I just came back from a session where I helped a 220 lbs middle aged dude to get on a large foil with this tip: The center of gravity is in the hips. So as soon as you feel the lift, move the center of gravity forward and that means the hips. Hips are even more important when you get to foot switches when hips have to be stable and salsa foot work have to happen under them just like in the salsa dance. Nobody is talking about it this way but I find it very helpful.
Well done Papa Light, you did awesome. As an older 50 year old gent, just had first lessons with wing, coming from kiting and kite foiling but looking for something easier and safer to get in and out of water. Finding balancing on board getting started a challenge, however inspired by James. Keep sharing your progress!
Excellent Vid! I'm just beginning my wing evolution after being a longstanding kiteboarder and windsurfer and I'm 62 yrs old.. The drone footage really helps to watch your dad get going on the board! and you following with go pro while you are winging. Great!
The old man is a stud and makes learning look easier than it is. He obviously knows how to sail and is comfortable on a board as the board is only 20L more than his weight. He has a good stance and posture and knows how to position the sail out in front of him. Helps to have the right wing, board and foil setup, strong wind conditions, flat water, and a son chasing him in a boat. For less experienced and athletic types, expect the learning curve to be quite a bit longer. However, the journey is well worth it. I never thought after only 18 months of winging at 52 years old, I would be catching 20x more waves than the local surfers.
just the sort of video we need! I was discussing winging with a frieind yesterday, who opined that we were too old! This would sugest not, i dont know how old James is but I don't feel particularly old at 65! I am a bit bored with sailing and have been toying with getting back into windsurfing but it actually needs a lot of kit even if you rule out doing it in under 14 knots. Apart from the learning curve this looks a lot simpler; I could probably get away with much less kit and sail ina wider wind range. I'm probably a bit bigger than James but ti would be interesting to know weight in realtion to board volume and wing size. Hopefully there will be a progress video
I am 58 years old and weight about 100kg. The board is 120lt so has enough volume for me. You can use the wing as a stabiliser when getting started in chop.
The foil size was 2400 cm2 and wing size 5.5. I really like winging, last year no kite or windsurf sessions anymore only winging! For your weight I would take an even bigger size wing in I think. Maybe 6 or 7 meter. In the beginning it is easier to have enough power. I did not find it easy and enjoyed the learning curve. Have fun!
I like the intro with the bridge duck. havnt tried one of these limbo moves yet. Its cool a lot of guys in this wing foil community are older I hope I keep winging till the day I die
Didn’t look that easy and it isn’t. I seem to remember Sams first videos LOL. You didn’t seem too impressed in the beginning and that honesty made me watch your other videos. Personally windsurfing (higher end in the surf and with sinker boards) was one of the hardest things I’ve ever loved to learn and do. Kiteboarding even when I started experimenting with it with 2 line foils was always easier, better, more versatile, more ergonomic, and a lot more dangerous than all. I’m a larger older guy now and with all the gear focused on little sized people, it’s a bitch to learn. I had to build my own board to get it done initially. No matter how old or your size, the conditions needed for learning are rare. It’s not an easily accessible activity except for those who already live in a windy low chop area. I may still keep trying but as I get older, accessibility has become very important to me. It’s pretty dang hard to beat my Onewheel to name one. You can also have a blast with a Onewheel and a small wing sail …lol Seems like there’s been so many videos trying to promote this sport. Even Naish will tell you it’s not his ultimate preference. I’m glad you guys are having fun and that’s what it’s all about. I wish I could have done as well with it as you dad. Unfortunately I 15 yrs older, bigger, and I don’t have a spotter in a boat to bail me out.
Great video I subscribe your channel I’m beginner bought new equipment, have plan going on the water tomorrow Many thanks for free access to foil academy You make very good job👍👏💪
Nice video. I'm a grandfather wing foiler, too (65 yo, myself). Please explain the dangling harness line? Do you attach second end if needed (on the water?). How do you attach? Thanks, Paul

Great stuff, your dad is now officially hooked!
Nice one breddah! So sick to see pops out! My dad is just starting to get the bug as well

Fantastic video! Glad your father has fun winging
Thanks for sharing! I am 64 and took my first foil lesson today. He gives me hope that i can get there! Big thumbs up!
Great to see your hand placements while you were winging. Your dad killed it!

That's the coolest thing could be done with your dad!
That’s pretty amazing for a third time. I’m 53 and just had my third session. He’s killing it.

Awesome!!! You are inspiring me to get out there!!!

Foil academy by Slingshot is fantastic

That steady wind is a dream!
Savage “foiling grampa” love it 😂👏🏽
That’s an amazing video of your dad and you ❤

I wish I could get 20 knots with small waves like that! It would make learning much easier. Great effort by your dad.
0:23 'He has done it once or twice in LIGHT winds'. Nice one Sam. I see what you did there. 👍
Cool! Congrats to the BigMan :)
Great video, fantastic to see father and son enjoying the sport together. I would be the Dad if that was me, LOL
Very impressive !
Looks like a good spot for it - is it the entrance to langstone harbour?
Your dad is Sean Connery from "the rock"
Two more sessions, your dad will be flying like you
Fair play to him!! Great place to live too. Can't beat the IOW
We live on Hayling Island, much better than Isle of Wight ;)
@@SamLight ah sorry mate. Your right that is better ;)
Amazing! Would you say it is easier to learn foiling and winging together then transfer foiling to kite after?
Good one!
Inspiring
Cool luv seeing that
Great video 👍🏄🏼♂️
What gear is Your Dad on Sam? Love your work 👌🏻
i am kinda thinkin one day will i sell all my windsurfing gear and by a complete wingdinger setup..
Where is this location of yours guys? That's awsome
but in my defence its hard to fault windsurfing with a foil and a big sail and a Slalom Board
Very good video!!
What gear were you on Sam? 926/92/400? 60/75L wingcraft? 5m Slingwing?
Very inspiring
Do another video when your father progresses and describe what he did to improve skills.
Are you in the US? in salt water? I wonder because would you need a life jacket in fresh water? Or a helmet?

You make very good job👍👏💪
where are you foiling ?
Langstone Harbour, Hayling Island
This has helped built like your dad but maybe a bit older ... hopeful
That flag doesn´t indicate 20 knots. maximum 7..Outside maybe?
How old is your grandpa?
I am Sams dad, but grandpa to his daughter
You wouldnt say that to his face. Could probably shoulder press you.
I'm 64 wing foiling on north sea Netherlands ( if more wind than. 30:knots then kitesurf - below 10 -12 knots kitefoil or SUP)
Nice video. I'm a grandfather wing foiler, too (65 yo, myself). Please explain the dangling harness line? Do you attach second end if needed (on the water?). How do you attach? Thanks, Paul
That harness line came undone during the session and I was too lazy to tie it back up
That's cool
