    I've carried a SAK since I was 14, I'm 61 now, and I carry a SAK spartan. When my SAK gets a bit dull, I use a leather strop, and the edge comes right back. Also I subscribed 🦉

    I've carried a swiss champ since the late 1980s, when I won one for selling the most Strawberry Festival tickets in my local Boy Scout Troop competition. I have taken care of it, clean , oil and sharp it regularly, and it is still in fine shape.
    I love it and feel naked without it. The couple times I've left it behind on a trip, because my ex persuaded me to go 'carry on only' on a air trip or I was travelling somewhere that is non-permissive, I've felt naked.
    Like you I have a bunch of high end lockbacks and multi-tools. But the Swiss Champ owns a place in my right pocket.
    Cheers!
    Todd

    The can opener tip on teh SAK can undo Phillips screws... I wouldn't want to do more than a half dozen of them... but it can do it and is designed as such.
    I'd also say, if the scales are the only thing holding you back from the Cybertool L, just get aftermarket or custom scales. You can get wood, micarta, g10, titanium, whatever you want.

    To this day I do not regret my choice of the Victorinox cyber tool l. I placed beautiful green micarta and titanium scales on this. I also carry the Victorinox Cyber Tool l in my 5 pocket. I only use the knife as a secondary knife. I'd love to see your video where you go into more detail about the champ. The Victorinox Champion is actually the first knife I bought with my first salary 35 years ago.

    Pioneer X in my pocket, with a Swisschamp and a pair of Knipex Cobra pliers in my sling bag has been my solution to life “on the go.”
    My Swisschamp has been with me for over ten years, mostly carried in a bag that is always with me or nearby, and has outperformed any leatherman style multitool Ive ever owned previously. In fact, my Swisstool Spirit X rarely sees action and has been living in my car for years now, unused and neglected bc the champ is just that effective and convenient

    This is where I hit my tipping point.
    I LOVE the Classic. I've got a few and always have one around my neck as usually the only knife I hike with.
    But I draw the line at feeling like I need enough tools to be able to build a barn in case of emergency.
    You've got people who never leave short hiking trails making sure they have an awl in case they need to fashion their own clothing from animal pelts.
    We run into this in hiking as well. It's often a difference between getting one for YOUR needs, and the desire to have one so you can fill everyone ELSE'S needs. The former is usually lighter and less cumbersome.

      Yeah I just remind myself that for 40 years I survived daily life just fine with no knife/tool on me at all, and barely even felt inconvenienced. So even now that I have become interested in EDC and am a fan of SAKs, I go to the smallest and most minimalistic end of the spectrum. If it has a tool I don’t use at least once a week, I don’t carry it around with me like a nutcase.

    Great video!
    I found your channel today and this video. it's a great example of our doubts concerning the most adequate EDC multitool.
    I own a Victorinox Champion model from the '70s, I switch to a Swisschamp in 1986 (the great Victorinox SOS Survival kit) I carried it for many countries, in cars or flights (till 11/09 when the flights regulations was changed).
    In the past decades I bought and use many others pocket tools and multitools (including Leatherman, Gerber and other brands), but I always come back to the Swisschamp
    Actually, as an EDC I regularly switched from a Swisschamp to a "kit" of a Victorinox Champion plus and a Leatherman Squirt Ps4 (both discontinued products).
    The Leatherman Wave and Gerber are at home or in the car trunk.
    In my wallet always a Swisscard and in the case phone a Classic Alox SD.
    I used them daily
    The others are just as a part of my collection.

    I have gone a similar route... Got almost a dozen higher end folders similar to yours (Spyderco, Benchmade, Chris Reeve) but came back to only carrying a Victorinox about 6-7 years ago. For the most part it's been the Compact but I recently got a Swiss Champ and really enjoy it, too. The only issue with Victorinox is that I never can decide which one to carry...
    Victorinox' quality is outstanding - considering the lifetime warranty, the price and where it's made. I don't see myself going back to carrying higher end folders again.

    12:22 - Yeah but the SAK blades aren't made for that. Victorinox actually have gone in depth on why they still use fairly low grade steels with very high chromium content, and its mostly to do with reliability, rust resistance and hygiene. These knives are made to do tasks like whittle wood, spread food on bread and personal hygiene. The steel and chrome finish makes them super easy to clean and maintain

    • @TheGrenadier97
      @TheGrenadier97 11 місяців тому +1

      Indeed. In my experience the edge retention is pretty ok. Besides, i prefer having excellent rust resistance than some fancy steel that would pump the price up.

    • @kvernesdotten
      @kvernesdotten 11 місяців тому

      @@TheGrenadier97 Yeah there's a correct tool for everything, for a general purpose, daily use multitool that is meant to take on camping trips and whatnot I think its the right call. Super steels have their place, I just don't think this is it.
      What's funny though is that at least me personally often have to experience and own some high quality stuff to appreciate and understand that the cheaper items often aren't a worse version of the same thing, its a different thing made for a different purpose

    Hey, ich bin nach vielen Messern und Tools zum gleichen Schluss gekommen. Das Swisschamp will ich immer dabei haben, zwei Sachen stören mich leider doch.
    1. Wenn man es an einem kleinen Clip in die Hosentasche hängt, weil die 5. Jeans Tasche zu klein oder quer ist, und dass den ganzen Tag, stört es schon leicht.
    2. Ich möchte eine feststehenden, größere, Klinge dabei haben weil es mir ein Gefühl der Sicherheit gibt
    Die Lösung zur Zeit, eine kleine Männer Handtasche und beides drin.
    Viele Grüße

    I have been carrying the Victorinox huntsman for years, with plus scales so i can have a pen for urban environment plus the glasses screwdriver and pin since they didnt come with it either.... the reason that i choose the victorinox over other high steel etc etc knives/multitool is because the Victorinox goes way beyond limitations of Creativity how you use it, i even learned how to use the pen into the corkscrew and the small knife as center and a passer (dutch german word i think) or when im outdoors i can do the corkscrew in a long stick so i can saw off a twig high in the tree when my fishing hook got stuck there...many possibilities with a victorinox

    Wow. I went the other way. I started carrying a Swiss army knife, then after some years I realized I was tiered of trying to use tools that were undersized, uncomfortable to use, or were just not practical with an almost 2 inch thick by 4 inch long handle attached to it. Then I went to the Leatherman, and then the Gerber. Now I carry a large folder and the Gerber Diesel and that is it. Much better, and if I need to deploy the pliers, I just flick the multi-tool and there it is. I can now use the knife and another tool with it as well.

    I agree with you, it's easy to get lost in the glow and glitter of fancy knives with titanium and carbon fiber and fancy steels when you mostly just need something that is good enough and is easy to carry. Now I have not bought anything super fancy like a Chris Reeve or Rick Hinderer, but after spending around 300 on a knife it does not feel like you get significantly more than spending 150. Even after putting titanium scales on a few knives, they don't necessarily feel all that more. Right now I've been carrying a $15 dollar Gerber from Sam's Club that came in a 3 pack or a Delica I bought on sale. That being said I also carry a Tinker alongside one of the other ones.

    I didn't go as deep as you did perhaps down the knife/steel rabbithole, my most expensive is the Spyderco Urban which cost £75, I got the Manly Wasp in S90V for £55 before the prices went up about 50%. The Wasp is great and cuts like a lazer but I don't use it much as I'm concerned about sharpening it lol
    In any case when I do carry a folder I still carry a Vic for the scissors, even if it's a small one like the 74mm moneyclip. I got my Swisschamp for a good price and in black which I prefer. At £57 about 8 months ago, it was only £7 ($10) more than a Leatherman Squirt and it's 10 times as good.
    Recently I got into also carrying dedicated pocket tools which fit together well with a SAK ie. the Knipex Cobra XS, and often the Wera 813 driver handle which is the size of a Bic lighter, inexpensive and way better than pocket jewellery titanium EDC drivers costing 5 or 10 times as much. Those 2 tools work really well together with a Vic Climber, or Farmer X.

    I always shake my head when people complain about the weight or size of the swiss champ. It's not annoying at all. I have a pliers multitool that is heavier and bigger than the champ, on top of other tools, two watches (one on each wrist), 12+ keys in a key wallet that has other items as well, etc. and I have no problem. They're big whiners, acting like we are hiking 50 km a day? 🤣 I like being prepared for unexpected situations so I keep my gear. I plan on getting a swiss champ soon, with knipex cobra pliers. I am in the US in Virginia, so it is legal for me to conceal carry a one hand open, locking knife, so I also carry a Victorinox Ranger Grip 57. Just wish it had a clip to keep still in my pocket. 😋

    While I do appreciate some nice knives and such, im with you on this one. Its actually starting to annoy me that the entire edc community is telling me that I NEEEEEEEED to have a titanium pen, backpack with titanium zippers, titanium prybar, leatherman arc, knipex cobras, solar cells, a power drill and cargo pants that turn into a sleeping bag every single time I leave the house. How do I even get my grocery shopping done without those?
    7:00 I also recognize this, but at the same time I think its important to accept that you cant carry anything you might need, and if you are going to go get a tool to do something, the actual real tool will always beat the multitool. If It was me disassembling a shelf I would go get a ratcheting screwdriver or a drill even if my leatherman surge with ratcheting bit extender was on me. Less hassle, less frustration and probably less time too. Multitools are a gift from the gods when you dont have anything else, but when you do have something else, almost everything is better than them.
    Oh and I daily carry a victorinox tinker deluxe if that matters

I've even used it to build computers. I recently picked up a second one just in case....or to retire my original and let it sit on the shelf.
    The big difference between high end knives and victorinox, is that victorinox are users. They are toss around, get beat up, use every day.

    For me, the original SAK (spartan or tinker) has the best balance of tools to size of any multi tool out there. Quality is great, edge is very thin and slicey, the entire tool is cheaper to replace than a new Benchmade blade for example. Maybe the best folder ever made.

    The Cybertool L is a fantastic modern tool, esp with the torx drivers.
    However, if you're in a country with more sensible laws and enjoy camping, the Hercules has a locking blade, great tools and an excellent long philips screwdriver for all those horrid recessed screws.
    I LOVE Sinn watches 👍

    Cost me three weeks pocket money when I was 8 this was years before all the modern UK knife laws came in as it was back in 1975

    Don’t discount the toothpick. It is the best tool I’ve found for cleaning pocket fuzz out of my cellphone charging port. That’s why the Tinker is my favorite. Picked it up for $1 at the state surplus store where they sell pocket knives confiscated at Airport security.

    Great video. I started with the swiss champ, got a bunch of other things, including the Cyber tool, then ultimately back to the Champ.
    My biggest disappointment in the cyberool is the lack of a variety of bits available. If they offered bit kits to supplement it would be so much better. It comes with 8 bit options. The swiss champ already covers 4 of those (2 Phillips, 2 flats).
    Of course the cybertool is a much better screwdriver (and nut driver) than the champ for specifically dealing with tech. But it's hard to give up that file.

    • @rupertkoyd9944

      @MrNb131 The Cybertool L (the one in this video) has a file though? I just checked online. Are you referring to another Cybertool model?

    • @MrNb131
      @MrNb131 11 місяців тому +1

      @@rupertkoyd9944 oh wow thanks for the correction. My model is the 'Cybertool Light' and I often forget it's not the "L" because it's slightly larger than my Champ!
      I forgot that the trade off was actually the magnifying glass which I also use a lot. I do carry the CT Light pretty often and like it but now I might need to collect the CT L! Can always put a fresnel lens in my wallet to have a magnifying glass. It's great for reading tiny serial numbers etc which is pretty frequent for tech. work.

    • @rupertkoyd9944

      @MrNb131 I see. I figured you may have meant another model or something. Either that or I somehow misinterpreted your last few sentences. I was just interested. I want to purchase the swiss champ soon👍🏻
      Edit: Just wanted to add that yeah I didn't know the Cybertool Lite didn't have the file. I had to check the Cybertool L (for 'Large' as opposed to 'Lite') anyway as I didn't know which tools it had compared to the Swiss Champ as I'm looking to get a Swiss Champ👍🏻

    • @MrNb131
      @MrNb131 11 місяців тому +1

      @@rupertkoyd9944 I appreciate the correction!
      One unexpected disappointment in the Light is it has two less tools on the back-side than the Champ or Cybertool L. Though one of them is the small straight driver so meh but the other is the chisel. I never use the chisel on my Champ but someday it's going to come in handy, I just know it. :-) Though I do love the light part of the Light, it's oriented to illuminate what the screwdriver is turning. I miss that with other screwdrivers now.
      A nice surprise about the Champ for me is the fish scaler is actually not a total waste of space. I use it surprisingly often as a dull-ish long-ish pokey thing. Also I let my kids use it as a safe cardboard saw. Though they really should put a more modern tool in it's place.
