Raccoons also kill for fun. I had one that came and took the head off my ducks. Several times because I couldn’t get the ducks to go into their house. I lost 2 that way. The ones I have now, I’ve raised from ducklings. So they go into their house at night. My chickens actually coop in a rabbit hutch that was built raccoon proof. So they’re safe. Currently working on a new door for my duck pen so it’s more secure.

I don't know why but I had a need to go check on my chickens last night. There was a group of Raccoons, at least 4 sets of eyes! Just down from my chicken house! I have double locks on my coop! It is scary to see that many Raccoons together out there! I saw an episode of I Was Prey, this lady was attacked by a raccoon, when she went out with her little dog! I've never felt the same way about Raccoons since seeing that!!
Love your videos! Stay well! GOD bless

You can't rely on hardware cloth to keep chicks safe. Just lost 7 chicks that were enclosed in a hardware cloth pen (bottom and all sides are hardware cloth). Raccoons snatched every bitty through the bottom of the hardware cloth pen leaving only their heads in the pen (heart breaking shock to say the least). Put chicks in something with a solid bottom and away from edges of pen. We brought the new clutch inside and put in an aquarium. Thanks for all the videos, Becky!

  • @mschilepepper10

I did the mistake of buying 6 “back yard” chickens without knowing anything about chickens or on how to care for them.
I also bought at the same time a chicken coop with an attached chicken run from the same feed store where I got my hens from.
Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that raccoons can break into those types of chicken coops very easily and after loosing one hen. I decided, I had to do some research.
I then purchased from Home Depot a 10x10x7 shed and converted into a lovely very safe chicken coop.
By doing it this way, I was able to save 45% in lumber cost than if, i bought all the lumber and built it myself..
I got the ideal from Pinterest and let me tell you guys, it turned out very very nice but most importantly my hens absolutely love it.
I love the fact that the chicken coop is now 7 feet tall which makes it very easy to clean.
In this new chicken coop my hens are now able to roost on a extra large 3 tier chicken roost that I built
In another area of the coop. I also built them a 9 egg nesting shelf unit and in each slot there’s a plastic dish tub filled with wood shavings plus drapes for extra privacy.
By using the plastic tubs it makes it a lot easier for cleaning and for refilling with shavings.
And because the coop is so wide, I was also able to take one 1/4 of the shed and convert it to a mini hospital should one or more of my hens need to be separated due to an illness, hurt or just need to take medication.
Plus, I have another small area where I am able to store all of the chicken feed..
Then, I built for my hens a large 20x40x10 chicken run out of treated 4x4’s lumber post and I also enclosed all the walls, including the roof plus 3 feet surrounding the outside of chicken run with hard wire cloth.
Where I live there is a lot of raccoon families, possums and birds that love to eat chickens. By doing it this way it keeps everything out.
Now no animal can climb, dig or break into my chickens run or the coop.
I also cover 1/2 of the chicken run roof with metal sheets for shade or to keep the rain and snow off of them.
I planted in the chicken run lavender and rosemary all along the edges for them to hide under if they choice plus this also makes the chicken run look and smell very nice.
In another area of the chicken run I plantfor them there own personal eatable garden to pick and eat from.
They also have toys, a swing plus a kids pool filled with extra soft sand and extra soft soil for dust baths.
And, i built them a very shallow pond with a rock water fall for fresh water at all times.
Everyone that comes over and see’s where my hens live and play cals it the chicken mansion with an oasis retreat garden.
I am retired and always out in my yard so my hens also have the advantage of being able to free range everyday with me for serval hours per day.

I haven't lost a chicken in a while, but I lost a duck a month ago. 7 of my chickens( 3 leghorns, 3 black sexlinks, and a RIR) free range 24/7. They have a covered roost they go to at night. It's up behind my covered garden swing I spend a lot of time in so has my smell on it. I think that helps deter the varmits. These hens lay eggs everywhere.(every day easter egg hunt) But lately I've only been finding 2 eggs a day, up high. I suspect racoons. I have a broody Buff Orpington in a nest box in a pen that also holds 8 ISA Browns and a Black Sexlink. She has been in there since the duck attack. (they were buddies and hung out together) She gives me another egg a day. My ISA Browns should start laying any day now. I built 2 new doors for the pen and have seen where something has tried to pull the 1/2 " hardware cloth off the doors with the cloth bent in. also teethmarks on the wood.(again racoons) so something is stealing my eggs. I will be trapping racoons. They taste good if cooked properly.
I love your channel and watch every new video.

Be careful of the raccoon parasites!!! 80% of the Racoons in North America have them, and it is deadly to mammals AND birds.
It's shed in the Racoon's feces. Racoons are immune to it, but it WILL kill you if infected.

Don’t leave dog food out. That is an easy one. Dogs don’t need access to food 24/7

Fake news, I heard that bears are actually herbivores, and so if that goes for bears, it goes for raccoons (joking, but hopefully you get the joke)

I clicked on link. Did not see blue print, only ad to buy a book... Your coop looks primitave from what one can see from your video. Your set up certainly does not look racoon proof.

forget the Electric fence for one thing Lowe's will Not ship You any PVC pipe or much of anything that will Not fit In a small box.
republican opossums and raccoons and armadillos have been terrorising Me for several months costing Me thousands of dollars they have tore out the house wiring and knock the heater over they have set My house on fire 5 times, I can Not even feed My Cat because of them, but Instead of having to shoot them all the time I decided to try a fence of course I can Not get a Dog because of all the Dog hoarders and I My money Is No good to coon hunters It has to be coon season for them to hunt only for fur
I used 1/2 Inch diameter 2 1/2 foot PVC pipe and use It as stakes to hold the electric fence wire and need to drill holes In the pipe to run the wire through and extra holes so rain will drain or put a cap on It, It works well but most of these electric fence energisers are 10,000 volts Its Not enough to go through the long hair of them opossums I seen them go right under the fence like It was Not there so I tried to build My own energiser with car part to get over 25,000 volts still did Not work very good next Idea a 400,000 volt police taser but I could Not figure out how to make the switching timer so It does Not burn the taser out and on top of that Tree limbs and stuff gets on the fence and shorts It out then plants grow touching the fence.
next to put of a Chicken wire fence all the local store around here are too expensive so I ordered some Chicken wire from Amazon but because of Verizon slow Internet service I really could Not see what was available I got 2 foot high fence and again because Lowe's will Not sell Me any PVC pipe anymore I ordered some Bamboo shoots for post but It only 3 foot high I also ordered some staples to hold the fence down but ran out of staples and ordered some more as soon as I could afford It but someone failed up the order and I Never received the staples so I ordered some staples from Home Depot and the took forever to deliver them, one time I was going to order a little Water valve from Home Depot and they wanted 35 dollars for shipping.
later I found out that Amazon has 3 foot high Chicken wire fence so I ordered some and reinstalled the fence but It still did Not work
a few weeks ago I found a web sight called Kill Pest and found out what I need Is 6 foot high Chicken wire then curve It outwards In the shape of a Horse shoes and bury 2 feet under the ground and 2 foot curve at the top but I have No more money left to do that and night after night I shoot them things trying to protect Myself and this place smells like dead animals.
also I have tried alarms to scare them away but most of them are stupid designed as using 3 aaa batteries and a remote control with a solar charger which does No good If In the shade, the best alarm I found looks like an Owl It uses 4 AA batteries It works right even after being In heavy rain but Its Not loud enough so I was going to wire a piezo buzzer Into It, I ordered some more from Walmart but again someone failed up the order and I Never received them.
