This is the final video in my 4 part series about using fabric selvages in the quilting world. Please watch to learn tips to create a selvage quilt block.
Thank you for showing us how to use selvages! It is currently 2024!!! So I’m a little slow on the uptake!!!! I have decided to try my hand at selvages and I’m going to do your block from video #4. Next year…. Hopefully there will be a few family picnic blankets to be given out! I have also decided to make it QAG!!! My brain is hurting with all the ideas spinning around in my head! 😆😆 Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I really appreciate it. As I’m sure many others do also. ❤ Happy Quilting!!!
Goooooo Terry!!!!!!! Thankyou for putting forth so much effort to share your wonderful ideas with 'US ! I will never again look at a selvage as useless.
So, l spent a very fun and productive day going through all of my fabric stash removing selvage edges! Mine are mainly small from fat quarters, but l have ideas on what to use them on for Christmas gifts. My husband thinks l have finally gone crazy,,,,, he thinks selvedge is of no use. Hahaha. Thanks to you he's got a surprise coming.....though l may not make him a sunglasses case for a Yule gift as he's still laughing at me!
Great videos! I love the big carry-all bag. Instead of a paper or fabric backing, I use used dryer sheets. Just press them on low & square them to the size I want & then follow your directions for adding selvages. One less thing to go into the landfill, us there's really no bulk & no paper to tear out.
Thank you for sharing that interesting block, who would have thought using selvages such pretty blocks achieved. Just subscribed since Kate Jackson mentioned you on her Chanel in UK.
Great tutorial! I even thought they would be great for pot holders and as gifted pot holders for friends who cook. Plus I see bonus pieces for boarders or cute blocks when those luscious blocks are cut on both diagonals and turn into 4 triangles. I can see the triangle sewn with solid fabrics between all four pieces making an X block with the Salvages in the 4 sides. Or the triangles sewn with color strips of fabrics between them rotated every other one making a gorgeous long border to frame a larger quilt.
Brilliant use of selvedges. When I was learning to sew I was told to always cut the selvedge off it’s useless but often thought how pretty or interesting they were. To you make something really beautiful from them proves my point! Quilters can use every last scrap, it’s magic! Also, I love your beautiful sewing machine.
Kate from the Last Homely House featured you this past Sunday, newly subscribed and have been watching your videos. I am enjoying selvedge videos, Thank you
I just want to share that my quilt shop has scraps available. They finish quilts, have classes so lots of scraps. For those who have limited fabrics try the shops you frequent for scraps. Terry, my very resourceful husband grew up on a farm in northern Minnesota. He reuses everything. I am so delighted with your open, creative process. I had stopped quilting. I will start again with small projects. Thank you so much
Thank you for showing how you make your selvage fabric and blocks. A quilty friend told me she will write the year and person’s name on the selvage who a quilt or project was gifted to. I think that is brilliant.
I’m hooked! I’m relatively new to quilting and I’ve only got about 6 selvages in my stash 🤣🤣🤣, so it’s going to be a while before I can make a quilt bag!!! As soon as I have a few more, I’m going to make a small notions bag to see how it goes. Thank you so much for your great tutorials xxx
Terry, this series is fabulous and your selvage projects are amazing! ⭐️⭐️⭐️Could you tell me how you made the straps with the selvage accent down the middle? Thank you! 🌸
Thank you those are my special tote bag handles. I put the selvages on a foundation and cut them the width I want my handle eg. 1 1/2” wide I put on a iron on batting to the back of the selvages piece then I get my backing piece I cut it 1 1/4” wider then the front so it would be 2 3/4” wide I place this piece right side together and sew down one side of the long handle then I match the other side RST on the other side and sew down the long side now it looks odd because the backing is way bigger than the front Now I turn it right side out and top stitch the sides and that is it **** I forgot to say before I attach the back to the sides I use the unpretty side of the selvages to add a pulling string to turn it Right side out make sure it is not in the way when you sew the side seams. I hope that makes sense
60+ years ago, as a new young bride far from home, I was invited to a 'newspaper' quilting party. You just took your scraps and sewed the first one onto a page of newspaper. Then you attached the next piece to the first piece and so on. ! All by hand.! I was so newly married that I didn't HAVE any scraps. The other gals shared, and I ended up with a piece about a foot square. Sorry I never finished that block....my hand stitches were NOT pretty, but the friendship to the newcomer was very welcomed.
Terry great video! I knew there had to be a good use for the old phone book. Great tip I will be trying this technique & sharing your videos with my friends. What a great an easy quilt block! Thanks Mariaknits27
Thank you for sharing your technique. I noticed on the large quilt bag, because you shared a close up, that the outside selvage edge was sewn on, rather than seamed. I had never noticed that anyone else did it that way. I am very sad because I threw away a small bag full of selvages i had saved up earlier this year. With your method I would have made use of them. From now on, I will enjoy this. Thank you so much. 😊
Is there a tutorial for the quilt behind you. Enjoy your take on selvages. I have quite a stash that I need to start using. The one thing I do is on a scrappy quilt , I put a selvage from the fabric in a few of my squares.
That is a nice touch to do I do that if I am making a scrappy quilt that is from one fabric designer Like Tula Pink . Most of my scrap quilts are from true scraps from many decades of fabric Lol

This has been an excellent series. Also love the bags you make using this technique.
I love how strong the bags are made with selvages and also how colorful they are

Thank you for showing how you make your selvage fabric and blocks.
A quilty friend told me she will write the year and person’s name on the selvage who a quilt or project was gifted to. I think that is brilliant.
You are welcome Have fun with them
In some of my selvage bags I write my name on them like they are part of a selvage
WoW! You taught us to make our own fabric And create a one-ofa-kind block at the same time!! Thx Terri!!!
You are welcome
Love you create process with reusing phone books
Very interesting and creative. I used to use very small pieces of selvage in my crumb blocks, but never thought of using them solely.
I enjoyed the video. Thanks for showing every step, including how you line up the ruler and trim.

I've been watching your last 4 videos. Having to do with stitching with salvages. How creative you can be. Thanks for sharing! Be well & safe. 🥰

Yes the selvages are just overlapped and sewn on top no seaming did you see the last two videos I talk about building the selvages on the base fabric
@@terryrowland398 yes i did. Thank you
Good idea
Super
Love this. I just started with selvages what stitch length do you use since your using paper.
Yes shorten up the stitch length to 1.8 so it is easier to remove the paper
@@terryrowland398 thank you.
