One roo with 12 hens is perfect! We had a large cluster of chickens (about 30).
The 3 roosters were fine; two were subordinates, and didn't fight...one roo was King.
They were Bantams, very gentle and sweet tempered (this was 60+ years ago).
We fed them regular chicken feed, and ALL our table scraps, including meat; they LOVED ham bits, and any meat they received was eaten first.

Our chickens free range and we currently have 7 hens and 3 roosters from our original flock. We are getting more hens, but I’d like to add why having more than one is important in our case from my observations. Once they are out of the coop, some hens may go right to laying, others start roaming and the roosters split up to watch over the hens in different areas of the property. If a hen is done laying and there isn’t a rooster nearby, she calls out and one or sometimes two run to meet her and bring her to the flock. They often crow to let them know where the rest of the group is. There is some coop drama at night just before going in the coop at night, but it ends once they get in, just like if it were a bunch of hens being door bullies. Currently building another coop to see if they separate themselves into smaller flicks as we add hens. Chickens are so much fun!

I give all our chickens left over roasted chicken, turkey and ham. They LOVE it. It’s so sweet to watch our roosters call their ladies over to eat some of the yummy leftovers. Great advice! Chickens won’t go after rats though. Mice, yes but rats, no. We had a rat living in our garage last summer and it came out when the flock was out as well, they ran away from it. We were shocked! We thought chickens will go after anything smaller then them. Nope. So we trapped the rat and let it go about 10 miles away from our house. No rat since.

We had a hawk take out several of our girls. They didn't hesitate to feed on their deceased sisters in the short time span before we discovered the carnage. For the record, these chickens are free range on an unsprayed orchard getting regular feed, so well-fed birds, if not spoiled on the bounty of California. Long story short, chickens are inherently cannibals, opportunistic feeders much like their dinosaur ancestors. Feed them chicken, or not. Don't assign them human characteristics.

Jenifer chickens will eat each other on their own. Any chicken that gets a small bloody spot will get pecked to death and eaten by the rest. That is why I always say to remove the hurt or sick chicken tight away and don't put it back until it is completely healed☀️❤️☀️

The "neighbor" : Just throw all the roosters and hens together! It should be fine!
Me: I'm sorry.... What? .... Why would you do that?

    I have a thing
I have a fully grown rooster(he keeps violating my poor hens and takes off their back feathers >:0)
    And 8 fully grown hens
    And 2 half grown "hens"
    But
    Just half an hour ago
I showed someone my dear Cappucinno :0, wich is one of tha half growns, and they were like
    Thats a rooster
    And i was like
HOW DA HECC CAN YOU KNOW
    And they were like
That tail is too big for a not grown hen
And then they picked Cappucino up by the wings, and she/her hold hes/her feet straight and down to the ground
And they saud that hens should hold their feet close to the body, its a rooster
    And i was like
    *shook*

Chickens are vegetarians....yeah right! Toss in a hand full of meal worms or horn worms from your garden and they will love you for it!

We had a black hen come onto our property and she would just hang out in the front yard. We keep our chickens out back and away from our home, but we let her just wander. Well, she went missing for a few weeks and then, one day, she showed up with 5 chicks. After a while, she took off and left those chicks here! Well, our big rooster doesn't like the three roosters and our hens hate the black hens. The five, now two hens and three rooters, get fed here and they hang out here, but the big rooster won't let them into the coop. So, they roost at night in our big oak tree. I worry about them, but have no idea how to get rid of them. Any advice for that? I'm elderly and am not able to chase down chickens/roosters and certainly can't climb up on the roof to get them when they are roosting! LOL It's a mess. :0)

My chickens get meal worms every day. They are spoiled rotten because they get bread, watermelon, honeydew melon, grapes, corn and a lot of grains.

Too much fat like black oil sunflower seeds and such is not good for them. They will develop fatty liver disease, and heart problems. I started to limit snacks to my hens to maybe 5% of there diet and they look so much better. There poop isn't runny anymore too.
