  • It's good to clean your chicken coop at least once a year. If your coop is dirty you could get sick chickens and they won’t lay eggs anymore. Watch to see how I clean my coop step by step.

    Hi. I have found cleaning some every day and scooping the poop daily, makes alot less work for me and my coop smells good all the time. You can also hang pieces of herbs like basil and rosemary in the coop for added freshness. Take care and happy chicken keeping!

      Is your coop area smaller than hers? I mean the area where they sleep? I clean mine daily too but my sleeping area is 1/4 of the size of the 1 featured here. My pen is larger but where they sleep isn't a huge space so it's easy to maintain

      I too clean my chicken coop daily and it has never smelled bad and it only takes me less than five minutes.
      I do have wood chips all over the floor and in there nesting boxes which makes the coop smell wonderful.
      Also, I find that my hens only poop from there roosting bar so I have very little poop to clean up daily.
      I also clean there nesting boxes but only once a month. Those never get messing but I like to make sure they always smell clean and have fresh wood chips.
      My chicken run is surrounded with lavender and rosemary so even the chicken run has a lovely smell to it at all times

      I clean it at least once a month but I also spot clean. I use a lemon/vodka/cinnamon/vanilla mixture to kill germs. It helps to bond with with the chickens too. They love a clean coop and it is very entertaining for them too. Love her videos and our coop is much smaller.

    I have been raising chickens for over a tear now. And it has been my experience that cleaning the coup once a week keeps my lady's happy. And more importantly Healthy . It is also much easier on my nose and my neighbors as well . I discovered first hand how much of difference it makes . I have 23 hens 1 rooster and 3 ducks . This time of year they average 9-13 eggs. In the warm long days of summer I can get as many as 18-23 . Happy Hens make for better taste and production . I also feed Organic exclusively . Even the bread I feed them as a treat . Which I learned from you. Thank you very much . Happy Farming my friend.

    I've been raising chickens for about 10 years now I'm 27 and my coop had never smelled ...at all..it may have a dust smell but never a poop or ammonia smell...I clean my coop once a month every month..my coop is also an antique lol my great papaw built it in 1936 and it has been in the family ever since luckily I inherited the farm he had and everything on it so coop come with it of course lol but it is beautiful..every single thing on it is original to when my great papaw made it except the floor I've had to replace the floor and I remade the nesting boxes and a few of the roost but other everything is almost 100 years old in my hen house

    I always coat my roosts with diatomaceous earth because it kills mites that come off their legs when they roost at night.

    • @TheOregonOutlaw

      Toss half a bucket in the "dust bath" and they're well protected with a self application.

    • @rd4469
      @rd4469 5 років тому +1

      @RandomWench how often do you apply Diatomaceous earth? My chicks are only a month old and not outside yet because they are too young... and it's too cold outside. I just applied DE to all of them because one of birds is having a hard time growing feathers on her both sides of her neck.
      They've only been outside 3 times because it's been too cold here and they are so young....but only one bird is effected.

    • @NPC.6
      @NPC.6 5 років тому +2

      @@rd4469 I just place dust in their natural dust bath spots where they roll in it when they feel like it, other than on the roosts for leg mites. Keep them on a grower feed with higher protein to help their feathers come in. The bald one can be supplemented with some mealworm protein if you feel like it, for feather growth. They shouldn't need any DE applications that young if they are still being kept indoors and its winter - too much dust can cause respiratory issues with minimal winter air circulation. Some brands of DE on Amazon come with a plastic puffer applicator that you can use to puff the DE up under their wings and feathers if you have an actual mite issue that needs treated - otherwise just use it in feed and as a preventative.

    Deep bedding technique works the best and excludes the heavy smells that create concerns for overall health .
    The downside for the right bedding is of course expense . But layering the bedding can result in the best overall cleaning experience as far as how often .
    For those who don’t mind cleaning that’s really great you clean daily . But those of us who have so many irons in the fire id point you to deep bedding .
    However The video is great !

    I treat all animals with a high level of sanitation.... clean my coops, barns, etc twice a week or more if needed. "Avoid problems so you don't have to solve them" is something i live by. Healthy happy animals, healthy happy homestead. I like your personality.

    Becky, you made me laugh with your trials and errors while trying to get to the point of pressure washing your chicken coop. When I set out to do a project, I almost always go through various issues with the project. So it was enjoyable watching you with this project. I guess misery loves company. LOL. I have watched so many of your videos since discovering your channel. We just got baby chickens about three weeks ago and your videos telling me what to do has helped immensely. My little girls are doing great! Thank you!

    We have an insulated coop and we use pine bedding. Doing the deep bedding method. The warmth of the coop is great. My hens are still laying 4-8 eggs a day.

    Minimum I would say deep clean every 6 months. Do a weekly clean out of obvious poop buildup, and put in new nesting material. Put down white food grade diatemeacious earth to keep bugs and mites out. I’m 28 years old have had livestock since I was born. We raise a lot of chickens, ducks, turkeys, sheep, pigs, and at points off and on throughout my life have had milk goats and milk cows. My husband and I also farm 1200 acres of wheat and pinto beans. It’s a hard busy life, but you must take care of your animals better. The better their space is clean the healthier they will be and the better they will produce for you. 😊

      2 or 3 times a year minimum - depending on the number of birds is definitely a minimum - at once a year... disease is common.

    • @chelseagarchar4338
      @chelseagarchar4338 5 років тому +1

      TheOregonOutlaw yes I’m surprised that her chickens are not in a lot worse shape. Have upper respiratory problems or mite problems. The deep cleaning is for the scrubbing of the walls and such. The weekly clean out is for the majority of poop and giving fresh bedding.

    • @brendasmith5937
      @brendasmith5937 5 років тому

      @@chelseagarchar4338 look at her coop. It is open and has good ventilation. She only houses 8 chickens in there. Deep litter method works great even at once a year when done correctly. Her bedding is pretty dry.

    My 83 year old dad and I are building a 12'x12' storage shed out of scrap lumber on my property. So far all I've had to buy is nails and screws.
    It's not perfect, not even square in some areas. But when using reclaimed wood that's warped over the years, you do what what ya gotta do.
    The foundation we built it on is floor Joist from a neighbor's house that was built in 1891.
    Y'all would be shocked at what people throw away.
    Especially with the cost of lumber right now.
    My shed is built of the wood and siding from places around where I lived as a youngin.
    Slow process building in spare time for him and me. But it's time I get to spend with my dad building something I'll get many decades of use out of.
    Oh, and I just got tin for the roof. Barn siding $30.
    I'll have enough left over from the wood and tin to build a large chicken coop.
    Just bought 6 baby chickens. (5 left, 4 year old nephew dropped 1 and it didn't make it. 😪 ).🐓
    Purchased a manufactured coop at Tractor Supply Company ($370 with tax). Only hoods 6. I want more than 6. I love fresh eggs.🥚
