my "ancient" XPro2 LCD 😜 excited to check out the R if you've still kept it by then ;)
haha you of all people know I REALLY wanted to love that Fuji, think I will be going the new X100F route when it comes out, or whatever its called. Your XPro2 screen has competition from the R now ;)
I own an X-T3 and didn’t see it that way. Maybe the criteria are not ones that I would use but it’s not my video. My only critique is that Fujifilm came out with a firmware update the day after you released your video for autofocus. You somehow knew about and added the update for the Canon but not the X-T3 and there was no mention of it in the video. Were you not paying attention?
You can kind of check where your focus point on the a7iii, once you've taken your photo go into the playback and use the af-on button, this should expand your photo but it expands it to where you focused, i use this trick often
The a7iii allows touch focus! And it also allow that dragging thing when it is on evf mode! In fact, it is better to use than the xt3 for that function (i dont have the eos r).
The xt 3 also has touch focus and tap to shoot. In evf mode the xt3 gives you the option to use different parts of the lcd screen to use to drag your focus point which makes it much more accurate and quicker.
Great point on the one-handed-use, this is one of the reasons the latest Canon and Nikon models couldn’t win me over. Two small comments though: the Sony does let you move the focus point on the screen, in fact you can limit the touchy area to one side of the screen so as not to constantly change the focus point with your nose - however I’ll grant you the Sony touch-implementation is horrible in comparison. Also, while the Sony doesn’t show you the exact focus point in playback mode, when enlarging an image it automatically zooms in on the point of focus, at least in my experience. Otherwise, great summary 👍
yeh I pinned Dunna's comment regarding the touch focus whilst using the EVF, news to me but glad to learn it does work, that being said I tested it and its pretty awful in comparison to the R. Oh well :)
Marc Nappier True, with Nikon it was the other buttons / wheels on the left side of the viewfinder that put me off. Design-wise I really enjoy the more recent Lumix GX-bodies: tilty-flippy screen, tilting viewfinder all the way to the left so that your nose isn’t always against the screen, good touch implementation and completely onehanded use possible (whilst about the same size as the Sony A7-models)
Well done Chris, that was a great review! Since I have not used the Canon EOS-R or the XT3 I learned a lot from your interaction with them. Bottom line? all three are great cameras and would work fine for any user. I was a Canon user for decades and there is a special place in my heart for their gear, but I did move on because of their relentless hammer swinging! Lol Regardless, Canon is waking up and that’s fantastic. We need them back innovating and pushing the industry forward. So yeah, keep it up Canon! On a side note, I have had three occasions with my Sony a7III where I have changed a lens and the shutter was down, covering the sensor. In fact the first time I used that camera and went to place a lens on it straight out of the Sony box, I noticed the sensor covered. So, there are instances where the shutter does come down and stays down, but I have not intentionally tried to duplicate that. There is the perceived fear of damaging the shutter but if you’re careful, I would imagine that could be a bonus when needed. Anyway, that was just a tidbit. Well done on the review and I’m curious if you will be keeping the EOS-R. Cheers 👍
Agreed! All good in their own ways, none are perfect. I have had the same with the shutter, It would be nice to see a way to force it to stay closed and provide a little extra protection to the sensor.. maybe in future models?
nice I use sony and fuji love the two, but for photografy the fuji is more easy... something that upsets me at sony is the unique brand that doesn't have double exposure on the camera....
I chose the EOS R over the A7iii because I prefer the flip screen for shooting low angle portraits. I shoot a lot this way for editorial shoots. Also, the EVF is so much better on the R as is the touch screen. The R also feels great in the hand. For me, these pros outweigh the cons of the R. I find with the RF glass (15-35,50,85, 70-200) I'm happy with the final output. Can't go wrong either way. I'm invested in RF glass now so very excited to see what the new R cameras bring.
@@chrisbrockhurst I hear ya. You definitely pay the Canon tax for the RF glass but if you have the money, why not? If the system is too pricey for folks, they can buy Sony with their G master glass which used to be some of the most expensive on the market. Personally I prefer the more "exotic" 1.2 primes. All good options these days though.
I like my R, however I think it's too heavy with the RF lenses. And I thought going mirrorless is to make the camera lighter and more convinient, so thinking about getting Fujifilm.
Switched from Fuji X-T3 to SONY and love it. More lenses and better grip ;-) But: Most of the serious photographers set their right front + rear dial to aperture/ss/iso.
As a Fuji user, I agree with many things you said, like the grip being silly (I use a L bracket grip on all my XTs) and the menu not remembering last position. However, you got a few things wrong (exactly because you don't have enough experience with the system). 1 - The XT3 can easily be a one-hand camera. Just set the ISO dial to 'A' and use the front command wheel. 2 - Adobe being incompetent is not Fuji's fault. Capture One has a superior RAW processor, not just for Fuji RAW files, but, any RAW files. It also handles colour far better than Lightroom. It's the industry standard among studio professionals for a reason. 3 - I find the Sony menus excruciatingly bad and illogical. It's common knowledge by now. Fuji menus are deeper, but laid out rather logically. Btw, the Stills/Video quick switch, independent of each other, is now fixed with the XT4. 4 - The latest firmware on the XT3 brought it's Eye AF capabilities very close to Sony's. 5 - About skin tones, I'm sorry, even professional Sony users have said that Sony colours, especially for skin tines in video, are terrible compared to Fuji and Canon. No matter how much you try to correct it in post. 6 - Fuji film simulations are not just for great-looking, easy JPEGs. They give you a great starting point for RAWs. Not in Lightroom of course, because it can't handle that right either. 7 - The sensor on the XT3, despite being APS-C size, is superior to the 4 year old mediocre sensor in the EOS R. Also, if video is someone's primary need, the EOS R shouldn't even be an option compared to the other two.
I had an EOS R for a couple of days before I returned it, just wasn't too impressed by it. I had an XT3 and returned it because of the dials, but I loved the pictures I got out of it. Now I'm looking at getting a used A7iii and a couple of lenses for 2k, but a part of me is still stuck on the Fuji. I almost want an XH1 just for the better grip and the Fuji colors. The XT3 was fun despite my initial confusion and I'm sure I can figure the dials out with time. For travel, portraits, street photography I think either will work. One part of me says get the Sony, and another says look at Fuji 🤦🏽♀️
Fuji xt-2 user. felt like your review was spot on. I dislike the Fuji green colors for landscape. They are not natural at all. I use Lightroom. Tried capture one and felt the images look better to me in Lightroom. I have heard people say the xt-3 colors look different from the xt-2 in capture one. I did not like the interface in capture one either. I want to try a full frame camera next. I have no brand loyalty or preference. I am interest to see how the next iteration of the full frame mirrorless will come out. Canon may be best of the pack.
Thanks Paul, appreciate that coming from a current Fuji user. Alot of people seemed to think I was overly bias towards the Fuji but I stand firm that everything I said was exactly how it is.. so nice to hear that from someone else too. Cheers.
The R5 is gonna blow A74 out of the water when it arrives. Don't think anyone is gonna come close to Canon this year. I'm waiting on the R5 for sure. But if Sony have made many changes like new screen and also flipp and better evf and new menus I'll go back to Sony. Just sold my A7III and went to Canon EOS R. And yes Sony is a better camera in more ways then one. But i almost shoot with the screen and having big problems using that on my A7III
It's not gonna cost 5000$ it's gonna be around 3600 wait and see. And also I'm not bashing Sony I love Sony but they have changed many things but not that crappy display or menus which they should have done on the A7III in my opinion already. Looked att the R4 and well its a bit better with better grip and display and still not good enough.
I think if you don't use Capture One with a Sony...you are missing a trick. Sure the interface takes some getting used to, but it is much, much, much better than anything else I have used. I still use Affinity for retouching, and On1 for some effects, but for actual RAW processing Sony RAW (and apparently for Fuji too) ...you cannot get better than Capture One.
I was pretty happy with Canon then moved to fujifilm xt2's, had about 3 of them now and an xt100 and xh1 but then bought a a7iii and it feels so good, the weather sealing is too good just the screen sucks big time (resolution) and since i shoot manual white balance and stuff,it's pretty good so far. I'm pretty much happy with the a7iii in terms of how it performs and also how it's built like a tank.. My xt2's got wet in rain and the board died and the viewfinder worked only. One spare body sat home always and then one day it stopped working (the screen) and the iso dial fell out lmfao. So spent about 3000nzd for repairs (3x xt2's and xt100,xh1) whereas Sony still going strong..
You can technically one-hand the Fuji X-T3 as well, changing aperture and ISO with the right handed wheels, but why would you? The other thing you would need to do is map playback to one of the other function buttons if you are counting that into the equation for "one-handing" which, again, you can do. Yes, the grip sucks, which is making me think about the XH-2, assuming it comes...
Nice and objective comparison! Agree with your choice of grip. Funny though that in the analog age nobody seemed to complain about grips - looks at his Nikon F3 - or maybe that was just because we didn't have social media back then ;-)
There's only one dude on the planet that said he's not impressed by Fuji's colors. Can't remember his name but he's the same chap that said the menus are complicated. Most believe he's an idiot. Great review...
IMO, pictures from every camera look better in Capture One. It is way less fun to use than Lightroom for sure though, but it makes up for it (to me at least) by offering a one-time purchase option
Great information, sure, but let's all keep in mind that these days, every 6 months one manufacturer equals or surpasses the others. You can almost mark your calendar to it and then it's "Time to switch?!!?" all over again. People, don't get nuts over this see-saw. You'll be chasing forever.
Old video, but commenting on the fuji sims, only to then say you shoot RAW is a borderline oxymoron. Yes you can easily apply a sim in post to a RAW file, but the main selling point for fuji and their sims is that you can literally make any adjustment you want prior to shooting a jpg and pretty much avoid any post work...
5:00 The menu that can't remember where you were drove me C-R-A-Z-Y with Fuji cameras. That is a huge irritation point for me. I can't believe how bad that design is. Menus SHOULD remember where you were. That's obviously the correct way to design a menu. Why does Fuji insist on doing it the WRONG way?! I don't care that you can have it always open to My Menu first. That's not good enough. Sony makes bad menus, but in this respect Fuji is actually worse.
@@williamashrafzadeh3701 It most definitely does NOT remember menu positions except for the MY menu. I have a XT3, XT20 and an XH1. Same behaviour on all. Of course, all three are on latest respective firmware.
Deep tut tut! I in fact am a a73 user but tried the canon EOS R last week fb send it back. And sold my xt2. I think the ar3 is fantatsic but the screen is so bad. But still choose it over the others
Very helpful! THE main reason to keep Sony for me is how much I can rescue from the shadows. Very important to me. So I appreciate you speaking to that. And the 4k crop in eos R, not good.
I think almost everything is pretty accurate. The menu systems are not that big of a deal if you have a lot of buttons, but I think that Fuji is a bit easier than Sony's menu. Probably you just need to use both cameras long enough to learn it. But there is one thing I don't agree with, and that's dynamic range. In my opinion, Fuji is really close to Sony, like around 1 stop lower, and this is why it is the best APS-C camera in the world. And Canon is just well below Sony or Fuji in terms of dynamic range. Also just for you to know before you would rage on what I said, I'm a Fuji user but for your (and for my surprise too :)))) I'm thinking on switching to Sony (so just that you don't think that I'm a fanboy...)
Been an owner of the x-t4 for a while now and prior to getting into the system (had no system prior, not considering an old ass Nikon), I tested the Sont a73 and Canon EOS R and I passed on them because they were…well…boring. I am a hybrid shooter and the Fuji offering just got me excited (4K 60 DCI?, hell yea). The x-t3 I didn’t like because the battery sucked and I’m not a fan of tilting screens, I needed the articulating one. The fact that you can shoot 15 FPS mechanical in RAW and 30 FPS ES it’s very good in certain situations. Sony has a green tint and Canon has more of an orange tint, while Fuji kinda goes Magenta for their film sims as well. I love my Fuji and I don’t care about the FF vs APS-C debate:). Kudos on the comparison.
Will be interesting to see what the fuji Xt4 will bring to the table. I will wait for an a7sIV release, but if sony will not deliver with this, I will give Fuji a chance.
Not owning any of these cameras (I shoot mainly Olympus and Panasonic), I disagree about colour science and I can instantly recognize a canon (unedited) portrait, while I find the green and yellow on Sony much less pleasing. Fuji is somehow in the middle. About all the rest I like this video, which is pretty informative for someone undecided. I especially like the "low light" argument putting Fujifilm in it's place (where most review tells amazing stuff about "seing in the dark" BS): a Full frame sensor is better at retrieving underexposed pictures even with Canon sensors not being ISO invariant as Sony and Fuji are.
"It doesn't take you back to the same menu system again." That's why it's good to use "My settings" on Fuji X - you put the most used settings for you, and every time you click "Menu" button, MY settings will be automatically selected. Simple as that.
Can u help me picking from them. I. Not able to come to a conclusion even after watching the video twice. I wanna mostly click portraits , street photography and a little wildlife.
Interesting to see the comparison between these. I have been looking at the Fuji xt3 as so many people have been talking about it! I love that vintage look to it too but it looks so capable
@@chrisbrockhurst I see! Haha yeah to be honest I think the edgy design was always going to have ergonomic downsides! The EOS R looks really good to be honest. Never used Canon before, but I would love to give one a try one day!
I do wish there's a record button that will use the settings base on what recording you set before hand (1080 etc) and if you want to change movie move then the custom setting is there like what the sony got. at least the Nikon with the Z50 as fart as i know has the quick switch between movie and photos and 2nd place goes to sony that you need to rotate that dial between photo and movie (unless i forgot that sony has a record button or not?) basically there should be a video record button instead of even requiring a switch to change between the two modes
I thought Fuji's AWB was the best, followed by Canon and in very last place, Sony. As to any of these three cameras, once you are out of the menus, they all allow for you to stay out of the menu system. In fact, i rarely use the menu system on my a7iii and didnt' have a need for it with any of the fuji cameras I briefly handled either. It's all much of a muchness tbh. Just go with what yu like!
Spending less time in editing software is life-changing for me.
what Canon model did you have and what Fuji model did you switch to? And your lenses?
Thanks for reply
sorry but what's the fuji look
Ok. Sold my A7iii and bought the Fuji x-t3. Best decision for my part. We can discuss back and forth between these camera. Their all great. Comes down to personal taste.
battery life was why I ditched Fuj and moved to sonyi, but love the lens. Im looking forward to the XT4. that may sway me back to fuji
@Micah Yamanakathis is not my experience even with 6 spare batteries it was a pain. its not suitable for work or even holidays. the sony rocks with they new battery. However the fuji xt4 might be amazing
Doing this withthe Xt-4
Micah Yamanaka I have an X-T3...how the hell did you get 1400 shots with a single battery?!!!
@Micah Yamanaka bullshit xt3 with 1400raw in single charge
Oh man to each his own. I’ll take knobs and dials anyday over digital menus.
Can't imagine my life without fuji dials anymore 🤣
I actually switched from Sony a7III to Fuji X-t3 because how confusing the menu system on the Sony cameras is. Every every other Sony users seem to agree on this as well. While the Fuji is not perfect, it is definitely easier to navigate its menu system compared to Sony.
that is just proof that you didnt use the Sony long enough to appreciate the button customization and probably picture profiles that makes that camera awesome
@@James-dy6zh you can customize everything on the fujifilm every button every scroll wheel etc etc etc.
I can't switch cause of the menu...
Once you customize your buttons it’s pretty straight forward
Long time Fuji XT1 user here.. the only time I go into the menus is when I need to reformat the SD card. The three dials on the top plate and the aperture ring on the lense are all I need. Thanks for the video, very informative.
@Chris I use the XT3 full time and you can reassign the left ISO dial to the right function dials either on the front or back. I've used it with one hand several times. I agree the grip with horrible. I've gotten used to it now.
Work: XT3
Hobby: XT3
i love my fuji.
Can't be more agree with the AF. Canon smooth and Sony is Fast both have different approach and both quite reliable
yeh I felt like that statement was as true as it is and nobody else really says that.
I appreciate the effort that went into this video. Great way to analyze these cameras from a different perspective.
thanks!!
Thanks man, good to see a Fuji user chime in here. The issue I have with the menus, anyway around that? bothers me haha
EXCELLENT VIDEO!!! Just what I needed
Nice to see someone actually comparing things and giving honest opinions.
I try my best :) Wanted to cover things that I doth see talked about alot and genuinely affect how you use all these cameras.
Not many people seem to be talking about the zoom issue with Fuji lenses. I found many of the video shoots I did, the footage would go blurry when zooming in and out unless I put the camera in auto. This was with all updated firmwares too. I tried 70-200 2.8, 18-55, 16-55. Meant I couldn't use the thing for shooting gigs and sports events where I needed to reframe shots on the fly.
hmmm interesting, can't say I had that issue with the 18-55
@@chrisbrockhurst That reminds me... with the 18-55, (and other lenses) did you encounter a strange exposure stepping shift even when stopped down to f4? It would get suddenly lighter or darker as you move through the zoom range. That was another reason I felt dubious to leave my Sony gear.
Here's a link showing an example of the exposure shifts. (shot on X-H1, but t3 does the same) This is with the 16-55 2.8 as well, so it's not because it's a variable aperture lens that isn't stopped down. Im just surprised more people aren't flagging these problems for video, as they were deal breakers for me. ua-cam.com/video/Cb3MLj9NJjQ/v-deo.html
Interesting, though fuji doesnt have a 70-200 2.8, they have a 50-140 2.8 however
Love the "Canon cripple hammer" reference.... cough.... Go Camera Conspiracies...... cough
his reach is far haha
Ive actually started using exposure 5 and for me the fuji raws look amazing. Sharper than capture one and software ui is very similar to lightroom.
I friggin love my XT3... but do you have any experience with the Z6? I own both, and can't bring myself to commit to just one. Cameras are so good these days.
Not yet! I don't personally see why we should commit to one anymore. If you like two, use em both!
Hi Tommy have you tried prores raw in nikon z6?
Use both. Keep a large FF and a compact apsc
@@spector175 Nope! I haven't sent my z6 in for an upgrade, and I don't use final cut pro. Honestly, I love the Z6's flat profile by itself, even though it's only 150mbps, it's perfect for me and saves on hard drive space.
@@TommyCallaway yeah flat profile looks quite good for indoor shots, prores raw support will be coming to adobe premiere in future updates.
Quality video here for those debating between these cameras, good work as always brotha!
Cheers Jonathan, appreciate it man
Nice video. I wanted to know how the screen of the EOS R is compared to my XT3's as I'm thinking of getting one, so thanks. I think you forgot to mention that the XT3 is the only camera of the bunch (maybe even only mirrorless camera) that can do 4K 60fps though?
its towards the end :)
Great, like you I was underwhelmed by the Fuji raw images, maybe because I'm too used to full frame Sony. Ebayed the X H1.
Mark Williams I have an a7iii and I can confirm that it can do this too. I use it all of the time to make sure I nailed the focus. Very useful!
Love that feature on my A7III
Yeh I agree that this is useful, just would be nice to have a little square highlighting that point of focus, guess we can't have it all haha
I’m mainly a wedding videographer, what is the best between Fuji and A7lll (which I already own). I’m getting tired of waiting for 4K60. Although nobody knows what the X-T4 & A74 will bring. The Fuji lenses are very good at half the price also
define best? there's so much to compare
Exactly the video i was looking for💯
appreciate the support!
Capture one just processes raw images differently. It’s not a Fuji thing. Sony and Canon images will look better in Capture One too.
Yeah Capture One is specific to each camera when you buy
At the end of the day its all personal preference anyways :)
thanks for the comparison. I really missed some image (look) comparisons though. Isn't that the most important thing concerning a camera?
I have been a Sony user since Sony took over Minolta. Recently I bought an X100V, then I sold all my Sony gear and bought an X-T3 with 3 zooms. No regrets. Yes, the A6600 and A7III have better grips, but I am perfectly able to operate the X-T3 with one hand, holding the leads of my two dogs with the other.
In terms of image Quality for cinematic vídeo: Sony a6600/7 iii or XT3?
I was waiting for this review for so long I'm glad that you made this review thankyou bro
made just for you
I can touch the screen to move the focus points on my a7riii, is the a7iii different?
not whilst looking through the EVF though I don't believe
@@chrisbrockhurst In setup menu, page 3 of 7, change Touch Panel/Pad setting, to Touch Pad. Then you can configure in Touch pad settings right below that. This will allow you to look through the elf, and move the focus point with your thumb on the screen.
Have any pictures been taken at all?
Bless your heart
Hi Chris, great comparison. Was hoping you would touch on the infamous no blackout in EVF when continuous shooting with the Canon eos r. Were you able to test this and if yes what are your thoughts? Is it a hindrance or something one can easily adapt to? Much appreciated :)
yeh its for sure there, compared to the A7iii its obvious but you get used to it after a whilst, I wouldn't say its a hindrance
The eos r handles it a bit differently than other cameras. Most cameras put a black screen between frames in the evf and the Canon leaves the previous image up so it seems like it's lagging behind a bit. Annoying but you can get used to it.
Idk if it's the new 3.2.0 update but my menu saves where I last was so..? I have no complaints
what grip do you have on your EOS R?
its an third party l bracket minus the side part.
@@chrisbrockhurst could you please share a link?
I will stay on Fuji for my pro work
Very nice comparison and opinion on the there cameras. 🤙🤙🤙
thanks man! keep up the good work yourself
@@chrisbrockhurst appreciate it! 🙏
So many great cameras coming out now
Husky and snotty
Reel Light Pictures ahahahah the mythical a7siii we all hope for and dream of. I really hope to see it actually appear this year
Is there a video on your back button focus process for Sony A7III? I never use the back button focus and would love to see it in action
I havnt done one but plenty of other people have
This is a fantastic comparison. Thank you!
Cheers Darren
Lol @ thinking sonys menus are easier than fujifilm
M S Sony’s menus are one of their worst traits, by far.
Idk why ppl always hating on the menus, for me it really isn’t a big deal. 95% of the time that I’m using the camera I’m not in the menu
Why don't you use zone focus? Or you set the touch on to the sony and then you can set the focus with touch too. Even when you are looking into the viewfinder. I use zone and if it doesn't find it i set it with the touch.
Zone doesn't work great for me, everybody has their own style - to be honest I find it very interested howe everyone does it differently.
It depends very ob the scene and yes wveryone does it a little different but of all the methos the sony still is a good choice! Thanks for the video. I think fujifilm has some interesting stuff in their lineup but sony is expensive enough for now😂
Aperture, shutter and ISO on X-T3 can all be mapped for one handed control.
please answer, choose eos r + rf 35mm f1.8 macro or Sony a7iii + fe 35mm f1.8, Truman for the answer
XT3 has the same colors as Canon’s but has much more features. Dual card slots is crucial if you’re a wedding photographer.
You can kind of check where your focus point on the a7iii, once you've taken your photo go into the playback and use the af-on button, this should expand your photo but it expands it to where you focused, i use this trick often
good point on color science. Its just perspective. Dont understand why many consider that a deal breaker
exactly, entirely personal opinion
How does the X-T3 compare to you a6400?
Good question.. very different cameras.
The a7iii allows touch focus! And it also allow that dragging thing when it is on evf mode! In fact, it is better to use than the xt3 for that function (i dont have the eos r).
Lot of ppl dont know this but this is the bast way to use sony touch screen in EVF mode so your nose will not mess up the focus point.
The xt 3 also has touch focus and tap to shoot. In evf mode the xt3 gives you the option to use different parts of the lcd screen to use to drag your focus point which makes it much more accurate and quicker.
@@kazcnepj thats right
Great point on the one-handed-use, this is one of the reasons the latest Canon and Nikon models couldn’t win me over.
Oh well :)
Nikon z cameras have on/off, two scroll wheels for aperture, shutter speed, iso button all on the right side. One hand use is perfectly fine on them.
Al Ka ahhh gotcha Sony has mode dial on the right side too. The top screen prevents that layout with Nikon. The GX is nice!
That was really good Chris 👍
Cheers Mark!
Good work simple and to the point
nice I use sony and fuji love the two, but for photografy the fuji is more easy...
something that upsets me at sony is the unique brand that doesn't have double exposure on the camera....
And for.video? Which camera has Best Image vídeo Quality?
This is probably as real as it gets. I pretty much agree with everything you said!
Cheers Scott, that's a gritty statement that I appreciate you used and exactly what I was going for, no fluff, actual hands on real world use.
I agree. This review is excellent.
You can touch and drag your thumb to focus on the Sony a7 III.
Sony has touch to focus. It doesn’t have draggable focus points where you use the screen to select them
Great comparison! What's your go to profile for Sony video?
thanks! I actually don't shoot in picture profiles. I use Autumn leaves creative style, im lazy and don't like to grade when I don't have to
hi. how did you color grade this video on a6400? it looks very good.
Neutral creative style! Little saturation bump and colour adjustment in post. No luts.
The RF glass is really nice, its just sooooo expensive compared to anything else out there
@@chrisbrockhurst I hear ya.
How didn’t you find the IQ difference?
This is an excellent review of these cameras.
Cheers.
I'm excited for the 2020 a7 IV vs Canon EOS R5 vs X-T4 battle!
XT4 = XT3 no chance. R5 is a Video champion. A7IV is the best camera 2020.
i have the fuji xt3 :)
@@ProferHarbach It's going to be exciting!
My.moody.photos that’s true, hard to compete a $5000 R5 camera vs a $2200 A7 IV camera.
Great comparisons Chris. What is the eye cup you have on the Sony and why?
Thanks! its a third party eye cup, just search A7iii eye piece on amazon and you see it. $12 I think
What kind of grip extension do you have on the Eos R ? Can someone tell me ?
its a third battery L bracket
Who doesn’t like it deep
hahaha
EOS R used for around $1100 in 2020 or Fujifilm X-T4. If you had to do one or the other and want to shoot 4K but also take great stills.
if you want to shoot 4k don't get the EOS R. The crop is stupid
Hey there, can you explain why Matt Granger got different result for eye autofocus in his test video he put out today?
AJ probably because it was Matt Granger ..😉
wish I could!
@@surrogatemarker lol... Well it wouldn't be the first time i heard that about him
Nice and objective comparison! Agree with your choice of grip. Funny though that in the analog age nobody seemed to complain about grips - looks at his Nikon F3 - or maybe that was just because we didn't have social media back then ;-)
haha I think everyone will always have a preference, I just love it bigger and grippier
There's only one dude on the planet that said he's not impressed by Fuji's colors. Can't remember his name but he's the same chap that said the menus are complicated. Most believe he's an idiot. Great review...
hmmm.
Dude, I totally thought you were taking images on all (3) cameras, and comparing them to each other... MY bad ! lol.
Agreed, there will always be something new and shiny
what's the plate Chris has under his A7III? I need one as well I guess :D His even looks nice.
Thanks in advance ^_^
Checkout my video ‘is a7iii worth it in 2020’ the link is 2nd down in the description ✌🏻
@@chrisbrockhurst thanks a lot Chris! Have a good one :)
Sigma FP. Quality wise is it better than all of the above?
A lot of people complain about this but my x-t3 saves where I last was, so I have no idea what you guys are talking about 😄👍
@@williamashrafzadeh3701 Are you talking about My Menu or the entire menu?
@@stanleeger4711 the entire menu. Id show you but I don't know how lol
@@williamashrafzadeh3701 It most definitely does NOT remember menu positions except for the MY menu. I have a XT3, XT20 and an XH1. Same behaviour on all. Of course, all three are on latest respective firmware.
@@EnterSpacebar yea I understand so I don't know how to explain my x-t3 as it seriously remembers my position in the menu
Deep tut tut! I in fact am a a73 user but tried the canon EOS R last week fb send it back. And sold my xt2. I think the ar3 is fantatsic but the screen is so bad. But still choose it over the others
yeh we really need to see better screens on the Sony
Very helpful! THE main reason to keep Sony for me is how much I can rescue from the shadows. Very important to me. So I appreciate you speaking to that. And the 4k crop in eos R, not good.
The dynamic range on the A7iii still blows my mind, you can shoot a terrible underexposed image and make it totally useable, its nuts.
I just sold all my Fuji gear to switch to Sony 🤷♂️
You gave the Sony a booster seat in your thumbnail
and the Canon, I forgot to put the Fuji bracket on
Will be interesting to see what the fuji Xt4 will bring to the table. I will wait for an a7sIV release, but if sony will not deliver with this, I will give Fuji a chance.
Agreed!
Nice work brother
Cheers man. Keep up the hard work. Your vids keep appearing in my recommended list, the algorithm is liking what you're doing!!
Thanks brother 👊 same with you , keep pushing man!!
"It doesn't take you back to the same menu system again."
That's why it's good to use "My settings" on Fuji X - you put the most used settings for you, and every time you click "Menu" button, MY settings will be automatically selected. Simple as that.
Can u help me picking from them. I. Not able to come to a conclusion even after watching the video twice. I wanna mostly click portraits , street photography and a little wildlife.
Great vídeo!!!! Could you recommend me one of them for stills? I want a versatile camera and the video doesn’t interest me... Thank you!
Any will be good!
Interesting to see the comparison between these. I have been looking at the Fuji xt3 as so many people have been talking about it! I love that vintage look to it too but it looks so capable
I won't spoil it but you'll probably figure out by the end my feelings on it haha
@@chrisbrockhurst I see! Haha yeah to be honest I think the edgy design was always going to have ergonomic downsides! The EOS R looks really good to be honest. Never used Canon before, but I would love to give one a try one day!
@@LukeMichaelJames if you are nearby Canon learning center, go there, u can try it there plus all the lenses (entire lens collection).
How long ago did you record this? you keep talking about the A7R4 coming... yet its been out a couple of months now????
Week before last. Everyone knows it's coming. Nobody knows when.
@@chrisbrockhurst it's been out.
Think he was saying a74 not a7R4.
@@Bonjurro makes sense. 👍
I do wish there's a record button that will use the settings base on what recording you set before hand (1080 etc) and if you want to change movie move then the custom setting is there like what the sony got.
at least the Nikon with the Z50 as fart as i know has the quick switch between movie and photos and 2nd place goes to sony that you need to rotate that dial between photo and movie (unless i forgot that sony has a record button or not?)
basically there should be a video record button instead of even requiring a switch to change between the two modes
exactly, would be great to see it in future models
Please compare the a7c and canon eos r 🙏🏻
I thought Fuji's AWB was the best, followed by Canon and in very last place, Sony.
As to any of these three cameras, once you are out of the menus, they all allow for you to stay out of the menu system. In fact, i rarely use the menu system on my a7iii and didnt' have a need for it with any of the fuji cameras I briefly handled either. It's all much of a muchness tbh. Just go with what yu like!
