    Awesome video! Great information for the "do it yourself" people working on electronics! I just made my first batch of home made Rosin Flux using a rosin bar, 99 % alcohol and glycerin. It works fantastic! I will now, thanks to you, make my own flux pen.

    I was thinking about making something like this and you proved that it works well. Will be more handy than a nail polish bottle with a small brush. By the way, you can make your own flux by crushing rosin and then dissolving it in alcohol, pretty mild action, but helps quite a lot

      @zer0b0t 9 років тому +1

      MrJohhhnnnyyy Paste rosin too, like the radioshack one that is used for electronics, you can add some alcohol to dissolve it.

    • @mrjohhhnnnyyy5797
      @mrjohhhnnnyyy5797 9 років тому

      zerpBot Yes, if you have access to it. But I preffer to use solid rosin, 'cause pastes I can buy is more aggressive than I want. I bought an mild activated solid rosin for that, but yeah, dissolving paste will be quicker&easier

    • @zer0b0t
      @zer0b0t 9 років тому

      Yeah there are some pastes that though they clean really well the oxidation from wires they are acid and corrode the metal over the time, they are also very toxic. I avoid those ones and only buy the one made specifically for electronics.

      thanks for the suggestion, I would like to know your proportions of solid rosin and alcohol

    • @mrjohhhnnnyyy5797
      @mrjohhhnnnyyy5797 8 років тому

      rotanal Well, I didn't follow exact proportions :D But you can start with 1 part crushed rosin to 5 parts of alcohol (by volume). Shake it real good to dissolve it (it'll take some time) then try it out on some PCB. If it won't do much help, add more rosin, dissolve it, try again.
      I honestly dunno the proportion, I made a 50mL batch and it'll serve me for years :) The last batch I made is already 7 months old and I used just 30% from it. You don't have to flood the PCB with it, tiny drop does just fine.

    I made my Rosin Flux by weight not volume. Depending on the what type you like. Paste or liquid or something in between. for liquid flux use 40% rosin by weight, A little thicker, 65% by weight, Paste, 80% by weight. The Glycerin is optional, it helps to not have any smoke, The remaining portion is the 99% alcohol. You can buy the Rosin at any musical shop. Cello and violins use this to condition the bow. Walgreens or any other drug store will have the 99% alcohol and Glycerin. Give it a go, it really works!

    I made my flux pens for around 40 cents. Got 3 highlighters at a dollar store for a dollar. The flux I made from pine sap and alcohol. Been using it for over a year now.

    You can buy refillable poster marker pens empty.
    You have to push to draw liquid and also add a ball to stir it.

    its a good idea, however I think 951 would be a better choice, 186 will clog up the second time you try and use it or forget to put the cap on and lose all that rosin goodness. cheaper to buy a syringe with blunt nose tip. (no loss)

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  9 років тому

      su pyrow I have not had any problems using 186, but you can use whatever you like.

    DIY Homemade flux pen. Amazing 5 minute video of how to refill a marker. Maybe you could make a video of how to refill a syringe with flux, something I have no idea how to do...

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  8 років тому

      I usually use a syringe with a hypodermic needle for diabetics. I fill it up with the rosin flux.

      I have type 2..I have thought about doing that. Also was thinking cut the sharp point off so you don't accidently stick your self. Glad you mentioned that. Believe I will try it. O yea,, I have same type flux with needle on the end. Some how it started leaking. Had to transfer the flux into another bottle. I have a question. Where do you get blue tac. Looks like play dough

    Is it harmful to inhale great vid tnx

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  7 років тому

      Inhaling flux fumes isn't a good thing. Always hold your breath, or turn away from the fumes before inhaling. Ideally use a fume hood or solder outdoors.

    Good idea but why not just fill the pen with new clean cotton wool?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  9 років тому

      john porter If you happen to have a brand new cotton pad, then great. Most people do not have a new replacement for a pen they have laying around. :-). Cleaning a highlighter using water works just fine as long as you are patient and squeeze out the excess water and allow it to fully air dry.

    • @whitenorthstar
      @whitenorthstar 9 років тому +1

      I just used new cotton wool and didnt bother cleaning out the tip of the pen being a lazy so and so now my liquid flux is a bit off colour but it still works! lol! I'm guessing the colour will fade after a few dabs, Still!...a good idea and thanks,

    You can buy a flux pen for $1 and free shipping from China on ebay.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  8 років тому +2

      Yes, but you cannot refill the pen, they only contain a small amount of flux(5-10ml), and the flux used is not as good as the no-clean flux I use. Thanks for watching!

      Aren't you using rosin flux? Rosin flux is not no clean flux.

      You never heard of "No-Clean Rosin Flux"?

    • @jjenson2006

      No, I haven't. Do you have a link? Rosin, from what I understand is sticky and must be cleaned from the board afterwards.

    What is flux

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  7 років тому

      Flux is used to clean a connection before it's soldered, and it also allows the solder to flow nicely.
