Aloha. Gratitude for this happy video. I will try your tips because I'm have difficulty to go upwind 😅
I love your training vids. I'm at it three months now, had 3 local lessons, and all your wingfoil vids. Now getting good. PS, never kited and was 65 at my start.
Great to hear! Congrats on your progression! We have a lot more videos to come... Enjoy the ride..
Hey, Psychic soul mate! I'm 62 and also have no kite experience or significant Sail board work. Lot's of paddleboarding however. I'm a bit behind you in my progress, but I'm following all Damien's good advice. You might also check out the OK Kiteboarder vids. and his "Just Winging It" series. These guys are some good teachers. Enjoy!
It's inspirational seeing people get into challenging activities at any age. Good on you :D
@@paddleboarddog :-). It's now almost 2 years on, soon turning 67. Never had so much fun and never been as fit as I am now. Having an absolute blast.
Solid gold advice guys! I've been struggling for months to get this, none of the other wingfoil videos I've watched have been as helpful as yours.
So happy to hear Steve! Have a great day!
Really REALLY nice details guys!! The angled edge stuff is big (for me) and makes so much difference. Thank You!!!
Thank you Mike!
Great tips for the upwind travel. Really makes a difference.
Glad we could help friend!
Great Video and Infos.in 2 Weeks I will have my Wingsetup and will do all you teached us. Thx from Vienna Austria:)
Great Eric! Glad we could help! Excited for you guys!
Thanks guys very helpful for progression! After 15 years kiting it's so refreshing to learn something new, this sport is going to be sooo big I did only 4 sessions so far so I'm struggling a bit upwind but with your videos I'm learning a lot, can't wait to hit the waves haha thankssss
Great to hear you are having so much fun! Let us know when you rock the waves my friend.... Thanks for the kind words...
Thanks again for another great video. I was also struggling to go upwind especially when not on the foil. May I add that one piece of advice that I was given and that helped me a lot? Basically the same thing Gwen is saying, just another way to look at it and maybe see things a little more clear:
It makes a huge difference on wich side of your body you hold your wing, be it shifted further towards the nose of the board or further towards the back. Looking from above, holding the wing rather shifted towards the nose of the board, the wind blowing into the wing is going to pivot the boards nose downwind, so you'll want to make sure to always hold the wing shifted more towards the back of the board. That's what should happen automatically when following Gwen's adivce to "twist your body and look into the wind"
Thank you friend for your insight so helpful for others.
Great Video and Tips. Thanks for posting this!
Thank you friend!
Thank you so much for such great videos. I’m just starting this amazing sport. I’m struggling now to get to the other side but I’m looking forward to it. And Gwen? Merci de tes commentaries 😉 Parfait. Little tips who helps me. Videos combining with comments. Very useful. 🤙
We appreciate you Chris! Thank you!
Yahoouuuuu!! LeRoy and Le Tutour you guys are the best !! I was really waiting for this video haha Excellent once again ;-)
Thank you for the kind words friend.....We appreciate you!
@@DamienLeroyUA-cam great tutorials. Really helping out. How about a tutorial on leash management and recommendations on leash types. Coil vs line etc. Any tips would be appreciated. I tend to get the leash caught on foil thanks
@@mikelelek6137 We will add it to the list! :)
Thanks for your videos from Spain, I find yours tips very usefull
Wow thank you! All the way from Spain! yewwwwwww
You guys do a nice job breaking down, what maybe the hardest part of understanding how to fly correctly. Thanks. As someone coming from no wind sports experience, it's been difficult trying to figuring out how to make foiling feel less squirrely. I feel like I have a plan now.
Thank you Tim for the kind words! We will keep sharing all the knowledge we can with you......
The Duotone Wing Academy advises to keep the board flat when you go offwind and try to get on the foil. That’s what I tried and mostly failed. Your advice is to keep the weight centered but with more weight on the heels and the board skipped slightly to the luv rail to get it going upwind. That helped me a lot to get the needed stability on the first flights. Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your videos!.
We are so thankful for you and appreciate the kind words! Honored we could help you.
Great stuff. Many Thanks from the oregon coast!
Thanks you Eric!
That Help a lot, merci beaucoup! Best from Switzerland
Thank you friend! Have a great week!
Really great videos you guys are making. Love the passion - it’s contagious!
Only done a few hours winging, starting from scratch and done plenty of walks of shame, but they’re getting shorter.
Really appreciate the awesome tips and guidance.
We appreciate you Richard. Thank you!
Sooo sickkkk!
being debating getting into this, but after the comment about the snowboard edge, it doesn't seem impossible!!!
from the videos it seems like slicing the smoothest pow ever on a flat, riding the wind instead of the muntain.
Rideee onnnn
Don't wait so worth it dive right in! This will send you over the edge! :) ua-cam.com/video/szYVnJL6kuI/v-deo.html
I just spent several hours in very light wind learning how the wing works relative to the board. Coming from a windsurfing background, I knew to move the back of boom up and down to tack and gybe. Problem is that because a wing does not connect to the board there are a third and fourth movement of the wing. I found two important axis to move wing, vertical (sail power control) and horizontal (board angle control). To adjust the lift and power of the wing is up and down. To move wing up (overhead) bring back hand down relative to the front hand and to bring it down from above, for more power, move back hand higher. To direct the board to point to weather, hold sail back (toward tail of board) which will load up the back of the board and push the nose into the wind, to go more downwind hold sail toward the front. I like your analogy to snowboarding for foiling. Cheers!
Thank you Dan for sharing your knowledge with others! We appreciate you!
great video keep them coming
Thank you sure will! Thanks for the kind words...
Thanks Guys for your energy 😉
Thank you!
Damien and Gwen, two good teachers. Nice nice explanation of the fundamentals. I will be trying all this on an SUP equipped with The SUP WINDer. Minimize the walks of shame!
Enjoy the process friend! Thank you for the kind words....
@@DamienLeroyUA-cam So now after three sessions just with my paddleboard it's clear that everything you're talking about here with a foil, and I was riding without one just the paddleboard with the dagger fin, all these things are true about edges, body twist, flattening out the board even with an edge, all these are the fundamentals; no doubt.
@@jonathankerner2094 GLAD TO HEAR FRIEND! keep at it and the fun will never end.....
Keep the vids going! Would like to ask what size board (L/Vol.) and Front-wing you most often use these days? What is your go-to mast length? Thanks.
great walk through... 🤙
Thank you!
Thanks. Not sure if covered sail positioning. The tip looks low when it’s sheeted in when on foil.
Super helpful!
Thank you!
your videos are solid advice! thanks
Thank you!
Which direction the wind can be to go up wind ,or doesn't matter the direction ?
@@elsobi Does not matter the direction, as long as you are powered and can ride, you can tack your way into the wind. Yes....
Gwen merci pour tes conseils, Les débuts sont difficiles, deux mois que j en chie mais je m accroche pour avoir du fun ensuite. Thanks guys 👍
Bon courage, tu vas y arriver!
Thank you very much!
We appreciate you!
Great vid
Thank you!
The snowboard analogy is really helpful. Have you thought of onboard footage to showcase the tips? What to do, what not to do and what will happen when you do different things.
Its a great idea, and yes we have thought about it, we are doing our best to share the message as best as possible.. Thank you for the ideas.
Damien and Gwen, I freakin love your videos guys! Really appreciate all the help! Keep rockin'! Any chance you could put one out one on how to increase speed while not on foil? I was in significant wind (15-20kts) and couldn't figure out how to increase my speed. I was pumping like crazy but I felt like I wasn't efficient with my wing and board position. Beam Reach? One side I felt faster than the other. Why the heck was that?
Rob, Thank you! Well honestly you will only go so fast and it will never be that fast unless you have lots of wind way more than 15-20 knots, if you just having the board on the surface not on foil. A board with out the foil will have too much drag "surface tension". That is why the foil is key! What I might recommend is moving your foil forward as it might help you pop up on foil. You may have you foil mounted to far back and it will never let you up? My thoughts.. Or maybe a larger foil wing if it is a smaller foil. Keep at it you will get it friend....
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
Awesome tutorial. Please make a video of going upwind when not foiling. Walking up the beach is really tiring and one sort of doesn't want to get speed to get on the foil as you have the walk of shame in the back of your mind, lol.
It is a tricky battle to angle your board into the wind and not grab to much wind in the sail and get drug down wind. It takes time but we will add it to the list. If you are on a SUP they are not great for going into the wind unless you have a
Sorry have a look at a "slingshot SUP winder"

Losing ground on the transitions is hard to overcome. Good info, thanks.
Thank you Rob!
You guys are great. Any tips on what to do when you start foiling and feel you are losing losing 'wing pressure'? (or was it just a lull in the wind?)
Amir, That sounds like a lull in the wind immediately start to pump the wing and try to glide though the lull on foil so you don't have to come off foil. Those are just lols in the wind that come and go... Thats why you always try to keep that speed up.... Hard to control Mother Nature friend... :)
Thank you for the video! I love them all!! I want to ask what tip would you give me to get up on the foil going up wind? I have no problem with getting up on the foil and going downwind and really love it! But I struggle with getting up on the foil when I go the other direction. I simply don't feel any power in my wing and I can't get it lifted! I have been struggling with it for 1 month already, it's like 2 different people foiling, one way 100%, the other way 0 :((((
I can only get upwind on my board flat as if it was just a sup. Can you make any tutorial about your strong and weak side plsss?? Cheers from Bali!
Everyone always has one way that is a struggle to go up wind! I did for sure! I am for sure thinking you are angled too far downwind on your bad direction with your board reason why there is no power in your wing. I need you to push hard on your back foot and turn the board more sideways, to the wind so you create power in your wing. Hold that and you will be able to have power and better go up wind in your bad direction. Hope that helps!
Went winging yesterday morning in tricky wind conditions. Really struggled to stay upwind. Combination of inconsistent foiling and zero-successful foiling transitions. I then switched to wind-foiling where almost every gybe I do is fully foiling. I made hundreds of metres upwind in minutes.
Conclusion? Staying upwind on the foil is easy, but you need to be on the foil. That will come in time. Don't fret about it.
Thank you so much agree! Thank you for sharing to help others!
Session 3: getting better than first and second! Flew regular with some control. But goofie is not working....yet. maybe you have some advice to fly both sides?
Hello from Wissant, France.
Repetition! It is hard and everyone goes though the struggle. Just keep at it it will come! Practice more on the beach before you hit the water on your bad side.....
Could you draw an arrow in the sand to show wind direction? It would help me visualise your instructions. Thanks 😊
Great point we will keep it in mind for the future!
Thanks from La ventana Baja

Thank you!
In your opinion, what is a minimum angle that a wingfoil can make against the wind? I mean for example a 4 meter wing with 15/17 wind knots on a HA 1500 foil. thanks
Well friend that is a tough question! For sure you will go better into the wind than a twin tip for sure. I believe the biggest problem is not the foil into the wind! Honestly the wings are very non efficient.... They will keep your angle down the least unless the industry, starts making some high end racing wings! I am sure we will see them coming soon! :)
What position do you have your foil in the track ?
Video dropping tomorrow friend! :)
Like always being on rail when snowboarding?
Haha Gwen just mentioned this concept! Thanks for the tips!
I have a 5.3 Naish wondering about an 85L Naish to start? I weigh 170 lbs and have 35+ yrs surfing experience, and race JY15 Sailboats. Thanks Damien!
Yewwwwwww
Seems like the nose needs to go upwards to gain lift onto the foil
It helps for sure!
